First Exhale

The studio smelled like sandalwood and clean linen, a scent so deliberately calming that Hailina almost resented it. She stood at the front desk with her laptop bag still strapped across her chest, her shoulders somewhere up near her ears, her phone buzzing against her thigh with an email she already knew she should answer.

She silenced it without looking.

"Welcome to Solace Breathwork." The voice came from behind her, soft and warm, carrying no urgency at all. "I'm Erika. You must be Hailina."

Hailina turned and found a woman who moved like water. Everything about her was unhurried. Dark hair pulled back in a low twist. Arms bare and elegant. Eyes that held a stillness Hailina had forgotten existed.

"Yes. Hi." Hailina shifted her bag. "I booked the intro session, but I think I want to upgrade to the private package. If that's available."

"It is." Erika smiled, and the expression took its time reaching her eyes. "Let's get you settled first. We can talk details after."

Hailina followed her through a hallway lined with soft sconce lighting into a small room with two bolsters, a folded blanket, and nothing else. No mirrors. No distractions. The floor was heated beneath her socks.

"You can leave your bag against the wall. Whatever you need to let go of for the next hour, it'll still be there when you're done."

Hailina set the bag down but kept her phone in her hand for a second too long. She caught herself and placed it on top of the bag, face down.

Erika gestured to the bolsters. "Lie down however feels right. We'll start simple."

Hailina arranged herself on her back with a bolster under her knees. The position was familiar from countless yoga classes, but here it felt different. More intentional. She folded her hands over her stomach and stared at the ceiling.

Erika sat cross-legged beside her, close enough that Hailina could smell her now. Something herbal. Maybe sage.

"Tell me what brought you here today."

Hailina laughed, a short exhale through her nose. "Work. Stress. The usual."

"The usual," Erika repeated, and the words landed like a gentle correction. "Tell me specifically. What does the stress feel like right now, in this moment?"

Hailina considered the question. She was good at questions. She answered them for a living. But this one required a different kind of attention.

"Tight. My chest feels tight. And my jaw." She touched her face. "I didn't realize I was clenching."

"You've been clenching for a long time. Today is just when you notice." Erika's voice dropped slightly, taking on a rhythm that matched the slow pulse of the room. "That's what we do here. We notice. We create space. We let the body remember how to soften."

Hailina closed her eyes. The sandalwood was stronger now, or maybe she was just paying attention.

"I'm going to guide you through some breathing," Erika said. "Nothing complicated. Just following my voice. Can you do that for me?"

"Yes."

"Good. Then let's start with an inhale. Breathe in through your nose. Fill your belly first, then let the breath rise through your ribs and into your chest. Take your time."

Hailina inhaled. The air felt thick and warm.

"Hold at the top. Just for a moment. Notice the pause."

She held. Her lungs stretched. Her heart beat against the silence.

"And now exhale. Let everything go. All the air, all the tension, anything you don't need to carry right now. Let it leave your body completely."

The breath left her in a long, slow stream. Her chest dropped. Her shoulders dropped. A vertebra in her spine released with a small sound she hadn't expected.

"Good. Very good. Now again. Inhale. Fill from the bottom up. Let the breath work through you."

She followed. Each cycle pulled her deeper into the floor. The heated surface softened beneath her. The bolster cradled her knees.

"Notice where you're still holding," Erika said. "Your hands. Your forehead. The space between your ribs. Breathe into those places. Let the inhale create room."

Hailina tried. She imagined her breath moving into her clenched jaw, her tight shoulders. A shift happened deep in her tissue. She couldn't name it, but she felt it.

"That's it. You're doing exactly what you need to do."

The praise landed somewhere unexpected. Hailina felt a warmth spread through her chest that had nothing to do with the breath.

"Now I want you to listen closely," Erika said. Her voice had changed, become more intimate, threading through the space between them. "On your next exhale, I want you to repeat something in your mind. Just the words. No effort. Just let them settle."

Hailina waited.

"Inhale first. Deep and full."

She breathed in.

"Hold."

She held.

"And as you exhale, repeat after me. I can let go."

The words moved through her on the outgoing breath. I can let go.

"Again. Inhale."

She inhaled.

"Hold."

She held.

"And exhale. I can let go."

I can let go. This time the words felt easier. She didn't have to think about them.

"One more time. Deep breath in."

Her lungs filled.

"Hold at the top. Feel the pressure. Feel the need to release."

She felt it. The urge to exhale built in her chest, a pressure that demanded relief.

"And now let it go. All of it. Let everything go."

The exhale rushed out of her, longer than she thought possible. Her body sank into the floor. Her mind went quiet.

"That's it. That's the feeling we're working toward." Erika paused, letting the silence stretch. "Now let's add something. On your next inhale, I want you to repeat a new phrase. Breathe in the words. Let them fill you the way the air fills you."

Hailina felt a flicker of curiosity. Or maybe wariness. It passed quickly.

"Inhale. And as you breathe in, say to yourself: I trust this process."

She inhaled. I trust this process. The words felt strange in her mind, like a key being inserted into a lock she didn't know existed.

"Hold. Feel the words settle."

She held. The words pressed against the inside of her skull.

"And exhale. Let go of everything else. Keep the words. Let the tension leave."

She exhaled. A knot released. The words remained.

"Good. Again. Inhale. I trust this process."

I trust this process. The repetition smoothed the edges off the words. They started to feel true.

"Exhale. Let it go."

She let go.

"One more cycle. Inhale. I trust this process."

I trust this process.

"Hold."

She held. The words hummed in her chest.

"And exhale. Let everything go. Everything you don't need. Anything that isn't serving you. Let it all leave on the breath."

The exhale carried more than air. She felt it in her fingers, her toes, the back of her neck. An old, tight thing was loosening.

"Now we're going to change the pattern," Erika said. "I want you to breathe normally. Just let your body find its own rhythm. Don't control it. Don't direct it. Just observe."

Hailina's breath settled into a slower pace than usual. Her chest rose and fell without her input.

"While you breathe, I'm going to say a few things. You don't need to respond. You don't need to remember. Just let my voice move through you the way the air does."

Erika's voice dropped lower, taking on a cadence that felt almost musical.

"Every time you inhale, you take in something new. Every time you exhale, you release something old. This is the rhythm of change. In and out. Receiving and letting go."

Hailina's breath matched the words. In. Out. In. Out.

"Your body knows how to breathe without you thinking about it. Your mind can learn the same. Thoughts can move through you like air. You don't have to hold onto them."

Her thoughts were slowing down. The email. The deadline. The meeting she had tomorrow. They were still there, but they felt distant, like voices in another room.

"Breathe in my voice. Let it settle somewhere deep. Somewhere you don't usually let anyone reach."

The instruction was strange, but Hailina's body obeyed. She inhaled and felt Erika's words move into her lungs, her bloodstream, the spaces between her ribs.

"On your next exhale, I want you to say a new phrase. Just in your mind. Let it leave with the breath."

Hailina waited.

"Inhale."

She inhaled.

"Hold."

She held.

"And exhale. I am open."

I am open. The words left her on the breath, and for a moment she felt exactly that. Open. Unarmored. Soft.

"Again. Inhale. I am open."

I am open. She breathed the words in.

"Hold."

She held.

"Exhale. I am open."

I am open. The exhale was longer this time. She felt the phrase echoing in her chest long after the air was gone.

"One more time. Deep breath in. I am open."

I am open.

"Hold. Feel the openness. Feel the space you've created."

She felt it. A hollow space behind her sternum. A quiet room inside her head.

"And exhale. Let the words settle. Let them become part of you."

She exhaled. The words stayed.

Erika was quiet for a long moment. Hailina lay still, her breath moving on its own, her body heavy and warm.

"That was beautiful," Erika said softly. "You're a natural. Some people take weeks to get where you just went in one session."

Hailina wanted to respond, but her voice felt far away. She opened her eyes instead. The ceiling looked different. Softer. The light was the same, but she was seeing it differently.

"How do you feel?" Erika asked.

Hailina considered the question. The usual answer would be "good" or "relaxed." But those words felt small.

"Open," she said. The word came out before she could stop it.

Erika smiled. "That's exactly right."

Hailina sat up slowly. Her limbs felt loose, uncoordinated. She looked at her hands. They were resting in her lap, palms up, fingers relaxed.

"I'd like to book the private package," she said. "Ten sessions."

"I think that's a wise investment." Erika stood and offered a hand. Hailina took it and rose. Her body felt taller. Lighter. "I'll send you some audio files to practice with at home. Same breathing patterns. Same phrases. The more you repeat them, the deeper they settle."

"Okay." Hailina picked up her phone. Three missed calls. A string of emails. She looked at the screen and felt nothing.

"Do you have any questions before you go?"

Hailina thought about it. She should have questions. She always had questions. But her mind was quiet, satisfied, full of sandalwood and the echo of Erika's voice.

"No," she said. "I think I'm good."

"Then I'll see you next week. Same time."

Hailina walked back through the hallway. Her steps were slower than when she arrived. She could feel the floor through her socks. The sconce light flickered and she watched it with a patience she didn't recognize.

The front door opened onto a street she'd driven down a hundred times. It looked different now. The colors were brighter. The air tasted cleaner.

She got in her car and sat for a moment before starting the engine. Her hand rested on the steering wheel. Her breath moved in and out without her direction.

I am open.

The phrase surfaced on its own. She didn't push it away.

I trust this process.

She started the car and pulled into traffic. The email could wait. The meeting could wait. Everything could wait.

She had ten sessions. And for the first time in years, she wanted to see where they would take her.

The sandalwood clung to her clothes all the way home.
