Introduction and Setup
Leslie Terrell woke at five thirty sharp, the same time she had for the past twelve years. Her apartment was silent except for the low hum of the air conditioner, and she moved through her routine with military precision. She stripped off her silk nightgown, stepped under the scalding shower, and let the water beat against her athletic frame until her skin flushed. The strict discipline kept everything else at bay. Desires. Distractions. The quiet, nagging pull she refused to name.
She dressed in her usual tailored charcoal suit, the jacket buttoned high over a crisp white blouse. Her auburn hair went into its tight bun without a single strand escaping. In the mirror her piercing green eyes stared back, sharp and controlled. No one at the university would ever guess what lay beneath that composed surface. She liked it that way.
By seven she was in her office on campus, reviewing faculty reports and sipping black coffee. The day unfolded exactly as she planned. Meetings. Emails. Decisions made with cool authority. Yet every so often a restless heat flickered low in her belly, a reminder of needs she had buried under layers of responsibility. She pushed it down the way she always did.
The email arrived at ten fifteen. Mandatory leadership workshop. One full afternoon. Led by some visiting expert in mindful influence techniques. Leslie read it twice, irritation already tightening her jaw. She did not have time for this nonsense. Her calendar was full, her staff needed her, and the last thing she wanted was some feel-good seminar telling her how to relax. Still, the provost had made it clear. Attendance was required for all deans.
She finished her coffee and stood. "Fine," she muttered. "Let's get it over with."
The workshop room was on the second floor of the administration building. Leslie pushed the door open at precisely one o'clock and immediately felt her mood darken further. The space had been rearranged into a loose circle of comfortable chairs instead of the usual conference table. Soft lighting replaced the harsh fluorescents. A low, ambient track played from hidden speakers. It already felt like an intrusion on her ordered world.
At the front stood a woman who could only be the presenter. Mid-thirties, sleek black hair falling in a precise line to her shoulders, dark expressive eyes that seemed to take in everything at once. Dr. Ivana Driscoll wore a fitted navy dress that managed to be both professional and quietly alluring. She smiled as Leslie entered, and something about that smile made Leslie's steps slow.
"Dean Terrell," Ivana said, voice smooth and warm. "I'm glad you could join us. Please, take any seat you like."
Leslie gave a curt nod and chose a chair near the back. Around her sat a handful of other faculty members, all looking mildly resigned. She crossed her legs and checked her watch. Two hours. She could survive two hours.
Ivana began with the usual introductions, her tone academic and precise. She spoke about stress in high-pressure environments, the value of mental clarity, and techniques drawn from clinical hypnosis that could sharpen focus. Leslie listened with half an ear, already planning the rest of her afternoon. Then Ivana dimmed the lights further and asked everyone to get comfortable.
"I'd like to demonstrate a simple relaxation exercise," Ivana said. "Nothing dramatic. Just a guided breathing and imagery session so you can feel how quickly the mind can shift into a calmer state. Close your eyes if you wish. Follow my voice."
Leslie kept her eyes open at first. She watched Ivana move among the group, speaking softly to each participant. The woman's presence was magnetic. When Ivana reached Leslie's chair, she paused.
"You seem particularly tense, Dean Terrell. May I?"
Before Leslie could answer, Ivana placed two fingers lightly on her wrist, checking her pulse with clinical calm. The touch was brief but warm. Leslie felt an odd little spark travel up her arm.
"Breathe with me," Ivana murmured. "In for four. Hold for four. Out for six. Let the tension leave your shoulders. Good."
Leslie told herself she was only humoring the woman. Yet her breathing slowed. Her eyelids grew heavier. Around the room other participants were already slumping in their chairs, faces slack with relaxation. Ivana continued speaking in that measured, hypnotic cadence, guiding them all deeper.
"Imagine your thoughts drifting like leaves on a stream. Each breath carries another worry away. You are safe here. You can let go, just for a little while."
Leslie's mind drifted despite her resistance. The room felt distant. Ivana's voice wrapped around her like silk. Somewhere in the haze she heard the other woman lean close, her breath brushing Leslie's ear.
"When you hear the phrase 'open for guidance,' you will feel a deep, pleasant release," Ivana whispered, so softly only Leslie could hear. "You will want to listen. You will want to obey. And each time you obey, the pleasure will grow stronger."
The words sank in before Leslie could question them. A strange warmth bloomed in her chest and lower, unexpected and oddly welcome. Then Ivana straightened and continued addressing the whole group in her normal tone.
Minutes later the session ended. People blinked and stretched, murmuring about how relaxed they felt. Leslie sat up straighter, trying to shake off the lingering fog. Her pulse was elevated. She felt oddly flushed.
Ivana caught her eye from across the room and smiled again, that same knowing curve of lips.
"Thank you all for participating," Ivana said. "We'll continue tomorrow with individual follow-ups for anyone who would like deeper work. Dean Terrell, I hope you'll consider it. You carry a great deal of responsibility. A little targeted release can make all the difference."
Leslie stood, smoothing her jacket. "We'll see," she replied, voice cool. Yet inside, something had shifted. The whispered phrase echoed in her mind like a half-remembered dream, and the warmth it had stirred refused to fade entirely.
She left the room irritated at herself for staying so long, irritated at the strange pull she already felt toward another session. The day continued as planned, but every so often her thoughts drifted back to Ivana's voice and the quiet command hidden inside it. She told herself it was nothing. Just a silly exercise. Still, the seed had been planted, and Leslie could not quite dismiss the way her body had responded.
