The Commissioned Pose

Eddie Braun adjusted the cuff of his jacket as he and Lucia stepped through the heavy glass doors of the Curtis Gallery. The space opened into a cavern of white walls and dramatic lighting, where sculptures stood like silent sentinels among clusters of patrons in tailored suits and flowing dresses. The low hum of conversation mixed with the faint clink of champagne glasses. Eddie felt the familiar mix of admiration and distance that always came with these events. He was here as her husband, not as an artist tonight.

Lucia walked beside him with that effortless grace she carried everywhere, her long auburn waves catching the light as she scanned the room. Her porcelain skin glowed against the deep green of her dress, and Eddie caught the subtle way her expressive eyes lit up at the sight of familiar faces. She was in her element here, and that alone made the evening worth it.

“Looks like the usual crowd,” Eddie said quietly, leaning close enough that only she could hear. “Patrons pretending they understand the work, artists pretending they don’t care.”

Lucia smiled, a soft breathy sound escaping her. “You say that every time, love. Come on. Let’s mingle before you retreat to a corner with a sketchbook.”

They moved through the room together, pausing at small groups. Eddie offered polite nods and handshakes while Lucia exchanged warm greetings with a few models and curators she knew from past shoots. Her voice stayed light, almost poetic in its cadence, as she described a recent session. Eddie watched her, pride swelling quietly in his chest. She had built this network on her own, and he loved seeing her navigate it with such poise.

Then the air in the room seemed to shift. A tall figure cut through the crowd with measured steps, his presence drawing eyes without effort. Bowen Curtis stopped a few feet away, sharp gray eyes fixed on Lucia. His silver-streaked hair was close-cropped, and his powerful frame filled the tailored black shirt he wore. He carried the quiet authority of someone used to being obeyed.

“Lucia Braun,” Bowen said, his low voice precise and commanding. “I’ve been hoping you would attend tonight.”

Lucia turned fully toward him, her posture straightening in that graceful way she had. “Mr. Curtis. It’s an honor. Your last exhibition was extraordinary.”

Bowen’s mouth curved in the barest hint of a smile. “Call me Bowen. And the honor is mine. I’ve followed your work as a model for some time. Your lines are exceptional. Natural. Unforced.” His gaze traveled over her once, not crude but assessing, like an artist measuring clay before the first touch. “I represent a small collective of sculptors. We work outside the usual gallery circuits. Private commissions. Extended sessions. We’re looking for a muse who can hold presence across multiple pieces.”

Eddie stayed close at Lucia’s side, one hand resting lightly at the small of her back. Pride flickered through him at the recognition, yet a subtle unease began to thread beneath it. Bowen’s aura was too controlled, too intense. The man spoke as if decisions were already made.

“A collective?” Lucia asked, her green eyes bright with interest. She tilted her head, auburn waves shifting over one shoulder. “I’ve heard whispers about your group. Very selective.”

“We are,” Bowen replied. He stepped half a pace closer, voice dropping just enough to create a pocket of intimacy amid the surrounding chatter. “We don’t pose models like statues. We work with living form. Light draping at first. Guided adjustments. The goal is transcendence, not mere replication. I watched you move through the room tonight. You already understand stillness as power.”

The conversation held a charged undercurrent. Bowen’s words landed with weight, each one deliberate. Lucia listened without interrupting, her breath visibly slower, more measured. Eddie noticed the faint flush rising along her throat, the way her fingers brushed the stem of her glass. There it was, the first subtle spark, a quiet current passing between them that felt more than professional. Bowen saw it too. His gray eyes held hers a moment longer than necessary.

Eddie cleared his throat gently. “Sounds intense. My wife’s schedule is already full with commissions.”

Bowen’s attention flicked to him, respectful but unyielding. “Of course. Eddie Braun, correct? The sculptor. Your own pieces show promise. This would not interfere with existing work. We offer a private studio, complete discretion, and compensation that reflects the commitment.” He returned his focus to Lucia. “One session to begin. Clothed. You decide the boundaries. If the connection holds, we extend.”

Lucia’s lips parted slightly. “A private commission,” she repeated, testing the words. Intrigue colored her tone, though she kept it measured. “I would need to discuss it with Eddie, naturally. We keep professional lines clear.”

“Naturally,” Bowen echoed, the word carrying a trace of teasing approval. “I expect nothing less. My card.” He produced a simple black rectangle from his pocket and placed it in her hand, fingers brushing hers for the briefest moment. “Call when you’re ready. The collective meets next week. I believe you would elevate everything we create.”

He gave a small nod to Eddie, then turned and disappeared back into the crowd with the same quiet command he had arrived with.

Lucia slipped the card into her clutch, her expression thoughtful. Eddie felt the pride again, stronger now that the invitation had landed, yet the unease lingered like a faint shadow. Bowen Curtis was not a man who offered lightly, and the way Lucia’s eyes followed him for a second too long told Eddie the spark had registered on both sides.

“He’s intense,” Eddie said after a moment, keeping his voice even.

“He is,” Lucia agreed, turning to him with a soft smile that didn’t quite hide the new light in her gaze. “But it sounds like a serious opportunity. Professional only, of course.”

Eddie nodded, squeezing her hand. The evening continued around them, but the air between them had already changed, carrying the quiet weight of an invitation neither had expected.
