The Inheritance Unveiled
Siena Palvin stepped out of the black sedan and felt the gravel crunch under her boots. The remote estate rose before them like something out of an old film, all stone and ivy and shuttered windows. Efrain lingered by the car door, hands in his pockets, already looking smaller than usual against the vast lawn.
“This can’t be right,” he muttered. “Dad never mentioned anything like this.”
The lawyer, a thin man in a gray suit, waited on the steps with a leather folder tucked under one arm. He introduced himself as Mr. Dawson and led them inside without small talk. The foyer smelled of polished wood and old paper. Siena’s pulse quickened for reasons she couldn’t name yet.
Dawson cleared his throat in the study. “The will is straightforward, Mrs. Palvin. Your late relative’s estate passes to you in full, provided you accept both the financial holdings and the attached property. Refusal means everything reverts to a secondary trust. Efrain receives nothing independently.”
Efrain’s face flushed. “That’s absurd. I’m the direct heir.”
Dawson slid a thick document across the desk. Siena scanned the numbers first: accounts, properties, investments totaling more than Efrain’s family had ever shown her. Then the second clause. A private dungeon beneath the estate, fully equipped and maintained under the terms of the original benefactor’s legacy. A black bull’s legacy, the document called it, tied to Efrain’s bloodline through some long-buried arrangement.
She looked up. “A dungeon.”
“Fully operational,” Dawson said. “You must claim ownership or forfeit the fortune. There is no partial acceptance.”
Efrain laughed once, sharp and nervous. “We’re not doing this. Siena, tell him we’re not doing this.”
Siena didn’t answer. She signed where Dawson indicated, her hand steady. The lawyer produced a second set of keys and led them to a reinforced door at the back of the library. Stairs descended into cool air that smelled faintly of leather and metal.
The dungeon opened like a hidden world. Lights clicked on in sequence, revealing padded walls, a large four-poster bed frame fitted with restraint points, a St. Andrew’s cross, and a long table lined with crops, floggers, and coils of rope. Cameras sat discreetly in the corners. A steel cabinet stood open, displaying cuffs, collars, and plugs in neat rows.
Siena walked the length of the room slowly. Her fingers brushed a thick leather collar hanging from a hook. The material was warm from the ambient temperature. She lifted it, feeling the weight, the solid buckle, the faint scent of oil. A low thrum started in her chest.
Efrain stayed near the stairs. “This is sick. Whoever left this to us was twisted. We should board it up and sell the house.”
Siena didn’t turn. She ran her palm over a padded bench with adjustable straps. The surface gave slightly under her touch. She imagined the sound of buckles snapping shut and felt heat bloom low in her belly. For the first time in years something inside her uncoiled, sharp and hungry.
“You’re not listening,” Efrain said, voice rising. “We can contest this. The whole thing is probably illegal.”
She faced him. “The money is real. The house is real. And this,” she gestured at the room, “is part of the deal. I’m not walking away from it.”
Efrain stepped closer, trying to loom. “You’re not serious. You can’t actually want to play with this garbage.”
Siena lifted the collar again. It felt natural in her hands. “Put this on.”
He blinked. “What?”
“Just for a minute. Humor me.” Her tone stayed even, but something new edged into it. Efrain hesitated, then gave a short, disbelieving laugh and tilted his head forward. She buckled the collar around his neck. The leather settled against his skin with a soft creak. His breath hitched.
The sight did something to her. Efrain looked smaller already, the collar marking him as claimed. She tugged the ring at the front once, testing. He swayed forward an inch before catching himself.
“Take it off,” he said, but the words lacked force.
Siena left it on. She walked to the cabinet and selected a pair of simple leather cuffs. When she returned, Efrain didn’t move away. She fastened one cuff around his left wrist, then the other. The click of each buckle echoed softly.
“Siena, this isn’t funny.”
“I didn’t say it was.” She stepped back and studied him. The collar sat snug. His cheeks had gone pink. A small, electric thrill ran through her at the sight of her husband restrained by her own hands. It wasn’t much yet, but it was a start.
Footsteps sounded on the stairs above. Dawson had left them alone, but someone else was descending. A tall figure filled the doorway, broad shoulders blocking the light. Deep ebony skin, a crisp black shirt open at the throat, and eyes that assessed the room in one slow sweep.
Dominic entered without invitation. He looked first at Siena, then at Efrain in the collar and cuffs. A slow nod followed.
“Mistress,” he said, voice low and even. “The legacy welcomes you.”
Siena’s grip tightened on the remaining cuff. The first real flicker of power settled into her chest like a lit match. She didn’t smile, but something inside her answered yes.
