Homecoming Power Grab

Bryant Hayes stood in the doorway of the living room, arms crossed over his chest as he watched the driveway through the window. The afternoon sun stretched shadows across the lawn. When the familiar sound of Katie's car engine finally cut through the quiet neighborhood, he had already been waiting for over an hour. The delay told him plenty about her state of mind.

The front door swung open without a knock. Katie breezed in, her duffel bag slung over one shoulder. The first thing Bryant noticed was the outfit. A cropped white top that left her midriff completely bare, paired with denim shorts so short they barely covered the curve of her hips. Her long dark hair hung loose, falling in waves around her shoulders, and her lips were glossed a shade too bright for a casual afternoon homecoming.

She dropped her bag by the stairs and turned to face him with a wide smile. "Hey, Dad. Miss me?"

Bryant's gaze traveled over her once, taking in the deliberate presentation. The tightness of the top, the way the shorts rode up when she moved. He kept his expression neutral. "You're late. I said noon."

Katie rolled her eyes and walked past him into the living room, flopping onto the couch with practiced ease. "Traffic was terrible. You know how the highways get on Fridays." She stretched her legs out, letting the shorts inch higher until the lower curve of her ass was barely covered. "Besides, I'm back now. That's what matters, right?"

He didn't sit. He remained near the archway, watching her. "You have classes on Monday?"

"I'm taking a personal day." She waved a hand dismissively. "I need to settle in, unpack, see my friends. You know how it is."

"I know how you make it." Bryant's voice was calm, measured. "You've been back less than five minutes and you're already telling me what you're going to do."

Katie's smile faltered for just a fraction of a second before she recovered. She sat up, leaning forward, letting the neckline of her top gape slightly to reveal the swells of her breasts. "Come on, Dad. I'm twenty-two. I've been on my own all semester. I think I can handle a night out with my friends."

"You had a night out with your friends last weekend. That's why you're back early, isn't it?"

Her jaw tightened. "That was a misunderstanding. I told you, the RA overreacted."

"The RA called me, Katie. She said there were fourteen people in your dorm room, alcohol everywhere, and you were dancing on the furniture in your underwear." Bryant's tone didn't rise, but the words landed heavy. "That's not a misunderstanding. That's a problem."

Katie stood up, crossing the room toward him. She moved with a deliberate sway, her hips shifting with each step. When she stopped, she was close enough that he could smell her perfume, something floral and sweet that made him think of summer nights. She looked up at him through her lashes. "I was just having fun. You used to want me to have fun. Remember? You told me to enjoy college."

"Enjoying college and getting written up are two different things." He held his ground, not backing away from her proximity. "You're home because the school put you on probation. That means you're under my roof, under my rules."

She let out a dramatic sigh and stepped even closer, her chest nearly brushing against his arm. He could feel the warmth radiating from her skin. "What rules? You're not going to ground me, are you? I'm not a teenager anymore, Dad." She reached out and placed her hand on his forearm, her fingers tracing a slow line up to his bicep. The touch was feather-light, almost electric. "I'm a grown woman. I can make my own choices."

Bryant looked down at her hand, then back at her face. He saw the calculation in her eyes, the way she was watching for his reaction. She was testing him, pushing to see how far she could go before he pushed back.

"You can make your choices," he said slowly. "But you'll live with the consequences. And right now, the consequence is that you're home, and you'll follow my household rules. Curfew is ten. No parties. No drinking. And you'll help around the house while you're here."

Katie's hand dropped from his arm. Her expression shifted from flirtatious to frustrated in a heartbeat. "Ten? That's ridiculous. I'm not a child."

"You're acting like one."

"I'm acting like an adult who wants to see her friends." She stepped back, crossing her arms under her chest, which only pushed her breasts up higher in the tight top. The fabric strained against the curves. "You can't keep me locked up in here. I'll just leave."

"You can try." Bryant's voice was quiet, but there was steel underneath. "But I've already talked to your mother. We're in agreement. You're on probation here too."

Katie's eyes widened, then narrowed. "You called Mom? At work?"

"She needed to know. We're a team, Katie. You don't get to play us against each other anymore."

She made a sound of disgust and turned away, pacing toward the window. Her bare legs moved with quick, angry strides. "This is so unfair. I come home to relax, and you're already treating me like a prisoner."

"You come home because you got caught." Bryant moved into the room, taking a seat in the armchair by the fireplace. He kept his posture relaxed, his hands resting on the armrests. "And you came home expecting to charm your way out of any consequences. I've seen you do it before."

She whirled around, her expression a mix of anger and something else. Something calculating. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means I know you, Katie. I know how you operate." He studied her, letting his gaze linger on her outfit. "You showed up dressed like that because you thought it would distract me. You thought if you looked pretty enough, I'd forget about the RA's phone call and let you do whatever you wanted."

Her cheeks flushed, but she didn't deny it. Instead, she lifted her chin defiantly. "And is it working?"

"No."

The word hung in the air between them. Katie stared at him, her lips parted, her breath coming a little faster. She looked like she wanted to argue, but something held her back. She was reassessing, trying to find a new angle.

Bryant watched her mind work. He saw the flicker of frustration, the way her fingers curled into fists at her sides. She was used to getting what she wanted, used to using her body and her charm to manipulate situations. It had worked on boys her age, on professors, on her mother when she was distracted. But it wasn't going to work on him.

"Fine," she said finally, her voice clipped. "Ten o'clock. Whatever. I'll be in my room."

She turned and walked toward the stairs, her footsteps heavy on the hardwood. Halfway there, she stopped and looked back over her shoulder. "You know, Dad, you used to be fun. What happened to you?"

"You grew up," he said simply. "And you forgot how to act like it."

Her eyes flashed, but she said nothing. She grabbed her duffel bag and disappeared up the stairs, her footsteps pounding on each step.

Bryant sat in the armchair for a long moment after she was gone. He listened to the sounds of her moving around in her room, the opening and closing of drawers, the click of her phone screen as she started texting someone. Probably her friends, complaining about him.

He pulled out his own phone and opened a note. He typed a few lines, documenting what he had observed. The outfit, the physical contact, the attempts at manipulation. The way she had tried to use her body as a bargaining chip. The way she had escalated when he didn't respond the way she expected.

He had been too lenient with her in the past. He saw that now. He had let her get away with too much, hoping she would grow out of it. But she hadn't. She had only gotten bolder, more confident in her ability to twist situations to her advantage.

That was going to change.

He saved the note and stood up, walking to the bottom of the stairs. He could hear her voice now, low and angry, talking to someone on the phone. He caught fragments of the conversation. "He's being such a dick... no, I can't... he said ten... I know, right?"

Bryant climbed the stairs quietly. He stopped outside her door, which was cracked open. He could see her sitting on the edge of her bed, her back to him, still on the phone. The cropped top had ridden up even further, exposing the smooth skin of her lower back and the dimples just above her shorts.

"You should have seen his face," she was saying, her voice laced with annoyance. "He didn't even blink. I thought for sure I could get him to loosen up, but he's like a brick wall."

There was a pause while the other person responded. Then Katie laughed, a sharp, brittle sound. "Yeah, well, I'm not giving up that easily. He'll crack. They always do."

Bryant stepped back from the door, silent on the carpet. He returned to the living room and sat down again, his mind already working. She thought she could break him. She thought her tactics would eventually wear him down.

He pulled out his phone again and made another note. He would need to be more systematic. He would need to document everything, build a case. And when the time was right, he would show her exactly how wrong she was.

The afternoon stretched on. Katie stayed in her room for hours, emerging only once to grab a soda from the kitchen. She had changed into a different outfit, a sundress that was shorter than the shorts had been, with thin straps that showed the curve of her shoulders. She walked past him without speaking, her bare feet padding on the tile.

Bryant watched her from the living room. She opened the refrigerator, bent over to look inside, and stayed there longer than necessary. The dress rode up, exposing the backs of her thighs and the lower curve of her ass. When she straightened and turned, she caught his gaze. She smiled, slow and deliberate.

"Thirsty?" she asked, holding up the soda can.

"I'm fine."

She shrugged and walked back toward the stairs, pausing at his chair. She leaned down, close enough that he could see the freckles scattered across her chest, the way her dress gaped to reveal the inner curve of her breasts. The scent of her perfume washed over him again. "You sure? I could get you something else. Water? Tea?"

"I'm fine, Katie."

She held his gaze for a moment longer, her tongue darting out to wet her lower lip, then straightened and walked away. Her hips swayed with each step, and she glanced back at him from the stairs, her expression triumphant, as if she had already won something.

Bryant watched her go. He noted the dress, the bend, the offer. He pulled out his phone and added it to his notes.

She was playing a game. She didn't know it yet, but he was already three moves ahead.

The front door opened, and Missy walked in, her work bag slung over her shoulder. She looked tired but smiled when she saw him. "Katie's home?"

"She's upstairs."

Missy set down her bag and came to sit on the arm of his chair. "How did it go?"

"About as expected." He showed her his phone, the notes he had taken. "She's already tried three different approaches. The outfit, the proximity, the offer of service."

Missy read the notes, her expression unreadable. She handed the phone back. "She's not going to give up easily."

"Neither am I."

Missy studied him for a moment. "You have a plan?"

"I'm building one." He put the phone away. "But first, I need to see how far she's willing to go."

From upstairs, they heard the sound of music starting, something with a heavy bass. Katie's voice joined in, singing along off-key.

Missy sighed. "She's testing you."

"Let her test." Bryant leaned back in his chair. "I'll be ready."

The music grew louder, and Katie's footsteps sounded on the ceiling, moving back and forth across her room. She was pacing, probably still on the phone, still plotting.

Bryant looked up at the ceiling, at the spot where her room was. He thought about the RA's phone call, about the dorm room full of people, about his daughter dancing in her underwear. He thought about the way she had looked at him today, the confidence in her eyes, the belief that she could manipulate him into submission.

She was wrong.

He would show her exactly what happened when you tried to play games with someone who knew all the rules.

The evening passed in a tense quiet. Katie came down for dinner in another outfit, this time a pair of tight yoga pants that clung to every curve of her legs and ass, paired with a sports bra that left little to the imagination. Her hair was pulled up in a messy bun that exposed the slender column of her neck. She ate quickly, barely speaking, and retreated back to her room before the dishes were cleared.

Bryant watched her go, then turned to Missy. "She's planning something."

"Of course she is." Missy stacked the plates. "She's your daughter. She's stubborn."

"She's reckless."

"Same thing." Missy paused, looking at him. "What are you going to do?"

Bryant didn't answer immediately. He stared at the empty doorway where Katie had disappeared. "I'm going to give her enough rope to hang herself. And then I'm going to show her the footage."

"Footage?"

He nodded. "I've been recording the common areas for months. The living room, the kitchen, the hallway. She doesn't know."

Missy's eyebrows rose. "You've been watching her?"

"Watching everyone. It's a security system." He met her gaze. "And it's going to be very useful."

Missy was quiet for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "Just be careful, Bryant. She's still our daughter."

"I know." He reached out and took her hand. "That's why I'm doing this."

Upstairs, Katie's music had changed to something slower, more sultry. The bass vibrated through the floorboards.

Bryant let go of Missy's hand and stood up. "I'm going to check the cameras."

He walked to his home office, a small room off the kitchen. The computer monitor was dark, but he tapped the keyboard and it flickered to life. The security software loaded, showing four camera feeds. The front door. The back door. The living room. The kitchen.

He clicked on the living room feed and scrolled back to the afternoon. He watched Katie's arrival, her outfit, her movements. He watched her approach him, touch his arm, lean in close enough that her breasts nearly grazed him. He watched her bend over in the kitchen, her dress riding up to reveal the smooth skin of her thighs and the edge of her underwear.

He saved the clips and organized them into a folder.

Then he opened a new document and began to write. He outlined his observations, her tactics, her patterns. He listed potential consequences, training protocols, reinforcement schedules.

By the time he finished, it was past midnight. The house was quiet. Katie's music had stopped.

Bryant saved the document and shut down the computer. He sat in the dark office for a long moment, thinking about the days ahead.

She wanted to play games. She wanted to test his limits.

She had no idea what she was walking into.

He stood up and walked to the stairs. He paused at the bottom, looking up toward her door. It was closed, a sliver of light showing underneath.

He climbed the stairs quietly and stood outside her door. He could hear her breathing, slow and even. Asleep.

He reached out and touched the doorframe, his fingers resting on the wood.

"Goodnight, Katie," he whispered.

Then he turned and walked back to his bedroom, already planning tomorrow.
