Lecture Suggestion

Carlton Royce slid into his usual seat in the back row of the lecture hall, notebook open and pen already poised. The room filled quickly with the low murmur of students settling in, but he kept his focus narrow. Advanced Occult Studies was the one class that tested him, and he refused to let any of it slip past his guard. He had read every assigned text twice and still found holes in the arguments. Magic as a structured force? Hypnotic suggestion as measurable phenomenon? He planned to dismantle those claims one citation at a time.

Professor Lilly Blackwell entered exactly on time. She moved with the kind of unhurried grace that made the entire hall quiet without a single raised voice. Tall, elegant, her raven-black hair pulled into a loose twist that left a few strands to frame her porcelain face. The tailored blazer she wore hugged her curves without ever looking unprofessional, and the faint glow of shifting sigil tattoos peeked above her collar whenever she turned her head. Her violet eyes swept the room once, and Carlton felt the weight of them even from the back row.

"Good afternoon," she said, and the words carried. Not loud, but perfectly placed. Each syllable landed with a measured cadence that seemed to slow the air itself. "Today we examine the architecture of suggestion. How a voice, a glance, a repeated phrase can bypass the conscious mind and settle deeper."

Carlton wrote the phrase down automatically. He told himself it was for later dissection. Her voice rolled on, smooth and low, threading through the lecture like a current. She spoke of historical cases, of sigils that amplified intent, of subjects who reported an inexplicable pull toward obedience. Every few sentences she paused, letting the silence stretch just long enough for her words to linger. Carlton’s pen slowed. He caught himself leaning forward slightly and straightened at once.

She clicked to the next slide. A simple glowing sigil appeared on the screen behind her. "Observe how the shape itself seems to breathe," she said. Her gaze moved across the students and landed on him. For three full seconds their eyes held. Carlton’s pulse kicked hard against his ribs. Heat pooled low in his stomach, sudden and unwelcome. He shifted in his seat, annoyed at the involuntary response. It was nothing. Just the intensity of the lecture, the late hour, the stress of midterms stacking up.

Lilly continued without breaking rhythm. "Some of you will feel that pull more strongly than others. That is not weakness. It is sensitivity. Sensitivity can be trained." Her lips curved in the faintest smile, and Carlton’s cock twitched again, thickening against the seam of his jeans. He pressed his thighs together under the desk and forced his attention back to his notes. Ridiculous. He was twenty-two, not some teenager. This was academic interest, nothing more.

She paced slowly along the front of the hall, her heels clicking in a steady, hypnotic rhythm. "Consider the student who challenges every premise. The skeptic. He believes he is immune. Yet the very act of resisting creates an opening. Resistance requires attention. Attention creates connection." Her eyes found him again. Carlton’s breath caught. The heat in his groin intensified, a slow, insistent throb that made it difficult to sit still. He swallowed and looked down at his notebook, writing the word "connection" with more force than necessary.

By the time the lecture ended, Carlton’s shirt clung damply to his back. He packed his things quickly, determined to escape before she noticed anything unusual. Students filed out around him, chatting about the upcoming midterm. Carlton stayed seated a moment longer, willing his body to settle. It had to be stress. Long nights, too much caffeine, the pressure to maintain his perfect record. Nothing to do with the way her voice had wrapped around certain words or the way her eyes had seemed to see straight through him.

As he stood, Professor Blackwell’s voice carried across the emptying hall. "Mr. Royce. A moment, if you please."

He turned. She stood at the lectern, one hand resting lightly on the wood, the other gesturing him forward with calm authority. Carlton approached, keeping the desk between them as a shield. "Professor."

"Your questions in the readings have been sharp," she said. The compliment landed with the same measured cadence as her lecture. "I appreciate a mind that pushes back. It makes the work more interesting."

Carlton felt the flush rise again, unbidden. "Thank you. I still have reservations about the measurable effects you claim."

Her smile deepened. "Reservations are healthy. They also indicate where deeper exploration might help. Office hours are listed on the syllabus. I keep late slots open for students who want to test their skepticism in a more focused setting."

The suggestion settled into the space between them like a quiet command. Carlton opened his mouth to decline, then found himself nodding instead. "I could come by this week. If the timing works."

"Thursday at eight," she said. The words carried a subtle weight that made his pulse jump. "Bring your annotated readings. We will see how far your resistance holds when the room is smaller and the attention is undivided."

Carlton left the hall with his bag slung over one shoulder and a strange, restless heat still coiled in his gut. He told himself it was nothing. Just academic curiosity. Just stress. Yet as he walked across campus, the memory of her voice replayed in his head, and the decision to attend office hours felt less like a choice and more like the only logical next step. He would prove her theories wrong in private, where no one else could see the way his body had already begun to betray him.
