The Merger Files

Rebecca Logan commanded the conference room like it belonged to her alone. The sleek glass walls of the fintech firm's twenty-third floor reflected her sharp profile as she leaned forward, her tailored charcoal suit hugging the lines of her athletic frame without a single wrinkle out of place. Her auburn hair sat in a precise chignon, and those piercing green eyes swept over the investors with cool precision. "The Q3 projections show a seventeen percent revenue lift from our new API integrations," she said, voice steady and edged with authority. "Anyone questioning the valuation needs to look at the data again. We are not overextended. We are positioned for acquisition talks on our terms."

She paused just long enough for the silence to settle, letting the three men across the table shift in their seats. One cleared his throat and nodded. Rebecca allowed herself the smallest internal flicker of satisfaction. This was her domain. Numbers bent to her will here, and so did people.

The meeting wrapped with handshakes and murmured agreements. Rebecca collected her tablet and strode out, heels clicking against the polished floor. Her mind already ticked through the next items on her calendar. Merger data still needed scrubbing before the board reviewed it. She had no intention of letting Eddie Carlisle get his hands on anything useful ahead of schedule. The COO was a problem she handled with distance and superior information.

Back in her office, the afternoon light slanted across her desk. Rebecca sank into her chair and opened her email. The first new message sat at the top, sender listed only as an anonymous string of characters. No subject line. She almost deleted it on instinct, but the preview text stopped her finger. It read simply: "You should see this before anyone else does."

She clicked. A video player loaded. The footage was grainy at first, then sharpened into unmistakable clarity. Her own bedroom. The angle suggested a hidden camera. Rebecca watched herself on screen, naked and straddling the married board member, her head thrown back, his hands gripping her hips. The clip cut abruptly to another angle, closer, showing her face in clear detail as she moaned his name. A third clip followed, shorter, edited to highlight the moment she whispered about confidential company information she could share with him later. The video ended with a single line of text overlaid in stark white: "More where this came from. Reply to this address. Do not ignore."

Rebecca's stomach tightened. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, then curled into a fist. She replayed the clips once, checking for any sign of manipulation. They looked authentic. Too authentic. Her private affair, recorded without her knowledge, now reduced to a weaponized file sitting in her inbox. She forced a slow breath. Panic would not help. She needed to trace the source, contain the damage, and decide who could be trusted with even a hint of this.

Her phone buzzed with a calendar reminder she had set earlier. Late meeting. She almost dismissed it until the details loaded. Eddie Carlisle's office. 9:15 p.m. No agenda listed. Rebecca stared at the screen. The timing felt too precise to be coincidence. She closed the email, locked her computer, and spent the remaining hours of the workday moving through meetings on autopilot, her mind circling the video and the man who might already know it existed.

By nine o'clock the executive floor had emptied. Rebecca walked the corridor toward Eddie's corner office, her steps measured. The door stood ajar. She pushed it open without knocking.

Eddie sat behind his desk, salt-and-pepper hair catching the low lamplight. His broad shoulders filled the dark suit jacket, and those cold steel-gray eyes lifted to meet hers with calm expectation. "Close the door, Rebecca."

She did. The click sounded louder than it should have. "You summoned me. I assume this concerns the investor deck I presented today."

"Not exactly." He gestured to the chair across from him. When she remained standing, one corner of his mouth lifted. "Sit. Or stand. Your choice, for now."

Rebecca stayed on her feet. "What do you want, Eddie?"

He turned his monitor toward her. The same video file played again, this time with additional footage she had not seen. Clips of her leaving the board member's hotel room. Screenshots of text messages arranging the next meeting. A still of her accessing the merger files on her laptop while the man slept beside her. Eddie paused the playback. "I have everything. Dates, locations, the full archive. Your devices were not as secure as you believed."

Rebecca's pulse hammered at her throat. She kept her expression neutral. "Blackmail is a clumsy tool. What exactly are you after?"

"The preliminary merger data package. The one you have been guarding for the finance committee. Send it to the address in that email by tomorrow morning. In return, these files stay between us."

She laughed once, short and sharp. "You think I will hand over proprietary information because of a few videos? The board would bury you for this."

"The board would bury you first." Eddie leaned back, fingers steepled. "Your affair is with a married director who sits on the ethics committee. The clips show you trading pillow talk for information. One leak and your reputation collapses. Your career ends. Mine continues without a scratch."

Rebecca felt the weight of the threat settle across her shoulders. Pride warred with the cold calculation of survival. She had built everything on control. Losing it here, even temporarily, tasted bitter. "One delivery," she said. "Then we are done."

"We are never done until I say we are." Eddie's voice stayed smooth, almost conversational. "The data first. Then we discuss the next step. Refuse, and the first clip goes to the entire board by noon tomorrow."

She held his gaze, searching for any crack in his composure. There was none. Rebecca weighed the risks, the timelines, the narrow path that might still let her salvage her position. "Fine," she said at last. "You will have the files by morning. But if you so much as hint at releasing anything, I will burn every bridge you have left in this company."

Eddie smiled, slow and satisfied. "I look forward to your compliance, Rebecca. Lock the door on your way out."

She turned without another word, the click of the latch echoing behind her as she stepped into the empty corridor. The night stretched ahead, and the first fracture in her carefully ordered world had already formed.
