First Contact

Sonja Belmont pushed open the heavy door to the biology lab and let it click shut behind her. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a sterile glow over the rows of black-topped benches and glass-fronted cabinets. She had arrived twenty minutes early, her leather tote bag slung over one shoulder and a stack of printed notes tucked under her arm. The room smelled faintly of formaldehyde and disinfectant, familiar and grounding. She set her coffee down on the central bench, adjusted her glasses, and began arranging the materials with precise movements.

Her dark hair was pulled into its usual tight bun, not a strand out of place. The white button-down blouse she wore was crisp, tucked into slim black trousers that hugged her slender waist and flared just enough at the hips. Professional. Controlled. Exactly how she needed to present herself for this first tutoring session with Kevin Braden.

The door opened again at precisely seven o'clock. Kevin stepped inside, and the air in the lab seemed to shift. He was taller than she remembered from his student file photo, six-two at least, broad-shouldered in a simple black t-shirt that stretched across his chest. His short dark hair was neatly trimmed, and his brown eyes scanned the room with the calm focus of someone used to assessing new terrain. A veteran, the notes had said. Twenty-four. Disciplined. Struggling with the advanced molecular biology section.

"Professor Belmont," he said, voice low and even. He set his backpack on a bench two down from hers.

"It's Sonja. I'm just the TA," she corrected automatically, offering a brief smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Let's get started. I have the syllabus breakdown and the problem sets from last week. Sit where you can see the board clearly."

Kevin pulled out the stool beside her instead of across the bench, his movements economical. He was close enough that she caught the faint scent of soap and something warmer, like worn leather. Sonja cleared her throat and launched into the first concept, pointing at diagrams with her pen. Kevin listened without interrupting, his gaze steady on the material and occasionally on her face. His questions came sharp and direct.

"How does the allosteric regulation actually change the binding affinity here?" he asked, leaning forward. His forearm rested on the bench, muscles shifting under tanned skin. Sonja explained the mechanism, but his proximity made the words feel heavier. She had tutored plenty of students. None of them filled the space like this.

They worked through two problem sets. Kevin absorbed everything quickly, his military precision showing in how he took notes, how he repeated key terms back to her for confirmation. Yet every time he shifted on the stool, his knee brushed the edge of hers. Sonja kept her posture rigid, refusing to acknowledge the small sparks of awareness.

"You mentioned the Krebs cycle earlier," Kevin said after a stretch of silence. "Walk me through the regulation points again. I want to make sure I'm not missing the feedback loops."

She turned toward the whiteboard, marker in hand, and began sketching. Kevin stood to watch over her shoulder. His height forced him to angle his body closer, one hand braced on the bench beside her hip. Sonja felt the warmth of him at her back. Her pulse ticked faster. She finished the diagram and stepped aside quickly, but the sensation lingered.

She reached for her coffee to steady herself. The lid had never been secured properly. In one clumsy motion the cup tipped, dark liquid splashing across the bench and onto the front of her blouse. Sonja froze, a soft curse escaping before she could stop it.

"Shit. Sorry about that," Kevin said immediately. He grabbed a stack of paper towels from the dispenser and moved without hesitation. Before she could protest, he was blotting at the spill on the bench, then turning to the damp patches spreading across her shirt. His hand paused just above her chest, eyes lifting to meet hers.

"May I?" he asked, voice calm but something hotter flickering beneath it.

Sonja nodded once, unable to form words. Kevin pressed the towels gently against the fabric, his knuckles grazing the curve of her breast through the thin cotton. The contact was brief, practical, but her skin flushed hot beneath it. She felt the tightness of her nipples against her bra, an involuntary reaction she hated. Her breath caught. Kevin's eyes stayed on hers, brown and intent, and neither of them looked away for a long second.

The paper towel soaked through. He reached for another, wiping carefully lower, near her waist. Sonja's hands gripped the edge of the bench. She could smell the coffee, the clean scent of his skin, and something else, sharper. Her thighs pressed together under the table. This was ridiculous. She was twenty-nine, a professional, and this was a student. Yet the flicker of heat between her legs refused to fade.

"There," Kevin said, stepping back at last. His gaze dropped briefly to the wet fabric clinging to her, then returned to her face. "That should be better."

Sonja smoothed her blouse with trembling fingers. "Thank you. We should continue." Her voice came out tighter than she intended.

They returned to the notes, but the rhythm had changed. Kevin's questions remained focused, yet Sonja found herself hyper-aware of every shift of his body, every low rumble of approval when he understood a concept. She kept her eyes on the page, but the image of his hand on her shirt replayed in her mind. The lab felt smaller now, the after-hours quiet more intimate.

By the end of the hour her skin still felt warm. She packed her materials with extra care, avoiding his eyes as they said goodnight. Kevin shouldered his bag and paused at the door.

"Same time next week?" he asked.

Sonja nodded. "I'll be here."

Alone again, she pressed a cool hand to her flushed cheek. The attraction was unwanted, unprofessional, and already impossible to ignore. She turned off the lights and left the lab, the memory of his touch following her into the empty hallway.
