Awakening Bite
The forest at dusk wrapped Silver Hollow in a hush of deep blues and fading golds. Selene Velmont stood on the narrow trail, her camera balanced in her hands like an extension of her own pulse. Long waves of dark hair clung to her neck in the damp air. She adjusted the lens, capturing the way the last light bled across the moss-covered trunks and turned the mist into something ethereal. Her athletic frame moved with quiet confidence, legs steady on the uneven ground after years of chasing shots no one else would dare.
Yet tonight her skin prickled with awareness. She lowered the camera and scanned the trees. Nothing moved. No birds called. Only the steady rush of the nearby stream broke the silence. She told herself it was the isolation playing tricks. Freelance work meant long solitary hikes, and she preferred it that way. No one to answer to. No expectations. Still, the feeling of being watched refused to leave. It sat low in her belly, a strange blend of curiosity and warning.
She raised the camera again, framing a twisted oak that looked as if it had stood guard for centuries. The shutter clicked softly. Another shot. Another. The presence grew heavier. Closer. Selene’s breath shortened. She spun toward a thicket of ferns. “Hello?” Her voice sounded too loud in the quiet. No answer came. She laughed at herself, a short, sarcastic sound. “Great. Talking to ghosts now. Mom would love that.”
A low growl rumbled from the shadows.
Selene froze. The sound vibrated through her bones. She took one careful step back. Then another. The camera strap dug into her shoulder as her pulse spiked. From the underbrush exploded a massive wolf. Its fur was patchy and matted, eyes wild with madness. Foam flecked its jaws. This was no ordinary animal. It looked starved for violence.
She had time for one sharp scream before it slammed into her. The impact drove her off the trail and down a short embankment. Pain flared white-hot as teeth sank into her left shoulder. She felt the rip of muscle, the wet heat of her own blood. Claws raked her side, tearing through her hiking jacket like paper. Selene fought on instinct, jamming her elbow into the beast’s throat and kicking hard. It only snarled louder and shook her like a rag doll.
Her mind fractured into bright, jagged pieces. This is how I die. Alone in the woods with a monster. She tasted copper on her tongue. Her green eyes blurred with tears. The wolf released her shoulder only to lunge for her throat. She threw her arm up to protect it. Jaws closed around her forearm instead. Fresh agony detonated. Black spots danced across her vision.
Then a thunderous roar split the air. A second wolf, larger and darker than the first, crashed through the trees like a storm given form. Its coat gleamed charcoal in the dying light. Amber eyes burned with lethal focus. The new wolf collided with the rogue in a tangle of snapping teeth and powerful muscle. The impact shook the ground beneath Selene’s back.
She tried to crawl away but her body refused to obey. Blood pulsed from the bite on her arm and soaked the dirt. The fight raged above her. Growls and yelps tore through the dusk. The rogue lunged again and again, but the dark wolf moved with brutal precision. It feinted left, then drove its shoulder into the rogue’s ribs. A sickening crack echoed. The rogue staggered.
Selene’s vision began to tunnel. The dark wolf turned its massive head toward her. For one suspended second their eyes locked. Something inside her chest answered that gaze, a wild spark she had no name for. Then the wolf moved. It lowered its head to her bleeding arm. She thought it meant to finish her. Instead its hot breath ghosted over her torn skin. Sharp teeth pierced the flesh just above the rogue’s bite. Not tearing. Not feeding. A deliberate, measured bite.
Fire exploded through her veins.
Selene arched off the ground, a strangled cry ripping from her throat. The new bite burned hotter than the first, spreading like liquid lightning into every cell. Her bones felt molten. Her blood screamed. She heard the dark wolf whine low in its throat, almost apologetic, before it turned and drove the rogue away into the trees with a final savage snarl.
Then the world folded in on itself. Pain became everything. Her muscles seized and twisted. She heard her own joints pop and shift with wet, sickening sounds. Fur rippled across her arms in waves. Her scream turned into a howl that rose and fractured into the night. The first shift claimed her completely, dragging her under like a riptide.
She woke to the crackle of a fire and the scent of cedar and smoke. Soft lamplight pressed against her eyelids. Selene lay perfectly still, afraid the agony would return if she moved. Bandages wrapped her shoulder and forearm, tight and surprisingly clean. She was naked beneath a heavy wool blanket, her skin fever-warm. The realization should have terrified her. Instead a strange calm settled over her bones, as if some missing piece had finally clicked into place.
She opened her eyes.
A man sat in a wooden chair beside the stone hearth, elbows on his knees, watching her. He was enormous. Broad shoulders strained against a simple black thermal shirt. Short dark hair framed a face carved from granite. Intense amber eyes locked on hers with a focus that stole the air from her lungs. Subtle scars marked his jaw and collarbone. He looked like danger wrapped in quiet control.
Selene’s heart slammed against her ribs. Not from fear. Something deeper pulled at her, magnetic and undeniable. Her nipples tightened beneath the blanket. Heat coiled low in her belly, slick and sudden. She pressed her thighs together instinctively. What the hell is wrong with me?
“You’re awake,” he said. His voice rolled out low and gravelly, the kind of sound that vibrated straight between her legs. “Good. The worst is over.”
She tried to sit up. Pain flared but dulled quickly, far faster than it should have. “Where am I? What the fuck happened?” Her own voice came out hoarse, but the familiar sarcastic edge steadied her. “And why am I naked in a stranger’s bed?”
The corner of his mouth twitched. Not quite a smile. “My cabin. My bed. You were bleeding out on the mountain. I brought you here.” He rose in one fluid motion. The movement revealed the powerful lines of his body, thighs thick with muscle beneath worn jeans. He crossed to a small table and poured water into a metal cup. Every step radiated command.
Selene watched the play of firelight over his forearms. The pull inside her chest tightened. She wanted to touch him. Wanted him to touch her. The urge was so strong it stole her breath. She forced her gaze to the rough-hewn beams overhead. “There was a wolf. Two wolves. One attacked me. The other…” Memory slammed back. The deliberate bite. The fire in her blood. The way her body had broken and remade itself. “I shifted. I actually shifted. That’s not possible. I’m not… I can’t be.”
He returned to her side and offered the cup. When she reached for it their fingers brushed. Electricity arced up her arm and straight to her core. A soft gasp escaped her before she could stop it. Wetness gathered between her thighs. She could smell it on the air now, sharper senses picking up her own arousal. Mortification burned her cheeks.
Kael’s nostrils flared. His amber eyes darkened. “Drink,” he ordered quietly. The word held weight. Not a suggestion. A command.
She drank. Cool water soothed her raw throat. When the cup was empty he took it back, careful this time not to touch her. She noticed the restraint in the set of his jaw, the way his hands flexed at his sides. He felt it too. Whatever this was.
“My name is Kael Draven,” he said, returning to his chair but sitting forward as if ready to spring up again. “Alpha of the Lunar Pack. You carry dormant shifter blood, Selene Velmont. The rogue’s attack would have killed you. My bite… it woke what was already inside you. I didn’t know until I tasted it in your blood. Ancient lineage. Strong enough to survive the change.”
She stared at him. “You know my name.”
“I’ve scented you on the trails for weeks. Your camera. Your hair. Hard to miss.” His gaze drifted over the blanket where it molded to her breasts. He looked away sharply. “You’re healing faster than any human could. That’s the wolf knitting you back together. By morning the wounds will be scars.”
Selene lifted her bandaged arm. The pain had already faded to a dull throb. Beneath the gauze she felt heat, energy, something alive and pacing just under her skin. She should be screaming. Calling for help. Instead she kept stealing glances at Kael’s mouth, at the strong column of his throat, at the way his chest rose and fell in steady rhythm. Her body ached to press against that chest. To feel his weight. To submit and claim at the same time. The conflicting urges left her dizzy.
“This can’t be real,” she whispered. “I photograph wildlife. I live in a studio apartment with exactly two houseplants I keep forgetting to water. I don’t have some secret werewolf bloodline.”
His low chuckle surprised her. It sounded like distant thunder. “Yet here you are. Naked in my bed with golden flecks in your eyes that weren’t there yesterday.”
Her hand flew to her face. She scrambled for a reflective surface. A small mirror hung near the door. Selene pushed the blanket aside just enough to stand, wrapping it around herself like a towel. Her legs held. Barely. She moved to the mirror on shaky steps.
Her reflection showed the same sharp green eyes, but now threads of molten gold swirled through them. They caught the firelight and flashed. Predatory. Beautiful. Hers. A soft sound of wonder escaped her lips.
Kael had risen again. He stood close behind her, not touching, yet she felt the heat rolling off his big body. The blanket slipped lower on her back. Cool air kissed her spine. His scent wrapped around her, cedar and wild earth and something darker, masculine, unmistakably aroused. Her nipples pebbled painfully tight. Fresh slick pulsed between her folds. She watched in the mirror as a flush crept up her neck.
“Stop looking at me like that,” she breathed, even as her traitorous body leaned toward him.
“Like what?” His voice dropped lower. Commanding. Teasing. “Like you’re mine?”
The word sent a bolt of pure need through her. Selene’s thighs trembled. She gripped the edge of the mirror frame. In the reflection she saw his hands lift, hover inches from her shoulders, then drop again. The restraint cost him. A muscle ticked in his jaw. His amber eyes had gone molten.
“You should rest,” he said roughly. “The first shift takes everything out of you. Tomorrow I’ll explain more. The pack. The bond. What you’re becoming.”
“Bond?” The word slipped out husky. She turned to face him. The blanket gaped at the front, revealing the inner curve of one breast. His gaze dropped there for half a second before he jerked it back to her face. “I feel… drawn to you. Like gravity. It’s making me crazy. Is that part of it?”
Kael exhaled through his nose. “It is. And it will get stronger. But you’ve been through hell tonight. I won’t take advantage of a newly awakened wolf who doesn’t understand what her body is demanding.” His hand lifted anyway. Calloused fingertips brushed a strand of dark hair from her cheek. The contact sizzled. Selene’s lips parted on a silent moan.
She wanted to rise onto her toes and taste his mouth. Wanted those big hands to unwrap the blanket and map every inch of her newly sensitive skin. The images flooded her mind unbidden: his mouth on her throat, his cock sliding thick and hot between her legs, the stretch, the fullness, the claiming.
He stepped back as if he could read every filthy thought. The distance felt like punishment. “Sleep,” he ordered. The alpha timbre in his voice wrapped around her like a leash. “I’ll be on the couch if you need me. Do not try to leave. The wolf inside you is still settling. You won’t like what happens if you fight it.”
Selene returned to the bed on unsteady legs. She climbed beneath the blanket, every nerve ending aware of him moving around the cabin. He banked the fire. Pulled a quilt over the couch. Dimmed the lantern until only embers and moonlight through the window remained.
She lay on her back staring at the ceiling beams. Her shoulder barely hurt now. Instead an restless energy hummed through her limbs. Every breath carried his scent deeper into her lungs. Her clit throbbed in time with her heartbeat. She pressed the heel of her hand against her mound beneath the blanket, seeking relief. The pressure only made it worse.
From the couch Kael’s breathing changed. Deeper. Rougher. He knew exactly what she was doing. The realization should have stopped her. It didn’t. She circled slowly, biting her lip to stay quiet. The magnetic pull toward him intensified until she felt she might crawl across the room and beg him to ease the ache.
His low growl drifted through the darkness. “Selene. Enough.”
The command in his voice tipped her over. A small, shuddering orgasm rolled through her, barely enough to take the edge off. She gasped his name before she could stop herself. The sound hung between them, heavy with promise.
Kael sat up on the couch. Moonlight carved his silhouette in silver and shadow. His hands clenched the quilt as if physically holding himself in place. “Tomorrow,” he said, voice strained with the effort of restraint, “we talk. Then we decide how to handle this bond before it drives us both mad.”
Selene withdrew her hand, cheeks burning, body still humming. She rolled onto her side facing him. The golden flecks in her eyes caught the moonlight. For the first time in her life she did not feel alone. The wolf inside her stretched, content to be near its mate even if the human half was still reeling.
She watched Kael lie back down, every line of his powerful body rigid with control. The tension between them crackled like the dying fire. Selene closed her eyes, but sleep took a long time to claim her. The magnetic pull remained, a living chain linking her to the brooding alpha across the room. Awakening had only just begun.
