Festival Arrival
The harbor glowed under strings of paper lanterns that swayed in the salt breeze, their warm light reflecting off the water like scattered stars. Mireya Ashley stepped off the ferry ramp with Wilbur at her side, the wooden planks creaking beneath their feet as the crowd surged around them. Music from a nearby stage pulsed through the air, a lively mix of fiddles and drums that made the whole festival feel alive.
"Look at this place," Wilbur said, his voice steady and warm as he slipped an arm around her waist. "They really went all out this year."
Mireya smiled, adjusting the strap of her canvas bag on her shoulder. The scent of grilled seafood and fried dough mingled with the ocean air, and for a moment the familiar tightness in her chest eased. "It feels good to be out here," she admitted. "Away from the lab for once."
They wove through the throng, past vendors hawking shell necklaces and harbor maps. Wilbur bought two plastic cups of local ale from a stall, handing one to her with a grin. "To the festival," he toasted, clinking his cup against hers.
Mireya took a sip, the bitter tang spreading across her tongue. Laughter bubbled up between them as they found a spot near the railing, watching boats bob in the slips below. The evening light painted everything in soft golds and oranges, and for a while they shared stories from their week, his work on the new breakwater project, her latest plankton samples. It felt easy, like old times.
But as the crowd thinned around them, a quiet settled in. Mireya traced the rim of her cup with one finger, her green eyes drifting over the water. "Sometimes I wonder if we're just going through the motions," she said softly, not quite meeting his gaze. "The same routines, the same nights at home. I love you, Wilbur, but it feels like something's missing lately."
Wilbur exhaled, leaning on the rail. His brown eyes held that calm steadiness she knew so well. "I know what you mean. We've talked about it before. The open part of our marriage, how it could bring some spark back. But we've never really acted on it."
Mireya nodded, the words hanging between them. It wasn't an argument, just the truth they'd circled for months. She felt a flicker of guilt mixed with something else, a restless curiosity she couldn't name yet.
The music swelled again, pulling them back into the flow. They finished their drinks and moved toward the main dock where the festival lights shone brightest. Mireya's athletic frame moved easily through the press of bodies, her auburn hair catching the glow as she scanned the scene with her usual scientific curiosity.
That was when she noticed him.
Nikolai Poole stood at the edge of the dock, one boot propped on a mooring post, his tall frame unmistakable even in the dim light. Sun-weathered skin stretched over broad shoulders, and the short beard along his jaw caught the lantern glow. His piercing blue eyes met hers across the space, and a slow, confident smile curved his mouth. Tattoos curled along his forearms as he lifted a hand in an easy wave.
Mireya's pulse quickened for reasons she couldn't quite place. She nudged Wilbur. "That sailor over there looks like he belongs on one of those boats. Adventurous type."
Wilbur followed her glance and chuckled. "Go say hello. Marine life is your thing, remember?"
She hesitated only a second before stepping forward. Nikolai pushed off the post and met her halfway, his gravelly voice carrying over the music. "Evening. You look like you've got questions about the water."
"Mireya Ashley," she said, offering her hand. His grip was firm, callused from rope and salt. "Marine biologist. I couldn't help noticing your boat. Is that a research vessel or just for pleasure?"
"Nikolai Poole. Pleasure mostly, though I do some charters. The name's Harbor's Edge. She gets me where I need to go." His eyes held hers a beat longer than necessary. "You study the sea around here?"
They fell into light conversation, Mireya describing her work with local currents and plankton blooms while Nikolai listened with genuine interest, his teasing undertones surfacing in quick remarks about "scientists who get their hands dirty." Flirtatious glances passed between them, his blue eyes dipping to her freckled cheeks before returning to her face. She felt a spark of curiosity ignite, something adventurous in his energy that pulled at her.
Wilbur lingered nearby, watching with a quiet smile that held more than simple politeness. When Nikolai mentioned the festival's late-night dock walks, Mireya laughed, the sound lighter than it had been all evening. The hint of something more hung in the air, unspoken but present, as the lanterns swayed overhead and the harbor lights danced on the waves.
Nikolai tipped his head toward the music. "Stick around if you want. Plenty of stories out here after dark."
Mireya met his gaze again, the restlessness inside her shifting into something warmer. "Maybe I will."
