Centering the Wheel

Camille Foster paused outside the studio door, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag. The building smelled faintly of earth and something sharper, like rain on concrete. She had driven here straight from the lawyer's office, still wearing the same blouse she had chosen that morning in hopes it would make her look like someone who had her life together. Mid-thirties, recently divorced, and now standing in front of a pottery class like it might somehow stitch the torn edges of her back together.

She pushed the door open. The space was larger than she expected, with high windows letting in late-afternoon light that caught on rows of shelves lined with half-finished mugs and bowls. A few other people were already there, chatting softly while they tied on aprons. Camille felt the familiar tug of self-doubt. She did not belong here. She had never made anything with her hands except the occasional dinner that Mark had pushed around his plate.

A tall woman moved between the wheels at the center of the room. Short dark hair, olive skin dusted with pale clay, an apron tied low over fitted jeans. She carried herself with the easy certainty of someone who knew exactly where every inch of her body belonged. When she turned, her green eyes found Camille immediately.

"You must be new," the woman said. Her voice was low, steady. "I'm Daphne Coldiron. Welcome."

Camille managed a small smile. "Camille Foster. I signed up last week. Beginner wheel class."

Daphne nodded once, then gestured toward an empty station near the back. "Take that one. We'll get you started once everyone's settled. Aprons are on the hooks. Don't worry about getting dirty. That's the point."

Camille tied the apron around her waist and sat on the low stool. Her hands felt too delicate for this, soft from years of office work and polite dinners. She glanced around at the other students, mostly women her age or younger, laughing easily with one another. She kept her own hands folded in her lap.

Daphne moved through the room with quiet authority, demonstrating how to center a lump of clay on the wheel. Her strong hands pressed down with measured force, and the clay responded, rising and settling into a smooth dome. Camille watched the way Daphne's forearms flexed, the way her fingers left faint ridges in the spinning surface. Something about the focused calm of it made Camille's chest tighten.

When Daphne reached her station, she placed a fresh lump of clay on the wheel. "Ready?"

"I think so," Camille said. Her voice came out smaller than she intended.

Daphne stepped behind her. The stool was low, so the instructor had to lean in close, her body a solid presence at Camille's back. "Feet flat. Hands steady. We'll do this together the first time."

Before Camille could answer, Daphne reached around and covered her hands with her own. The contact was firm, warm, clay-dusted. Daphne's palms pressed Camille's fingers into the spinning lump, guiding the pressure with slow, deliberate movements. The wheel hummed beneath them. Clay squished between their joined fingers, cool and yielding.

"Breathe," Daphne said near her ear. "Don't fight it. Let the wheel do the work. Your hands just shape it."

Camille tried to focus on the clay, but every nerve seemed tuned to the woman behind her. Daphne's breath stirred the loose strands of hair at Camille's neck. Her chest brushed lightly against Camille's shoulders with each slow rotation. The pressure of those strong hands over hers felt intimate in a way Camille had not expected. Heat pooled low in her belly, sudden and startling.

She shifted on the stool, trying to ignore the growing warmth between her thighs. This was ridiculous. She was straight. She had been married to a man for eight years. Yet the closeness, the low voice, the steady guidance of those capable hands sent a slick, unexpected response through her body. Her panties felt damp against her skin.

Daphne's fingers adjusted, pressing Camille's thumbs deeper into the center of the clay. "There. Feel how it opens when you stop resisting?"

Camille swallowed. "Yes," she managed. Her voice sounded hoarse.

They worked in silence for several minutes, the wheel spinning, the clay rising into a rough cylinder under their combined touch. Every adjustment of Daphne's hands sent fresh sparks along Camille's nerves. She could smell the faint clean scent of the instructor's skin beneath the clay dust. Her fair cheeks flushed hot. She hoped the other students were too absorbed in their own wheels to notice.

When Daphne finally stepped back, Camille's hands kept moving on their own, trembling slightly. The cylinder wobbled and collapsed into a messy mound. She stared at it, embarrassed.

"First time is always messy," Daphne said. She wiped her palms on her apron, eyes steady on Camille's face. "You'll get better with practice. Come back tomorrow evening for a private session if you want extra help. No charge for the first one."

Camille nodded, unable to meet those green eyes for more than a second. "Thank you. I might do that."

The rest of the class passed in a blur of instructions and polite chatter. Camille kept her hands busy, but her thoughts circled back to the moment of contact, the way Daphne's body had fit behind hers, the low murmur of encouragement that had made her wet without a single explicit word. She told herself it was nothing. Nerves. The novelty of being touched after months of careful distance from everyone.

Yet when she stood to leave, her thighs brushed together and she felt the unmistakable slickness. She kept her bag in front of her as she said goodbye and stepped out into the cooling evening air.

Inside the car she sat for a long moment, staring at her clay-streaked fingers. Her heart beat too fast. She had come here to rebuild something simple and safe. Instead the first touch of guidance had cracked open a question she was not ready to name. She started the engine and drove away, the scent of clay still clinging to her skin.
