Arrival and Introductions

Hilda leaned forward in the passenger seat as the SUV crested the final hill, her breath catching at the sight of the cabin nestled against the pines. The place looked exactly like the photos Magnus had shown her weeks ago, all weathered wood and wide windows overlooking the valley below. Snow dusted the roof already, even though the real storm was still days away according to the forecast. She turned to her husband with a smile that felt easy and bright.

"It's perfect," she said, reaching over to squeeze his thigh. "I can't believe you managed to book it for the whole weekend."

Magnus grinned, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he guided the car down the gravel drive. "Rene's the one who found it, actually. Said his uncle used to own it. Figured the three of us could use a break from the office grind."

Hilda nodded, already imagining the quiet days ahead. No emails, no meetings, just the three of them and whatever the mountains decided to offer. She had packed light but deliberately, choosing soft sweaters and leggings that hugged her athletic frame without trying too hard. Her long dark hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, and she felt the familiar warmth of anticipation settle low in her belly. This was going to be good for them, she told herself. Time away from everything.

They parked and climbed out into the crisp air. Hilda stretched, rolling her shoulders as she took in the silence broken only by wind through the trees. Magnus unlocked the door and they stepped inside together. The cabin smelled of cedar and faint wood smoke, the main room opening into a vaulted living area with a stone fireplace already stocked with logs. A kitchen sat to the left, simple but well-equipped, and a hallway led back to three bedrooms.

"You take the master," Magnus said, carrying their bags down the hall. "I'll show you around."

Hilda followed, unpacking her things into the dresser while Magnus pointed out the bathroom with its deep tub and the small reading nook by the window. She moved methodically, folding clothes and setting out her toiletries, her mind drifting to the evenings they would spend here. When they finished, she wandered back to the living room and ran her hand along the back of the leather couch, already picturing how the fire would look once it was lit.

"Rene should be here by seven," Magnus called from the kitchen where he was checking the fridge. "He had to wrap up a few things at the office first."

Hilda smiled at the mention of her husband's coworker. She had met Rene a handful of times at company events, always struck by how quietly he carried himself compared to the louder personalities in their circle. There was something steady about him, something that made conversations linger a little longer than necessary. She pushed the thought aside and joined Magnus to help unpack the groceries they had brought.

The afternoon passed in easy rhythm. They lit the fire, unpacked the rest of their things, and took a short walk along the trail behind the cabin. By the time the light began to fade, Hilda felt relaxed in a way she hadn't in months. She changed into a soft gray sweater and dark jeans, brushing her hair out so it fell in waves over her shoulders. When headlights cut through the trees outside, she felt a small spark of interest flicker to life.

Magnus opened the door before Rene could knock. The taller man stepped inside carrying a duffel and a bottle of wine, his broad shoulders filling the frame. Short black hair, piercing blue eyes that seemed to take in the room in one calm sweep. He wore a simple black sweater and jeans that did nothing to hide the toned physique underneath. Hilda felt her gaze linger a second too long before she stepped forward with a smile.

"Rene, good to see you again," she said, extending her hand. His grip was warm and firm, his voice low when he answered.

"Hilda. Thanks for letting me crash your weekend. The place looks even better than I remembered."

Magnus clapped him on the back and took the wine. "You kidding? We owe you for finding it. Come on in. Dinner's almost ready."

They moved to the kitchen together. Hilda stirred the pot of chili she had started earlier while the men caught up on work, their conversation easy and laced with the kind of shorthand that came from years of shared projects. She listened without interrupting, noting the way Rene's measured tone contrasted with Magnus's quick humor. Every now and then Rene glanced her way, and she caught the subtle curve of a smile at the corner of his mouth.

Once the table was set, they sat down together. The fire crackled behind them, casting warm light across the room. Hilda poured wine and passed the glasses, her fingers brushing Rene's for the briefest moment as she handed him his. She felt the contact more than she expected and tucked the sensation away.

"So how did you two end up working together?" she asked, directing the question at Rene. He leaned back slightly, one hand resting on the table.

"Magnus pulled me into the team two years ago. Said he needed someone who could keep the numbers straight while he handled the clients. We've been stuck with each other ever since."

Magnus laughed. "Stuck is one word for it. The guy's saved my ass more times than I can count."

Hilda watched Rene as he spoke, noting the quiet confidence in his posture. He didn't fill the silences with extra words, and when he did speak his voice stayed low and even. She found herself leaning forward without meaning to, drawn into the rhythm of his answers. When he asked about her work, she answered easily, describing the design projects she was juggling. His eyes stayed on her face, attentive in a way that made her pulse pick up.

After dinner they cleared the table together. Hilda stood at the sink rinsing plates while Rene dried, their shoulders close in the small space. She could smell the faint scent of his cologne mixed with wood smoke from the fire. Magnus moved around them, stacking dishes and keeping the conversation light. Every time Rene passed her a plate their fingers met again, and each time the touch lasted a fraction longer than necessary.

They moved to the living room once the kitchen was clean. Magnus dropped onto the couch and patted the spot beside him. Hilda sat, tucking her legs under her, and Rene took the armchair across from them. The fire popped and settled, throwing shadows across the walls. Conversation drifted from work to travel to the forecast calling for snow by morning. Hilda found herself watching Rene's hands as he spoke, broad and capable, resting on his knees. She wondered what those hands would feel like against her skin and immediately pushed the thought down, heat rising in her cheeks.

"You okay?" Magnus asked, glancing at her.

"Just warm from the fire," she said, smiling. Her eyes flicked back to Rene and caught him watching her. He didn't look away immediately, and the moment stretched just long enough for her to feel the spark of something new beneath the surface of their easy evening.

They talked until the wine was gone and the hour grew late. Rene stood first, stretching with a quiet groan that drew Hilda's attention to the line of his shoulders. "I should get some sleep. Long drive tomorrow if the weather turns."

Magnus nodded. "Guest room is all yours. Thanks again for coming up."

Hilda rose as well, offering Rene a small wave. "Glad you're here. It feels more like a real getaway with three of us."

His blue eyes met hers again, steady and unreadable. "Me too."

She watched him disappear down the hallway, then turned back to Magnus with a soft smile. The cabin felt fuller already, the air charged with the quiet promise of the days ahead. Hilda banked the fire and followed her husband to bed, her thoughts lingering on the low timbre of Rene's voice and the way his presence had already begun to shift the space around them.
