The Artifact's Touch

Karen Landers adjusted her tailored blazer as she stepped into the dimly lit study, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor. The room smelled of old leather and incense, a stark contrast to the glass-and-steel offices she usually navigated. Vincent Cordwell stood by the massive oak desk, his silver hair catching the low light from a single lamp. At fifty, he carried an air of refined mystery that made most people uneasy, but Karen met his gaze without flinching.

"Ms. Landers," Vincent said, his voice smooth and measured. "I trust the terms are acceptable."

She set her briefcase on the desk and opened it, revealing the signed contracts. "More than acceptable, Mr. Cordwell. Your collection will remain intact, and the valuation we agreed on protects your interests while giving the board what they need. It's a clean close."

Vincent nodded, sliding a velvet-lined box across the desk toward her. "The obsidian relic, as promised. It has been in my family for generations. Handle it with care."

Karen lifted the lid. Inside rested a smooth, palm-sized piece of obsidian, its surface etched with faint, swirling patterns that seemed to shift under the light. It felt heavier than it looked when she picked it up, a cool weight that sent a faint tingle through her fingertips. "It's beautiful," she said, turning it once before tucking it into her briefcase. "Thank you. This deal solidifies the partnership."

"Partnership," Vincent echoed, a small smile playing at his lips. "Yes. I suspect it will change more than your portfolio."

She offered a polite laugh, already mentally shifting to her next meeting. "I'll be in touch if any adjustments arise. Good evening, Mr. Cordwell."

The drive home passed in a blur of city lights. Karen kept the briefcase on the passenger seat, the relic's presence a quiet hum at the edge of her thoughts. By the time she reached her apartment, exhaustion from the long negotiations had settled in. She poured a glass of wine, changed into a silk camisole and shorts, and carried the relic to her bedroom nightstand before climbing into bed. The cool sheets felt good against her skin. Within minutes, sleep claimed her.

The dream unfolded without warning. Karen stood in a vast, shadowed chamber, her body bare and bathed in crimson light. Strong, unseen hands roamed over her, tracing the curve of her waist, cupping her breasts, teasing her nipples into tight peaks. Pleasure surged through her, sharp and electric. She arched into the touch, a low moan escaping her lips as fingers slid lower, parting her thighs and stroking her slick folds with deliberate pressure.

Shadows coalesced around her, cool and insistent. They pressed against her skin, drawing heat from her core. Each caress pulled something vital from her, a shimmering thread of energy that left her gasping yet craving more. Her hips rocked against the shadowy intrusion, the sensation of being filled and drained at once building to a fever pitch. She cried out as orgasm crashed through her, waves of ecstasy laced with a deep, pulsing loss that made her tremble. The shadows drank greedily, leaving her floating in a haze of bliss and depletion.

Karen woke with a sharp gasp, her body slick with sweat. The sheets clung to her, twisted around her legs. Her skin felt alive, every nerve heightened. The silk of her camisole brushed her nipples like a lover's tongue, sending sparks straight to her core. A deep, liquid warmth pooled between her thighs, her clit throbbing with insistent need. She pressed her legs together, the friction drawing a soft whimper from her throat. Her breasts felt fuller, heavier, the fabric stretched taut over sensitive flesh.

She sat up slowly, heart racing. The room looked the same, yet everything felt different. Her fingertips tingled as she ran them along her inner thigh, the touch almost too much. The warmth in her belly refused to fade, pulsing in time with her quickened pulse.

Needing to ground herself, Karen swung her legs over the side of the bed and padded to the bathroom. She flicked on the light and leaned toward the mirror. Her dark hair was tousled, her cheeks flushed. For a split second, her eyes caught the light and glowed with an unnatural amber hue, like embers beneath the surface. She blinked hard, and the glow vanished, leaving only her familiar hazel irises.

"Stress," she muttered, splashing cold water on her face. "Just the deal. Too much pressure."

She straightened, and her gaze dropped to her reflection's chest. The camisole hugged curves that seemed slightly more pronounced than the night before, the neckline dipping lower over the swell of her breasts. A faint ache lingered there, not unpleasant but insistent. Karen touched the spot just above her left temple, where a tiny, almost invisible ridge pressed against her skin beneath the hairline. She dismissed it as a trick of the light or a tension headache from the negotiations.

Back in the bedroom, the obsidian relic sat on the nightstand, its surface catching a sliver of moonlight. Karen stared at it for a long moment, the dream's echoes still thrumming through her sensitized body. She reached out, hesitated, then pulled her hand back. The hunger, whatever it was, could wait until morning. For now, she needed sleep, even if the warmth between her legs made rest feel impossible.
