The List She Keeps
Wilfred Hubbard begins documenting her husband Mallory’s late nights and mentions of architect Ramona Steele in a plain black notebook. What starts as private observation of shifting habits becomes a deliberate ritual once Mallory discovers the pages. Rather than confrontation, the notebook turns into the shared center of their marriage. Entries are read aloud, expanded, and eventually shown to Ramona herself. The three establish a precise, documented dynamic in which Wilfred’s observations fuel escalating encounters. Jealousy is recorded alongside physical responses, turning secrecy into an ongoing written contract. The story follows the slow progression from solitary notes to live writing during encounters, collective readings, and a binding decision for permanence. The notebook remains open and accessible, its pages holding the record of how observation, instruction, and presence reshape their private arrangement.
