The Dance

Larina sat in front of the cracked mirror and stared at the stranger looking back at her.

Red sequins clung to her like a second skin, the costume cut low enough to make every breath a calculated risk. Her dark hair had been forced into long, glossy waves. Makeup sharpened her eyes and softened her mouth until even she had trouble finding the journalist underneath. She looked like the kind of woman men paid to watch. That was the point.

She pressed her palms flat against her thighs and forced herself to breathe. In. Out. The dressing room smelled of cheap perfume, hairspray, and other women’s nerves. Somewhere beyond the thin walls the bass was already rolling, a low, constant pressure that vibrated through the floor and into the metal legs of her chair.

This is just another assignment, she told herself. Observe. Record. Get close enough to the syndicate to matter. Do not feel anything.

The mental checklist had worked in every other undercover job. It was not working tonight.

Tony’s voice cut through the noise outside the door. “Five minutes, new girl. Don’t make me come looking for you.”

Larina stood. Her heels clicked once on the linoleum. She checked the hidden recorder one last time, then the small knife taped high on her inner thigh where the costume’s high slit would hide it. Tools of the trade. Proof that she was still in control.

She opened the door.

Tony was already walking. She followed him through the narrow back hallway, past racks of costumes and the sour smell of spilled liquor, until they reached the back of the stage. The music was a low thrum, vibrating through the walls. She could hear the crowd, a dull roar of voices mixed with laughter.

Tony stopped at the curtain. "Wait for your cue. The DJ will announce you. Don't mess this up."

He walked away, leaving her alone in the shadows. She peeked through the curtain and saw the club spread out before her.

It was a symphony of sensory overload. Bass thrummed through the floor, vibrating up through her heels. Lights pulsed in shades of blue and purple, cutting through the haze of cigarette smoke. The air was thick with cologne and sweat and something electric. The main floor was packed with tables and booths, filled with men in suits and women in dresses. The stage was a raised platform in the center, surrounded by a sea of faces.

And above it all, the VIP booth. Elevated, secluded, a throne of black leather and chrome. She couldn't see him from here, but she knew he was there. Matteo Stasli, watching.

The DJ's voice cut through the noise. "And now, give it up for our newest gem, the beautiful Lena!"

The crowd cheered. The lights shifted, focusing on the stage. She drew a slow breath, stepped through the curtain, and climbed the steps.

The heat of the lights hit her like a wave. The music started, a slow, pulsing beat that she had memorized. She closed her eyes for a second, found her center, and began to move.

The dance was a ritual of controlled seduction. She ran her hands down her body, tracing the lines of her hips, arching her back. She gripped the brass pole and spun, letting the momentum carry her. The crowd dissolved into a blur of shapes and sounds. She focused on the music, on the movement, on being Lena.

But then she saw him.

He was sitting in the VIP booth, leaning back in his chair, a glass of whiskey on the table in front of him. He was exactly like the file had described. Dark hair, sharp jaw, eyes that seemed to cut through the dim light. He wore a tailored black suit, no tie, the top button of his shirt undone. He looked relaxed, but there was a coiled tension in his posture, a predator at rest.

He was watching her.

Their eyes met across the club, and the world narrowed to that single point of contact. His gaze was intense, unwavering, like he was seeing past the sequins and the makeup, past the stage name, straight into the core of her. She felt exposed in a way that had nothing to do with the costume.

Her body moved on autopilot. She turned, bent, swayed, but her attention was fixed on him. He didn't smile. He didn't react. He just watched, his fingers drumming a slow rhythm on the table. It was like he was conducting her, controlling her movements from across the room.

She felt a flush of heat. Not from the lights, but from his gaze. It was possessive, claiming. It made her feel like she was the only woman in the room.

And she hated how much she liked it.

The song built to a crescendo. She dropped to her knees, arched her back, ran her hands through her hair. The crowd roared, but she only heard the blood rushing in her ears. She looked up at him, and he raised his glass in a slow, deliberate toast.

Then the music ended. She took a shaky bow and hurried off the stage, her legs trembling.

Back in the dressing room, she leaned against the wall and tried to catch her breath. Her hands were shaking. Her pulse hammered against her ribs. She pressed a palm to her chest and felt the frantic rhythm.

What was that? She had danced for crowds before, but never like that. Never with such intensity. He had pulled something out of her, something raw and primal.

She was supposed to be gathering intel. She was supposed to be objective. But for a moment, she had forgotten why she was there. She had been lost in his eyes, in the power of his gaze.

Her phone buzzed again. Another text from Kline: "Report."

She stared at the screen. She should call him. She should tell him that she had made contact, that Matteo had noticed her. But she didn't. She couldn't. Not yet. She needed to process what had happened, to sort through the jumble of emotions.

She typed back: "Later."

Then she shoved the phone in her bag and exhaled slowly.

The door opened, and Tony walked in. He didn't knock this time. "The boss wants to see you."

Her stomach dropped. "Me?"

"You're the new girl. He likes to meet the new girls." Tony's voice was flat, but there was a warning in it. "Don't keep him waiting."

She followed him through the maze of hallways, past the main floor, past the private rooms, to a door at the end of the corridor. It was unmarked, but Tony knocked twice, then opened it.

The room was an office, but it didn't look like one. It was decorated in dark wood and leather, with a massive desk at one end and a bar along the wall. The lighting was dim, intimate, casting long shadows. And in the center of the room, leaning against the desk, was Matteo Stasli.

He was even more imposing up close. Tall, broad-shouldered, with a presence that filled the space. His eyes were dark, almost black, and they swept over her with a slow, deliberate assessment. She felt like a specimen under a microscope.

"Lena," he said, and his voice was deep, smooth, like honey over gravel. "I've been watching you."

She swallowed. "I hope I lived up to expectations."

A flicker of something crossed his face. Amusement? Interest? "You have a natural talent. But I'm more interested in what happens after the dance."

He pushed off from the desk and walked toward her. She held her ground, even as her pulse quickened. He stopped inches away, close enough that she could smell his cologne, something woodsy and expensive, mixed with the faint scent of whiskey. He was tall, towering over her, and she had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes.

"Dance for me," he said. "Again. Just for me."

It wasn't a request. It was a command.

The music started, a different song, slower, more intimate. She didn't know where it was coming from, but she didn't question it. She began to move, her body responding to the beat, to his gaze.

He circled her, his eyes never leaving her body. She felt his attention like a spotlight, burning into her skin. She turned, arched, let her hands trail over her curves. She was trying to maintain control, to remember her mission, but it was slipping away.

He stepped closer, and his hand caught her wrist, stopping her movement. His touch was warm, firm, and it sent a jolt through her, electric and immediate.

"You're nervous," he said, his voice low. "I can feel it."

"I'm not."

"Liar." He smiled, and it was a dangerous thing. "I like that. It means you're not boring."

He released her wrist, but his hand moved to her hip, guiding her movement. She followed his lead, her body molding to his touch. He was in control now, and she let him be. It was terrifying and exhilarating.

"You're new to this world," he said, his lips close to her ear. "I can see it in your eyes. You're looking for something."

"I'm just a dancer."

"You're a terrible liar." His hand slid up her side, over her ribs, stopping just below her breast. His thumb traced the edge of her costume, a featherlight touch that made her shiver. "But I find that interesting."

She sucked in a breath. Her mind was screaming at her to pull away, to remember who she was. But her body was leaning into him, craving his touch. The heat of his hand, the pressure of his fingers, the way he seemed to know exactly where to touch her.

"I don't know what you want," she managed, her voice barely a whisper.

"I want to see how far you'll go." His thumb dipped lower, tracing the curve of her breast. "I want to see if you're as brave as you pretend to be."

His fingers found the clasp at the back of her costume, and with a deft movement, he unhooked it. The sequined top loosened, the fabric sliding forward, barely held in place by the pressure of his palm against her chest. She gasped, her eyes widening, but she didn't pull away.

"That's it," he murmured. "Don't think. Just feel."

He peeled the costume down, baring her breasts to the cool air of the office. His eyes darkened as he looked at her, his gaze heavy with hunger. His thumb brushed over her nipple, and it hardened instantly, peaking under his touch. A soft moan escaped her lips before she could stop it.

"Beautiful," he breathed. He rolled the sensitive bud between his thumb and forefinger, tugging gently, sending sparks of pleasure cascading down her body. She gripped his shoulders for balance, her knees going weak.

His other hand slid down to the small of her back, pulling her closer until her bare chest pressed against the fine fabric of his suit. The contrast of cool silk and warm skin made her shudder. He dipped his head, his lips finding the curve of her neck, trailing hot, open-mouthed kisses along her collarbone.

She tilted her head back, giving him access, her fingers tangling in his dark hair. His mouth moved lower, his tongue tracing a path down to her breast. When he took her nipple into his mouth, she cried out, her hips bucking forward instinctively. He sucked hard, his teeth grazing the sensitive flesh, while his hand kneaded her other breast, pinching and rolling the nipple.

The pleasure was overwhelming, building like a wave inside her. She could feel the wetness pooling between her thighs, the ache intensifying with every stroke of his tongue. She rocked against him, seeking friction, seeking release.

He pulled back suddenly, leaving her gasping. His eyes were black with desire, his breathing ragged. He looked at her, flushed and trembling, her costume hanging loose around her waist, and something primal flickered across his face.

"You're full of surprises," he said, his voice rough. His hand moved to the slit in her costume, finding the bare skin of her inner thigh. He stroked upward, slowly, deliberately, until his fingers reached the damp silk of her underwear.

She whimpered, her legs parting wider, giving him access. He pushed the fabric aside and slid one finger along her slick folds, groaning when he felt how wet she was. He circled her clit with his thumb, applying just enough pressure to make her see stars.

"So responsive," he murmured against her ear. "So ready."

He slipped a finger inside her, and she clenched around him, her body arching into his hand. He added a second finger, pumping slowly, his thumb still working her clit in tight, maddening circles. The pressure built inside her, coiling tighter and tighter.

"Come for me," he commanded, his voice low and rough. "Let go."

And she did. The orgasm crashed through her like a storm, her body shaking, her inner walls clenching around his fingers. She cried out, her nails digging into his shoulders, her face buried against his neck. He held her through it, his fingers still moving, drawing out every last wave of pleasure until she was spent and trembling.

He withdrew his hand slowly, bringing his fingers to his lips. He tasted her, his eyes never leaving hers, and the gesture was so intimate, so erotic, that she felt another pulse of desire.

"You'll dance for me again," he said, his voice thick with promise. "Tomorrow night. And the night after that. Until I decide what I want to do with you."

She nodded, not trusting her voice.

"You can go now." He waved a hand, dismissive. "But Lena?"

She paused at the door.

"Don't disappoint me."

She left the room on shaking legs. The hallway was empty, quiet. She leaned against the wall and pressed a hand to her chest, feeling her pulse race. Her skin was still tingling from his touch. Her mind was a whirlwind of confusion and desire.

She had come here to gather intel. She had come here to expose the syndicate. She had spent months preparing for this, building a cover, learning the moves. But after one night, after one look, after one touch, she was already in over her head.

And the worst part was, she didn't want to get out.

She wanted to dance for him again. She wanted to feel his hands on her. She wanted to know what it would be like to surrender completely.

She was supposed to be objective. She was supposed to be a journalist. But Matteo Stasli had shattered her defenses with a single touch, and she was falling.

She pushed off from the wall and walked back to the dressing room, her heels clicking on the floor. The night was far from over. And she had a feeling that nothing would ever be the same.

Her phone buzzed one last time. Kline again: "Status?"

She typed back: "Contact established. More tomorrow."

Then she turned off her phone and sat down in front of the mirror. She looked at her reflection, at the woman in the red sequins, and wondered who she was becoming.

Backstage Claim

The dressing room smelled like sweat and cheap perfume. Larina leaned against the vanity, her reflection staring back at her with wide, haunted eyes. Lena's eyes. The woman who had just danced for a room full of predators.

Her fingers wouldn't stop trembling.

She pressed them flat against the cold counter and forced herself to breathe. The performance had been flawless. Every move calculated. Every glance measured. But the moment those brown eyes had locked onto hers from the VIP booth, something had shifted. Something she couldn't name.

A knock at the door made her jump.

"Come in," she said, surprised her voice sounded steady.

The door opened and Tony Stasli stepped inside. He had the same dark hair as his cousin, but where Matteo moved like a predator, Tony moved like a bouncer. Solid and dependable, with a watchfulness that came from years of reading rooms for threats. His gaze swept the space before settling on her.

"Boss wants to see you."

Her pulse skipped. "Now?"

"He's waiting in his office." Tony gestured toward the hallway. "I'll take you up."

She grabbed her silk robe from the hook and wrapped it around herself, tying it loosely at the waist. Her costume underneath was still damp with perspiration. She felt exposed. Vulnerable. But that was good. That was the role.

The hallway was dimly lit, the walls lined with black and white photographs of old Brooklyn. Tony walked ahead of her, his footsteps echoing on the hardwood floors. They passed a few club employees who nodded respectfully and kept moving.

The office door was heavy, dark wood with a brass handle. Tony knocked twice.

"Come in."

Matteo's voice sent a shiver down her spine. Deep and smooth, it carried the authority of a man who expected obedience.

Tony pushed the door open and stepped aside. Larina walked in.

The office was larger than she expected. A massive mahogany desk dominated the center of the room, covered in papers and a single laptop. A leather couch sat against the far wall. The lighting was warm, amber, casting long shadows across the space. Matteo stood by the window, his back to her, looking out at the city lights.

"Leave us, Tony."

Tony nodded and closed the door behind him. The click of the lock was deafening.

Larina stood in the center of the room, her arms crossed loosely over her chest. She tried to look nervous. Unsure. It wasn't hard.

Matteo turned slowly. His suit jacket was off, his white shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows. The muscles in his forearms flexed as he crossed his arms and studied her.

"You did well tonight."

"Thank you."

"That first dance. The one with the chair. Where did you learn that?"

She swallowed. "Dance classes. Growing up."

He moved closer, his footsteps silent on the thick carpet. "You're not from around here."

"No."

"Where are you from?"

"Upstate. Small town. Nothing special."

He stopped a few feet away from her. His gaze traveled down her body and back up again, slow and deliberate. "You're nervous."

"Wouldn't you be? Alone in a room with the man who runs this place."

A smile played at the corner of his mouth. "Smart answer. But I don't think that's why you're nervous."

"Why do you think I'm nervous?"

He stepped closer. She could smell his cologne now. Something expensive and masculine. "Because you know why I brought you here."

Larina's breath caught in her throat. This was the moment. The moment where she either played her part perfectly or lost everything.

"You want to talk about my performance," she said, keeping her voice light.

"I want to talk about your safety."

That surprised her. "My safety?"

Matteo gestured to the couch. "Sit."

She sat. The leather was soft beneath her. He didn't sit next to her. Instead, he pulled a chair from across the room and placed it directly in front of her, sitting down so their knees almost touched.

"This club is my territory," he said. "My family's territory. But there are other families. Other players. And a woman like you, dancing the way you do, you're going to attract attention."

"Attention from you?"

"From me. From others. Some of that attention will be dangerous."

She tilted her head, studying him. "And you want to protect me from it?"

"I want to offer you protection. Exclusive protection." He leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. "You work for me now. That means you're mine to look after. But there are rules."

"What kind of rules?"

"You don't go home alone. You don't leave the club without someone from my team. You don't take private bookings without my approval." His eyes held hers. "And you don't dance for anyone else."

The possessiveness in his voice made her stomach tighten. "That sounds like a lot of rules."

"It's the price of safety."

"And if I don't want to pay it?"

He sat back, a hint of amusement in his expression. "Then you can wal

Club Politics

The dressing room felt different tonight. The same cracked mirrors, the same cheap vanity lights, but Larina's reflection showed a woman she barely recognized. Her hands trembled as she adjusted the strap of her costume, a deep crimson number that left little to the imagination. Two nights since Matteo's office. Two nights of replaying every touch, every command, each moment she'd surrendered to his hands.

"You're quiet tonight, Lena."

She forced a smile at the dancer beside her. "Just focusing."

"Focusing on a certain someone?" The woman winked. "Everyone saw you leave with the boss."

Larina's stomach tightened. "It's not like that."

"Sure it isn't."

She couldn't explain it because she didn't understand it herself. The way her body hummed when she thought of him. The way her pulse quickened at the memory of his voice telling her exactly what she wanted to hear. She was supposed to be gathering intel, not falling into his orbit.

Her phone buzzed. Kline's message was curt as always: Progress report due tomorrow. Need something concrete.

She typed back quickly: Working on it. Gaining trust.

A lie wrapped in truth. She was gaining something, but trust wasn't the right word. It was something deeper, something that made her stomach flip when she thought about what she was supposed to do next.

The club's bass thrummed through the floor as she made her way to the stage. The usual crowd packed the main floor, but tonight felt different. Tenser. The air crackled with something unspoken.

Tony caught her arm as she passed the bar. "Stay close tonight."

"Why?"

"Some players from the old neighborhood are paying a visit. Matteo wants things handled."

Her journalistic instincts flared. "What kind of players?"

"The kind that don't play nice." Tony's jaw tightened. "Just stay near the stage and do your thing. Matteo will handle the rest."

She nodded, but her mind raced. A rival crew. This was exactly the kind of intel Kline wanted. She needed to observe, to listen, to remember every detail.

The stage lights hit her as she climbed onto the platform. The music wrapped around her, and she let her body move, finding the rhythm that had become second nature. But tonight her eyes searched the VIP section, looking for him.

He was there. Of course he was there.

Matteo sat in his usual booth, but he wasn't alone. Three men flanked him, their suits sharp but their postures predatory. One of them, older with silver at his temples, leaned forward, speaking low and fast. Matteo's expression remained unreadable, but Larina saw the tension in his shoulders, the way his fingers drummed against the leather.

She kept dancing, but she watched. The older man gestured toward the stage, toward her, and something cold slithered down her spine.

Matteo's eyes met hers. Just a glance, but it held a warning. Stay away. Stay safe.

She didn't listen.

When her set ended, she slipped off the stage instead of heading back to the dressing room. She grabbed a tray, pretending to clear glasses from a nearby table, positioning herself close enough to hear.

"...new arrangement. We take the eastern docks, you keep the club."

"That's not how this works, Sal." Matteo's voice was smooth but edged with steel. "You don't come into my house and start carving it up."

"Your house?" The older man, Sal, laughed. "This was Frankie's house before you put him in the ground. You're just keeping the seat warm."

"And yet I'm still sitting in it."

The third man shifted, his hand moving toward his jacket. Tony stepped forward, positioning himself between the table and the floor. Larina's heart hammered.

"Easy," Matteo said, his voice dropping to something almost gentle. "We're all friends here. Sal's just feeling out the territory. Isn't that right?"

Sal's smile didn't reach his eyes. "Just paying respects to the new regime. Seeing how things are run."

"Then you've seen enough." Matteo stood, and the movement was fluid, controlled. "I'll have Tony show you out."

"Not yet." Sal's gaze drifted to Larina. "I want a dance first. From the redhead."

Every muscle in Larina's body locked. Matteo's expression didn't change, but she saw something flicker in his eyes. Something dangerous.

"She's not available," Matteo said.

"All the girls are available. That's the point of a club, isn't it?"

"She's mine."

The words hit her like a physical blow. Mine. He'd claimed her in front of everyone, in front of rivals who could use that information against him. The risk of it made her breath catch.

Sal's smile widened. "Yours? Since when does Matteo Stasli keep pets?"

"Since I decided to." Matteo stepped closer to the table, and the movement brought him between Sal and Larina. "You want a dance, you find someone else. You want a problem, we can take this outside."

The silence stretched. Larina's fingers dug into the tray she was holding, her knuckles white.

Sal laughed, but it was hollow. "Relax, kid. I'm just messing with you. We'll take our business elsewhere." He stood, straightening his jacket. "But think about my offer. The eastern docks would look good on you."

"I'll think about it."

They left, three of them moving through the crowd like sharks. The tension in the room didn't dissipate. It lingered, clinging to the air like smoke.

Matteo turned to her, and his hand closed around her wrist. "Come with me."

He didn't wait for an answer. He pulled her through the crowd, past the bar, past the private booths, to a narrow hallway that led to the back offices. But he didn't stop at his office. He kept going, pushing open a door that led to a small alcove near the club's emergency exit.

The door clicked shut behind them, and the noise of the club faded to a dull roar.

"What the hell were you thinking?" His voice was low, rough, his hand still wrapped around her wrist.

"I was just—"

"You were eavesdropping. You were putting yourself in the middle of something that could get you killed."

"I wanted to help."

"Help?" He laughed, but there was no humor in it. "You don't help by putting yourself in their line of sight. Sal's the kind of man who collects leverage. And right now, you're mine, which makes you leverage."

Yours. The word echoed in her chest. "You claimed me."

"I had to." His grip softened, his thumb tracing circles on her wrist. "It was the only way to keep him from pushing."

"But you said I'm yours."

He looked at her, really looked at her, and something shifted in his gaze. "You are."

The admission hit her like a wave. She should have been angry. She should have protested. She was a journalist, an undercover agent, a woman with her own agenda. But the word settled into her bones like a truth she hadn't known she was waiting for.

"He was going to take me," she whispered. "If you hadn't stopped him."

"I would never let that happen."

"But you put yourself at risk. You made yourself a target."

"I made you a target too." His hand moved to her face, cupping her cheek. "Which means I have to keep you close. I have to make sure everyone knows exactly who you belong to."

Her breath caught. "Matteo..."

"Do you trust me?"

The question hung between them. Trust. It was the one thing she couldn't afford to give him. Not when she was still hiding her true purpose. Not when she was still reporting to Kline.

But her body answered before her mind could. She nodded.

"Then let me show you what that means."

He pressed her against the wall, and the cold brick bit through the thin fabric of her costume. His body covered hers, hard and warm, and she felt the evidence of his desire pressing against her hip.

"They're still out there," he murmured against her ear. "Sal and his men. They're watching. They're waiting to see if I'm bluffing."

"Are you?"

"Never."

His mouth found her neck, and she gasped as his teeth grazed her skin. He sucked hard, marking her, and she felt the sting of it, the possessive claim that would bloom into a bruise by morning.

"Everyone will see this," he said, his voice rough. "Everyone will know you're mine."

She should have protested. She should have pushed him away. But the danger of it, the risk of being caught, the thrill of being claimed in a place where anyone could walk in, sent a rush of heat through her body.

"Matteo..."

"Say it." His hand slid down her body, gripping her hip. "Say you're mine."

"I'm yours."

The words tasted like surrender. Like freedom.

He kissed her then, hard and demanding, his tongue sweeping into her mouth as his hand moved between her legs. She was already wet, already aching for him, and he groaned against her lips when he felt it.

"You want this," he said. "You want to be claimed in front of all of them."

"Yes."

He pushed aside the thin fabric of her costume, and his fingers found her slick heat. She whimpered, her head falling back against the wall as he worked her slowly, deliberately, drawing out every sensation.

"They're out there," he whispered, his fingers circling her clit. "Drinking, talking, watching the door. Wondering what we're doing in here."

She couldn't speak. Couldn't think. His touch was too much, too good, too overwhelming.

"I want them to know," he continued, his voice a low growl. "I want them to hear you."

He pushed a finger inside her, then two, and she cried out, the sound swallowed by the bass of the club. His thumb pressed against her clit, and she felt herself climbing, climbing, the edge of release just within reach.

"Come for me," he commanded. "Let them hear who you belong to."

She shattered. Her body convulsed against his hand, and she bit her lip to stifle the scream, but a moan escaped anyway, loud and raw and undeniable.

He held her through it, his lips pressed to her forehead, his hand gentle as she came down. When she opened her eyes, he was watching her with something that looked almost like reverence.

"Mine," he said again, and this time it wasn't a claim. It was a promise.

She should have felt trapped. She should have felt compromised. But all she felt was the thrill of danger, the heat of his body, and the terrifying realization that she didn't want to be anywhere else.

He straightened her costume, his fingers lingering on the mark he'd left on her neck. "Stay close tonight. No more eavesdropping."

"And tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow, we figure out what to do about Sal."

He opened the door, and the noise of the club rushed back in. She followed him into the light, feeling the weight of eyes on her, feeling the brand of his claim on her skin.

She was his. And for the first time since she'd walked into this club, she wasn't sure if that was a problem or a salvation.

Undercover Heat

Morning light cut through the cheap blinds of my studio apartment like a blade. I winced as I sat up, the sheets falling away to reveal the dark marks scattered across my thighs and collarbone. Matteo's marks. Evidence of a night that had shattered every boundary I'd carefully constructed.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. I knew that ringtone. Agent Kline. The sound dragged me back to reality with brutal efficiency.

I answered, my voice rough from sleep. "Yeah."

"You've been in that club for a week, Helman." Kline's voice was clipped, impatient. "I need something concrete. What've you got?"

I rubbed my temples, the phantom sensation of Matteo's hands still burning on my skin. "I'm building trust. These things take time."

"Time's a luxury we don't have. The syndicate is moving product through that club. I need names, dates, shipment schedules."

"The club's clean on the surface. I'm working on getting deeper access."

"Work faster." Kline's tone hardened. "I'm giving you forty-eight hours. If you don't have something actionable by then, I'm pulling you out."

Panic lanced through me. "You can't do that. I'm close to something."

"You're close to getting compromised. I've seen that look before, Helman. Don't forget why you're there."

The line went dead. I stared at the phone, my reflection staring back from the dark screen. Why was I there? The answer used to be simple. Justice. A story. Exposure. Now the lines blurred every time I thought of Matteo's hands, his mouth, the way he looked at me like I was the only woman in the world.

I showered and dressed with mechanical efficiency, my mind churning. Forty-eight hours. I needed something that would satisfy Kline without betraying Matteo completely. The thought made me pause. Since when did I care about protecting a mafia capo?

Since he'd pressed me against a wall and made me forget my own name.

The club was quiet when I arrived for my shift. Tony gave me a nod from the bar, his eyes tracking me with that same knowing look he'd worn the night before. I ignored him and headed for the back offices, my heels clicking against the polished concrete.

Matteo's door was open. He sat behind his desk, a glass of amber liquid in his hand, his dark eyes fixed on me the moment I appeared. The air in the room changed, thickening with something electric and dangerous.

"Close the door." His voice was low, controlled. A command.

I obeyed, the latch clicking shut behind me. "Good morning."

"Is it?" He set down his glass and stood, circling the desk with the slow, predatory grace that made my knees weak. "I saw you in the alley this morning. Taking a call."

My heart stuttered. "I was checking in with my sister."

"Your sister." He stopped inches from me, close enough that I could smell his cologne, the faint trace of whiskey on his breath. "The one who lives in Ohio? The one you haven't spoken to in six months according to your phone records?"

The world tilted. "You checked my phone records?"

"I check everything, tesoro." His hand came up, fingers brushing my jaw with deceptive gentleness. "You think I let strangers into my club without knowing who they are?"

"I told you who I am."

"You told me a name." His eyes hardened. "Larina Helman. Freelance journalist. No bylines in six months. No recent work history. You show up at my club with a dancer's body and a journalist's eyes, and you expect me to believe you're just looking for a fresh start?"

The accusation hung between us like a blade. I could lie again, dig myself deeper. But something in his gaze told me he already knew the truth. Or enough of it.

"I came here with a purpose," I said, my voice steady despite the trembling in my hands. "I wanted to see what really happens in places like this. The power, the money, the secrets."

"And now?"

"Now I don't know what I want anymore."

His thumb traced my lower lip, the touch sending sparks through my entire body. "You're a terrible liar, Larina. But I find myself not caring as much as I should."

"I'm not lying about how I feel." The words came out raw, honest. "That's real. Whatever this is between us, it's real."

Something flickered in his eyes. Anger. Desire. Need. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the hidden door behind his desk, the one that led to his private apartment upstairs.

"We're going to settle this," he said, his voice rough. "Right now."

The apartment was sleek and masculine, all dark wood and leather and the scent of him. He didn't give me time to look around. He backed me against the wall, his body pressing into mine, his mouth claiming my throat with a ferocity that stole my breath.

"You want to know my secrets?" he growled against my skin. "I'll show you secrets. But you don't get to keep yours. Not from me."

I moaned as his teeth grazed my pulse point. "Matteo."

"Say my name again. Say it like you mean it."

"Matteo." It came out a plea, a prayer.

He pulled back, his eyes dark and hungry. "Tell me you're mine. Right now. Tell me, and I'll give you everything."

The words caught in my throat. If I said them, there was no going back. No mission. No story. No escape. Just him.

"I'm yours." The confession tore out of me, desperate and true. "I'm yours, Matteo."

He kissed me then, deep and demanding, his tongue sweeping into my mouth like he was claiming territory. I melted into him, my fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer. His hands found the zipper of my dress and dragged it down, the fabric pooling at my feet.

"You're so beautiful," he murmured against my lips. "Every time I see you, it hurts."

I reached for his belt, my fingers clumsy with need. He caught my wrists and pinned them above my head, his grip firm but not painful.

"Not yet. I want to taste you first."

He dropped to his knees, his hands gripping my hips as he pressed his mouth to my stomach, my navel, the sensitive skin just above the waistband of my panties. I gasped as he hooked his fingers into the lace and pulled them down, his breath hot against my thigh.

"Matteo, please."

"Please what?" He looked up at me, his eyes gleaming. "Tell me what you want."

"You. I want you."

He smiled, a wicked, devastating thing. "You have me, tesoro. You have all of me."

His mouth found my center, and I cried out, my head falling back against the wall. He was relentless, his tongue stroking and circling, his fingers digging into my hips to hold me steady as my knees buckled. The pleasure built like a wave, cresting higher and higher until I shattered, my cries echoing through the room.

He rose, his lips wet, his eyes burning. "That's just the beginning."

He lifted me as if I weighed nothing and carried me to the bedroom, laying me on the massive bed with surprising gentleness. Then he stood, his hands working his belt, his shirt, his pants, until he stood before me in all his glory. Hard. Ready. Mine.

"Look at me," he commanded. "I want you to see exactly who's taking you."

I watched as he crawled onto the bed, his body covering mine, the heat of his skin searing into me. He positioned himself at my entrance, teasing, waiting.

"Say it again."

"I'm yours."

He pushed inside me in one smooth motion, and I gasped at the fullness, the stretch, the perfect pressure. He paused, giving me time to adjust, his forehead pressed to mine.

"You feel like heaven," he breathed. "Like you were made for me."

I wrapped my legs around his waist, pulling him deeper. "Show me."

He did. He moved with a rhythm that was both punishing and reverent, each thrust driving me higher, closer to the edge. I clung to him, my nails raking down his back, my moans mixing with his growls. The world narrowed to the point where our bodies joined, to the heat and the sweat and the desperate need to be closer.

"Come for me," he ordered, his voice strained. "Come for me, Larina."

I shattered again, my climax ripping through me with a force that left me breathless. He followed moments later, his body tensing, his cry muffled against my shoulder.

We lay tangled together, our breathing ragged, our skin slick with sweat. He traced lazy patterns on my hip, his touch gentle now, almost tender.

"I still don't trust you," he said quietly. "But I can't stay away from you either."

I closed my eyes, the weight of his words settling over me. He didn't trust me, and he shouldn't. I was still hiding things, still holding back. But in that moment, lying in his arms, I didn't care about the mission or the story or the forty-eight hours Kline had given me.

All I cared about was the man who held me like I was precious, even as he suspected the worst of me.

He kissed my forehead and rolled away, reaching for his phone on the nightstand. I watched him, the play of muscles across his back, the casual confidence in every movement. He was dangerous. He was impossible. And I was falling for him harder with every passing second.

When he turned back, his eyes met mine. "You're staying tonight."

It wasn't a question. I didn't argue.

Shared Secrets

The office smelled of leather and old paper, a scent that had become familiar over the past few weeks. Larina sat across from Matteo at his desk, a stack of ledgers spread between them like a confession.

"You want me to look at the books?" She kept her tone neutral, though her heart hammered against her ribs. This was what Agent Kline wanted. This was the intel he kept demanding.

Matteo leaned back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest. The movement pulled his shirt tight across his shoulders, and she forced herself to focus on his face instead of the way the fabric stretched.

"You've got a sharp eye, Lena." He used her stage name, though something flickered in his gaze when he said it. "Tony handles most of the numbers, but I want someone I trust looking them over too."

Trust. The word settled in her chest like a stone. He trusted her. And she was here to destroy him.

"What exactly am I looking for?" She picked up a pen, clicking it open.

"Discrepancies. Anything that doesn't add up." He slid a ledger toward her. "We've had some deliveries that don't match the invoices. Could be nothing. Could be someone skimming."

She pulled the ledger closer, scanning the columns of numbers. Her journalistic training kicked in, and she started making mental notes. Dates that seemed off. Amounts that didn't correlate. Names she didn't recognize scattered through the pages.

"This one." She pointed to an entry. "The delivery date doesn't match the invoice number sequence. If they're sequential, this one should have come two weeks earlier."

Matteo leaned forward, his brow furrowed. He studied the page, then looked up at her with something like respect in his eyes.

"I've been staring at these for three days and didn't catch that."

She shrugged, trying to hide her pleasure at his approval. "I'm good with patterns."

"You're good with a lot of things." His tone dropped, and the air between them thickened.

She looked down at the ledger, her cheeks warming. "Should I keep going?"

"Yeah." He stood, coming around the desk to stand behind her. His hand landed on her shoulder, warm and heavy. "Show me what else you find."

For the next hour, they worked together. She pointed out inconsistencies, and he explained the club's operations. How deliveries worked. Which suppliers were legitimate and which were fronts. The rhythm of the business that ran beneath the surface.

"This shipment," she said, tapping a page. "It's marked as liquor, but the quantity doesn't match the storage records."

Matteo's hand stilled on her shoulder. "You checked the storage records?"

"Tony showed me the inventory system yesterday. I was curious."

He was quiet for a moment, and she held her breath. Had she said too much? Shown too much interest?

"You're full of surprises, Lena." A warmth in his words made her stomach flip. "Most dancers don't care about inventory."

"Most dancers aren't sleeping with the boss."

He laughed, a low sound that vibrated through her. "Fair point."

She turned in her chair to face him. "Why are you really showing me this, Matteo?"

He studied her, his dark eyes unreadable. "Because I want to see if you can handle it."

"Handle what?"

"The truth." He crouched down beside her chair, bringing them to eye level. "There's more to this club than dancing and drinks. You know that. I know you know that."

Her pulse raced. This was the moment. The opening she'd been waiting for. But instead of pressing for information, she found herself asking a different question.

"Why do you trust me?"

He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. His fingers lingered on her cheek.

"Because you look at me like I matter. Not like a mark. Not like a story. Like a man."

The words hit her harder than they should have. Because he was right. Somewhere along the way, he'd stopped being just an assignment. He'd become something else. Something dangerous.

"I do matter to you?" The question came out soft, almost vulnerable.

She swallowed. "You know you do."

He stood, pulling her up with him. His hands settled on her hips, drawing her close.

"Then show me."

The request was simple, but the weight behind it was immense. He wasn't asking for sex. He was asking for proof. For her to choose him over whatever else she was hiding.

She could have pulled away. Could have made an excuse. But instead, she reached up and unbuttoned his shirt.

His breath caught as her fingers worked the buttons, one by one. When she reached the last one, she pushed the fabric aside, revealing the planes of his chest. She traced a finger down his sternum, feeling the heat of his skin, the way his muscles tensed beneath her touch.

"My turn to be in charge tonight." She kept her voice steady, though her heart was pounding.

His eyebrows rose. "Is that so?"

"That's so." She pushed him back until he hit the desk. "Sit."

He complied, settling on the edge of the desk with his legs spread. She stepped between them, her hands on his shoulders.

"You've been running things since we met. Showing me what you want. How you want it." She leaned in, her lips brushing his ear. "Now it's my turn."

His hands came up to her waist, but she caught his wrists.

"Hands on the desk."

A flicker of surprise crossed his face, followed by something darker. Heat. He placed his palms flat on the desk behind him.

"Good boy."

The words came out before she could stop them, and she felt him tense beneath her. For a moment, she worried she'd pushed too far. But then his eyes darkened, and he spoke rough and low.

"Keep going."

She dropped to her knees in front of him.

The position felt different from before. Earlier, when he'd had her on her knees, it had been about his dominance. His control. Now, she was the one choosing this. The one in control.

She reached for his belt, working the buckle loose with steady hands. His breath came faster as she pulled his pants down, freeing him. He was already hard, thick and heavy in her hand as she wrapped her fingers around him. She stroked him slowly, feeling the silk of his skin, the way he pulsed against her palm.

"Look at me," she commanded.

He did, his dark eyes locked on hers. She held his gaze as she leaned forward, running her tongue along the length of him before taking him into her mouth. The taste was salt and heat, and she savored it as she swirled her tongue around the tip.

His groan was low and rough, his hips twitching upward. She pressed them back down with one hand, keeping him still. She kept her eyes on his, watching his control slip as she worked him with her tongue. She took him deeper, inch by inch, feeling him hit the back of her throat. His head fell back, a curse escaping his lips.

"Hands," she reminded him.

He placed them back on the desk, his knuckles white with the effort of restraint.

She took her time, exploring him with her mouth and hands. Learning what made him gasp when she traced the sensitive underside. What made him moan when she hummed around him. What made him say her name like a prayer when she took him to the root and swallowed.

His thighs trembled beneath her hands. She could feel him getting close, the way his cock thickened further, the tension coiling in his body. But she wasn't ready for this to end yet.

When she pulled away, he was breathing hard, his chest heaving. A fine sheen of sweat glistened on his skin.

"Stand up," she said.

He obeyed, and she guided him to turn around, bending him over the desk. The ledgers crinkled beneath his weight. She pressed herself against his back, her lips tracing the line of his spine.

"You're going to let me take what I want."

It wasn't a question. He nodded, his voice rough. "Yes."

She reached around him, taking him in her hand and stroking him slowly. Then she guided herself against him, positioning him at her entrance. She was wet, ready, had been since the moment she'd unbuttoned his shirt. She sank down onto him slowly, savoring the gasp that escaped his lips as she took him in. The angle was different like this. Deeper. She set a slow rhythm, her hands gripping his hips.

"You feel that?" She leaned over him, her lips against his ear. "That's me taking control."

"Larina." Her real name slipped out, and she froze.

He knew. He'd known all along.

But instead of fear, she felt relief. A weight lifting from her shoulders.

"Say it again." Her voice cracked.

"Larina." He turned his head, meeting her eyes. "I've known since the second week."

"And you didn't stop me?"

"I didn't want to stop you."

She moved against him, the rhythm picking up. Her hips rolled, taking him deeper with each thrust. The confession hung between them, changing everything. She felt the climax building inside her, a slow burn that spread through her core.

"I'm not going to hurt you." His voice was strained. "Whatever you came here for, I'm not going to let anyone hurt you."

"I know." And she did. Somehow, impossibly, she trusted him.

She drove them both toward release, the pace frantic now. Her fingers dug into his hips as she rode him harder. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the office, obscene and beautiful. When she came, she cried out his name, her walls clenching around him as waves of pleasure crashed through her. He followed moments later, his body shuddering beneath hers as he spilled himself inside her.

They stayed like that for a long moment, breathing hard. Then she pulled away, turning him to face her.

"I'm a journalist."

He nodded, his expression unreadable.

"I was sent here to expose your operation."

"I know."

"But I can't do it." The words came out in a rush. "I can't hurt you. I won't."

He pulled her into his arms, holding her close. His voice was soft against her hair.

"I know, Larina. I know."

They stood there, wrapped in each other, the truth finally out. And instead of destroying them, it brought them closer.

"What happens now?" she whispered.

"Now?" He pulled back, looking down at her with a smile that made her heart ache. "Now we figure out who's been skimming from the club."

She laughed, the sound surprising her. "That's your priority?"

"The club's my life. But you." He cupped her face in his hands. "You're my future."

She kissed him, soft and sweet. When she pulled back, she was smiling.

"Then let's get to work."

He led her back to the chair, pulling her into his lap. Together, they went through the ledgers, her head resting against his chest. The numbers blurred, but the warmth of his body kept her grounded.

She'd come here to destroy him. Instead, she'd found something she never expected.

A home.

And she'd burn the whole world before she let anyone take it away.

Raid Crisis

The club hummed with its usual late-night energy, bass vibrating through the floor as Larina leaned over Matteo's desk, reviewing the inventory logs he had placed in front of her. His palm rested on her lower back, a casual possessive touch that had become second nature over the past week. She felt the warmth of it through the thin silk of her dress, grounding her in the strange reality of their arrangement.

"You're getting good at this," he murmured, his voice low and approving as she pointed out a discrepancy in the liquor shipments. "Most people don't catch that until their third month."

She glanced up at him, a small smile playing on her lips. "I pay attention."

His eyes darkened with something warmer than approval. "I've noticed."

The intercom on his desk buzzed, breaking the moment. Tony's voice crackled through, strained and urgent. "Matteo. We got company. Unmarked cars, three of them. They're surrounding the block."

Matteo's expression shifted instantly, the relaxed lover replaced by the calculating capo. He pressed the intercom button. "How long?"

"Two minutes, maybe less. They're moving fast."

"Get everyone calm. No resistance. You know the drill." He released the button and turned to Larina, his fingers finding hers. "Come on."

Her heart slammed against her ribs. "What's happening?"

"Police raid. Could be local, could be federal. Either way, you're not here when they come through that door." He moved to the wall behind his desk, running his fingers along the ornate wooden paneling until he found a nearly invisible seam. He pressed it, and a section of the wall swung inward with a soft click, revealing a narrow dark space beyond.

"A panic room?" she breathed.

"Soundproof, off every blueprint, no record of its existence. Get in."

Shouts erupted from the main floor below, muffled by the office walls but growing louder. The crash of furniture being overturned. The bark of commands. Larina's legs trembled, but she stepped into the darkness. Matteo followed, pulling the panel closed behind them. The latch engaged with a soft thud, plunging them into absolute blackness.

She couldn't see her own hand in front of her face. The space was small, barely six feet square, and the ceiling sloped so low Matteo had to hunch slightly. She could feel him beside her, his body radiating heat, his breath warm against her cheek. The air was stale but clean, and she realized the room must have been ventilated.

Through the walls, the sounds of the raid filtered in, distorted but unmistakable. Heavy footsteps. Shouted orders. The splintering of wood. Larina pressed herself against Matteo, her fingers digging into his arms. Her mind raced with possibilities. What if they found the room? What if they had a warrant for it? What if her cover was blown and Agent Kline had sold her out?

"Breathe," Matteo whispered, his lips brushing her ear. "Slow and quiet. They won't find us."

"How can you be sure?" Her voice shook despite her efforts to steady it.

"Because I built this place for exactly this reason. Every cop in Brooklyn could be upstairs and they'd never know this room exists." His palm found her face in the dark, cupping her cheek. His thumb traced her jawline, a gentle reassurance. "But you need to stay calm. Can you do that for me?"

She nodded, then realized he couldn't see her. "Yes."

"Good girl."

They stood in silence, the minutes stretching like hours. The raid continued above them, voices rising and falling, the occasional thud of something heavy being dropped. Larina's body trembled with adrenaline, her pulse a wild drum in her ears. She hated the feeling of helplessness, of being trapped in the dark waiting for discovery.

Matteo pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her. His heart beat strong and steady against her cheek, a counterpoint to her own frantic rhythm. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I've got you. Nothing's going to happen to you."

"I'm not scared for myself," she whispered, and realized it was true. She was scared for him. Scared of what would happen if the police found evidence. Scared of the life she had been sent to destroy. Scared of the feelings she could no longer deny.

His arms tightened around her. "I know, baby. I know."

Something shifted in the darkness between them. The fear that had gripped her transformed into something else, something hotter and more urgent. She needed to feel him, to prove to herself that they were still alive, still together, still safe. Her hands slid up his chest, finding the collar of his shirt, pulling his mouth down to hers.

The kiss was desperate, hungry, nothing like the controlled seductions of their previous encounters. She tasted fear on his lips, and something else. Something raw and unguarded. He responded with equal urgency, his grip tightening on her hips, pulling her flush against him.

"Larina," he breathed against her mouth, his voice rough. "We should wait. Until this is over."

"I can't wait." She tugged at his belt, her fingers clumsy in the dark. "I need you now. I need to feel you."

He groaned, his resistance crumbling. His fingers found the zipper of her dress, pulling it down with practiced ease. The fabric slid from her shoulders, pooling at her feet. Cool air kissed her skin, but his palms were hot, tracing the curve of her waist, the swell of her hips.

They moved together in the darkness, guided by touch and sound. She pushed his jacket from his shoulders, unbuttoned his shirt, pressed her palms to the warm skin of his chest. His breath hitched as her fingers found his belt buckle, working it open with trembling hands.

"You're shaking," he murmured into her hair, his lips tracing a path down her temple.

"I told you. I'm not scared."

"I know what you are." His voice dropped lower, a rumble she felt in her chest. "You're mine."

The words sent a shiver through her that had nothing to do with fear. She freed him from his pants, her fingers wrapping around his length, feeling him hot and hard in her grip. He sucked in a breath, his forehead dropping to her shoulder.

"Christ, Larina."

She stroked him slowly, learning him by touch in the absolute darkness. The weight of him in her palm. The silk of his skin over steel. The way his hips jerked when she circled her thumb over the tip, finding the moisture already gathering there. He was breathing hard now, his control slipping with every movement of her hand.

His fingers found the edge of her panties, tugging the fabric aside. He groaned when he felt how ready she was, sliding one finger through her slickness, then two. She bit down on her lip to muffle the sound that escaped her, her grip on him tightening reflexively.

"You're so wet," he whispered against her ear, his breath hot and uneven. "Is that all for me?"

"You know it is."

He pulled her hand away from him, pressing her palms flat against the wall behind her. The surface was cool and smooth, a contrast to the heat of his body. He knelt in the darkness, and she felt his breath on her inner thigh a moment before his mouth found her.

She clapped a hand over her own lips to keep from crying out. His tongue was slow and deliberate, tracing through her folds with a patience that contradicted the urgency of their situation. Above them, the raid continued, footsteps and voices filtering through the walls, but here in the dark, there was only the wet heat of his mouth and the trembling of her knees.

He circled her clit with devastating precision, then sucked gently, and her head fell back against the wall. Her free hand found his hair, gripping tight, holding him exactly where she needed him. He groaned against her, the vibration traveling through her core, and slipped two fingers inside her, curling them in a rhythm that matched the stroke of his tongue.

"Matteo," she breathed against her palm, barely audible. "I can't. I'm going to."

He pulled away before she could fall over the edge, rising to his feet. She heard the rustle of fabric, felt him roll a condom on in the dark. Then he lifted her, and she wrapped her legs around his waist, her back pressed to the wall. The cool surface against her bare shoulders made her gasp, but the heat of him between her thighs was overwhelming.

He positioned himself at her entrance, pausing there, letting her feel the promise of what was coming. She dug her heels into his lower back, trying to pull him closer, but he held still.

"Tell me you want this," he said, his voice barely a whisper, his lips against her throat.

"I want this. I want you. Please."

He pushed inside her in one long, slow stroke, filling her completely. She bit down on his shoulder to keep from screaming, her body stretching to accommodate him. He held still for a moment, letting her adjust, his breath ragged against her neck.

"You feel so good," he groaned. "So fucking good."

He began to move, withdrawing almost entirely before sliding back in. Each thrust was deep and deliberate, a claim staked in the darkness. She met him with equal intensity, her hips rolling against his, taking him as deep as she could. The sounds of their bodies meeting was obscene in the silence of the hidden room, slick skin and ragged breathing and the soft, wet sounds of pleasure.

There was no teasing this time, no slow build. They moved together with a frantic rhythm, driven by the adrenaline still coursing through their veins. Each thrust was a declaration, a defiance of the danger that surrounded them. She bit her lip to keep from crying out, her nails raking down his back, leaving marks he would feel for days.

"Look at me," he whispered, his forehead pressed against hers. "I can't see you, but I know you're there. I need to know you're with me."

"I'm here," she breathed, her voice breaking. "I'm right here."

His hips drove into her, harder, faster, and she met him with equal intensity. The pleasure built like a wave, cresting, threatening to break. She felt him shudder, felt his control slip, and it pushed her over the edge. She came with a silent cry, her body clenching around him, pulling him with her.

He followed moments later, his release a low groan pressed into her neck. His hips stuttered, losing their rhythm, and she felt the pulse of him inside her as he spilled himself into the condom. They stayed like that, tangled together, breathing hard, the fear momentarily forgotten.

Minutes passed. The sounds above began to fade, doors slamming, engines starting. The raid was ending. Matteo lowered her gently to the floor, his palms steadying her as her legs wobbled. He found her dress in the dark, helped her back into it, his touch lingering on her skin.

She heard him fixing his own clothes, the click of his belt buckle, the rustle of his shirt. In the darkness, she reached for him, finding his chest, pressing her palm flat against his heartbeat. It was still racing.

A coded knock came from the other side of the panel. Three quick taps, a pause, then two more. Tony's signal.

Matteo pressed his forehead to hers. "It's clear."

"I know." She didn't want to leave the darkness. In here, they were just two people holding each other. Out there, they were a capo and a journalist, a criminal and a traitor.

He seemed to sense her hesitation. His fingers found hers in the dark, squeezing gently. "Whatever happens next, we face it together. You understand?"

She squeezed back, her throat tight with emotion. "Together."

He pressed the latch, and the panel swung open, spilling them back into the office. The room was destroyed. Papers scattered, furniture overturned, the desk drawers pulled out and dumped. But the hidden panel was seamless, betraying nothing.

Tony stood in the doorway, his face grim. "They took the computers. The financial records. A few guys for questioning, but they'll be out by morning."

Matteo nodded, his composure fully restored. "Damage assessment in an hour. Get the lawyers on retainer. We'll handle this."

Tony glanced at Larina, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes, then turned and left.

Matteo turned to her, his expression softening. He cupped her face in his hands, studying her as if seeing her for the first time. "You're shaking."

"I'm fine." She wasn't, but she didn't know how to explain what she felt. The fear and desire and the terrifying realization that she was falling for a man she had been sent to destroy.

He pulled her into his arms, holding her close. "We're okay. That's what matters."

She buried her face in his chest, breathing in his scent, letting his warmth chase away the chill of fear. But in the back of her mind, a voice whispered the truth she couldn't escape. She had crossed a line tonight, not just of duty but of self-preservation. She was no longer an undercover agent gathering intel. She was a woman in love with her mark, and that love would either save them both or destroy everything.

For now, she chose to believe in the man holding her. She chose to believe in the future they might build together, if they survived the war that was surely coming.

And in the darkness of the club, with the scent of smoke and fear still lingering in the air, she held on to him and hoped.

Truth and Trust

The penthouse felt different in the aftermath. City lights glittered through floor-to-ceiling windows, but Larina saw nothing beyond the weight pressing on her chest. She sat on the edge of Matteo's bed, still wearing his shirt from the night before. The fabric carried his scent: sandalwood and smoke, something darker underneath.

Matteo stood at the window with his back to her. His shoulders were tense beneath the black t-shirt he'd pulled on after the raid. The near-miss had shaken him, not the police themselves but the vulnerability of nearly being caught with her.

"You're quiet," he said without turning. "That's not like you."

Larina's throat tightened. She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times in her head. Every scenario ended with him walking away. But she couldn't keep the lie alive. Not after last night. Not after he'd held her like she was the only thing worth protecting.

"I need to tell you something." Her voice came out smaller than she intended.

Matteo turned slowly. His dark eyes searched her face, reading the tension in her jaw, the way her fingers twisted in the sheets. "I'm listening."

She stood. Her legs felt unsteady beneath her. "I'm not who you think I am."

A long pause stretched between them. He didn't move, didn't speak. The air thickened.

"My name is Larina Helman. I'm a journalist." The words tumbled out before she could stop them. "I came to the club to investigate the syndicate. I was working with the FBI. Agent Kline was my handler."

Matteo's expression didn't change. That was worse than anger. He stood perfectly still, a predator assessing a threat.

"How long?" His voice was flat.

"From the beginning. The audition, the first night. All of it." She forced herself to meet his gaze. "But not us. That was real. I didn't plan for you."

"You expect me to believe that?" He took a step toward her. "You expect me to believe anything you say?"

"I expect you to be furious. I expect you to throw me out." She swallowed hard. "But I couldn't keep lying. Not after last night. Not after everything."

He moved closer, stopping inches from her. His hand came up, fingers brushing her jaw. The touch was gentle, but his eyes burned. "I knew."

Larina's breath caught. "What?"

"The first time I saw you, I knew you were hiding something." His thumb traced her lower lip. "I had you investigated before your second shift. Your apartment, your phone records, your so-called job at the magazine."

"Then why didn't you..."

"Because I wanted to see how far you'd go." His hand dropped to her shoulder, sliding the shirt fabric aside. "Because I wanted to know if you'd eventually tell me the truth."

"You've known this whole time?" Her heart pounded so hard she felt dizzy.

"Every moment." He stepped closer, his body heat seeping through the thin cotton. "Every touch, every sound you made. I knew you had another agenda. But I also knew the way you looked at me couldn't be faked."

Larina's eyes burned. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Don't apologize." His voice dropped, rough and low. "Apologize for lying, not for feeling."

She reached up, her hand pressing against his chest. His heart beat steady and strong beneath her palm. "What happens now?"

"That depends on you." He caught her wrist, his grip firm but not painful. "Are you still working for them?"

"No. I ended it. After the raid, I told Kline I was done."

"And your investigation?"

"Finished." She shook her head. "There's nothing to expose. Not anymore. Not after I know you."

Matteo studied her for a long moment. The silence stretched, filled with everything unspoken. Then he pulled her against him, his arms wrapping around her waist.

"I should hate you," he murmured against her hair. "I should have you silenced and buried where no one would find you."

"Why don't you?"

He pulled back, cupping her face in both hands. "Because I see myself in you. The hunger, the need to uncover truth. You came here with a purpose, and you followed it. That takes courage."

"Courage or stupidity."

"Both." He almost smiled. "But I've done worse for less noble reasons."

Larina's hands slid up his arms, gripping his shoulders. "I don't deserve your forgiveness."

"Maybe not. But I'm giving it anyway." His forehead pressed against hers. "On one condition."

"Anything."

"No more secrets. No more lies. If you want to be with me, you're all in. No running back to the FBI, no second thoughts. You choose me, and you choose this life."

She didn't hesitate. "I choose you."

His mouth claimed hers, deep and consuming. But this kiss was different. It wasn't about possession or dominance. It was about claiming her truth, accepting her fully. His lips moved against hers with a tenderness that made her chest ache, his tongue sliding between her teeth to taste her slowly, thoroughly. She opened to him, her hands fisting in his shirt, pulling him closer until there was no space left between them.

He walked her backward until her knees hit the bed. She fell onto the mattress, pulling him down with her. He settled over her, his weight familiar and grounding.

"Slow," he whispered against her neck. "I want to feel every inch of you. I want to memorize the woman who was brave enough to tell me the truth."

His hands moved with deliberate patience, pushing the shirt up her thighs. His lips traced a path from her collarbone to her sternum, lingering over her racing heart. She could feel the heat of his breath against her skin, the scrape of his stubble, the careful way he touched her as if she might shatter.

"I was so afraid," she admitted, her voice breaking.

"I know." He kissed the hollow of her throat. "I felt it. Every time you looked at me, I felt your fear and your desire fighting each other."

"And now?"

"Now there's only desire." He lifted his head, meeting her eyes. "Only truth."

She reached for the hem of his shirt, pulling it up. He sat back, stripping it off, and she drank in the sight of him. The scars that mapped his history. The muscle carved by years of discipline. The power held in check, trembling beneath his skin.

"I want to see you," she said. "All of you."

He unbuttoned his jeans, sliding them off along with his boxers. His cock stood hard against his stomach, thick and flushed. But he didn't rush. He lay beside her, pulling her close.

They undressed each other slowly, piece by piece. Each garment removed felt like shedding a layer of pretense. When he slipped the shirt over her head, his gaze swept down her body with an intensity that made her skin prickle. His fingers unhooked her bra, sliding the straps down her arms, and her breasts spilled free. He cupped one, his thumb brushing her nipple until it peaked, then bent to take it in his mouth. She gasped at the wet heat, her fingers threading through his hair.

He hooked his thumbs into her panties, dragging them down her legs inch by inch. When they were skin to skin, nothing between them, Larina felt more exposed than she ever had on stage. More vulnerable. More real.

Matteo rolled her onto her back, propping himself on one elbow. His hand traced the curve of her hip, the dip of her waist, the swell of her breast. His palm slid lower, over the flat of her stomach, circling her navel before dipping between her thighs. She parted her legs for him, and his fingers found her slick and swollen.

"You're beautiful," he said. "But I knew that the first night. What I didn't know was how brave you'd be."

"I don't feel brave."

"Bravery isn't the absence of fear. It's acting despite it." He lowered his head, his mouth closing over her nipple.

Larina gasped, her back arching. His tongue circled slowly, deliberately, drawing out every sensation. His fingers stroked between her folds, spreading her wetness, teasing her entrance before sliding one finger inside. She clenched around him, her hips rising to meet his hand.

"Tell me what you want," he murmured against her skin.

"You. Inside me. Now."

"Not yet." He smiled against her stomach. "I want to taste you first."

He moved down her body, kissing a trail over her ribs, her belly, the sensitive skin of her inner thigh. His breath was hot against her, and she trembled in anticipation. When his mouth finally reached her center, she cried out. His tongue parted her folds, licking a long, slow stroke from her entrance to her clit. She grabbed the sheets, twisting the fabric in her fists as he worked her with devastating patience.

His tongue was slow, methodical, learning every response. He found the places that made her gasp and lingered there, circling her clit with just enough pressure to make her writhe. He slid a second finger inside her, curling them to hit the spot that made her see white. He built her up and then backed off, keeping her on the edge.

"Please," she begged.

"Please what?"

"Don't stop. Don't make me wait."

He lifted his head, his eyes dark and hungry, his lips glistening with her arousal. "I've been waiting for this since the moment I knew you were hiding something. The moment I realized I didn't care."

He moved up her body, positioning himself at her entrance. The broad head of his cock pressed against her, slick with precum, and she could feel her own wetness coating him. He paused, looking into her eyes.

"This is different," he said. "This is choosing each other without the games."

"Yes."

He pushed inside her slowly, inch by inch. Larina felt every millimeter, every stretch. He filled her completely, and she wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper until he was seated to the hilt. They both groaned at the fullness, the connection, the way her body yielded to accommodate him.

He moved with agonizing slowness, each thrust a declaration. His forehead pressed to hers, their breath mingling. She could feel every ridge of him inside her, the pulse of his heartbeat buried deep. He withdrew until only the tip remained, then sank back in with a controlled stroke that hit her cervix and made her whimper.

"I love you," she whispered.

The words hung between them, raw and unpolished. She hadn't planned to say them, but they felt right. True.

Matteo's rhythm faltered. His eyes searched hers, finding nothing but honesty.

"Say it again."

"I love you, Matteo."

He kissed her, deep and consuming, and his hips began to move faster. Not frantic, but purposeful. Each stroke pushed her higher, closer to the edge. She could hear the wet sounds of their bodies meeting, the slap of skin on skin, the ragged breaths torn from both of them.

"I love you too." The words came out broken, as if they cost him something to speak. "I love you, and I don't know what to do with it."

"Just feel it." She gripped his shoulders, her nails digging in. "Just feel me."

He reached between them, his fingers finding her clit, rubbing in tight circles as he thrust. The dual sensation was too much. The tension built, coiled in her belly, spreading through her limbs like fire. She was close, so close, and he knew it. He adjusted his angle, hitting the spot that made her see stars.

"Come for me," he said. "Come for me, and let me feel you."

She shattered, her body clenching around him in waves. The orgasm crashed through her, pulling a scream from her throat that she muffled against his shoulder. Her walls rippled and squeezed, and he followed moments later, his groan muffled against her neck. She felt him thicken inside her, then the hot rush of his release filling her in thick spurts. He ground his hips against hers, burying himself as deep as possible as he came.

They held each other through the aftershocks, trembling and spent. Afterward, he didn't pull away. He stayed inside her, his weight a comfort. His hand traced lazy patterns on her back.

"No more secrets?" he asked.

"No more secrets." She pressed a kiss to his shoulder. "I'm yours. All of me."

He rolled onto his side, taking her with him. They lay facing each other, legs tangled, hearts still racing. He was still half-hard inside her, and she could feel their combined wetness leaking onto the sheets.

"Tomorrow we figure out what this means," he said. "How to handle the FBI, how to keep you safe. But tonight, it's just us."

"Just us," she echoed.

She closed her eyes, feeling the truth of it settle into her bones. She had come to expose him, and instead she had exposed herself. And he had accepted her anyway.

That was the real revelation. Not the secrets she'd kept, but the trust she'd found. In his arms, she was finally free. Not from danger, but from the lie she'd been living.

And for now, that was enough.

Final Exposure

The club felt different that night. Larina knew it before she even stepped through the back entrance, before she saw Tony's tight expression or heard the hushed voices in the hallway. Something had shifted. The air itself seemed heavier, charged with a tension that had nothing to do with the usual Friday night crowd.

She found Matteo in his office, standing at the window with his back to her. The city lights painted his silhouette in cold blue and gold. He didn't turn when she entered, but she saw his shoulders relax, just slightly, at the sound of her footsteps.

"You're still here," he said. Not a question.

"I live here now, remember?" She crossed the room, letting her fingers brush against his arm. "What's wrong?"

He finally turned, and she saw it in his eyes. The thing she'd learned to recognize over these weeks. The predator's stillness that meant danger was circling.

"The Morellis are making a move." His voice was flat, controlled. "They've been picking off our shipments for the last three days. Small stuff, but deliberate. Testing."

Larina's journalistic instincts kicked in, cataloging details. The Morelli family had been a minor player for years, content with their piece of the borough. For them to move on Matteo's territory meant something had changed.

"Someone's feeding them information," she said. It wasn't a guess.

Matteo's jaw tightened. "Tony found a leak two hours ago. One of the lieutenants, Frankie. He's been passing schedules, shipment routes, personnel rotations."

"Where is he now?"

"Being persuasive with my cousin." A dark smile crossed his face. "He'll talk. They always do."

Larina moved closer, her body finding its way into his space with the ease of practiced intimacy. "But that's not all, is it?"

He looked at her then, really looked, and she saw something she'd never expected to see in those dark eyes. Uncertainty.

"The Morellis aren't working alone. Frankie gave up a name before he lost consciousness. Federal. Someone inside the Bureau has been coordinating with them."

The words hit her like ice water. The Bureau. Her handler. Agent Kline.

Matteo watched her reaction, and she knew he was reading every micro-expression, every flicker of her eyes. "You know something about this."

It wasn't an accusation. It was a statement, delivered with the careful precision of a man who already knew the answer but needed to hear her say it.

Larina's throat tightened. She thought of the weeks she'd spent here, the lines she'd crossed, the truths she'd buried. She thought of Kline's voice on the phone, demanding updates, pushing for intel. She thought of the way she'd fed him just enough to keep him satisfied while she fell deeper into Matteo's world.

"My handler," she said. The words felt like glass in her mouth. "Agent Kline. He's been pushing me for information since the beginning."

Matteo didn't move. Didn't react. Just watched her with that predator's stillness.

"I haven't given him anything real," she continued, her voice urgent now. "Nothing that could hurt you. I told him about the club, about the surface operations. But the real stuff, the shipments, the meetings, the contacts. I kept all of that."

"Why?"

The question was simple. Brutal. It demanded a truth she'd been avoiding for weeks.

"Because I fell in love with you." She said it without hesitation, without shame. "Because I stopped being a journalist the night I walked onto that stage and saw you watching me. Because I chose you, Matteo. I chose you over everything."

He crossed the distance between them in two strides. His hands found her face, cupping her jaw with a gentleness that belied his size. "I know."

"You know?"

"I've known for weeks." His thumb traced her cheekbone. "The night of the raid, when we were hiding in that closet. You could have called it in. You could have given them everything. But you didn't."

"You were watching me."

"I'm always watching you." He leaned in, his forehead resting against hers. "I needed to know if you'd break. If you'd choose them or me."

"And now?"

"Now I know you're mine." He pulled back, and she saw the fire in his eyes. "But we have a problem. If your handler is working with the Morellis, then this isn't just a territorial dispute. It's a setup. They want to take down my entire operation."

"Then we stop them." Larina's voice was steady, certain. "Together."

Matteo's eyebrows rose. "We?"

"You and me. Partners." She stepped back, crossing her arms. "I know how Kline operates. I know his patterns, his pressure points. And I know how to feed him information that sounds real but isn't."

"You want to bait him."

"I want to destroy him." The words came out cold, harder than she'd intended. "He used me. He sent me here to get close to you, to gather intel, to help take you down. But he didn't count on me falling for you. And now I'm going to use everything he taught me to burn his operation to the ground."

Matteo studied her for a long moment. She could see him weighing options, calculating risks. Then he smiled, slow and dangerous.

"That's my girl."

They worked through the night. Larina mapped out Kline's patterns, the way he liked to receive information, the codes they used, the dead drops. Matteo coordinated with Tony, setting up false shipments, fake routes, phantom meetings that would lead the Morellis and their federal partners into a trap.

By dawn, they had a plan. By noon, it was in motion.

Larina made the call from a burner phone, her voice trembling with manufactured fear. "Kline. Something's happening. Matteo's planning a major shipment tonight. I have the details."

"Tell me." His voice was sharp, hungry.

She fed him the information, every detail carefully crafted to lead the Morellis into an ambush. A warehouse in Red Hook. A shipment of weapons. A meeting with international contacts.

"Good work, Helman." Kline's approval was almost patronizing. "This will end him."

She hung up and looked at Matteo, who had been listening on the extension. His eyes were bright with satisfaction.

"You're sure about this?" he asked.

"I've never been more sure of anything."

He pulled her close, his mouth finding hers in a kiss that was equal parts possession and promise. When he pulled back, his voice was rough.

"When this is over, we need to talk about your future."

"My future is here." She said it without hesitation. "With you."

The warehouse was cold and dark when they arrived that night. Larina stood beside Matteo, watching through the grimy windows as cars pulled into the lot. Morelli's men first, then a sedan with government plates.

Kline stepped out, and Larina felt a surge of something that was almost pity. He had no idea. He thought he was closing in on his prize, but he was walking into a trap of his own making.

"Now," Matteo said.

The lights blazed on. Tony and his men emerged from the shadows, weapons raised. The Morellis froze, hands going up. Kline's face twisted with fury as he saw Larina standing beside Matteo.

"You betrayed me," he spat.

"No." Larina's voice was calm. "I chose the right side."

The confrontation was over in minutes. The Morellis were taken into custody, handed over to a federal agent Matteo had in his pocket. Kline was arrested for conspiracy, his career destroyed by evidence Larina had carefully collected over weeks.

As the police cars pulled away, Matteo turned to her. The tension bled out of his shoulders, replaced by something softer, warmer.

"It's done."

"It's just beginning." She stepped into his arms, feeling his heart beat against hers. "I meant what I said. I'm not going anywhere."

"Good." His hand found her chin, tilting her face up to meet his gaze. "Because I have plans for you, Larina Helman. Big plans."

"What kind of plans?"

"The kind that involve rings and ceremonies and a lifetime of waking up next to me." His thumb brushed across her lower lip. "If you'll have me."

She laughed, the sound bright and free in the cold night air. "Is that a proposal, Capo Stasli?"

"It's a promise." He kissed her, deep and slow, a seal on everything they'd built together. "But we can discuss the details at home."

They drove back to his penthouse in silence, hands intertwined. The city rushed past them, indifferent to the world that had changed in a single night. But Larina felt it. Felt the shift in her bones, the settling of something that felt like destiny.

She had come here to destroy him. She had stayed to love him. And now she would spend the rest of her life proving that love was worth more than any story she could have written.

When they stepped through the door, Matteo didn't waste time with words. He backed her against the wall, his mouth claiming hers with a hunger that made her knees weak. His hands gripped her hips, pulling her flush against him, and she could feel the hard length of him pressing into her stomach.

"I need you," he growled against her throat, his breath hot against her pulse. "I need to feel you, to know you're real."

"I'm real." She pulled at his jacket, shoving it off his shoulders. It hit the floor with a soft thump. "I'm here. I'm yours."

His mouth found the curve of her neck, teeth grazing the sensitive skin just below her ear. She gasped, her head falling back against the wall as his tongue traced a path down to her collarbone. His fingers found the zipper of her dress, pulling it down slowly, inch by inch, until the fabric pooled at her feet.

The cool air hit her skin, raising goosebumps across her bare flesh. She stood before him in nothing but a thin strip of black lace, her chest rising and falling with quickened breath. His eyes devoured her, dark and hungry, roaming over every curve with an intensity that made her burn.

"Beautiful," he murmured, his palm skimming up her ribcage, brushing the swell of her breast through the lace. "You have no idea what you do to me."

"Show me," she whispered.

He answered by lifting her, and she wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her through the penthouse. The city lights spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows, painting their bodies in silver and shadow as he moved. His mouth never left her skin, trailing kisses along her shoulder, her collarbone, the upper curve of her breast.

He laid her on the bed, his eyes never leaving hers as he shrugged out of his shirt. The hard planes of his chest caught the light, and she reached for him, running her palms over the warm skin, feeling the rapid beat of his heart beneath her fingers.

"You saved me tonight," he said, his voice low and rough.

"We saved each other." She pulled him down to her, her lips brushing against his. "Now stop talking and show me."

He did. His hands moved over her body with practiced efficiency, unclasping her bra and tossing it aside before his mouth followed the path his fingers had traced. He took one nipple between his lips, swirling his tongue around the tight peak while his hand cupped the other breast, thumb circling, teasing. She arched into him with a moan, her fingers tangling in his dark hair, pulling him closer.

He lavished attention on her breasts, alternating between them, sucking and nibbling until she was writhing beneath him. Then his mouth began to travel lower, pressing open-mouthed kisses down her stomach, his tongue dipping into her navel before continuing its descent. He hooked his fingers into the thin lace of her underwear and pulled it down her thighs, tossing it somewhere into the darkness.

"Matteo," she breathed, anticipation coiling tight in her belly.

He settled between her thighs, his broad shoulders pushing her legs apart. His breath was hot against her most sensitive flesh, and she trembled when he pressed a kiss to her inner thigh, then another, moving higher with agonizing slowness. When his mouth finally found her, she cried out, her hips lifting off the bed.

His tongue was slow and deliberate, tracing the slick folds of her sex before circling the swollen bud at her center. He worked her with patient expertise, alternating between long, slow strokes and quick, flickering touches that had her gasping his name. She could feel the pressure building inside her, a wave gathering strength, ready to break.

"That's it," he murmured against her, the vibration of his voice sending sparks through her nerve endings. "Let go for me."

She came apart with a shattered cry, her body clenching and trembling as the orgasm rolled through her in waves. He didn't stop, didn't let up, his mouth continuing its sweet torture until she was pushing at his shoulders, begging for mercy.

He kissed his way back up her body, his lips glistening with her arousal. "You taste like everything I've ever wanted."

She pulled him to her, tasting herself on his tongue as she kissed him deeply. Her hands found his belt, fumbling with the buckle until she freed him. He was thick and hard, hot against her palm as she stroked him, her thumb circling the sensitive head.

He groaned, his hips rocking into her hand. "If you keep doing that, this won't last long."

"Then don't let it last long," she teased, though her own voice was breathless with need. "We have the rest of our lives for slow."

He laughed against her mouth, a low, dark sound that sent shivers down her spine. Then he shifted, positioning himself between her legs, the blunt head of his cock pressing against her entrance. He paused, his eyes finding hers in the dim light.

"I love you," he said, and the words were a vow.

"I love you too." She wrapped her legs around his hips, pulling him toward her. "Now, Matteo. Please."

He entered her in one slow, deep thrust, filling her completely. She gasped at the fullness, at the way her body stretched to accommodate him, at the way he felt buried so deep inside her it was hard to tell where she ended and he began. He held still for a moment, his forehead pressed against hers, their breath mingling.

Then he began to move.

It was different from before. There was no desperation, no fear, no power struggle. There was only connection. Two people who had chosen each other, body and soul, in a world that wanted them apart. He moved inside her with slow, deliberate strokes, pulling almost all the way out before sinking deep again, each thrust a statement of ownership and devotion all at once.

She matched his rhythm, her hips rising to meet his, her hands sliding over the hard muscles of his back. The friction built between them, a slow burn that grew hotter with every movement. She could feel every inch of him, the way he filled her, the way her body clenched around him with each stroke.

"Harder," she whispered, and he obeyed, his pace quickening, his thrusts growing deeper, more urgent. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the room, obscene and beautiful. She dug her nails into his shoulders, holding on as the pressure inside her built toward something inevitable.

He shifted his angle slightly, and the change hit her exactly where she needed it. She cried out, her back arching off the bed, and he swallowed her moans with his mouth, kissing her deeply as he drove into her.

"Come for me," he growled against her lips. "I want to feel you come."

She shattered around him, her body clenching and pulsing as the orgasm crashed through her with an intensity that left her seeing stars. He followed her over the edge moments later, his own release tearing through him with a groan that sounded almost like pain. She felt him throb inside her, the heat of him spilling into her, and she held him close as the aftershocks rippled through them both.

They stayed like that for a long moment, still joined, hearts pounding against each other's chests. Then he rolled to the side, taking her with him so she was sprawled across his body, still connected, neither willing to break the contact just yet.

Afterward, they lay tangled together, her head on his chest, his hand stroking her hair. The silence was comfortable, filled with the quiet intimacy of two people who had nothing left to hide.

"What happens now?" she asked.

"Now we build something new." His voice was thoughtful. "I've been thinking about restructuring the family. Legitimate businesses, fewer risks. A future that doesn't depend on shadows."

"You'd do that?"

"For you? I'd do anything." He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "But I need you with me. Not as a journalist, not as a dancer. As my partner. My wife."

She lifted her head, meeting his eyes. "Is that what you want?"

"It's what I need." He cupped her face in his hands. "I need you, Larina. Not as a possession, not as a conquest. As my equal. My other half. The person who makes me want to be better."

She kissed him, soft and sweet. "Then that's what I'll be."

They lay there as the night deepened, talking about the future. About the club, about the family, about the life they would build together. It was the most honest conversation she'd ever had, and it felt like coming home.

When dawn broke over the city, Larina knew she had made the right choice. She had walked into this world as an outsider, a spy, a woman with a mission. But she was leaving it as something else entirely.

She was leaving it as Matteo's. And that was the only story that mattered.

Vows

The mirror showed Larina someone she barely recognized.

Not because the face was different. The same sharp cheekbones, the same watchful eyes that had spent too many years calculating threats. But the woman staring back at her held something in her expression that Larina couldn't quite name. Softness, maybe. Or the absence of armor.

The dress was simple. Ivory silk that caught the afternoon light streaming through the hotel suite's windows, fitted through the bodice and falling in a straight line to the floor. No train, no veil, no cathedral-length drama. She'd wanted something she could move in, fight in if necessary. Old habits.

Her hair was down. That was the thing that felt strangest. She'd worn it pinned back for so many years, tight and controlled, nothing that could be grabbed in a struggle. Today it fell past her shoulders in loose waves, and every time she caught her reflection, she felt briefly exposed. Vulnerable in a way that made her pulse quicken.

"You're stalling."

The voice came from the doorway. Elena leaned against the frame, arms crossed, a knowing smile playing at her mouth. She was wearing deep blue, her dark hair swept into an elegant twist. Matron of honor. The word still felt strange to Larina, who'd never imagined she'd have someone close enough to fill that role.

"I'm preparing," Larina said.

"You're standing here staring at yourself like you're waiting for permission."

Larina's mouth twitched. "Maybe I am."

Elena pushed off the doorframe and crossed the room. She stopped beside Larina, their reflections side by side in the mirror. Two women who'd spent years on opposite sides of a war that had nearly destroyed them both.

"You look incredible," Elena said quietly. "And you don't need permission. You need to go downstairs before your fiancé starts thinking you've changed your mind."

"He wouldn't think that."

"No. He'd come up here and find you. And then you'd have to explain why you were hiding in a hotel room instead of marrying him."

Larina turned from the mirror. "I'm not hiding."

"Then what are you doing?"

The question hung between them. Larina considered deflecting, falling back on the practiced evasions that had served her for so long. But this was Elena. Who'd seen her at her worst. Who'd forgiven her for things that shouldn't have been forgivable.

"I'm trying to figure out how to be someone who deserves this."

Elena's expression softened. "You already are that person. You've been becoming her for months. That's what Marcus sees. That's what all of us see."

"All four of you."

"The guest list isn't large, I'll admit. But the people who matter will be there."

Larina thought about the small gathering waiting downstairs. Marcus's sister, who'd flown in from Seattle and had been cautiously warm during their brief meetings. Elena's husband, David, who'd shaken Larina's hand with guarded eyes that said he was still deciding about her. Two of Elena's colleagues who'd become something like friends over the past months. And Marcus.

Always Marcus.

"Okay," Larina said. "I'm ready."

Elena smiled. "Yes. You are."

The ceremony took place in the hotel's rooftop garden. Late afternoon light slanted through the glass walls, turning everything golden. There were perhaps fifteen chairs arranged in a loose semicircle, white flowers on stands at intervals, an archway woven with greenery where Marcus stood waiting.

He wore a dark suit, simple and perfectly fitted. His face when he saw her was something Larina would carry with her for the rest of her life. Not just love, though that was there. Recognition. Like he was seeing something he'd been waiting for, and now that it had arrived, he could finally exhale.

Larina walked toward him. No music, no processional. Just her footsteps and the sound of her own breathing and the warm weight of Elena's hand on her arm for a moment before she let go.

When she reached him, Marcus took both her hands. His palms were warm. His eyes didn't leave hers.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

The officiant was a woman named Claire, silver-haired and calm, who'd met with them twice to understand what they wanted from the ceremony. She spoke briefly about commitment and choice, about the decision to build something together in a world that often tried to tear things down. Then she looked at Marcus.

"The vows you've written?"

He nodded. His thumbs moved against Larina's knuckles, a small restless motion that told her he was nervous. She squeezed back.

"I had a speech prepared," Marcus said. "I worked on it for weeks. Asked David for help. Asked my sister. Practiced in front of my bathroom mirror until I could say it without stumbling."

He paused. The corner of his mouth lifted.

"But standing here, looking at you, I can't remember a single word. So I'm going to tell you the truth instead."

Larina felt her breath catch.

"The truth is that I spent a long time building walls of my own. Different from yours, but walls just the same. I told myself I was being practical. Protecting myself. Making smart choices about who to trust and how much to give."

His grip on her hands tightened.

"Then you walked into my office and lied to my face, and something in me woke up. Not because of the lie. Because I could see the person underneath it. The one who was scared and fierce and trying so hard to survive. I wanted to know her. Even when I shouldn't have. Even when every reasonable part of me said to walk away."

A woman in the second row made a small sound. Larina thought it might have been Marcus's sister.

"I'm glad I didn't walk away. I'm glad I stayed long enough to see who you become when you're not just surviving. When you let yourself want something. When you choose to trust."

He lifted her hands, pressed his lips to her knuckles. When he spoke again, his voice was rough.

"I choose you. Not because you're perfect. Because you're you. Because every version of you I've seen is someone I want to know better. Because the life we're building is the one I want. Because I'd rather face everything that's coming with you beside me than face nothing alone."

Larina blinked. Her vision blurred. She'd told herself she wouldn't cry. She'd told herself a lot of things.

"Your turn," Claire said gently.

Larina opened her mouth. Closed it. Tried to remember the words she'd prepared.

Nothing.

So she spoke from the same place Marcus had found. The truth.

"I don't know how to do this," she said. "I know how to lie. I know how to run. I know how to close doors before anyone can walk through them. Those are the skills I built. Those are the things I practiced until they were automatic."

Her voice shook. She let it.

"You made me want different skills. You made me want to stay and be known and trust that being known wouldn't destroy me. That was terrifying. It's still terrifying. I'm standing here in a dress I can't fight in, with my hair down where someone could grab it, saying words that mean I can't take this back."

She saw him smile. Felt her own mouth curve in response.

"I don't want to take it back. I want to move forward. With you. Into whatever comes next. I want to be the person you see when you look at me. I want to deserve the faith you've put in me. I want to wake up next to you every morning and choose you again, and again, and again."

Her hands trembled in his.

"I love you. I didn't think I was capable of this. But I am. Because of you. For you. With you."

The silence that followed held weight. Larina could feel it pressing against her skin, warm and heavy.

Claire spoke the formal words. Asked the questions. They answered yes, I do, I will. Marcus slid a ring onto her finger. Simple platinum, no stone. She'd chosen it specifically. Something that wouldn't catch, wouldn't hinder, wouldn't remind her of chains.

Then Claire said "You may kiss your partner," and Marcus's hands came up to frame her face, and his mouth found hers, and the small gathering erupted in applause that sounded distant because all Larina could hear was her own heartbeat and the rush of blood through her veins and the voice in her head that said finally, finally, finally.

The reception was brief. Champagne toasts that made Larina's eyes sting. A dinner where Marcus's sister told her, quietly, "I can see why he chose you." Dancing on the rooftop as the sun went down, Marcus's arms around her, his mouth against her temple, his voice low in her ear saying "We did it."

By nine o'clock, they were alone.

The suite was different from the one where she'd prepared. Larger, with a sitting area and a bedroom visible through double doors. Someone had scattered rose petals across the bedspread. Larina stared at them and felt a laugh building in her chest.

"Elena's work," Marcus said.

"I'm going to kill her."

"Later."

He came up behind her. His hands settled on her shoulders, warm through the thin fabric of her dress. She leaned back into him, let her weight rest against his chest. His mouth found the curve where her neck met her shoulder.

"We're married," she said.

"We are."

"It doesn't feel real yet."

"Give it time."

She turned in his arms. His face was close, his eyes dark in the low light of the suite. She could see the pulse jumping in his throat. Could feel the evidence of his desire pressed against her hip.

"Before we do this," she said, "there's something I need."

His expression shifted. Wary. Trusting but wary. "What do you need?"

"No more secrets. Between us. Not anymore."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded.

"Okay. You first."

She took his hand and led him to the couch in the sitting area. They sat facing each other, knees touching. She held his hands in her lap and looked at their joined fingers while she spoke.

"When I was nineteen, I did something I've never told anyone about. Not Elena. Not my handler. Not you."

His hands tightened on hers. Encouragement.

"There was a man. A target. He was supposed to be extraction only, information gathering. But he figured out what I was. He came to my apartment. He had a gun."

The words came out flat. She'd trained herself to speak about terrible things without inflection.

"I wasn't faster than him. I wasn't smarter. I was just more willing to cross a line he wasn't ready for. He hesitated. I didn't."

Silence.

"I killed him," Larina said. "And I told my handler it was self-defense. And I've carried that for eleven years. The knowledge that I chose to take a life when I might have found another way. That I made that decision and lied about it and lived with it and never once let myself look at it directly."

She finally raised her eyes to his.

"That's the worst thing I've done. The thing I'm most ashamed of. And I need you to know it before we build a life together. I need you to know exactly who I am. What I'm capable of."

Marcus looked at her for a long time. His expression was unreadable. She felt fear move through her, cold and familiar.

Then he said, "I need to tell you something too."

Her heart stuttered.

"When you first disappeared, after I found out the truth about who you were, I did something I'm not proud of."

She waited.

"I had resources. Contacts from my old life, before I went legitimate. I used them. I tracked you. Not to find you, to hurt you. I wanted to understand how you'd done it. How you'd fooled me so completely. I needed to know if I was that stupid or if you were that good."

His jaw worked.

"I found things. About your past. About operations you'd run. About the people you'd been. I compiled a file. And I almost sent it to people who would have used it against you."

Larina's breath caught.

"I didn't. I sat in my apartment with the file on my desk and I thought about what sending it would mean. And I realized that I didn't want revenge. I wanted you. Even after everything. Even knowing what you'd done. I wanted you back."

He looked at her with eyes that held shame and hope in equal measure.

"So I deleted the file. And I waited. And when Elena reached out to me about the joint operation, I knew it wasn't coincidence. I knew you'd had something to do with it. And I let myself be found."

Larina stared at him.

"You knew?"

"I suspected. I hoped. I wasn't sure until I saw you across that room and your eyes met mine and I felt everything I'd been trying to bury come rushing back."

She started to speak. Stopped. Started again.

"I don't know what to say."

"You don't have to say anything. I just needed you to know. That I almost did something terrible. That I chose not to. That I've been carrying the weight of almost since then."

Larina lifted his hands. Pressed her mouth to his knuckles. Felt him tremble.

"We're a pair," she said quietly. "Two people who almost destroyed each other and chose not to."

"Is that enough? To build on?"

She looked at him. At the man who'd seen the worst of her and stayed. Who'd had the chance to ruin her and walked away from it. Who sat here now with shame in his eyes and his hands shaking in hers.

"It's enough," she said. "It's everything."

She kissed him. Not the careful kiss from the ceremony. This was deeper, slower. A kiss that said I know you now. All of you. And I'm still here.

He responded with a sound that vibrated through her chest. His arms came around her, pulling her closer. She went willingly, pressing herself against him, feeling the hard planes of his body against her softer curves.

"Take me to bed," she whispered against his mouth.

He stood, lifting her with him. She wrapped her legs around his waist, her dress riding up, and he carried her through the double doors into the bedroom. The rose petals were soft against her bare legs as he lowered her to the mattress.

He stood over her, looking down. His eyes traced her face, her throat, the swell of her breasts above the neckline of her dress. She felt no urge to cover herself. No instinct to hide.

"You're beautiful," he said. The words were simple. His voice made them something more.

"So are you." She reached up, began working the buttons of his jacket. "Let me see."

He shrugged out of the jacket. His tie followed. Then the shirt, button by button, revealing the chest she'd mapped with her hands and mouth so many times before. But tonight it felt different. Tonight every touch carried the weight of vows. Of promises made in front of witnesses. Of the decision to belong to each other.

She sat up, letting her legs hang over the edge of the bed. Her hands spread across his stomach, feeling the muscles contract under her touch. She leaned forward and pressed her lips to his chest, right over his heart. Felt it beating against her mouth.

"This is mine now," she said. "This belongs to me."

"It's been yours for a long time."

"I know. But now it's official."

She kissed his skin. Tasted salt and warmth. Let her mouth travel across his chest, learning him again. He made a sound above her, his hand coming to rest on the back of her head. Not guiding. Just touching. Anchoring.

Her fingers found his belt. She worked it open, then the button beneath, then the zipper. He helped her push the fabric down his hips. When he stepped out of his remaining clothes, he was bare before her, and she took a moment to simply look.

The body she knew so well. The body that had pressed her against desks and walls and mattresses. That had given her pleasure so intense she'd sometimes forgotten her own name. Tonight she wanted to worship it. To show him what he meant to her with every touch.

"Your turn," he said. His voice had dropped, roughened.

She stood. The dress had a hidden zipper at the side. She reached for it, but he stopped her with a hand on her wrist.

"Let me."

His fingers found the zipper. Drew it down slowly. The silk loosened, then slid from her shoulders, catching on her hips before he tugged it free. It pooled at her feet like spilled moonlight.

She stood in her underwear. Ivory lace, simple and elegant. His eyes moved over her, hot and hungry and reverent.

"I imagined this," he said. "For months. What you'd look like. What it would feel like to have the right to see you. To know you'd let me."

"You have the right," she said. "You've earned it."

His hands came up to cup her breasts through the lace. She inhaled sharply at the contact. His thumbs brushed her nipples, already tight, and she felt the sensation arrow straight down through her belly.

"I want to take my time," he said. "I want to learn every inch of you."

"We have all night."

"We have the rest of our lives."

The words hit her somewhere deep. She felt her eyes sting again. Reached up to pull his face down to hers.

This kiss was endless. Deep and slow and thorough. His tongue slid against hers, tasting and teasing. She opened to him, let him in, felt his hands slide down her sides to grip her hips. He lifted her and she wrapped her legs around him again, pressing herself against the hard length of him.

He walked them to the bed. Lowered her onto the petals. The soft brush of them against her back made her shiver. He came down over her, one knee between her thighs, his weight braced on his forearms.

"I love you," he said. "My wife."

"I love you. My husband."

The words were strange and wonderful. She said them again, just to feel them in her mouth.

His mouth traveled down her throat. She arched into him, offering herself. He kissed the hollow at the base of her neck, then lower, his lips finding the upper edge of her bra. He traced it with his tongue, making her squirm.

"Patience," he murmured against her skin.

"I've been patient for months."

"Then a little longer won't hurt."

He reached behind her and unclasped her bra with practiced ease. The lace fell away and she was bare to the waist. He looked down at her, his expression almost reverent, then lowered his head.

His mouth closed over her nipple and she gasped. The sensation was familiar but somehow new, charged with the weight of everything that had come before. His tongue circled, then flicked. She felt it in her core, a pulse of heat that made her thighs tighten.

He paid equal attention to both breasts. Kissing, licking, sucking. His hands cupped and shaped while his mouth worked. She ran her fingers through his hair, holding him against her, her hips moving in restless circles against his thigh.

"More," she said. "Please."

He kissed a path down her stomach. Her muscles jumped under his lips. When he reached the waistband of her panties, he paused, looking up at her from between her thighs. The image burned into her memory. His dark eyes, his swollen lips, the hunger in his expression.

He hooked his fingers in the lace and drew it down. She lifted her hips to help. Then she was naked before him, fully bare, and he settled between her legs with a sigh that sounded like coming home.

"Let me," he said. "Just let me."

She fell back against the pillows. Surrendered.

His mouth pressed against her inner thigh. Then the other. Kissing, nipping gently, working his way higher. She could feel her own wetness, could smell her arousal mixing with the scent of the roses. When his tongue finally touched her, she cried out.

He took his time. Long, slow strokes that traced every fold and crease. He found the places that made her gasp and lingered there. When he pushed his tongue inside her, she felt her body clench around it, seeking more.

His thumb found her clit. Circled it with maddening patience. She felt the pressure building, slow and sweet, a wave gathering offshore.

"Don't stop," she said. "Please don't stop."

He didn't. He worked her with his mouth and his hand, reading her responses, adjusting. When she got close, he backed off. When the urgency faded, he built her up again. Three times he brought her to the edge. Three times he pulled her back.

"Marcus," she finally said. "I can't. I need."

He took mercy on her. His lips closed around her clit and he sucked, gently at first, then harder. His fingers slid inside her, curving to find the spot that made her see stars. The wave crashed over her without warning, pulling her under, and she heard herself making sounds she couldn't control as her body shook apart.

He worked her through it, easing off as the aftershocks faded. When she finally went limp, he pressed a kiss to her thigh and moved up her body.

"Good?" he asked.

She laughed, breathless. "You know it was."

"I like hearing it."

"It was good. It was incredible. It was you."

She reached for him. Found him hard and ready, straining toward her. She wrapped her hand around him, stroking slowly, watching his face as pleasure moved through it.

"Now," she said. "I want to feel you."

He positioned himself between her thighs. The head of him pressed against her entrance. She was slick, ready, still trembling from her release. He pushed forward, just an inch, and they both stilled.

This was different. All the times before, there had been something between them. Suspicion. Fear. The ghost of secrets not yet told. Now all of that was gone. Burned away by truth and promises.

He slid deeper. She felt every inch of him, the stretch and the fullness and the rightness of it. When he was fully seated inside her, he stopped. Lowered his forehead to hers.

"I feel you," he said. "All of you."

"I know. I feel it too."

He began to move. Slow, deep strokes that pressed against her front wall with each thrust. She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, wanting more. Wanting everything.

His mouth found hers. The kiss was messy, desperate. She could taste herself on his tongue and it only made her hungrier. Her nails dug into his shoulders, leaving marks she'd see tomorrow. Marks that said mine.

He moved faster. His breathing grew ragged. She felt him thickening inside her, felt his rhythm start to stutter.

"Not yet," she said. "Not without me."

He reached between them. Found her clit with his thumb and worked it in tight circles. The pressure began building again, faster this time, a wave that was already halfway to shore.

"Come with me," he said. "Come with me."

She shattered. Her body clamped down on him, pulsing, and she felt him follow her over the edge. His hips jerked against her, his mouth open against her throat, a groan tearing from him that she felt more than heard.

They stayed locked together as the aftershocks moved through them. His weight settled onto her and she welcomed it, pressing him closer, not wanting any space between them.

When he finally softened and slipped free, he rolled to the side but kept her close. She curled against him, her head on his chest, her leg thrown over his. His heartbeat thundered under her ear.

"Wife," he said.

"Husband."

"I like the sound of that."

"So do I."

He was quiet for a moment. His hand traced patterns on her back.

"I meant what I said," he told her. "Every word."

"So did I."

"No more secrets?"

"No more secrets. No more walls. No more running."

He pressed his lips to her hair. "What about no more fighting?"

She laughed. "I don't know about that one. I still have skills. They might come in handy."

"I don't doubt it."

The night deepened around them. They talked in low voices about the future. The security firm they were building together. The apartment they'd chosen, with its view of the city and its extra room that neither of them mentioned out loud yet but both of them thought about. The life they were going to create, piece by piece, choice by choice.

He grew hard against her thigh. She reached down to stroke him, feeling him twitch in her hand.

"Again?" he asked.

"We have all night. We have the rest of our lives."

He rolled her onto her back. This time he moved over her differently, turning her, positioning her on her hands and knees. She braced herself against the headboard as he entered her from behind. The angle was deeper, more intense. She felt him in places she hadn't before.

His hands gripped her hips. He thrust slowly, letting her feel every inch. She pushed back against him, meeting his rhythm, taking him as deep as she could.

"Touch yourself," he said. "I want to feel you come."

Her hand moved between her legs. She found her clit, swollen and sensitive, and cried out at her own touch. He felt her reaction and groaned, his pace quickening.

It built faster this time. Her body was already primed, already hungry. She felt the pressure gathering, felt him thickening inside her again.

"Close," she said. "I'm close."

"Me too. Together."

They broke together. She felt him pulsing inside her, filling her, and the sensation pushed her own release higher. She collapsed forward onto the pillows and he followed her down, still joined, his weight pressing her into the mattress.

They lay tangled in the sheets and the rose petals. The room smelled like sex and flowers and the particular scent of him that she'd know anywhere. Her body ached in pleasant ways. She felt wrung out, emptied, refilled.

"I love you," she said. "I'll love you tomorrow. And the day after. And every day until there aren't any more days left."

He pulled her closer. "That's the plan."

"That's the vow."

She drifted in the warmth of him. Thought about the woman she'd been a year ago. Hard and sharp and closed off. The woman who'd walked into Marcus's office with a pocketful of lies and a heart she'd convinced herself was made of stone.

That woman was gone. Not dead, exactly. Transformed. The sharpness was still there when she needed it. The hardness could be called back when the situation demanded. But underneath it, something new had grown. Something soft and vulnerable and precious.

Something worth protecting.

Worth building around.

Worth staying for.

Marcus's breathing had gone slow and even. She listened to it, matched her own to its rhythm. Two hearts beating. Two breaths flowing. Two lives, intertwined.

"Marcus," she whispered.

"Mmm."

"Thank you. For seeing me. For staying."

He pressed his lips to her shoulder. "Thank you for letting me."

She smiled into the darkness. Closed her eyes. Let sleep take her, safe in the arms of the man she'd chosen and who'd chosen her back.

Tomorrow there would be work. There would be decisions to make and dangers to face and a world that didn't care about their happiness. But tonight there was this. This bed. This body against hers. This heart beating under her hand.

This life.

Their life.

Just beginning.

New Dawn

Larina woke to the slow creep of morning light through gauze curtains. The sheets were tangled around her legs, and Matteo's arm lay heavy across her waist, his breath warm against her shoulder. She didn't move. She let herself feel everything: the ache between her thighs, the solid warmth of his body pressed along her spine, the ring on her finger catching the pale gold sun.

She was his wife.

The thought should have terrified her. A week ago it would have. But the woman who had walked into the club three months ago felt like a stranger now. That woman had been running. From her handler's demands. From the truth of what she felt every time Matteo looked at her. From the inevitable moment when she would have to choose.

She had chosen.

Matteo stirred behind her, his arm tightening. His voice came rough with sleep. "You're thinking too loud."

She smiled against the pillow. "I'm not thinking at all. For the first time in months, I'm not thinking."

He pressed a kiss to her bare shoulder. "Good. Stay there."

She turned in his arms, facing him. His dark hair was mussed, his jaw shadowed with stubble. He looked softer like this. Younger. She traced the line of his brow with her fingertip. "I need to make a call."

Something flickered in his eyes. Caution. Understanding. "Kline."

"Yes."

"You know what you're going to say?"

She held his gaze. "I'm going to tell him I'm done. That the investigation is over. That I chose you."

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he pulled her closer, burying his face in her hair. "You don't know what that means to me."

"I think I do."

They lay there for a while longer, the silence full of everything they had already said to each other. Then she slipped out of bed, pulled on one of his shirts, and picked up her phone.

The call was shorter than she expected. Kline listened. He argued. She didn't budge. When he threatened consequences, she told him she had enough evidence of his own corner-cutting to make his life difficult if he tried to retaliate. He went quiet. Then he hung up.

She stood in the middle of the bedroom, the phone cold in her hand, and waited for the guilt to come. It didn't. She felt light. Free.

Matteo appeared in the doorway, wearing only his trousers. He didn't ask. He just looked at her, and she nodded.

"It's done."

He crossed the room in three strides and took her face in his hands. His kiss was deep and slow, a claiming and a surrender all at once. When he pulled back, his eyes were bright.

"Then we have work to do."

The club was quiet when they arrived. Morning light filtered through the high windows, catching the dust motes that drifted through the empty space. Tony was already there, coffee in hand, looking tired but alert.

He nodded at Larina. No suspicion in his eyes anymore. Just acceptance.

"Family's here," he said. "In the back."

Matteo took her hand. "Ready?"

She squeezed his fingers. "Ready."

The back office was crowded. Four men she recognized from the wedding, plus two older men she hadn't met. They stood when she entered. Matteo guided her to the chair at the head of the table and pulled it out for her.

She sat.

For the next two hours, she watched Matteo work. He spoke with the calm authority of a man who had earned every ounce of his power. He laid out the new structure. The legitimate businesses would expand. The illegal operations would be consolidated and controlled. There would be no more turf wars, no more unnecessary bloodshed.

And Larina would be his partner. Not just his wife. His equal in everything that mattered.

There were questions. Doubts. One of the older men, a silver-haired man named Caruso, looked at her with flat suspicion. "She's a journalist. She came here to destroy us. Why should we trust her now?"

Larina met his gaze. "Because I'm not a journalist anymore. And because I have more to lose than any of you if this family falls."

Caruso stared at her. Then he nodded once.

The meeting ended with handshakes and grudging respect. When the last man left, Larina let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

Matteo pulled her to her feet. "You did well."

"I was terrified."

"You hid it perfectly." He kissed her forehead. "That's the first lesson."

His office was the same as it had always been. The leather chair. The heavy desk. The shelves lined with books he had actually read. But everything felt different now. She was different.

He sat in the chair and pulled her onto his lap. She went willingly, straddling him, her dress riding up her thighs.

"I want to give you something," he said.

"What?"

"A role. A real one. You'll help me run the legitimate side of the business. The club, the restaurants, the real estate. You'll have my ear on every decision."

She traced the collar of his shirt. "And the other side?"

"You'll know everything. But you won't be in the room. Not until you're ready."

She kissed him softly. "I'm ready now."

"No." His hands settled on her hips. "Not yet. You need to learn the rhythm first. Trust me."

She did. Completely. The realization hit her like a wave, and she let it carry her under.

"I trust you," she said. "With everything."

His hands tightened on her hips. "Say it again."

"I trust you, Matteo. I love you. I chose you."

He kissed her then, hard and hungry, and she melted into him. His hands moved up her thighs, pushing her dress higher. She arched into his touch, her fingers tangling in his hair.

"I want to celebrate," she whispered against his mouth. "Just us. Right now."

His laugh was low and rough. "Then celebrate."

She reached between them, unbuckling his belt with practiced ease. He watched her, his eyes dark and focused. She loved the way he looked at her. Like she was the only woman in the world.

"Tell me what you want," he said.

"You. All of you. No holding back."

He stood, lifting her with him, and laid her on the desk. Papers scattered. A lamp wobbled. She didn't care. She pulled him down to her, her legs wrapping around his waist.

He entered her slowly, deliberately, watching her face the whole time. She gasped at the fullness of him, the way he stretched her, filled her. Her hands gripped his shoulders.

"Look at me," he said.

She did. His eyes burned into hers as he began to move. Slow at first. Deep. Each thrust a declaration. She matched his rhythm, her hips rising to meet his, her breath coming in soft, broken moans.

"You're mine," he said. "Say it."

"I'm yours."

"Again."

"I'm yours, Matteo. Only yours."

He sped up, his control slipping. She felt the edge approaching, that bright, shattering peak. She held his gaze, let him see everything. The love. The surrender. The joy.

"Come for me," he said. "Let me feel it."

She did. Her body clenched around him, waves of pleasure pulling her under. He followed a moment later, his groan lost against her throat as he spilled into her.

They stayed like that, tangled together on the desk, breathing hard. She stroked his hair, her heart pounding.

"I love you," she said.

He lifted his head, his smile soft and real. "I love you too, Larina Stasli."

Six months later, Larina stood at the window of the penthouse they now shared, looking out at the city lights. The club was thriving. The legitimate businesses were growing. And the rest of the family had settled into the new structure with surprising ease.

Matteo came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. He pressed a kiss to her neck.

"What are you thinking about?"

She leaned back into him. "How different everything is. How I never expected this."

"Regrets?"

"None."

He turned her in his arms, his hands cradling her face. "You gave up everything for me."

"I gave up a lie. I found the truth." She smiled. "I found you."

He kissed her softly, a promise and a prayer. When he pulled back, his eyes were bright.

"Then let's build something real. Together."

She nodded, her heart full. "Together."

The city glittered below them, full of danger and possibility. But Larina wasn't afraid anymore. She had chosen her path, and she would walk it with him.

Every step. Every risk. Every dawn.
