The Failing Grade

Jessie Harber slumped lower in her seat near the back of the lecture hall, her long auburn hair spilling over one shoulder like a copper wave. The sharp green eyes that usually sparkled with quiet confidence now burned with disbelief. Professor Hentner moved between the rows of desks with that insufferable precision of his, returning graded midterms without a word of kindness. When he dropped her paper on the desk, the blood-red F at the top seemed to scream up at her.

She stared at it for a long moment, fingers tightening around the edges until the pages crinkled. Forty-two percent. She had poured weeks into that analysis of behavioral conditioning, and he had the nerve to scribble condescending notes in the margins. Things like "superficial" and "lacks intellectual rigor." Her athletic frame tensed beneath her tight black jeans and simple gray sweater. She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks.

Around her, the other students gathered their things as class ended. The murmur of relieved voices and shuffling papers filled the room. Jessie did not move. Her eyes tracked Dr. Milo Hentner as he returned to the front of the hall. Mid-forties, tall and lean in his crisp button-down and tailored slacks, salt-and-pepper hair perfectly combed. He looked every bit the arrogant academic who believed his intellect placed him above everyone else. Especially her.

She slipped her phone from her backpack, intending to check the time, but her thumb brushed the new app icon instead. The one she had almost forgotten about in the chaos of midterms. The inheritance from her late Aunt Evelyn had arrived two weeks earlier, a small package containing an unlocked smartphone and a thick envelope of handwritten notes. Jessie had glanced at them once, dismissed them as the ramblings of an eccentric relative, and tossed the phone into a drawer.

Now, with that failing grade burning a hole in her bag, she opened the notes app on the device. The first entry was dated six months before her aunt's death.

"Jessie, if you're reading this, I'm gone and you've found the app. Don't delete it. This isn't a game or a prank. The program I built uses targeted light frequencies and subliminal audio layers to override the human nervous system. Motor control. Memory access. Suggestion implantation. It works faster than any traditional hypnosis because it bypasses the critical mind entirely. Test it carefully. Start small. The subject won't remember the trigger if you command them not to. I've included a starter command list in the app. Be clever, darling. Power like this changes everything."

Jessie's pulse quickened as she scrolled further. Detailed logs of her aunt's experiments. A professor who suddenly forgot his own office number in front of colleagues. A neighbor who couldn't stop tapping his foot for an hour after a casual conversation. Diagrams of how the visual induction worked. A simple spiral pattern on the screen paired with a specific voice command could lock in suggestions that felt completely natural to the target.

She looked up. Most of the students had filed out. Only a few lingered near the door, chatting. Dr. Hentner was wiping the whiteboard with sharp, efficient strokes. This was insane. It couldn't possibly be real. And yet the detailed notes, the careful language, the sheer confidence in her aunt's handwriting made something dark and eager stir in Jessie's chest.

She stood, slung her backpack over one shoulder, and walked to the front of the room. Her confident posture shifted into something sharper, more predatory. The tall athletic build that usually drew appreciative glances now felt like a weapon. Hentner turned as she approached, his sharp features settling into that familiar mask of polite superiority.

"Miss Harber. I assume this is about your midterm." His voice carried the clipped precision of a man who had given this speech a hundred times. "I don't usually discuss grades immediately after class, but since you're here, I'll make an exception."

"Yeah, I don't understand it," Jessie said, keeping her tone light even as anger simmered beneath. She placed the paper on his desk. "I followed all your instructions. I cited the sources you wanted. This is bullshit."

He sighed, the sound dripping with academic condescension. "Language, Miss Harber. A senior psychology major should express herself with more sophistication. Your paper lacked depth. You summarized the theories instead of critiquing them. For instance, in your section on cognitive dissonance, you completely missed the connection to Festinger's original experiments. Here, let me illustrate the point I made in lecture today."

Jessie's fingers tightened around her phone. She opened the app. The screen glowed softly with a subtle pulsing spiral that was almost invisible unless you looked directly at it. According to the notes, the first step was getting the target to focus on the pattern for three seconds. The motor override commands were listed in a clean menu. "Temporary memory block. Verbal center disruption. Specific phrase trigger."

She held the phone casually at her side, angling it so the screen faced him as he leaned forward to point at her paper. His eyes flicked down to it automatically.

"You see," he continued, voice smooth and lecturing, "true understanding of cognitive dissonance requires recognizing how the tension between belief and action creates measurable physiological responses. The subject experiences elevated heart rate, increased perspiration, and... and..."

His words faltered.

Jessie had selected the command while he spoke. A simple one. "Forget the next point you are about to make about cognitive dissonance. Stand there confused for five full seconds before recovering." The app had flashed a confirmation sequence too quick for human eyes to register consciously.

Hentner's mouth opened, then closed. His sharp features clouded with sudden confusion. He blinked rapidly, one hand rising halfway to his temple as if trying to physically retrieve the thought. For five long seconds he simply stood there, staring at her paper like it had betrayed him. A soft, bewildered sound escaped his throat.

"Dr. Hentner?" Jessie prompted, her voice sweet with false concern. Inside, something electric crackled through her veins. This couldn't be happening. Yet it was. The great Professor Hentner, reduced to a stuttering mess by a few lines of code and her aunt's impossible invention.

He shook his head as the five seconds ended. Color rose in his lean cheeks. "I... appear to have lost my train of thought. How unusual. I was explaining... something about physiological markers, I believe."

Two students still lingered by the door. They glanced over at the sound of their professor's uncharacteristic hesitation. One of them smirked. The public stumble sent a hot rush of pleasure through Jessie's body. She could feel her nipples tighten against her sweater. The power was immediate. Intoxicating. Like the first hit of a drug she hadn't known she craved.

"You were saying my paper was superficial," she reminded him, tilting her head so her auburn hair caught the light. Her green eyes locked on his with new intensity. "But it seems like you're the one having trouble articulating basic concepts right now. That's funny, isn't it?"

Hentner straightened, clearly unsettled. His salt-and-pepper hair caught the fluorescent lights as he ran a hand through it. "Miss Harber, I don't appreciate sarcasm. Your grade stands. If you wish to improve it, I suggest rewriting the paper with actual academic substance rather than relying on clever phrasing and..." He paused again, as if worried another mental blank might strike. "And come to my office hours next week if you require further clarification."

Jessie smiled. It was not her usual playful grin. This one had teeth. The app felt warm in her hand, full of terrifying potential. Motor overrides. Irresistible suggestions. She could make him do anything. Forget anything. Say anything. The failing grade no longer felt like a defeat. It felt like the spark that would burn his entire arrogant world down.

"You know what, Professor?" she said, voice dropping into something almost teasing. "I think I will come by your office. Soon. Maybe I'll bring a few new ideas for you to consider. Ones that might stick in your head better than whatever you were trying to explain just now."

He frowned, clearly trying to regain control of the conversation. "See that you do. And Miss Harber? Try to remember that I set the standards in this class. Not you."

Jessie turned to leave, her athletic legs carrying her with fresh purpose. She could feel his eyes on her back. The initial thrill of power still buzzed through every nerve. He had no idea what she had just done to him. No memory of the blank spot she had carved into his brilliant mind. The notes had been clear. The subject would rationalize the lapse. He would probably convince himself he was simply tired or distracted.

She paused at the door and glanced back. Hentner was staring at the whiteboard again, brow furrowed. The two remaining students had finally left. The lecture hall felt suddenly intimate. Jessie's mind raced with possibilities. Petty revenge was only the beginning. She could train him. Condition him. Turn every condescending lecture into a private game of control.

Her sharp green eyes narrowed with wicked delight. The Campus Hypno Queen had just received her first taste of power, and it was sweeter than she had ever imagined. Dr. Milo Hentner was going to learn exactly how it felt to lose control. One irresistible suggestion at a time.

As she stepped into the hallway, Jessie opened the app again. She created a new profile. Subject: Dr. Milo Hentner. She typed in her first permanent note under his file.

"Every time you see me from now on, you will feel a small, inexplicable flicker of unease in your stomach. You will tell yourself it's nothing. But it will grow."

She saved it. The app pulsed once in confirmation.

Jessie smiled to herself as she walked away, long auburn hair swaying with each confident step. The failing grade was no longer a humiliation. It was an invitation. And she intended to RSVP with every filthy, degrading, public lesson she could dream up.

The seeds of revenge had been planted. Now all that remained was to watch them bloom into something beautifully cruel.
