The Clinic Door Opens
Emily Thompson pulled her cardigan tighter around her shoulders as Mark parked the car in front of the small brick building. The sign outside read simply Smith Fertility and Wellness in neat gold lettering. Her stomach fluttered with the same nervous energy that had been building all week. Mark had found the place through a coworker, swearing it helped with stress and conception in ways regular doctors never touched. She wanted to believe him. They had been trying for over a year now, and every negative test left her feeling more hollow than the last.
"You sure about this, honey?" Mark asked, turning off the engine. His voice carried that familiar mix of hope and hesitation. "We can still head home if you're not feeling it."
Emily forced a small smile. "No, I'm okay. You said he comes highly recommended. I just... want to relax a little. Maybe that will help things along."
They walked inside together. The waiting room was quiet, all soft lighting and neutral tones. A receptionist glanced up and smiled. "Dr. Smith is ready for you, Mrs. Thompson. Mr. Thompson, you're welcome to wait here or step out for a bit. Sessions usually run about forty-five minutes."
Mark squeezed her hand. "I'll be right out here. Go on in."
Emily nodded and followed the receptionist down a short hallway. The door at the end opened into a spacious office that felt more like a comfortable study than a medical room. Books lined one wall. A large leather chair sat behind a polished desk. And standing beside it was Dr. Joe Smith.
He was taller than she expected, lean in a crisp white coat over a dark shirt. Salt-and-pepper hair framed a face that looked both professional and quietly intense. His dark eyes met hers with a calm steadiness that made her breath catch for a second.
"Mrs. Thompson," he said, voice smooth and low. "I'm glad you came. Please, have a seat."
She settled into the upholstered chair across from his desk. The leather felt cool against her thighs through her modest skirt. Dr. Smith took the seat opposite, folding his hands. "Mark mentioned you're carrying quite a bit of stress. That's very common when couples are trying to conceive. Today is simply about helping your body and mind let go of that tension. Nothing more."
Emily nodded, though her fingers twisted in her lap. "I don't know if hypnosis will really work on me. I've always been a little... wound up."
A faint smile touched his mouth. "Most people say that at first. We'll start very lightly. Just focus on my voice and your breathing. Mark is waiting outside, so you can relax knowing he's close by."
He dimmed the lights with a remote. The room softened into gentle shadows. "Lean back for me. Let your shoulders drop. Good. Now take a slow breath in... and let it out."
Emily did as he said. The first few breaths felt awkward, but his voice kept a steady rhythm that made it easier to follow. "That's it. Notice how your chest rises and falls. Each breath carries a little more of that tightness away. Your arms are growing heavier. Your legs are growing heavier. You're safe here."
She felt her muscles begin to loosen despite herself. The constant knot between her shoulder blades eased. Dr. Smith's words continued, calm and unhurried. "Imagine a warm light starting at the top of your head. It moves slowly down, relaxing every inch it touches. Your forehead smooths. Your jaw loosens. That warmth spreads to your neck, your shoulders, your arms."
The warmth he described began to bloom for real. It started as a faint tingle at her scalp and slid downward like a slow wave. Emily's eyelids grew heavy. She let them close. The sensation surprised her. It wasn't just suggestion anymore. A genuine, liquid heat pooled low in her belly, different from anything she had felt during simple relaxation exercises before.
"Good," Dr. Smith murmured. "You're responding very well. That warmth is your body releasing what it no longer needs. Let it settle wherever it wants. There's no rush."
Emily's breathing deepened. The heat lingered just below her navel, a soft pulsing that made her shift slightly in the chair. She told herself it was only the relaxation. Nothing more. Still, her skin flushed, fair and quick to color, and she hoped the dim light hid it.
"In a moment I'll bring you back," he continued. "When you open your eyes you'll feel calm and refreshed. You'll carry a little of that warmth with you. It will help you sleep better tonight. It will help your body stay open to what you truly want."
The last phrase settled into her mind like a gentle echo. She didn't question it. The trance was light, exactly as promised, but the warmth remained even as he counted her up from five to one.
Emily blinked her eyes open. The room looked the same, yet everything inside her felt quieter. Dr. Smith watched her with that same steady gaze.
"How do you feel?" he asked.
"Different," she admitted, voice softer than usual. "Lighter. Warm."
"That's the beginning. We'll build on it next time if you'd like. For now, take your time getting up."
She stood slowly. Her legs felt steady, but the warmth in her belly lingered like a secret ember. When she stepped back into the waiting room, Mark looked up from his phone with a hopeful smile.
"How was it?" he asked, standing to meet her.
Emily hesitated, then offered a small nod. "It was... relaxing. I think it helped a little already."
Mark's shoulders eased. "See? I told you it might be worth trying. Ready to head home?"
She glanced once toward the closed office door. The warmth inside her pulsed again, faint but insistent. "Yes," she said quietly. "Let's go home."
Outside, the afternoon light felt brighter than before. Emily walked beside her husband, one hand resting lightly over her lower stomach without thinking. The sensation there refused to fade. She told herself it was only the start of something helpful, nothing to worry about. Yet every step carried a quiet, unfamiliar awareness that followed her all the way to the car.
