Classified Intake

Dr. Naomi Herron adjusted the collar of her crisp uniform blouse and settled into the reinforced chair behind her desk. The secure evaluation room hummed with the low thrum of classified equipment. Morning light filtered through the narrow reinforced window, casting sharp lines across the steel table where her tablet lay open. She had reviewed a dozen files already that week, but this one held her attention longer than most.

Captain Martin Staples. Late thirties. Special Forces. Multiple commendations for operations she was not cleared to know the details of. The summary painted a man of iron discipline, unflinching under pressure, the kind of soldier who carried entire units through hell without breaking stride. Notes from previous evaluations flagged him as emotionally reserved, highly functional, and resistant to standard psychological probing. That resistance was exactly why command had cleared him for the experimental tool.

Naomi exhaled slowly, her fingers tracing the edge of the tablet. The device sat dormant on the far end of the table, a sleek headset paired with neural interfaces that looked deceptively simple. One activation and it would bridge their minds at a depth no standard session could reach. She told herself this was just another evaluation, another chance to help a soldier carry less weight. Yet the file photo of Staples, those piercing gray eyes staring straight ahead, stirred something she quickly filed away as professional curiosity.

A knock sounded at the door. Three precise raps.

"Enter," she called, voice steady.

The door opened and Captain Martin Staples stepped inside. He filled the frame with his height and the quiet power of his build. Short dark hair sat regulation-perfect above a tanned face marked by faint scars along the jaw and temple. His uniform fit like it had been tailored to emphasize shoulders and arms that spoke of relentless training. Those gray eyes met hers without hesitation, assessing, then shifting to the room as if cataloging exits.

"Captain Staples," Naomi said, rising. "I'm Dr. Naomi Herron. Thank you for coming in."

"Ma'am." His voice was low, gruff, the single word carrying the weight of years spent giving and taking orders. He moved to the indicated chair across from her and sat with military precision, spine straight, hands resting on his thighs.

She remained standing a moment longer, letting the silence stretch just enough to observe him. No fidgeting. No shifting weight. Only that steady gaze returning to her when she finally took her seat.

"Your file indicates you've completed standard evaluations before," she began, opening the tablet. "This session uses an experimental tool. It allows deeper access to surface cognitive patterns and stress markers. The goal is to identify hidden burdens before they affect performance. Do you have any questions before we begin?"

"Will it hurt?" The question came direct, no hesitation.

"No pain. Some subjects report a sensation of pressure or warmth. You remain in control at all times. You can end the session with a verbal command."

He gave a single nod. "Understood."

Naomi reached for the headset. Her fingers brushed the smooth surface as she lifted it. "I'll place this on you first, then activate the link from my station. We'll start with baseline questions while the tool maps initial responses."

She stood and circled the table. Up close, the faint scent of soap and gun oil clung to him. She adjusted the headset over his short hair, careful not to touch his skin more than necessary. The fit settled perfectly. When she stepped back, his eyes followed her with quiet intensity.

Back at her station, Naomi initiated the link. A soft chime filled the room. The air seemed to thicken as the tool came online, a faint electric tingle brushing the edges of her own awareness. She watched the readouts stabilize.

"Captain Staples, can you confirm the connection?"

"I feel... something," he said. His jaw tightened slightly. "Like someone standing too close."

"That's normal. Focus on your breathing. I'll begin the first probe now."

She guided the tool toward surface-level scans, asking standard intake questions about recent missions, sleep patterns, and unit dynamics. Staples answered in clipped sentences, each one precise. Yet through the link she caught faint echoes, resistance like a steel door gently tested. He did not yield easily. His mind held its lines with the same discipline his body showed in the chair.

Naomi noted the stoic wall in her logs, but something else registered too. A flicker of awareness passed between them, an undercurrent she had not expected on a first probe. His gray eyes stayed locked on hers during the pauses, and she felt the weight of that attention settle low in her chest. Professional. She reminded herself it was professional. Still, the way his shoulders remained squared even under mental pressure stirred an unexpected pull.

"Tell me about the last operation you led," she said, voice calm and authoritative.

Staples's answer came measured, but the tool caught the brief flare of remembered tension, quickly suppressed. His resistance held firm, yet the first thin thread of connection had formed. Naomi adjusted the probe depth slightly and felt the surface tension between them sharpen into something more personal, more charged.

She met his gaze again across the table. For a moment neither spoke. The room seemed smaller, the hum of the tool louder in the space between their minds.

"Continue," she instructed softly.

He obeyed without question, and the session moved forward under that quiet, building awareness.
