Summer Rental Rules
Sidney Banks pulled his truck into the gravel driveway of the beach house and killed the engine. The place looked exactly like the photos Magdalena had sent, a two-story rental tucked behind dunes with nothing but sand and ocean stretching out on either side. Secluded. Perfect for a summer away from the gym grind. He grabbed his duffel from the passenger seat and headed for the front door, already feeling the tension in his shoulders ease at the sound of waves crashing nearby.
The door swung open before he could knock. Magdalena stood there in cutoff shorts and a loose tank top, her auburn hair pulled back in a messy ponytail that still managed to look intentional. She grinned, green eyes bright. "Sidney! You made it. Get in here before I start drinking alone."
He stepped inside and dropped his bag. "Took longer than I thought. Traffic was a bitch." His gaze swept the open living room, the kitchen beyond it, the stairs leading up. "Nice spot. You pick good."
"I always do." She bumped his shoulder with hers as she passed, heading for the kitchen. "Your room's upstairs on the right. Mine's across the hall. Unpack fast. I want to get a workout in before the sun drops too low."
Sidney raised an eyebrow but didn't argue. Magdalena knew he never skipped training. It was one of the reasons they clicked so well. He hauled his bag upstairs, found the bedroom, and started unpacking. Shorts, tanks, his lifting shoes. The bed faced a big window overlooking the ocean. He could already picture early morning runs on the sand.
Downstairs, Magdalena was stretching in the living room when he came back down. She had cleared a space between the couch and the coffee table, a yoga mat already laid out. "Figured we'd do it here instead of driving somewhere," she said, bending forward to touch her toes. Her tank rode up, exposing smooth skin along her lower back. "Joint session. Like old times."
"Old times were at the gym with weights," Sidney said, but he kicked off his shoes and joined her on the mat. "What are we doing?"
"Bodyweight circuit. Push-ups, squats, planks. Then stretches." She straightened and gave him that teasing smile. "Unless the big gym owner is afraid of a little flexibility work."
He snorted. "Keep talking. I'll still out-rep you."
They started easy. Push-ups side by side, Magdalena keeping pace without breaking a sweat. Sidney felt the familiar burn in his chest and shoulders, the good kind. She counted them out loud, her voice light and encouraging. After the third set she stood and motioned him down. "Your turn for planks. Hold it while I check your form."
Sidney dropped into position, forearms on the mat, body straight. Magdalena circled him slowly. "Magdalena tight," she said. Her foot nudged his hip, correcting his alignment. Then her hand pressed lightly between his shoulder blades. "Don't let it sag." The touch lingered a second longer than necessary, fingers warm through his shirt. Sidney focused on breathing, ignoring the odd flutter in his gut.
"Good," she murmured. "Now switch to downward dog. I'll help you open those hamstrings."
He moved into the pose, ass up, hands planted. Magdalena stepped behind him and placed her palms on the backs of his thighs, applying gentle pressure. "Relax into it," she instructed. Her hands slid higher, thumbs pressing into the muscle right below his shorts. Sidney felt the heat of her touch travel straight up his legs. It was just stretching. Magdalena had always been hands-on during workouts. Still, something about the way her fingers lingered made him shift his weight.
"You're tight today," she said, voice casual. "Been stressing at the gym?"
"Always." He exhaled. Her hands moved to his calves, then back up, testing the give in his quads. When she reached the hem of his shorts she paused, then gave a light squeeze. "Breathe, Sidney. You're holding tension everywhere."
They finished the circuit and moved into deeper stretches on the floor. Magdalena demonstrated a seated forward fold, then scooted behind him to guide his reach. Her chest brushed his back as she leaned over him, arms extending along his. "Feel that pull?" she asked. Her breath tickled his ear. Sidney nodded, suddenly very aware of how small she felt pressed against his broader frame, how her toned legs bracketed his.
After the workout they cooled down with water on the couch. Magdalena tucked her legs under her and studied him over the rim of her glass. "We should set some house rules while we're here," she said. "Make it fun. Like a game."
Sidney wiped sweat from his forehead. "What kind of rules?"
"Simple ones. Shared space means shared everything. No locking doors. If one of us is changing or showering, the other can walk in. Keeps things easy." She grinned. "First dare: right now, you shower with the door open. I'll do the same later. No big deal between best friends, right?"
He laughed, but it came out rougher than he meant. "You're serious?"
"Dead serious. Builds trust. Or are you shy all of a sudden?" Her eyes sparkled with that mix of challenge and affection he knew too well. "Come on, Sidney. It's just skin. We've seen each other in swim trunks a hundred times."
Sidney stood, rolling his shoulders. The idea felt ridiculous, but Magdalena's dares always had a way of pulling him in. Loyalty, he told himself. Keep the peace. "Fine. But if this gets weird, you're buying the first round of beers."
"Deal." She watched him head upstairs, her smile widening once his back was turned. Sidney stripped in the bathroom, left the door cracked as instructed, and stepped under the spray. The water ran hot over his muscles. He could hear Magdalena moving around downstairs, humming to herself. The openness felt strange, almost electric. Every sound from below seemed louder, more intimate.
When he finished and wrapped a towel around his waist, Magdalena was already at the top of the stairs. "My turn," she said, brushing past him. Her fingers trailed lightly across his bare stomach as she passed. "Rules are rules. Don't peek too much, or do. Your call."
Sidney stood in the hallway, towel low on his hips, listening to the water start. His skin still tingled where she'd touched him. This summer was supposed to be simple. Just friends, sun, and training. But Magdalena's playful rules already felt like they were shifting something underneath the surface, something he wasn't sure he wanted to name yet.
He headed back to his room to dress, the dare hanging in the air between them like an unspoken promise of more to come.
