The Interview
Sonia Sterville leaned back in her leather chair and studied the closed door of her corner office. Sunlight slanted across the polished mahogany desk, catching on the single silver fountain pen she kept aligned with the edge of her blotter. At forty-eight she had learned the value of small rituals. They kept the world orderly. They kept people predictable.
She crossed her long legs, the soft whisper of silk stockings the only sound in the room. Her dark hair, threaded with silver, sat in its usual sleek chignon. The style sharpened her cheekbones and made her green eyes look even more piercing. She liked that effect. It saved time.
The intercom buzzed once. Sonia pressed the button without hurry.
“Send him in.”
The door opened. Nathan Cole stepped inside exactly as his résumé had promised: twenty-three, recent graduate, slim build, neat charcoal suit that still carried the faint scent of new wool. His messy brown hair refused to stay completely tamed, and his hazel eyes moved across the room with open curiosity before settling on her. Good. Curiosity was useful. Subservience would be better.
“Ms. Sterville,” he said, voice steady but respectful. “Thank you for seeing me.”
She did not stand. Instead she let the silence stretch just long enough to watch how he handled it. Most candidates shifted their weight or cleared their throats. Nathan simply waited, hands clasped lightly in front of him, gaze level. Then, after three full seconds, those hazel eyes dropped to the floor. Only for a moment. But the moment was enough.
Interesting.
“Sit,” she said. The word left her lips like a command dressed in velvet. She watched him choose the chair directly across from her instead of the one slightly to the side. Deliberate. Eager to face her. She filed the observation away.
Nathan sat. His posture was straight, shoulders back, but his fingers betrayed him. They flexed once against his thighs before stilling. Sonia allowed herself the faintest smile.
“Your résumé is impressive on paper, Mr. Cole. Top of your program. Letters of recommendation that border on gushing. Tell me why you want this particular internship when you could be applying anywhere else.”
He met her eyes again. “Because your company doesn’t just manage portfolios. You shape markets. I want to learn from someone who doesn’t follow trends but creates them.”
Flattery, but delivered with genuine heat. Sonia tilted her head, letting the silence ask the next question for her.
He continued without prompting. “I’m not looking for a line on my résumé, Ms. Sterville. I’m looking for someone willing to push me. I work best when expectations are high.”
There it was again. That subtle note of surrender wrapped in ambition. She felt the first real stir of interest low in her stomach. Not lust yet. Recognition. The boy carried the shape of what she needed. Now she would see if he could be molded into its exact form.
“High expectations,” she repeated, tasting the words. “That can mean many things. Late nights. Personal errands that fall outside a normal job description. Complete availability. Are you prepared for that kind of commitment?”
Nathan’s throat worked. She watched the small movement with clinical pleasure. “Yes, ma’am. I don’t have any ties that would interfere. No family in the city. No other obligations.”
Ma’am. The word had slipped out naturally. Sonia felt her pulse kick once, a quiet thrill she kept carefully hidden behind her composed expression. She uncrossed and recrossed her legs, the soft sound drawing his eyes downward for half a second before he caught himself.
“Look at me,” she said softly.
His gaze snapped back to hers. Color had risen in his cheeks. Not embarrassment exactly. Something closer to awareness. She held the eye contact until he began to breathe a fraction faster. Then she smiled, slow and deliberate.
“Good. I value directness. And I value obedience even more. The man who takes this position will be my shadow. You will learn to anticipate what I need before I ask for it. My coffee order. The precise temperature I prefer my office. Which dry cleaner I trust with my silk blouses. You will do these things without complaint and without expecting praise for doing what is simply required. Do you understand?”
“Yes, Ms. Sterville.” His voice had dropped half an octave. Obedient. Attentive. She could almost see the invisible leash forming between them already.
Sonia stood then, unfolding her tall frame with the grace that came from daily Pilates and absolute self-control. She walked around the desk and leaned against its front edge, close enough that the toe of her patent leather pump nearly brushed his shoe. From this angle she could see the faint flutter of his pulse at the base of his throat.
“There will be extra duties,” she continued, letting her tone slide into something more intimate. “Duties that remain between us. I require discretion above all else. In return I offer training that most interns could only dream of. Not just in finance. In discipline. In focus. In learning exactly how to please someone who holds power over you.”
She watched his lips part slightly. Not shock. Not quite. More like a man realizing the ground had shifted beneath his feet and finding, to his own surprise, that he did not want to step back.
“I’m not interested in games or ambiguity, Mr. Cole. If you accept this position you will be mine to shape. My time is too valuable for anything less. Do you still want it?”
The question hung between them. Nathan’s fingers tightened on his thighs again. She could see the internal war playing across his expressive face: ambition, nervousness, and something darker, sweeter, that made his pupils widen. His gaze flicked to her mouth, then quickly back to her eyes.
“I do,” he said at last. The words came out rough, as if they had to fight their way past sudden dryness in his throat. “I want it. Whatever it requires.”
Sonia felt a surge of possessive satisfaction so sharp it nearly made her smile. Instead she kept her expression cool, professional, with just the faintest edge of promise.
“Then you’re hired. Effective immediately.”
She reached behind her without looking and picked up the employment contract she had already prepared. The paper was thick, expensive. She held it out to him. When he reached to take it their fingers brushed. His were warm. Slightly damp. Hers were cool and steady.
“Read it carefully,” she told him. “Particularly paragraph seven. It covers additional responsibilities at my personal discretion. Most interns pretend not to notice that clause. I expect you to pay very close attention to it.”
Nathan scanned the document. She watched his eyes move across the page, noting the exact moment he reached the carefully worded section. His breath caught. Just barely. But she heard it.
When he looked up again the unspoken dynamic crackled between them like electricity. His cheeks were flushed. His hazel eyes had gone dark. Yet he did not look away. Not this time.
“I understand,” he said quietly.
“Do you?” Sonia allowed a trace of teasing to enter her voice. She leaned forward just enough that her shadow fell across him. “This isn’t a typical internship, Nathan. I don’t tolerate hesitation. I don’t accept half measures. When I give an instruction you will follow it. Immediately. Enthusiastically. And when we are alone you will address me with the respect I’ve earned. Is that clear?”
“Yes, Ms. Sterville.” The honorific sounded different now. Deeper. Almost reverent.
She straightened, satisfied for the moment. “Excellent. You’ll start tomorrow at six thirty. My coffee is a flat white, two shots, oat milk, no sugar. You will have it on my desk before I arrive. My dry cleaning will be waiting in the closet. The code to the executive elevator is 4729. Memorize it. I dislike repeating myself.”
Nathan stood as well. He was taller than she had expected, though still shorter than her in heels. The power imbalance felt perfect. She could see him processing it, feeling the weight of her authority settle over his shoulders like a tailored coat.
“Thank you,” he said. “For the opportunity. I won’t disappoint you.”
Sonia stepped closer, invading his space just enough to make him lift his chin to maintain eye contact. She reached up and adjusted his tie with a single precise movement. Not because it needed adjusting. Because she could.
“See that you don’t,” she murmured. “Good boys are rewarded, Nathan. But only after they’ve proven themselves. I look forward to your proof.”
His sharp inhale was the sweetest sound she had heard all week.
She released his tie and returned to her chair, dismissing him with a graceful wave of her hand. “You may go. Send HR the signed contract before you leave the building. And Nathan?”
He paused at the door, one hand on the handle.
“Yes, Ms. Sterville?”
She smiled then. Slow. Predatory. Possessive.
“Welcome to your new position.”
The door closed behind him with a soft click. Sonia allowed herself one long, satisfied breath. She turned her chair toward the floor-to-ceiling windows and looked out over the city she had spent two decades conquering. Her reflection stared back at her: elegant, controlled, hungry.
She had interviewed seventeen candidates in the past ten days. None of them had triggered that particular instinct in her. The one that whispered mine.
Nathan Cole, with his eager eyes and instinctive deference, had done it within the first five minutes. She thought of the way his gaze had dropped to the floor. The way he had called her ma’am without thinking. The visible struggle not to squirm under the weight of her attention.
Oh yes. He would do nicely.
Already her mind was moving ahead. The small tests she would begin with tomorrow. The way she would slowly tighten the leash. The moment, weeks or perhaps only days from now, when he would first drop to his knees in this very office and look up at her with complete surrender in those hazel eyes.
Sonia’s lips curved. She picked up her fountain pen and began making notes in the margin of his personnel file. Precise, elegant handwriting. Each word a promise.
By the time she finished, the sun had dipped lower, painting the office in warm gold. She closed the file and set it aside with the others.
Tomorrow the real work would begin.
She could hardly wait to break him in.
