The Surprise Project

Sabrina Rock stood in the middle of her kitchen and sighed at the faded cabinets. At thirty-three she felt invisible in her own life. Justin had left that morning for his week-long trip and the house already felt too quiet. Their marriage was comfortable and safe but it left her restless in ways she never admitted out loud. She ran her hands over the old countertop and wondered if a surprise renovation might spark something again.

She had spent the last two days researching contractors and finally settled on a crew that could finish the kitchen and living room while Justin was gone. The deposit was paid. The materials were ordered. All that remained was for them to show up and begin.

The doorbell rang at exactly nine. Sabrina smoothed her modest blouse and jeans before opening the door. Three men stood on the porch. The one in front was tall and broad-shouldered with dark hair and visible tattoos curling up his forearms. He extended a hand.

“Mrs. Rock? I’m Richard Chalet. This is Kyle and Blake. We’re here to get started on your project.”

His grip was firm and warm. Sabrina felt a small flutter in her stomach and quickly let go. “Please call me Sabrina. Come in. I’ll show you the space.”

The men stepped inside. Richard’s eyes moved over the kitchen with professional interest but lingered a moment longer on her. She felt the weight of that look and told herself it was nothing.

“Nice place,” Richard said as they followed her. “You’ve got good bones here. We’ll open this up nicely. Make it feel bigger, brighter.” He paused and added with a small grin, “We like to go hard and deep on the demo so everything comes out clean.”

Sabrina’s cheeks warmed. She laughed nervously. “That sounds… thorough.”

Kyle and Blake chuckled behind her. Richard’s gaze stayed on her face a second too long before he nodded toward the cabinets. “We’ll start by clearing these out today. Shouldn’t take long if we keep a steady pace.”

They moved through the house discussing measurements and timelines. Sabrina tried to focus on the plans but kept catching the low rumble of Richard’s voice. Every time he spoke he seemed to stand a little closer than necessary. His cologne mixed with the faint scent of sawdust already clinging to his shirt.

When they reached the living room Richard pointed at the wall between the two spaces. “We’ll knock this out. Open concept. You’ll be able to watch us work from anywhere.” He glanced at her again. “Might get a little messy. Hope you don’t mind getting a bit dirty while we’re here.”

The words landed differently this time. Sabrina swallowed and looked away, pretending to study the outdated carpet. A strange warmth spread low in her belly. She told herself it was just the excitement of the project. Nothing more.

Richard’s crew began unloading tools from the truck. She offered them coffee and they accepted. While they drank she stood in the doorway watching Richard’s hands as he checked a level. Those hands looked strong. Capable. She imagined them gripping a hammer and felt another uninvited pulse of heat.

“Everything okay, Sabrina?” Richard asked, catching her staring.

She blinked and forced a smile. “Fine. Just thinking about how different it will look when you’re done.”

“It’ll look good,” he said. “Trust me. By the time your husband gets back you won’t recognize the place.” His smile was easy but his eyes held something sharper. “We aim to please.”

The rest of the morning passed in the sound of measured conversation and the first careful sounds of demolition. Sabrina stayed out of the way but found reasons to drift back into the kitchen. Each time Richard offered a quick update his tone stayed professional yet the undercurrent of suggestion never quite left.

By noon the first cabinet had come down. Dust clung to her jeans where she had brushed against a sawhorse. Richard handed her a bottle of water and their fingers touched.

“You’re going to want to stay hydrated,” he said quietly. “Things are about to get intense in here.”

Sabrina took the bottle and felt the first clear stirrings of arousal settle between her thighs. She pressed her legs together and told herself it would pass. Justin would be home soon. This was only a renovation. Nothing more.

Yet when Richard turned back to his crew she found herself watching the way his shirt stretched across his back. The way his tattoos shifted with each movement. She took a long sip of water and wondered what she had just invited into her home.
