Sweat and Memories
Clementine Johnson stepped through the glass doors of Iron Edge Gym and the cool rush of conditioned air washed over her flushed skin. The place smelled like new rubber mats and fresh paint, with a faint undercurrent of sweat that made her stomach tighten. She had only come to take a quick look, maybe grab a brochure, but her feet stopped dead the moment her eyes landed on the man behind the front desk.
Joel Lucas. Six-foot-three of broad shoulders and thick arms, the same dark stubble along his jaw that she remembered from high school hallways. He wore a fitted black tank that clung to every ridge of muscle, and when he looked up from the clipboard in his hands, those intense eyes locked onto hers like they had never left.
Her breath caught. Ten years had not softened the sharp line of his jaw or the way he carried himself, like the room already belonged to him. Old memories slammed into her: the way he used to smirk when he called her "Clementine" in front of everyone, the casual shoulder checks in the cafeteria, the low comments that made her cheeks burn. She had hated him. She had also spent too many nights wondering what it would feel like if he ever touched her on purpose.
"Well, well," Joel said, voice low and rough like gravel under boots. "Clementine Johnson. Didn't think I'd see you walking through my doors."
Clementine forced her legs to move, though every step felt heavier than the last. "Joel. I... didn't know this was your place."
He leaned forward on the desk, forearms flexing. "Opened last month. Rival to that little boutique spot you used to teach at, right? Figured the neighborhood could use something with real weight on the bars." His gaze dragged over her ponytail, the fitted tank and leggings she had thrown on without thinking, and lingered a beat too long on the curve of her hips. "You look good. Still running those spin classes?"
She swallowed, skin prickling under the attention. "Not as much. Life got busy."
The bell above the door chimed behind her and Donovan's familiar hand settled at the small of her back. "Hey, sorry, parking was a nightmare. You already checking it out?" Her husband stepped up beside her, soft middle pressing against his tucked-in button-down, tired eyes blinking behind his glasses. He offered Joel a polite smile. "Donovan Johnson. This is my wife Clementine. We saw the opening banner and thought we'd peek inside."
Joel's mouth curved, not quite a smile. "Donovan. Nice to meet you." He straightened, towering over both of them. "Clementine and I go way back. High school rivals, you could say."
Donovan chuckled, oblivious. "Small world. She's been talking about getting back into a real routine. Her old gym closed down last year and she's been stuck doing YouTube videos in the living room."
Clementine shot her husband a quick look, heat creeping up her neck. "Donovan, it's fine. I don't need..."
"You should sign up," Donovan said, squeezing her waist gently. "Doctor said your blood pressure's creeping up again. A few sessions a week would do you good. And this place looks serious. Real equipment."
Joel's dark eyes flicked between them, something unreadable passing across his face before it settled into that old cocky tilt. "Private sessions are my specialty now. I could show you around if you're serious. No pressure."
Clementine opened her mouth to decline, but Donovan was already nodding. "That would be great. She's competitive. She'll stick with it if someone pushes her."
Joel came around the desk, his presence filling the narrow hallway as he gestured toward the main floor. "Follow me. Let's see what kind of shape you're really in these days, Clementine."
The nickname landed like a spark against dry tinder. Clementine's pulse jumped. She fell into step behind him, Donovan trailing a few feet back, and tried to ignore the way Joel's shoulders shifted with every stride. The gym was bright and open, rows of racks gleaming under LED lights, but all she could focus on was the low timbre of his voice as he pointed out the free-weight area.
"You used to hate leg day," Joel said over his shoulder, voice pitched just for her. "Still got those dancer legs or did marriage soften you up?"
She bristled, but the flush spreading across her fair skin betrayed her. "I still run. Three miles most mornings."
"We'll see." He stopped at a squat rack and turned, eyes dropping to her thighs for a fraction of a second before meeting her gaze again. "Form's everything. I don't let clients cheat. Think you can handle that?"
The air between them felt thicker, charged with the same tension that had crackled through every hallway encounter years ago. Clementine's fingers curled at her sides. She could feel Donovan watching, harmless and encouraging, while the man who once made her life hell studied her like he already knew exactly how she would break under his hands.
"I can handle whatever you throw at me," she said, voice steadier than she felt.
Joel's grin was slow, predatory. "We'll find out soon enough. First session tomorrow at six. Don't be late."
She nodded once, heart hammering, and turned to find Donovan already pulling out his wallet to pay for the membership. Behind her, Joel's gaze stayed heavy on her back, and for the first time in years Clementine felt the sharp, dangerous pull of something she had spent a decade pretending she didn't want.
