Research and Resolve

Jacinta Fowler pushed through the glass doors of her firm’s downtown office just after eight, the click of her heels echoing against the marble like accusations. The loss still burned in her chest, a raw, humiliating heat that no amount of post-trial strategy talk had cooled. She had dictated every motion, controlled every witness, and still the jury had turned on her. Her tailored black suit felt too tight now, the silk blouse clinging to skin that prickled with leftover adrenaline and something she refused to name.

She dropped her briefcase on the corner of her desk and stood there, breathing hard. Her long dark hair had slipped from its bun during the walk back; a few strands stuck to the side of her neck. The office was mostly empty, the lights dimmed for the cleaning crew. She should have gone straight home. Instead she sank into her chair and pressed her thighs together, the pressure sending an unwanted spark up her spine. The defeat had left her wired, restless, and achingly wet in a way that made her jaw clench.

“Georgia,” she called, voice crisp despite the tremor underneath. Her assistant appeared in the doorway, tablet in hand. “Clear my calendar for tomorrow afternoon. Personal matter. I’ll be unreachable after two.”

Georgia nodded without question, though her dark eyes lingered a second longer than usual. “Of course, Ms. Fowler. Anything else?”

“That’s all.” Jacinta waited until the door clicked shut before letting her shoulders drop. She had lied with the same smooth authority she used in court, and the ease of it only sharpened the throb between her legs. She needed something anonymous. Something that would strip the control away without anyone knowing her name.

By the time she reached her apartment the city lights blurred outside the rain-streaked windows. She poured a glass of scotch she didn’t drink, kicked off her heels, and opened her laptop on the kitchen island. The search began clinical, almost academic: “anonymous adult outlets downtown.” Her fingers hovered, then typed faster, more specific. “gloryhole theater.” The words felt filthy even in her mind. She hit enter anyway.

Results flooded the screen. Most were forums and reviews, grainy photos of dark corridors and plywood partitions. One listing caught her eye, a converted cinema two blocks off the main strip that stayed open until three. Anonymous booths. No cameras. Cash only. She clicked the thread and read stranger after stranger describing quick, faceless encounters. Her breath shortened. She could feel her pulse in her clit, a steady, insistent beat that matched the frustration still humming under her skin.

She stood and paced the length of the kitchen, arms wrapped around herself. This was insane. She was Jacinta Fowler, senior partner, the woman who made opposing counsel sweat. Yet the thought of kneeling in some filthy booth, offering her mouth to whoever pushed through the hole, sent a fresh rush of heat down her thighs. She hated how much she wanted it. She hated that the loss had cracked something open she could no longer seal shut.

Her phone lit up with a work email. She ignored it. Instead she refreshed the theater’s address, memorized the route, and checked the time. Eleven forty. If she left now she could be there before midnight, test the waters, and still be home before anyone noticed. The rational part of her brain listed every risk: reputation, health, the possibility of recognition. The other part, the part that had soaked through her panties during the drive back from court, simply ached.

She changed quickly, trading the power suit for dark jeans and a loose sweater that hid the hard peaks of her nipples. No makeup. Hair down. She looked like any other woman slipping out for a late errand. Before she could second-guess herself she grabbed her keys and locked the door behind her.

The drive downtown felt longer than it should have. Rain tapped the windshield in soft, steady rhythm. Jacinta’s hands gripped the wheel too tightly, her mind cycling through the same arguments. She could turn around at the next light. She could pretend this night never happened. But the memory of the courtroom verdict kept pushing her forward, the sting of public failure demanding a private surrender she could not give herself.

She parked two blocks away under a flickering streetlamp and walked the rest of the distance, collar up against the drizzle. The theater’s neon sign buzzed faintly above a narrow black door. No line, no bouncer, just a small window where she slid folded bills without meeting the attendant’s eyes. Inside, the air smelled of stale popcorn and disinfectant. Dim red bulbs lit a hallway lined with numbered doors.

Jacinta stood at the entrance for a long moment, heart hammering. One step inside and there would be no pretending she had come for anything else. She chose the booth farthest from the entrance, slipped the latch, and closed herself into the small, dark space. The partition in front of her held a smooth, waist-high opening. She stared at it, pulse loud in her ears, and felt the first true tremor of anticipation roll through her body.

She had driven here. She had paid. The decision was already made. All that remained was to wait and see what the night would demand of her next.
