The Hiring

Naomi Syns stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of her penthouse, the city lights blurring beneath a veil of unshed tears. The envelope had arrived by courier an hour ago, its plain white surface hiding the poison inside. She read the message for the third time, her fingers steady despite the ice sliding down her spine.

"You die next. Just like Daddy."

The words were typed in stark black ink. No signature. No demands. Only the promise of violence tied directly to the murder that had shattered her world six weeks earlier. Her father had not simply died. He had been executed in his own garage, two bullets to the chest, the killer vanishing without a trace. Now the threat had found her.

She set the letter down on the marble console table and exhaled slowly. Grief still clung to her like a second skin, but beneath it burned something sharper. Anger. Resolve. She would not wait for them to come for her. She would build a wall of muscle, skill, and absolute loyalty around herself. And she knew exactly who to call.

By the time the private elevator chimed, Naomi had composed herself. Her auburn hair fell in a sleek curtain down her back. The emerald-green silk blouse she wore clung to her curves with tailored precision, the neckline modest yet hinting at the soft swell of her breasts. A black pencil skirt and Louboutins completed the armor. She looked every inch the tech heiress. Inside, her pulse hammered with a confusing blend of fear and anticipation.

The doors slid open. Three men stepped into her home, each one dominating the space in his own way. She let her gaze travel over them deliberately, assessing, measuring. Her body reacted before her mind could catch up. Heat pooled low in her belly, unexpected and unwelcome. Not now, she told herself. This is business.

The first man moved like a predator who had learned to stand still. Tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair cropped close and intense brown eyes that locked onto hers without hesitation. Olive skin stretched over disciplined muscle. Kade Torres. His dossier had been impressive. Former special forces. Zero tolerance for failure. When he spoke, his voice was low and commanding.

"Miss Syns. I'm Kade. These are Levi Cross and Rafe Malone. You called for the best. You got us."

Naomi offered her hand, noting how his fingers engulfed hers completely. His grip was firm but not crushing. Professional. Yet something in the way his thumb brushed the inside of her wrist sent a spark racing up her arm. She pulled back a fraction too slowly, catching the brief flicker in his eyes. He had felt it too.

"Thank you for coming on short notice," she said, her tone polished steel. "The threat is credible. Linked to my father's murder. I won't be a sitting target."

Levi stepped forward next, a contrast in every way. Lean and athletic, messy blond hair that looked like he had run his hands through it moments ago. Wire-rimmed glasses framed sharp blue eyes that sparkled with intelligence and something far more playful. His smile tilted at one corner, sarcastic and charming at once.

"Levi Cross, resident tech wizard and occasional pain in the ass," he said, extending his hand. "I've already swept your building's security on the way up. You've got three back doors that wouldn't stop a determined hamster. We'll fix that."

His fingers were long and clever. When they closed around hers, Naomi imagined them flying over keyboards or tracing patterns across bare skin. She blinked the thought away. His gaze lingered on her face a beat longer than necessary, as if he were already trying to decode her. The subtle power shift felt electric. She was the one who paid the bills, yet his quick mind seemed to strip her defenses with a single glance.

Rafe Malone filled the remaining space like a storm cloud. Late thirties, shaved head, rugged jaw shadowed with stubble. Green eyes burned beneath a heavy brow. Tattoos snaked from beneath the cuffs of his black button-down, disappearing under the fabric that strained across a powerfully built chest. His presence was raw, almost feral, yet when he looked at her, the aggression in his posture softened by a fraction.

"Rafe," he growled, voice deep and blunt. He did not offer his hand immediately. Instead he scanned the penthouse, cataloging exits, sight lines, vulnerabilities. Only then did he turn that gaze fully on her. "Nobody gets to you without going through me. That's not a promise. That's a fact."

His hand finally closed around hers. Calluses scraped her palm. The sheer size of him made her feel delicate, something she rarely allowed herself to feel. Arousal flickered again, darker this time. She pictured those tattooed arms caging her in, that growly voice murmuring filthy instructions. Naomi lifted her chin, refusing to let the flush climbing her neck show.

"Gentlemen, let's sit. I want to know exactly who I'm trusting with my life."

She led them to the open living area where four leather chairs surrounded a low glass table. Naomi took the position of power naturally, back to the windows, forcing them to face both her and the glittering drop behind her. Kade sat directly opposite, posture ramrod straight. Levi slouched with deceptive casualness, already pulling a slim tablet from his bag. Rafe chose the seat closest to the entrance, body angled to guard the only approach.

She liked that. They moved like a unit already, even though they had only just met her.

"The police have nothing on my father's killer," she began, crossing her legs. The slit in her skirt revealed a sliver of thigh. She noticed Kade's eyes dip there for half a second before returning to her face. Good. "I received that letter today. The same phrasing used in the note left at his crime scene. This isn't random. Someone wants Syns Tech. Or they want me silenced before I can dig deeper into the classified contracts my father was reviewing before he died."

Levi tapped his tablet. "I've pulled the preliminary reports. Your father's secure server was wiped the night he was killed. Amateur work on the surface. I can recover most of it. Give me forty-eight hours and I'll know what he was looking at."

"You'll have whatever you need," Naomi said. She studied him. Behind the playful wit she sensed a man who had spent too many nights alone with machines. His blue eyes met hers again, holding the contact. The tension stretched, humming. She wondered what it would take to make that clever mouth obey her without sarcasm.

Kade leaned forward, elbows on his knees. The movement stretched his shirt across his chest, outlining muscle earned through years of combat. "My team operates on three principles. One, we control the environment. Two, we control the information. Three, we control the response. You will not like all of it. You hired us because we're the best, not because we're convenient."

His voice wrapped around her like dark velvet. She felt the command in it, the absolute confidence. Her pulse quickened. In her mind she saw herself stepping close to him, placing one finger against that firm mouth and telling him exactly how she expected to be protected. The image startled her with its intensity.

"I appreciate directness, Kade. But let's be clear. This is my life. My company. My rules. I will not be locked in this penthouse like a princess in a tower. I have board meetings. I have investigations to run. You will adapt to me as much as I adapt to you."

Rafe's low chuckle rumbled across the table. "Little thing like you giving orders to us. I like it."

The words should have annoyed her. Instead they sent liquid heat sliding through her veins. She met his green eyes and held them, letting him see the steel beneath her elegant exterior. "Six foot five of tattooed muscle doesn't intimidate me, Rafe. It reassures me. But if you think I'm fragile, you'll be disappointed."

Something shifted in his expression. Respect. Hunger. The power dynamic crackled between them, invisible but potent. He inclined his shaved head a fraction, acknowledging her authority even as his massive frame promised raw physical protection.

Levi broke the moment with a soft laugh. "She's got you both pegged already. This is going to be fun." He adjusted his glasses, but the gesture did nothing to hide the way his gaze traced the line of her throat. "For the record, I work best with direct access. That means I need to be close. Very close. Late nights. Early mornings. You might get tired of my charming personality."

"I doubt that," Naomi murmured before she could stop herself. His eyebrows rose, and she saw the spark of interest flare hotter. She cleared her throat. "Tell me about your backgrounds. I read the files, but I want to hear it from you."

Kade went first, as she expected. "Twelve years special forces. Led extraction teams in places that don't exist on maps. Left when the bureaucracy became more dangerous than the enemy. I protect what matters now. No exceptions. No failures."

His intensity wrapped around her. She imagined him standing between her and a bullet without hesitation. The thought made her thighs press together beneath the table. He noticed the small movement. His nostrils flared slightly. The chemistry was already spiraling beyond professional, and they had been in the same room for less than twenty minutes.

Levi took over, spinning his tablet so she could see a holographic display of encrypted data streams. "I used to work black-bag operations for a certain three-letter agency. They didn't like how many questions I asked. Now I ask them for people who pay better and don't try to disappear me when I find uncomfortable answers. I can make this entire building invisible to anyone who isn't us. I can also make sure your father's encrypted drives sing like choirboys."

His playful tone didn't hide the sharp mind beneath. Naomi found herself smiling despite the gravity of the situation. When he grinned back, the expression transformed his face from merely attractive to devastating. She wanted to know what that mouth would feel like whispering filthy code against her ear while his hands worked elsewhere.

Rafe spoke last, his voice a low scrape of gravel. "Street first, then military, then private contractor. I've broken a lot of things in my life. People included. But I protect what's mine. You become mine to protect, nothing gets close enough to bruise you. Not while I'm breathing."

The blunt declaration should have sounded arrogant. Instead it settled inside her like a vow. She studied the tattoos visible at his collar, the way his shoulders filled the chair. Raw power. Controlled violence. She wondered how that aggression would translate if she ever invited him to use it on her in entirely different ways. The thought sent a fresh wave of warmth through her body.

She stood, needing to move, to reclaim the upper hand. The men rose with her, a synchronized wave of muscle and intent. Naomi walked to the wet bar and poured four glasses of water, buying time to steady her breathing. When she turned back, all three were watching her. Different expressions, same underlying heat.

Kade's stare was steady, assessing, already planning how to keep her alive. Levi's was bright with curiosity and flirtation. Rafe's burned with protective possession that went far beyond the job description.

She handed each man his glass, letting her fingers brush theirs deliberately. First Kade. The brief contact sent electricity dancing across her skin. Then Levi, whose clever fingers lingered a heartbeat too long. Finally Rafe, whose massive hand made hers look fragile. Each touch felt like a promise she had not yet spoken aloud.

"I won't pretend this is only about security," she said, voice calm even as her heart raced. "The three of you come highly recommended as a unit. Complementary skills. Unbreakable loyalty once bought. I am buying that loyalty tonight. Triple your usual rate. Full access to every system, every property, every detail of my life. In return, you keep me breathing while I find the bastard who took my father."

She set her glass down and met each pair of eyes in turn.

"But understand this. I am not a client who hides in the corner. I will push. I will question. I will demand. If you can't handle a woman who knows her own mind, walk out now. No hard feelings."

None of them moved. The air grew thick with unspoken possibilities. Kade's jaw tightened, but his eyes gleamed with respect. Levi's smirk deepened into something hotter. Rafe simply nodded once, as if he had already accepted whatever she might demand of him.

"Good," Naomi said softly. "Then you're hired. All three of you. Welcome to my life, gentlemen. I hope you can keep up."

Kade stepped closer, close enough that she caught the clean scent of his skin, something dark and woody. "We don't keep up, Miss Syns. We set the pace. But we'll adjust it for you." His voice dropped. "Until you tell us otherwise."

The subtle offer in those words sent her stomach flipping. She held his gaze, letting him see the flicker of dominance that lived beneath her grief and fear. "Careful, Kade. I might just take you up on that."

Levi laughed under his breath. "This is going to be the best job we've ever taken. I can already tell."

Rafe's green eyes never left her face. "Whatever you need, Naomi. Say the word."

She felt the shift settle into place, irrevocable. The threat against her life was real. The danger was closing in. But standing in her penthouse surrounded by these three powerful, dangerous men, Naomi Syns felt something else awaken inside her. Not just survival. Not just justice.

Desire. Control. The first electric threads of ownership.

She smiled, slow and deliberate, the heiress transforming into something sharper, hungrier, right before their eyes.

"Then let's get to work. The sooner we start, the sooner I can stop looking over my shoulder. And the sooner we can explore exactly what this arrangement is going to look like."

As the three men moved to set up their equipment around her home, Naomi allowed herself one quiet, internal admission. She wanted more than their protection. She wanted their devotion. Their bodies. Their complete surrender.

And she always got what she wanted.
