The Intimidating First Week

Brett adjusted his tie for the third time in the elevator, the mirrored walls reflecting back a young man who looked exactly like what he was: ambitious, polished, and trying not to look terrified. Twenty-five years old, fresh from two years at a mid-tier agency, he had fought for this executive assistant position at Meridian Strategies like it was a seat on a rocket ship. The paycheck was double what he had been making. The exposure to real power players was priceless. And the VP he would be supporting was a legend.

Dierdre Hargrove.

He had read every article, studied every campaign she had steered to victory. The woman was ruthless in the boardroom and elegant everywhere else. Now he was about to meet her in person. The elevator chimed on the executive floor. Brett stepped out into a hushed corridor that smelled of expensive coffee and even more expensive perfume.

The corner office waited at the end of the hall. Its glass walls offered a commanding view of the city, but what stopped Brett cold was the woman behind the massive walnut desk. Dierdre sat with perfect posture, silver-streaked auburn hair swept into an elegant updo that caught the morning light. Her tailored charcoal suit clung to a curvaceous frame that looked both powerful and undeniably feminine. The pencil skirt ended just above the knee, revealing toned calves wrapped in sheer black stockings. Her heels were sharp enough to draw blood.

She did not look up immediately. Instead she finished signing a document with a decisive stroke of her Montblanc pen. Only then did those sharp green eyes lift and pin him in place. Brett felt the weight of her gaze like a physical hand on his chest.

"Mr. Reeves. You are three minutes early. I approve." Her voice was crisp, cultured, and carried the faintest trace of amusement. "Come in. Close the door."

He obeyed, the soft click of the latch sounding far too loud. Dierdre rose from her chair in one fluid motion. At five-foot-ten in those heels she nearly matched his own six-one height. She circled the desk slowly, inspecting him the way a buyer might examine a new asset.

"You look younger than your file photo," she observed. "Good bone structure though. That matters in this industry. Clients trust a handsome face." She stopped a foot away, close enough that he caught the warm scent of her perfume, something expensive and slightly spicy. "Tell me, Brett. Are you ambitious?"

"Yes, Ma'am."

The honorific slipped out naturally. Something in her bearing demanded it. A faint smile curved her lips.

"Good. Because I do not tolerate laziness, excuses, or fragile male egos. You will work late. You will work weekends when I require it. And you will do whatever I ask without question. Is that clear?"

"Crystal clear, Ma'am."

She studied him another long moment, then returned to her chair. "Excellent. Your desk is just outside my office. You will keep my calendar, screen my calls, and handle any personal errands I require. Starting with picking up my dry cleaning at lunch. The ticket is on your desk. The shop is three blocks away. Do not wrinkle anything."

Brett nodded and retreated before she could dismiss him verbally. His heart hammered against his ribs. He had expected demanding. He had not expected the low thrum of electricity that seemed to crackle in the air around her.

The rest of the morning passed in a blur of orientation documents and learning the complex filing system. At twelve-thirty he retrieved the dry cleaning. The garments were heavy, expensive suits and blouses that smelled faintly of her perfume. Carrying them back through the lobby, he felt strangely exposed, as if everyone could tell he was already performing personal service for the intimidating VP.

When he returned, Dierdre was on a conference call. She motioned him inside with two fingers, then pointed at the floor beside her chair. He hung the clothes carefully on the hook by her private bathroom before approaching. She covered the phone receiver.

"The cables under my desk are a disaster," she said quietly. "Crawl under there and sort them. I want every cord labeled and untangled. Do it quietly while I finish this call."

Brett blinked. The space beneath her desk was cramped, maybe two feet high. Her long legs already occupied much of it. But her expression left no room for hesitation. He lowered himself to his knees, feeling the thick carpet press into his slacks, and crawled beneath the polished wood.

Up close, everything about her was overwhelming. The smooth material of her pencil skirt stretched taut across her thighs. Her stockings whispered faintly as she crossed her ankles. One sharp heel nearly brushed his shoulder. He could smell the faint leather of her shoes and the warmer scent of her skin. His pulse thudded in his ears.

This is just a task, he told himself. Executive assistants do whatever is needed. Stop noticing how her calves look like they were carved from marble.

He began untangling the mess of power cords and data cables, trying to stay silent. Above him, Dierdre continued her call with cool authority, negotiating contract terms that involved millions. Every time she shifted, her foot came dangerously close to his hands. Once, the pointed toe of her heel rested briefly on the back of his palm, not hard, but deliberately. He froze. She did not acknowledge it. After a moment she moved her foot away and kept speaking as if nothing had happened.

By the time he finished labeling every cord, his knees ached and his face felt flushed. He backed out carefully and remained on his knees beside her chair, waiting for permission to stand. Dierdre ended her call and looked down at him with cool appraisal.

"Much better. You follow directions well, Brett. That will be useful." She reached down and brushed an invisible speck of lint from his shoulder. The casual touch sent an unexpected jolt through him. "You may stand. Bring me the quarterly reports from the shared drive. Then fetch my afternoon espresso. Almond milk, no sugar."

The rest of the afternoon followed the same pattern. Small tasks delivered with crisp commands. Each time she said his name it carried the weight of ownership. By five o'clock most of the floor had emptied, but Dierdre showed no signs of leaving. At six-thirty she appeared at his desk.

"Special project tonight. The old campaign files in my office need reorganizing by client and year. I want them color-coded and entered into the new database. You will stay until it is finished."

It was not a question. Brett swallowed. "Yes, Ma'am. Should I order dinner for us?"

Her smile was thin and pleased. "For me. You can eat at your desk when you finish. Sushi. The usual order is in the system."

By eight o'clock the city outside the windows had become a glittering grid of lights. Brett sat cross-legged on the floor of Dierdre's office surrounded by boxes of old files. She worked at her desk, the soft click of her keyboard the only sound besides the occasional rustle of paper. Every so often she glanced over at him, her expression unreadable.

He was aware of her gaze like a physical touch. The way she watched him sort through her history at the company made him feel strangely transparent. As if she could see past the ambitious young executive to the part of him that was already wondering what it might feel like to please her in ways that had nothing to do with filing systems.

At nine-fifteen she stood and stretched, the movement pulling her blouse tight across full breasts. Brett quickly looked back down at the papers in his lap.

"You are thorough," she said. "Most men your age rush through menial work. They consider it beneath them." She walked over and stopped beside him, the sharp points of her heels inches from his thigh. "Do you consider this work beneath you, Brett?"

"No, Ma'am." His voice came out slightly hoarse. "I'm here to learn from the best."

She gave a soft laugh that somehow managed to sound both elegant and dangerous. "The best. How charmingly naive. Stand up."

He rose, joints stiff from sitting on the floor so long. Dierdre studied him at close range. The top of her head nearly reached his nose, yet he felt six inches tall under that gaze.

"You have potential," she murmured. "Raw material that could be shaped into something useful. But only if you are willing to be molded. Are you willing?"

The question felt heavier than it should have. Brett met her eyes and felt something shift inside his chest, equal parts fear and a dark, unwelcome excitement.

"I want to succeed here, Ma'am. Whatever that requires."

Her smile deepened. For the first time he noticed the perfect crimson of her lipstick and the way her teeth looked very white against it. "Careful what you promise, pet. Words like that can be binding."

She had called him pet. The word should have offended him. Instead it slid under his skin and lodged there, warm and disturbing. He felt his cock twitch traitorously against his thigh and prayed she could not tell.

Dierdre returned to her desk and sat down. "Finish the last two boxes. Then you may go home. Be here at seven sharp tomorrow. I have an important client meeting and I will need you... close at hand."

The way she said close sent another unwelcome pulse of heat through him. Brett returned to the files, hyper-aware of her presence behind him. The office felt smaller. The air felt thicker. Every time he moved he could feel her eyes tracking him.

It was nearly ten when he sealed the final box and entered the last records into the database. His back ached. His mind felt foggy with exhaustion and something far more complicated. Dierdre had not spoken again, but he could feel her satisfaction like a tangible thing.

"Well done," she said at last, rising and collecting her purse. "You may call a car on the company account. Expense it under my name." She paused at the door, silhouetted against the brighter lights of the outer office. "One more thing, Brett."

He straightened, waiting.

"Tomorrow you will wear a darker suit. Charcoal or navy. And no cologne. I prefer my assistants to smell only of obedience and good soap." Her green eyes glittered. "Do you understand?"

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Excellent. Sleep well."

She left him there in the darkened office, heart racing, cock half-hard in his trousers, and the unsettling realization that he was already in deeper than he had anticipated. The elevator ride down to the lobby felt like descending into unknown territory. Outside, the cool night air did nothing to clear his head.

In the back of the town car he kept replaying the way her heel had rested on his hand under the desk. The casual authority in her voice when she had called him pet. The elegant cruelty that seemed to coat every word like expensive gloss.

This is just the first week, he thought, staring at the passing city lights. You can handle this. You've worked for difficult people before.

But even as the thought formed, he knew Dierdre Hargrove was something else entirely. She was not merely difficult. She was magnetic. Dangerous. The kind of woman who could rewrite a man's entire purpose without him realizing it was happening.

Back in his small apartment, Brett stripped off his suit and stood under the shower far longer than necessary. The hot water did not wash away the memory of her perfume or the low, commanding cadence of her voice. When he finally crawled into bed, sleep refused to come easily. Instead his mind supplied images he had no right to entertain: Dierdre's long legs crossed beneath her desk, the way her skirt had tightened when she moved, the cool weight of her gaze as she watched him kneel.

His hand drifted downward before he could stop it. He stroked himself slowly, shame burning in his cheeks even as pleasure coiled at the base of his spine. In his imagination she stood over him, one sharp heel pressing into his chest while she told him exactly how she expected to be obeyed.

He came with her name half-whispered into his pillow, then lay in the dark afterward feeling equal parts satisfied and horrified. This was his boss. This was his career. He should be thinking about marketing strategies and presentation decks, not fantasizing about being on his knees for a woman nearly twice his age who clearly enjoyed making him squirm.

Yet as exhaustion finally pulled him under, one thought circled lazily through his mind like smoke.

She called me pet.

And God help him, some treacherous part of him had liked it.

The first week had only just begun, and Brett already suspected he had made a bargain whose true terms he would not fully understand until it was far too late to escape them. Outside his window the city kept humming, indifferent to the quiet unraveling of one young man's carefully laid plans. Inside, Dierdre's commanding presence had already taken root in the darkest corners of his thoughts, elegant, ruthless, and undeniably seductive.

He fell asleep wondering what fresh humiliations tomorrow would bring, and hating how much he already anticipated finding out.
