Flagged and Flickering
Megan Decker stared at the endless queue of flagged videos, the blue glow of her monitor carving shadows into her tired face. The moderation office stretched around her in sterile rows of identical cubicles, the air thick with the hum of servers and the faint smell of burnt coffee. Her shift had already stretched past midnight, another grueling late night in a string of them that blurred together like the clips she was forced to review. Each one carried raw human desire, stripped bare and dumped into the system for someone like her to judge and delete. Her mind had long since numbed to it, a professional detachment that let her click through without really seeing.
She rubbed her eyes and clicked the next one. A couple tangled on a rumpled bed, bodies moving with urgent rhythm, moans spilling from the speakers. Megan's fingers hovered over the flag button out of habit, but something in this one pulled at her differently. The woman's face twisted in pleasure, the man's hands gripping hard enough to leave marks, the sound of skin meeting skin sharp and wet. Normally she would have scanned it in seconds and moved on, but tonight the footage seemed to linger on her screen longer than it should have.
A flush crept up her neck without warning. Heat bloomed low in her belly, foreign and insistent, as if someone else's climax had reached through the pixels and brushed against her nerves. Megan straightened in her chair, breath catching. The sensation flooded her senses all at once, sweet and electric, tasting like salt and sweat and something deeper she couldn't name. It wasn't hers. She knew that much. Yet her skin prickled with borrowed pleasure, her pulse quickening in time with the video's frantic rhythm.
She paused the clip and leaned back, pressing a hand to her chest. The feeling ebbed but left a faint hum behind, like static under her skin. Exhaustion, she told herself. Burnout from too many nights staring at other people's hunger while her own life stayed flat and gray. The office lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in the same washed-out pallor. She had been doing this job too long. That was all it was.
Still, her fingers trembled as she resumed the video. The couple finished with a shared cry that seemed to echo inside her skull. Megan forced herself to tag it and move on, but the residual taste lingered on her tongue, warm and metallic. She swallowed hard and reached for her water bottle, the plastic cool against her palm. The rest of the queue felt dull by comparison, each new clip sliding past without the same spark. She finished her shift on autopilot, logging out with a sigh that felt heavier than usual.
The drive home passed in a haze of streetlights and empty roads. Megan kept the radio low, trying to shake the odd flush that had followed her out of the building. She rationalized it again, aloud this time, as if speaking the words would make them true. "Just tired," she muttered. "Too many hours. Need sleep." The city lights streaked across her windshield, and she gripped the wheel tighter, willing her body to settle back into its usual numbness. By the time she reached her apartment, the sensation had faded to a distant throb, easily dismissed.
She dropped her keys on the counter and stripped out of her work clothes without turning on more than a single lamp. The sheets felt cool when she slid into bed, but her mind refused to quiet. Every time she closed her eyes, fragments of the video flickered behind her lids. The woman's arched back. The slick sound of movement. That stolen rush of pleasure that had not belonged to her.
Sleep came in fits. Dreams pulled her under without mercy. In them, she stood inside the footage itself, surrounded by the couple's heat. Hands that were not hers traced skin that was not hers. Pleasure built and broke in waves that crashed through her nervous system, leaving her gasping in the dark. She tasted it again, richer now, the echo of someone else's climax flooding her mouth and spine. Her body hummed with it, every nerve alive and greedy. The dream shifted, pulling her deeper, until the sensation became a living thing that wrapped around her and refused to let go.
Megan woke tangled in damp sheets, heart pounding. The clock read just after four. She lay still, listening to the faint city noise outside her window, and tried to steady her breathing. The hum had returned, stronger than before, a low vibration along her spine that felt almost like fingers stroking from within. She pressed a palm to her lower back, half expecting to find something different, but her skin was the same as always. Just tired. Just burned out. She repeated the words until they lost meaning and drifted into a shallower sleep, the taste of borrowed pleasure still lingering at the edges of her awareness.
