Intake Trance

The waiting room smelled like lavender and old paper. Luisa sat on the edge of a beige armchair, her fingers twisting the strap of her handbag into a tight spiral. Beside her, Angel scrolled through his phone with the kind of focused attention he usually reserved for work emails.

She watched his thumb move across the screen. Three years since they had last touched with any real heat. Three years of polite pecks on the cheek and hands that brushed past each other in the kitchen without lingering. She had suggested therapy. He had agreed. Now they were here, and she was not sure which outcome terrified her more.

"You okay?" Angel asked without looking up.

"I'm fine."

He did not push. He never pushed anymore.

A door opened at the end of the hall, and a woman stepped out. She was tall, early forties, with ash-blonde hair pulled back in a sleek bun that showed off the sharp angles of her face. Her gray eyes moved between them with calm precision, and she smiled in a way that felt both warm and clinical.

"Luisa? Angel? I'm Dr. Orla. Please come in."

Her voice was low and smooth, the kind of voice that made you want to lean in and listen more carefully. Luisa stood, her legs feeling lighter than they should have. Angel pocketed his phone and followed.

The office was nothing like what Luisa had expected. No couch. No dim lighting. Instead, two comfortable armchairs faced a third, arranged in a loose triangle. Soft afternoon light filtered through gauze curtains, and the walls were lined with books on neurology, behavioral psychology, and something called somantic hypnotherapy.

"Please, sit wherever you feel comfortable," Orla said, settling into one of the chairs with practiced ease.

Luisa took the chair across from her. Angel sat beside her, close enough that their knees almost touched but not quite.

Orla folded her hands in her lap. "Thank you both for coming in. I know that taking this step can feel vulnerable. I want you to know that my approach is gentle and gradual. We won't rush into anything."

Luisa nodded, her throat tight.

"Can you tell me what brought you here?" Orla asked, her gaze moving between them.

Angel cleared his throat. "We, uh. We've been struggling. Intimately."

"Intimately," Orla repeated, letting the word hang in the air. "That can mean many things. Can you be more specific?"

Luisa felt heat creep up her neck. She had practiced this conversation in her head a dozen times, but the words still felt clumsy on her tongue. "We don't have sex anymore. We haven't for a long time."

"How long?"

"Three years."

Orla did not flinch. She simply nodded, her expression soft and attentive. "That must be difficult. For both of you."

"I want to want him," Luisa said, and the confession came out in a rush. "I love him. I just. Something's broken."

"Nothing is broken," Orla said, and her voice carried a quiet certainty that made Luisa's shoulders drop an inch. "Desire isn't a fixed thing. It can shift, it can fade, and it can be rekindled. Sometimes in ways we don't expect."

Angel shifted in his seat. "What do you mean?"

Orla smiled. "I use a combination of talk therapy and guided relaxation techniques. The relaxation work helps bypass the conscious mind's resistance and allows us to access deeper patterns of thought and feeling. It's very gentle. You remain in control at all times."

Luisa's heart beat faster. "Like hypnosis?"

"Similar, but I prefer the term guided relaxation. It sounds less intimidating." Orla's gray eyes met hers, and Luisa felt a strange pull, like the woman was looking through her. "Would you be willing to try a brief exercise with me? Just to see how it feels?"

Luisa glanced at Angel. He shrugged, his expression open but uncertain.

"Okay," she said.

"Good." Orla's voice dropped a fraction, becoming softer, more rhythmic. "I want you to take a slow breath in. Hold it for a moment. And release."

Luisa obeyed. The air left her lungs in a shaky sigh.

"Again. Breathe in. Hold. Release."

Her body was responding before her mind caught up. Her shoulders softened. Her jaw unclenched.

"Now I want you to notice the feeling of the chair beneath you. The fabric against your hands. The weight of your feet on the floor."

Orla's words painted a picture, and Luisa found herself following the details one by one. The soft cotton of her dress against her thighs. The slight give of the cushion beneath her. The cool air on her cheeks.

"With every exhale, you can allow yourself to sink deeper into relaxation. Deeper into comfort. Deeper into trust."

The word trust landed somewhere in Luisa's chest, warm and solid.

"You don't need to do anything. You don't need to perform. You simply need to be here, in this moment, open and receptive."

Open and receptive. The phrase echoed in her mind, settling into the spaces between her thoughts.

"That's right. Open and receptive. Those words can carry you deeper."

Luisa felt a flush spread across her chest and up her neck. It wasn't embarrassment. It was something else, something she couldn't name. A warmth that pooled low in her belly and spread outward.

"Many people experience a physical response to deep relaxation," Orla said, her tone matter of fact. "That's normal. That's your body telling you it feels safe enough to let go."

Luisa swallowed, her mouth dry. She hadn't said anything about the warmth, but Orla knew. Orla saw.

"I'm going to count down from five," Orla said. "With each number, you'll find yourself more deeply relaxed, more open to the suggestions that serve your highest good. Five. You can feel the relaxation spreading through your chest. Four. Down through your stomach. Three. Warm and loose. Two. Your hips softening. One. Fully relaxed and deeply receptive."

Luisa's eyes were closed. She hadn't realized when she closed them. The room felt distant, muffled, like she was underwater.

"You're doing beautifully," Orla said. "In this state, your mind is more flexible. More willing to consider new possibilities. And that's all I'm asking you to do. To consider."

Luisa nodded slightly, her head feeling heavy and light at the same time.

"I'm going to give you a few phrases to hold onto. You don't need to do anything with them. Just let them settle. Let them work."

Orla paused, and Luisa felt the weight of the silence.

"Relaxation opens the door to desire. Each time you relax, you become more open to your own pleasure. More open to your husband's pleasure. More open to whatever form that pleasure takes."

The words slipped into her like water into sand.

"You might find yourself thinking about things you've never thought about before. That's okay. That's part of the process. Trust the relaxation. Trust the openness. Trust yourself."

Luisa's hands were trembling slightly in her lap. She could feel her pulse in her throat, in her wrists, between her legs.

"When you come out of this state, you'll feel refreshed. Calm. And curious. You'll remember everything, but the words will continue to work beneath the surface, guiding you toward greater intimacy."

Orla began counting up. One. Two. Three. Each number brought Luisa closer to the surface, but the warmth stayed.

Four. Five. Luisa opened her eyes.

Angel was watching her with a look she hadn't seen in years. Curiosity. Want.

"How do you feel?" Orla asked.

"Good," Luisa said, and she meant it. "Really good."

"The exercise we did today was very basic. If you decide to continue working with me, I'll give you audio files to listen to at home. They reinforce the relaxation and the openness. The work happens gradually, over time."

Luisa looked at Angel. He wasn't scrolling through his phone. He was looking at her like she was a stranger he wanted to get to know.

"We'd like to continue," she said.

Orla smiled, and there was something in that smile that Luisa couldn't quite read. Something satisfied. Something patient.

"I'm glad to hear that. I'll send you home with your first file tonight. Just listen to it before bed. Nothing more."

Luisa nodded, already anticipating the sound of that voice in the dark.

They stood to leave, and Orla shook both their hands. Her palm was cool and dry against Luisa's flushed skin.

"Welcome to the beginning," Orla said.

In the car, Angel started the engine and then paused, turning to face her. "That was... something."

"Yeah."

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

Luisa looked at her hands. They were still trembling. She was still warm. And underneath the calm, there was a flicker of something hungry.

"I've never been more sure of anything."

She didn't know why she said it. But it felt true. And that scared her more than anything.

That night, she downloaded the audio file and plugged in her earbuds. Angel lay beside her, his breathing slow and even. Almost asleep. Almost.

She pressed play.

Orla's voice filled her ears, soft and commanding.

"Breathe in. Hold. Release. Good. You're safe. You're open. You're ready to receive."

Luisa closed her eyes and let the words take her.

"Relaxation opens the door to desire."

She felt the warmth return, spreading through her limbs like honey. Her skin tingled where the sheets touched it, every nerve ending suddenly awake and hungry for sensation.

"Open and receptive."

Her hips shifted on the mattress. A slow, involuntary roll that pressed her thighs together. The friction sent a spark of pleasure up her spine, and she bit her lip to keep from making a sound. Angel was right there, inches away, oblivious.

"Trust the process."

She did. God, she did. The voice wrapped around her like silk, and her body responded in ways she hadn't felt in years. Her nipples tightened against the thin cotton of her sleep shirt, aching for touch. Between her legs, the warmth concentrated into a pulsing ache that matched the rhythm of Orla's words.

"You're safe. You're open. You're ready to receive."

Her hand moved without conscious thought, sliding down her stomach, fingers tracing the edge of her panties. She should stop. Angel was right there. But the voice told her she was safe, she was open, and her body believed it. Her fingers slipped beneath the fabric and found slick heat waiting for them.

A soft moan escaped her lips before she could swallow it. She froze, heart pounding, but Angel's breathing stayed slow and even. Still asleep. Still oblivious.

"Each time you relax, you become more open to your own pleasure."

Her fingers moved again, circling slowly, finding the swollen bud that had been dormant for so long. The pleasure built in waves, each one cresting higher than the last. She imagined Orla's gray eyes watching her, that knowing smile, those words pouring into her ears like honey.

More open to your husband's pleasure.

She thought of Angel, but the image shifted, blurred. She saw his hands on another woman's hips. Saw him gasp with pleasure that wasn't hers to give. And instead of jealousy, she felt a surge of wet heat between her fingers.

More open to whatever form that pleasure takes.

The orgasm took her by surprise, crashing through her in waves. She buried her face in the pillow to muffle her cry, her body arching off the mattress, fingers still working, drawing out every last tremor of pleasure until she collapsed, spent and shaking.

The audio file ended. Silence filled her ears. Her breathing was ragged, her heart racing.

She turned to Angel, her mouth open, ready to speak.

But the words wouldn't come. Not yet. Not tonight.

Tomorrow, she promised herself. Tomorrow.

She fell asleep with Orla's voice still echoing in her skull, and for the first time in three years, she dreamed of her husband with another woman. And it didn't make her sad. It made her wet.

She woke with a gasp, her hand between her legs, her cheeks burning with shame and pleasure.

And she knew.

She was already changing.
