Orientation
The gates of Arcology Compound Seven rose from the dust like the jawbone of some buried leviathan. Tessa Horner stood in their shadow, her boots caked with the gray ash that had once been a city, her lungs burning from the long walk across the dead surface. Behind her stretched nothing but ruins and the faint shimmer of radiation haze. Before her, salvation or a different kind of death.
She pressed the rusty button beside the massive steel door and waited.
A speaker crackled. State your business.
Shelter, Tessa rasped. Her voice came out like gravel, unused for days. I need shelter. I'm alone. I have nothing.
Silence stretched. Then the door groaned and began to slide open.
The interior hit her like a slap. Warmth. Light. The smell of recycled air and human bodies and something floral trying to mask the odor of so many people packed into a contained space. Tessa stumbled forward as the door ground shut behind her, sealing her in.
A woman in a gray uniform waited, her face professionally blank. Follow me. The Director will see you.
Tessa followed. She had no choice. That was already becoming the pattern of her new life.
The Director's office was small and functional, all metal surfaces and humming data screens. Director Steimer Harwel sat behind a desk cluttered with tablets and papers, his silvering hair combed back from a stern face. He did not stand when she entered.
Name and origin, he said without preamble.
Tessa Horner. I came from the northern settlement. It fell three weeks ago. Raiders.
Your family?
The question struck her like a blade between the ribs. My husband died in the attack. We had no children. I've been alone since.
Director Harwel nodded as if she had confirmed something he already suspected. He slid a tablet across the desk. You understand our terms of entry?
Tessa picked up the tablet. The screen glowed with dense text, but she didn't need to read it all. She had heard rumors about the Arcology Compounds. Everyone had. I've heard things.
Then you know this is not charity. Every resident contributes. Every resident has a purpose. For women of breeding age, that purpose is clear.
She scanned the document. The words blurred. Reproductive obligation. Mandatory pairing. Free-use zone access. Fertility monitoring. Breeding quota fulfillment. Her stomach turned. This is a contract. For my body.
This is a contract for your survival, Harwel corrected. You will eat. You will have shelter. You will have medical care and protection. In exchange, you will participate in the breeding program as assigned. The colony needs children, Mrs. Horner. We need them desperately. Every woman of childbearing age is a resource we cannot afford to waste.
I'm still grieving, she whispered. My husband. I can't just...
You can, and you will. Grief does not fill a belly. Grief does not keep the lights on. Your husband is dead. You are alive. The colony requires your fertility. That is the price of your continued existence.
Tessa stared at the contract. Her hand trembled. She remembered the surface, the cold nights, the raiders, the starvation. The bodies she had left behind. Mark's face surfaced unbidden, the way he had looked at her when they married, the promise of a future that had died with him.
She signed.
The tablet beeped as it registered her fingerprint and retinal scan. Director Harwel took it back and made a note on his own screen. Good. You'll be taken to Medical for your implants. Then you'll receive your orientation. Welcome to the Compound, Mrs. Horner. I hope you prove more valuable than your predecessor.
The medical bay smelled of antiseptic and copper. A young woman with tired eyes guided Tessa to a chair and strapped her arm to a metal rest.
This will pinch, the woman said.
What is it?
Hormone implant. Regulates your cycle, maximizes fertility windows. Makes sure you're ready when you need to be.
The needle went in. Tessa gasped at the cold burn spreading under her skin. A tiny device, no larger than a grain of rice, settled into the soft tissue of her inner arm. The woman smoothed a bandage over the spot.
Second one, she said, picking up another device. This one looked like a small gun. Tracking implant. Goes into your shoulder blade. Don't worry, you won't feel it after today.
You're tracking me?
Everyone. Where you go, who you're with, how often. It's for your safety and for quota management. Don't try to remove it. They're designed to kill you if tampered with.
The second implant went in with a sharp click. Tessa felt the device settle between her shoulder blades, a faint pressure that would soon become invisible but never forgotten.
Done, the woman said. Someone will take you to orientation.
The orientation room held six other new arrivals, all women, all with the same dazed look of people who had traded everything for a locked door. A man in a gray uniform stood at the front, pointing to a holographic map of the compound.
Welcome to your new home, he said. I'm Administrator Cale. I'll be explaining how things work here. Pay attention. Your lives depend on it.
He gestured to the map. The compound is divided into zones. Residential, where you'll sleep. Medical, where you've already been. Agricultural and hydroponics, where you'll work shifts. And the breeding wings.
The map highlighted a series of connected rooms. Tessa's mouth went dry.
There are three types of breeding spaces, Cale continued. Private pods for assigned pairings. Semi-public relaxation zones for approved encounters. And free-use areas, which are exactly what they sound like. Any male resident can access any female resident in those zones at any time, provided she's not already engaged.
One of the other women raised her hand. What if we say no?
Cale's expression didn't change. You don't. Refusal to participate results in reduced rations. Repeated refusal results in expulsion. Expulsion means the surface. You've seen the surface. I don't recommend it.
He continued. You'll each be assigned a primary pairing partner within the week. This is your designated sire. You'll have scheduled sessions in a private pod to establish baseline compatibility and begin the breeding process. Outside of those sessions, you're available in the relaxation and free-use zones according to your duty rotation.
How often? Tessa heard herself ask.
Minimum of three breeding acts per day during fertile windows. One per day outside of them. You'll be monitored to ensure compliance. The implants track hormone levels, so we know exactly when you're ovulating.
Three times a day. Minimum. Tessa felt the room spin. She gripped the edge of her chair.
There are incentives, Cale added, almost as an afterthought. Successful pregnancy earns you priority housing and increased rations. Multiple successful pregnancies can earn you status, reduced work duties, even input into breeding protocols. The more you give, the more you get.
And if we can't get pregnant? another woman asked.
Then you continue trying until you do. The colony needs children. You will provide them.
The tour that followed was a blur of corridors and sealed doors. Tessa saw the private pods first, small rooms with beds and monitoring equipment, sterile and impersonal. Then the relaxation zones, larger spaces with couches and cushions, where a few women lounged in various states of undress while men moved among them. Tessa looked away, but not before she saw the blank, accepting expressions on the women's faces.
The free-use zone was the worst.
Cale led them through a heavy door into a large open room bathed in dim amber light. Mattresses were scattered across the floor in no particular arrangement, some still bearing the rumpled evidence of recent use. The air was thick with the smell of sweat and sex, an unmistakable musk that clung to the back of Tessa's throat.
Several couples were already engaged. Tessa froze in the doorway, her body refusing to move forward.
On the nearest mattress, a woman lay on her back with her legs spread wide, her knees held apart by a man who thrust into her with steady, mechanical rhythm. His hips snapped forward in even intervals, driving deep with each stroke. The woman beneath him stared at the ceiling, her face empty of pleasure or pain, her breasts rocking with each impact. She might have been counting the tiles. She might have been somewhere else entirely. The man grunted with effort, his buttocks clenching as he buried himself to the hilt, then withdrew and pushed in again. His pace never varied. He was completing a task.
Another woman knelt against the far wall, her palms flat on the cold surface, her back arched. A line of men waited behind her, three of them, their expressions patient and hungry. The one currently inside her gripped her hips and fucked her with quick, urgent thrusts, his breathing ragged. Her body jolted with each push, her breasts swaying beneath her. She made no sound. When he finished, he pulled out and stepped aside with a grunt of satisfaction. The next man took his place immediately, positioning himself behind her, guiding his erection into her without preamble. She didn't flinch. Her opening was slick and swollen, visible even from across the room, the evidence of multiple partners glistening on her thighs. The new man began thrusting, and her body rocked forward and back with the same motion it had endured before, her face turned to the wall, her eyes vacant.
In the center of the room, two men shared a woman. One lay beneath her while she straddled him, her hips rolling in slow circles, his hands gripping her waist. The other stood behind her, one hand on her shoulder, pressing her forward as he worked himself into her from behind. She gasped with each dual thrust, her body stretched and filled from both sides, her mouth open in a sound that might have been protest or might have been something else. The man beneath her squeezed her breasts, pinching her nipples between rough fingers. She whimpered. The man behind her increased his pace, slamming into her hard enough to push her forward, and the one beneath her matched his rhythm. They moved her between them like an object, adjusting her body to suit their needs, and she let them.
Tessa's stomach lurched. She pressed her hand to her mouth, fighting the urge to retch.
A fourth woman sat on a mattress near the door, her legs crossed, her eyes closed. A man knelt beside her, his hand between her thighs, his fingers working inside her with practiced efficiency. She was being prepared. Her breathing had quickened, her thighs trembling slightly, and Tessa could see the wetness on his fingers as he withdrew and pushed them back in. Her body was responding despite her stillness, her nipples tight and flushed, her hips tilting toward his hand. When he withdrew his fingers and positioned himself between her legs, she opened her eyes and looked at the ceiling. He pushed into her and she exhaled slowly, her body accepting him without resistance.
No one spoke. No one protested. No one kissed. The couplings were functional, stripped of intimacy or tenderness. Bodies meeting bodies for a purpose. The room filled with the wet sounds of penetration, the slap of skin against skin, the occasional grunt or gasp. It was simply what happened here.
You'll get used to it, Cale said, noticing her expression. Everyone does.
Tessa doubted that very much.
Back in her assigned quarters, a small room with a cot and a locker, Tessa sat on the thin mattress and stared at her hands. The bandage on her arm was already peeling at the edges. She could feel the implant in her shoulder if she concentrated, a tiny foreign object that marked her as property.
Mark's face came to her again. The way he used to hold her, gentle and slow. The way they had talked about children someday, when the world was safer. When they were ready.
The world had never gotten safer. And now she would bear children, but not his. Not their children. Colony children. Resources for a system that saw her as nothing but a vessel.
A tear slid down her cheek. She wiped it away with the back of her hand.
Somewhere in the compound, a bell rang. Through the thin walls, she heard the sounds of movement, of doors opening and closing. The colony was shifting into its next phase, its endless cycle of production and reproduction.
Tessa lay back on the cot and closed her eyes. She had signed the contract. She had received the implants. She had seen what her life would become.
Tomorrow she would meet her assigned pair. Tomorrow the real work would begin.
Tonight, she let herself grieve one last time.
