The Drunken Bet
Tracy Caldwell eased her car onto the gravel drive, the familiar crunch beneath the tires pulling a smile across her face. The beach house stood just as she remembered it, weathered cedar shingles glowing warm in the late afternoon sun. Salt air drifted through her open window, carrying the steady rhythm of waves against the shore. She killed the engine and stepped out, stretching her arms overhead. Her tank top rode up, exposing a strip of sun-kissed skin above her shorts. At twenty-six, her yoga-toned body moved with easy confidence, full breasts shifting as she rolled her shoulders and shook out her long, wavy chestnut hair.
She had not even reached the front steps before the door flew open. Cilia burst out first, blonde hair perfectly straight, her slim figure wrapped in a crisp white linen dress. "Tracy! Finally. I was starting to think you got lost on purpose."
Tracy laughed and met her sister halfway, pulling her into a tight hug. The scent of Cilia's expensive sunscreen and the faint trace of lemon cleaner clung to her. "Traffic was brutal. But I'm here now. Ready to soak up two weeks of absolutely nothing."
Cilia pulled back, eyeing her with that familiar big-sister scrutiny. "You look good. Have you been teaching extra classes? Your arms are ridiculous."
"Guilty. Keeps me out of trouble." Tracy's gaze shifted past her sister as a taller figure filled the doorway. Bryce Curtis leaned against the frame, broad shoulders testing the seams of his navy polo shirt. His dark hair was tousled from the sea breeze, and those intense blue eyes locked onto her with the same quiet intensity she remembered from last summer. At thirty-two, the architect carried himself like a man who measured everything twice before acting. Right now, the corner of his mouth twitched with amusement.
"Tracy," he said, voice smooth and low. "Good to see you again."
She felt an unexpected flutter low in her stomach. "Bryce. Still putting up with my sister's bossy tendencies?"
He chuckled. "Some things are worth it." He stepped forward and gave her a brief, polite hug. His hand lingered a fraction too long at the small of her back, warm through the thin fabric of her top. When he released her, his eyes flicked down once, almost too quick to notice, before returning to her face. "Come on in. We've got the deck set up. Cilia made margaritas strong enough to knock out a sailor."
The interior smelled like polished wood and ocean salt. Tracy dropped her bag in the guest room that overlooked the dunes, changed into a loose sundress that skimmed her thighs, and joined them on the wide wooden deck. The sun had dipped lower, turning the water into molten gold. Three Adirondack chairs faced the view, a pitcher of pale green liquid sweating on the low table between them.
Cilia poured generously. "To summer at the beach house. No work emails. No schedules. Just this."
Tracy clinked her glass against theirs and took a long sip. The tequila hit sharp and sweet, lime cutting through the salt rim. She sank into her chair, bare feet curling against the warm wood. "God, I needed this. Teaching three hot yoga classes a day in the city was killing me."
Bryce stretched his long legs out, crossing them at the ankles. "You still doing those handstands on the beach at sunrise?"
"Every chance I get. There's something about being watched while you balance on your hands that just... centers you." The words slipped out before she could weigh them. She felt her cheeks warm, but blamed the cocktail.
Cilia rolled her eyes. "My sister, the exhibitionist yogi. Remember when you used to do cartwheels on the pier in front of all the tourists?"
Tracy grinned. "I was twelve. And I was good at it."
The conversation flowed easily as the sun disappeared. They finished the first pitcher. Bryce mixed a second, his movements precise, confident. Tracy watched the flex of his forearms as he shook the cocktail mixer. The alcohol loosened the tight knot she always carried in her chest after a long semester of teaching. She felt playful. Competitive. Alive.
"We need a game," Bryce announced, setting out a deck of cards and a bowl of chips. "Can't just sit here like responsible adults. Let's play some Texas Hold'em. Low stakes at first."
Cilia groaned but reached for the cards. "You know I always lose at this."
"That's why we make it interesting," Bryce said. His eyes met Tracy's for a beat. "Loser of each hand takes a shot or does a dare. Nothing too crazy. Yet."
Tracy raised an eyebrow, the tequila making her bold. "Dares? From the man who's about to marry my sister? This should be good. I'm in."
They dealt the first hand. Tracy lost almost immediately, her pair of sevens no match for Bryce's flush. She took the penalty shot without complaint, the liquor burning pleasantly down her throat. The next hand Cilia lost and had to do twenty push-ups on the deck while they counted aloud, laughing. Bryce's gaze kept drifting to Tracy, measuring her reactions.
Two more hands. Two more shots. The edges of the world grew softer, warmer. Tracy's competitive streak flared. She won the next round, forcing Bryce to admit out loud the most embarrassing thing he had done as a teenager. He told the story of streaking across his college quad with a straight face, but his eyes sparkled with mischief when he looked at her.
"Your turn to deal," he told her, voice dropping an octave. The breeze had picked up, tugging at the hem of her sundress. She crossed her legs, aware of how the fabric rode up her thighs.
The bets escalated. They stopped using chips and started wagering small truths. Cilia revealed she had once Googled Bryce's exes. Bryce admitted he sometimes watched Tracy's yoga Instagram videos when he needed inspiration for a tough design project. Tracy felt heat bloom across her chest at that revelation.
"Okay, enough small talk," Bryce said after Cilia excused herself to use the bathroom inside. The sky had gone fully dark, only the deck lights and distant pier lamps illuminating their faces. "Final hand. High stakes. You and me, Tracy."
She tilted her head, wavy hair spilling over one shoulder. The cocktails had gone straight to her head. She felt loose, dangerous, invincible. "What are we playing for, future brother-in-law?"
Bryce leaned forward, elbows on his knees. His sharp jawline caught the light. Those blue eyes held hers without blinking. "If I win, you agree to a series of dares. My choice. One every couple of days for the next two weeks. No backing out. No half measures. You do exactly what I say, when I say it."
Tracy's pulse jumped. She laughed, but it came out breathier than she intended. "And if I win?"
"I'll handle every dish, every grocery run, and every load of laundry for the rest of the summer. You won't lift a finger."
She considered it. The responsible part of her, the part that taught alignment and breathwork to stressed executives, whispered that this was reckless. The rest of her, buzzing with tequila and the thrill of competition, wanted to wipe that confident smirk off his face. "Deal. But the dares can't be dangerous. Or illegal."
"Nothing that would get you arrested," he promised. His voice carried a new edge of authority that made something low in her belly tighten. "But they might push your comfort zone. Think you can handle it, yoga girl?"
"Shuffle the cards, Bryce."
Cilia returned just as they laid down their final hands. Tracy had a full house. She felt triumphant, already imagining two weeks of watching Bryce scrub pans. Then Bryce flipped his last card. Four kings stared back at her.
"No," she breathed. The word slipped out before she could stop it.
Bryce's smile was slow, victorious, and edged with something darker. "Looks like I win."
Cilia looked between them, sipping the last of her drink. "What did I miss? What are the stakes?"
"Just a silly bet," Bryce said smoothly, never breaking eye contact with Tracy. "Nothing for you to worry about, babe. Tracy's going to help me test some... social experiments over the next couple weeks. For my work. Right, Tracy?"
Tracy's mouth felt dry despite all the alcohol. She nodded slowly, the reality of losing settling over her like the evening mist rolling in from the ocean. "Yeah. Sure. A bet's a bet."
Cilia shrugged, trusting as always. "I'm going to bed. You two clean up out here. Don't stay up too late." She kissed Bryce's cheek, then hugged Tracy again. "Glad you're here, little sis. This is going to be a great summer."
Once Cilia's footsteps faded inside and the sliding door clicked shut, the atmosphere on the deck shifted. The waves seemed louder. The air thicker. Bryce stood and moved to the railing, looking out at the dark water before turning to face her. He looked taller somehow. More commanding.
"Rules," he said, voice low and decisive. "Two weeks. Seven dares. You complete every single one without complaint. You don't tell Cilia the real nature of them. And you don't back out, no matter how nervous you get. If you do, the whole bet becomes null and I tell her you welched on a drunken wager. Understood?"
Tracy stood too, the sundress swirling around her toned legs. Her heart hammered against her ribs. "This was supposed to be silly. What kind of dares are we talking about, Bryce?"
He stepped closer. Close enough that she caught the scent of his cologne mixed with salt air. His gaze traveled down her body once, openly this time, lingering on the swell of her full breasts beneath the thin fabric before returning to her green eyes. "Exposure dares, Tracy. Public ones. Starting tomorrow."
Her stomach flipped. "Exposure?" The word came out smaller than she wanted. She crossed her arms, which only pushed her breasts higher. She saw him notice.
"Tomorrow morning. Public beach, just past the pier where all the tourists go. You sunbathe topless for two full hours. No cover-up. No leaving early. You stay there, on your back, hands at your sides, and let people look." His tone was instructional, almost clinical, but his eyes glittered with mischief. "After that, the dares get more interesting."
Tracy stared at him. The tequila made her head spin, but it could not account for the sudden rush of heat between her thighs. "You're joking. Cilia could walk by. Neighbors. My students from last summer take that beach. I can't just... be topless in front of strangers."
"You can. And you will." Bryce's voice dropped to that commanding register again. It did strange things to her pulse. "The bet is formalized. Two weeks. Seven dares of my design. All of them will involve showing that beautiful body of yours to people who don't know you. And you will complete them because deep down, competitive little Tracy hates losing more than she hates being looked at."
She opened her mouth to argue, but nothing came out. Instead, an image flashed through her mind, unbidden: herself lying on a bright towel, sun warming her bare breasts, strangers' eyes tracing her nipples as they hardened under their gaze. The shame that followed the image was immediate. So was the unexpected throb of curiosity low in her core.
"This is crazy," she whispered. Her voice sounded husky even to her own ears. "You're my sister's fiancé. You can't seriously expect me to parade around half-naked for your amusement."
Bryce reached out and tucked a strand of her chestnut hair behind her ear. His fingertips brushed her cheek, sending sparks down her neck. "It's not just for my amusement. Though I won't pretend I won't enjoy supervising. The first dare is simple. Topless sunbathing. Public beach. Ten o'clock tomorrow. I'll be watching from a distance to make sure you follow through. After that, we escalate. Slowly. You might even start to like it."
Tracy swallowed hard. She could feel her nipples tightening against the fabric of her dress, traitorous and obvious. Bryce's gaze flicked down again, and his smirk deepened.
"I... I need to think about this," she said, but they both knew the bet was sealed. The rules were set. Two weeks. No escape.
"No thinking. Only doing." He stepped back, giving her space but keeping that authoritative posture. "Get some sleep. You'll want to be well-rested for all those eyes on you tomorrow. And Tracy?"
She met his eyes, green clashing with blue.
"Don't wear anything too difficult to remove. The top comes off. The bottoms stay on. For now."
He turned and walked inside, leaving her alone on the deck with the sound of waves and the heavy beat of her own confused heart. Tracy gripped the railing, the wood cool beneath her palms. Resistance burned in her chest. This was humiliating. Reckless. Completely inappropriate.
Yet as she stood there, cheeks flushed from more than just alcohol, she could not deny the faint, treacherous spark of curiosity flickering beneath the shame. What would it feel like to have strangers' eyes on her bare skin? To know Bryce was watching her obey him?
She shook her head, trying to scatter the thoughts. It was just the tequila talking. Tomorrow she would find a way out of this bet. Or maybe, a small voice whispered as she headed inside, she would not.
The beach house was quiet as she climbed the stairs to her room. Through her window, the dark ocean stretched endlessly. Tracy peeled off her sundress and stood in front of the mirror in just her panties. Her full breasts rose and fell with each breath, nipples still peaked. She imagined lying on the sand like that, exposed, and a shiver that had nothing to do with cold ran through her athletic frame.
"What the hell did I just agree to?" she murmured to her reflection.
But even as she asked the question, her fingers brushed lightly across one nipple, testing. The jolt of sensation made her bite her lip.
She climbed into bed, the sheet cool against her heated skin. Sleep took a long time to claim her. When it finally did, her dreams filled with eyes. Dozens of them. All watching. All wanting. And in the center of them, Bryce's intense blue gaze, commanding her to keep going.
Tomorrow, the first dare awaited. Topless on the public beach. Tracy turned over, pressing her thighs together, and tried not to think about how much she was already wondering what it would feel like.
