The Initial Confession

Arthur Carver paused outside the frosted glass door, his hand hovering near the brass handle. The hallway of the high-rise was silent except for the low hum of the building's climate control. He adjusted his tie, though it already sat straight against his collar. His pulse thudded in his ears. Coming here had felt like the only option left after months of restless nights, yet the reality of stepping into a sex therapist's office made his stomach tighten.

He pushed the door open and entered a reception area that smelled faintly of sandalwood and fresh linen. A single leather chair sat beside a low table stacked with neutral magazines. No receptionist waited. Instead, a second door stood slightly ajar at the far end. Arthur cleared his throat.

"Come in, Mr. Carver," a woman's voice called from inside. Warm. Steady. "I'm ready for you."

He stepped through the doorway into a spacious office lined with bookshelves and a wide window overlooking the city skyline. Behind a polished walnut desk sat Lulu Lust. She rose as he entered, her auburn hair catching the afternoon light in smooth waves. Her green eyes met his directly, sharp yet softened by a small, welcoming smile. She wore a tailored ivory blouse tucked into a charcoal pencil skirt that hugged her curves without clinging. The effect was professional, but the way she moved suggested quiet confidence.

"Arthur," she said, extending her hand. "I'm Lulu. Please, make yourself comfortable."

Her grip was firm, her skin cool against his palm. Arthur managed a nod and took the seat across from her, an overstuffed armchair that forced him to lean back slightly. Lulu settled into her own chair, crossing her legs with deliberate ease. A notepad rested on her lap, though she made no move to pick up a pen yet.

"I appreciate you coming in today," she continued. "I know these first sessions can feel exposing. Take your time. There's no script here."

Arthur exhaled, the sound shaky. "I almost canceled twice on the way over."

Lulu's smile deepened, not mocking, but understanding. "That's common. Most people who book with me have spent weeks convincing themselves it's a bad idea. What made you keep the appointment?"

He glanced toward the window, watching a plane cut across the sky. "I need to understand what's happening. Or at least say it out loud to someone who won't... judge the way a friend might."

"I'm here to listen without judgment," Lulu said. Her voice held a subtle lilt of interest now, the professional tone layered with something warmer. "Why don't we start with why you chose this particular kind of therapy? What brings you to me specifically?"

Arthur shifted, fingers drumming once on his thigh. "My wife, Gwendolyn. Things have changed between us. Not in the usual way couples drift. It's more... she's changing. Her career, her confidence. And I'm reacting in ways I didn't expect." He paused, searching for the right words. "I read about your work with power dynamics. It felt like the only place I could start."

Lulu nodded, the movement slow. "Power dynamics can be complicated, especially when they intersect with work and marriage. Tell me about Gwendolyn's career. You mentioned changes there."

Relief flickered through Arthur at the concrete question. He sat forward a fraction. "She works at Dawson Dynamics. Same company as me, different division. About eight months ago she started reporting to Nathaniel Dawson, our CEO. He took her under his wing for a big project. First promotion came quickly after that. Senior manager to director in under three months."

"That's impressive," Lulu observed. "How did Gwendolyn react to the news?"

"She was thrilled. We celebrated at home with champagne. She looked... different that night. More alive. She kept checking her phone for emails from Nathaniel, even while we were toasting." Arthur's mouth twitched at the memory. "I told myself it was just excitement about the work."

Lulu tilted her head. "And what did you feel in that moment?"

"Proud. Mostly." He hesitated. "But there was something else. A tightness in my chest when she mentioned how Nathaniel had praised her initiative during the pitch. He apparently pulled her aside afterward and said she had real executive potential."

"Nathaniel sounds like a mentor figure," Lulu prompted, her green eyes steady on his face. A faint flush touched her cheeks, barely noticeable, yet Arthur caught it. She leaned in slightly, notepad still untouched.

"He is. Charismatic guy. Tall, always in control of the room. Gwendolyn started staying later at the office after that. She'd come home with new ideas, new energy. Her wardrobe shifted too. Tighter skirts. Higher heels. She said it was to match the new title, but I noticed."

Arthur rubbed the back of his neck. The words were coming easier now, though each one carried weight. "She'd talk about meetings with Nathaniel over dinner. How he valued her input. How he let her lead presentations in front of the board. I kept hearing his name."

Lulu's lips curved, not quite a smile, more an invitation. "Hearing his name repeatedly can create interesting emotional echoes. Did you ever meet Nathaniel yourself during this period?"

"A few times in passing. Handshakes at company events. He always remembered Gwendolyn's name first. The way he looked at her..." Arthur trailed off, then forced himself onward. "It was professional. At least on the surface."

"And beneath the surface?" Lulu asked softly. Her posture remained open, yet the air between them felt charged with the weight of what he hadn't said yet.

Arthur met her gaze. "I started wondering if the promotions were purely about talent. Gwendolyn's sharp, no question. But Nathaniel's attention seemed... personal. She didn't discourage it. If anything, she leaned into it. Late nights became routine. She'd text me that she was grabbing dinner with the team, but the team was usually just her and Nathaniel."

Lulu made a quiet note on her pad, the scratch of pen against paper the only sound for a moment. When she looked up again, her expression held both empathy and a spark of something more engaged. "How did those late nights affect your evenings at home?"

"Gwendolyn would come in energized. She'd kiss me hello, then disappear into the study to answer more emails. Sometimes she'd mention Nathaniel's feedback on her work. Always positive. Always pushing her further." Arthur's voice lowered. "I found myself listening for those details. Waiting for them. It was confusing."

"Confusion often marks the beginning of these shifts," Lulu said. She uncrossed her legs and recrossed them the other way, the motion drawing Arthur's attention briefly before he looked away. "You mentioned her first promotions. Walk me through one specific example. What changed in her demeanor after the first one?"

Arthur closed his eyes for a second, picturing the scene. "It was a Tuesday. She called me from the office, voice higher than usual. Nathaniel had pulled her into his office that afternoon and offered her the director role. She accepted on the spot. When she got home she was wearing this new blouse, silk, a little lower cut than her usual style. She kept touching the collar while she told me the story, like she was still feeling the moment."

"Did you ask her about the change in clothing?" Lulu inquired, her tone gentle but direct.

"I did. She laughed and said Nathaniel had commented that she looked like leadership material. She wanted to live up to it." Arthur opened his eyes. "That was the first time I felt it. That mix of pride and something hotter, something I couldn't name yet."

Lulu's eyes brightened with quiet interest. She set the notepad aside entirely. "Arthur, thank you for sharing that level of detail. It's clear these workplace changes carry emotional weight for you. How are you feeling right now, having said it aloud?"

He considered the question. The tightness in his chest had eased slightly. "Exposed. But also lighter. Like I can finally start putting pieces together."

"That's the goal of our work together," Lulu replied. A subtle warmth colored her words. "We'll go at your pace. Next time, if you're ready, we can explore what those early feelings evolved into. For today, how about we stop here and you can reflect?"

Arthur nodded. He stood, extending his hand again. Lulu rose with him, her fingers brushing his in another firm clasp. The contact lingered a fraction longer than necessary. As he turned to leave, she spoke once more.

"Arthur? One small thing. Many clients find it helpful to keep a private note of any thoughts or physical reactions that surface between sessions. No pressure. Just something to consider."

He managed a small smile. "I'll think about it."

Outside, the hallway felt cooler than before. Arthur walked toward the elevators with steadier steps, the confession already replaying in fragments. Gwendolyn's new blouse. Nathaniel's name on her lips. The way Lulu's green eyes had held his without flinching. The session had only scratched the surface, yet the first layer had lifted. He pressed the elevator button and waited, already wondering what he would say when he returned.
