The Flagged Paper

Dana Pruitt sat alone in her office with the late afternoon light slanting through the blinds. The stack of final papers sat untouched on the corner of her desk. Only one mattered now. She had already run Brian Holcomb's submission through the department's plagiarism software twice, then compared it line by line with the original source herself. The match was exact in long stretches, the kind of lazy copying that left no room for interpretation. She leaned back in her chair, fingers steepled, and let the evidence settle in her mind like a completed equation.

Her gray eyes moved over the highlighted sections again. No doubt remained. The boy had cheated. Twenty-two years old, senior year, one paper away from his degree, and he had chosen the easiest path. Dana felt no anger, only a clean, precise interest. This was leverage, and leverage was something she understood how to use.

She glanced at the clock. Five forty-seven. She had sent the email two hours earlier, short and formal: "Mr. Holcomb, please come to my office at six. The matter is urgent." He would come. Students always did when their futures were on the line.

Dana stood and crossed to the window, adjusting the blinds so the room felt more enclosed. She smoothed the front of her tailored blouse and checked that her auburn hair remained pinned in its tight bun. Everything in place. She returned to her desk and placed the printed evidence in a neat folder, the original paper beside it. The door was already unlocked. She only had to wait.

At six o'clock exactly, a knock sounded.

"Come in," she said, voice level.

Brian Holcomb stepped inside and closed the door behind him. He wore the usual campus uniform of jeans and a faded T-shirt, shoulders tight beneath the fabric. His short brown hair looked as though he had run a hand through it on the way over. Nervous hazel eyes flicked from her face to the papers on the desk and back again.

"Professor Pruitt," he said. "You wanted to see me about the paper?"

"Sit down, Mr. Holcomb."

He took the chair across from her. His knee bounced once before he forced it still. Dana opened the folder and slid the first page toward him. The highlighted passages glowed under the desk lamp.

"Your final paper matches an article published two years ago in the Journal of Political Theory almost word for word in sections three through five. The software flagged it. I confirmed it myself. Do you have anything to say before we continue?"

Brian stared at the page. Color drained from his face. "I... I didn't mean to. I was behind and I found the article and I thought if I changed a few words..."

"You didn't change enough." Dana's tone stayed even. "This is academic misconduct. The policy is clear. I am required to report it to Dr. Dwyer."

His head snapped up. "Wait. Please. If she sees that, she'll..."

"Revoke your degree. Yes. The committee takes plagiarism seriously, especially in the final semester. You would not graduate. Any graduate school applications would carry the notation. Recommendations would be impossible."

Brian's hands gripped the arms of the chair. "Professor, I can't. My parents already paid for the cap and gown. I have a job lined up. If this gets out..."

Dana watched the panic settle into his features. She let the silence stretch until he looked at her again.

"There is an alternative," she said. "I can handle this privately. No report to Dr. Dwyer. Your transcript remains clean. In exchange, you will follow my instructions without question until I decide the matter is resolved."

He swallowed. "What kind of instructions?"

"Complete compliance. Whatever I require of you in this office or elsewhere on campus. You will not refuse. You will not negotiate. You will not tell anyone. If you break any of those terms, the file goes to the chair the same day."

Brian pushed back from the desk an inch. "You're serious. You're actually saying..."

"I am offering you a choice, Mr. Holcomb. Report and lose everything, or accept my terms and keep your degree. Choose."

He stood up, then sat again. One hand dragged through his hair. "This is blackmail. I could report you."

"You could. And I would show Dr. Dwyer the evidence first. Your word against a tenured professor with documented proof. Think about how that ends."

The fight left his shoulders in a single visible drop. He looked at the floor, then at the door, then back at the papers. "What do you want me to do?"

Dana rose and walked around the desk. She stopped in front of him, close enough that he had to tilt his head to meet her eyes. "First, lock the door. Then come back and stand here."

Brian hesitated. His breathing had gone shallow. She waited, perfectly still, until he pushed himself up and crossed to the door. The lock clicked. He returned and stood where she had indicated, hands loose at his sides, eyes fixed on a point just past her shoulder.

"Good," she said. "From now on, when I give an instruction, you follow it immediately. No questions. No delays. Do you understand?"

"Yes," he whispered.

"Yes, Professor," she corrected.

"Yes, Professor."

Dana studied him for a long moment, noting the tension in his jaw, the way his fingers twitched. The first crack had formed. She felt the quiet satisfaction of a plan settling into motion.

"You may go," she said. "Be here tomorrow at five. We will discuss the next step."

Brian nodded once, turned, and left. The door closed softly behind him. Dana returned to her chair and closed the folder. Outside, the campus lights were beginning to glow. She allowed herself one small, private smile before she began to pack her things.
