The Wager
Nathan Rollings leaned back in his leather chair at the head of the boardroom table, his tailored suit jacket pulled tight across his broad shoulders. The merger numbers glared from the screen behind him, and every eye in the room was on Julian Cross. Again.
"Your projections are too conservative," Nathan said, his voice cutting through the silence. "We push harder on the valuation or we lose leverage. End of discussion."
Julian didn't flinch. He stood at the far end of the table, lean frame relaxed in a slim charcoal suit, dark wavy hair falling just enough over his forehead to look deliberate. His sharp hazel eyes met Nathan's without hesitation. "Conservative keeps the deal alive. Aggressive gets us walked out the door. I've run the models three times."
Nathan's jaw tightened. He hated how calm Julian always sounded, how the man never raised his voice even when Nathan tried to steamroll him. "Models don't close mergers. Balls do. Something you might understand if you spent less time worrying about your lifestyle and more on actual strategy."
The words landed like a slap. A few heads turned. Julian's mouth curved into a small, dangerous smile.
"My lifestyle," Julian repeated softly. "Interesting choice of words, Rollings. Care to put your arrogance where your mouth is?"
The room went still. Nathan felt the heat rise in his chest. He should have stopped there. Instead he leaned forward, piercing blue eyes locked on his subordinate. "Name it."
Julian's smile widened. "If the deal closes at my numbers, you follow my instructions for one month. Private. After hours. No questions. If it closes at yours, I hand in my resignation."
Nathan laughed once, short and sharp. "You'd really risk your job on that?"
"I would," Julian said. "The question is whether you have the spine to risk your pride."
Nathan's competitive streak flared hot. He had never lost a bet that mattered. "Done. Get it in writing after the meeting."
The rest of the presentation dragged. Nathan kept his focus on the slides, but his mind circled the wager. It was ridiculous. Humiliating if anyone found out. Yet the thought of finally putting Julian in his place sent a sharp thrill through him.
When the room emptied, Julian lingered. He slid a single sheet of paper across the table. Nathan read it twice. The terms were exactly as stated, blunt and binding. He signed with a flourish, shoving the paper back.
"Don't get any ideas, Cross," Nathan muttered. "This is business."
Julian tucked the paper into his briefcase. "We'll see."
Three days later the merger collapsed. Julian's numbers had been right. Nathan's had been reckless. The board's disappointment was a living thing in the conference room, and Nathan left with his stomach in knots.
His phone buzzed that evening with a single text from Julian: "My office. Now."
Nathan arrived angry, shoulders squared, fists clenched at his sides. The floor was mostly dark, only a few lights left on in the executive wing. Julian's door stood open. Nathan stepped inside and shut it behind him.
Julian sat behind his desk, jacket off, sleeves rolled to his forearms. He looked up slowly. "Strip."
The word hit Nathan like ice water. "Excuse me?"
"You signed the wager. You lost. Strip. Fold your clothes on the chair. Then kneel."
Nathan's pulse hammered in his throat. He had expected shouting, maybe a resignation letter, not this quiet command. Heat flooded his face. "This is a joke."
Julian stood. He walked around the desk until they were inches apart. His voice stayed low, steady. "You mocked my lifestyle in front of the entire team. You bet your pride. Now you pay. Or walk out and I send the signed paper to HR with a harassment complaint attached. Your choice."
Nathan's hands shook as he reached for his tie. He hated the tremor. He hated how Julian watched every movement with calm, assessing eyes. The silk slid free. Nathan folded the tie, set it on the chair, then shrugged out of his jacket. Each button on his shirt felt like surrender. He kept his gaze on the floor, refusing to meet Julian's stare.
When he reached his belt, his breathing had gone shallow. The leather whispered through the loops. Trousers followed. He stood in black boxer briefs, chest bare, skin prickling under the cool office air.
"All of it," Julian said.
Nathan swallowed hard. He pushed the briefs down and stepped out of them. The air touched every inch of him. He felt exposed, ridiculous, and something else he refused to name.
Julian circled him once, slow. "On your knees."
Nathan dropped. The carpet was rough against his skin. He kept his spine straight, shoulders back, the last scrap of defiance he could manage. His cock hung heavy between his thighs, and he prayed Julian wouldn't comment on the fact that it wasn't entirely soft.
Julian stopped in front of him. One hand reached out and tilted Nathan's chin upward. Their eyes met. Nathan saw no mockery there, only quiet satisfaction and something hotter.
"Good," Julian murmured. "Now we begin."
Nathan stayed silent. His mind raced with shame, anger, and a low, traitorous pulse of anticipation that made his stomach twist. He had walked in ready to fight. He was still there, naked and kneeling, because some part of him needed to know what came next.
Julian's fingers lingered under his chin a moment longer before withdrawing. The silence stretched, thick with everything neither of them had said yet. Nathan's breath came slower, heavier. He waited.
