The shoulder of the highway stretched out in front of them like a dirty ribbon, the last orange light of dusk bleeding into purple along the horizon. Trent leaned against the passenger door of Travis's dead Civic, the metal still warm from the engine that had given out twenty miles back. The smell of hot asphalt and dry grass filled his lungs. He tried not to dwell on how far they still had to go.
"My mom's coming," Travis said, phone pressed to his ear. He paced in tight circles, kicking at gravel. "She's already on her way. Said she'll be here in about forty minutes."
Trent nodded. He'd met Travis's mom exactly once, during freshman move-in. A quick handshake and a warm smile, then she was gone, back to whatever trucking route she was running. That was two years ago. He barely remembered her.
"She's pissed about the car," Travis added, shoving his phone into his pocket. "But she said she'd get us to the next town. We can figure out the Civic tomorrow."
"It's fine," Trent said. "Thanks for calling her."
Travis waved it off. "What else was I gonna do? We were stuck."
The minutes crawled and the sky darkened. Cars rushed past, headlights cutting through the gloom, none of them stopping. Trent watched the traffic and tried not to dwell on the three-day drive ahead, the cramped back seat of whatever vehicle Joanne was bringing, the awkward small talk with a woman he barely knew.
When the black SUV finally pulled up behind them, Trent felt a strange mix of relief and dread.
It was a clean, late-model Tahoe with tinted windows and chrome rims. The driver's door opened before the engine fully died, and Joanne Greenwood stepped out into the cooling air.
Trent's breath caught in his throat.
She wasn't how he remembered her. Not even close.
The woman from freshman move-in had been wearing a company polo and jeans, her hair pulled back tight, her face tired from a long shift. This woman was something else entirely. She wore cut-off denim shorts that rode high on her thighs, the frayed edges brushing against tanned, muscular legs. A soft gray tank top hugged her torso, loose enough to hint at the curves beneath but tight enough to show the strong line of her shoulders and the confident set of her spine. Her dark hair was down, falling past her shoulders in waves, and her face was relaxed, almost amused, as she walked toward them.
She was beautiful. Not in a polite, distant way. In a way that made Trent's mouth go dry.
"Hey, baby," she said, pulling Travis into a quick hug. Her voice was lower than he remembered, a warm contralto with a hint of rasp. "You two look pathetic out here."
"The car just died, Mom. What was I supposed to do?"
"Call a tow truck instead of your mother?" She laughed, a rich sound that carried in the open air. Then her eyes shifted to Trent.
He felt the weight of her gaze like a physical thing. It traveled from his face down to his shoes and back up again, slow and deliberate. There was nothing shy about it. Nothing motherly. It was the look of a woman appraising a man.
"You must be Trent," she said, extending her hand.
He took it. Her grip was firm, her palm calloused in a way that surprised him. "Yes, ma'am. Thanks for coming to get us."
"Ma'am." She smiled, and there was something knowing in it, something that made his stomach tighten. "I like that. You can call me Joanne, though. Ma'am makes me feel old."
"You don't look old," he said, before he could stop himself.
The words hung in the air. Travis groaned. "Dude, don't be weird."
But Joanne's smile widened. Her eyes held his a beat longer than necessary. "It's okay, Trav. Your friend's just polite." She turned back to the SUV. "Come on. Let's get your stuff loaded and get out of here."
They moved the bags from the Civic's trunk into the Tahoe's cargo area. Trent grabbed his duffel and backpack, trying not to watch the way Joanne's shorts rode up when she bent to adjust something in the back. He failed. The curve of her hamstrings, the tan line just visible at the edge of the denim. He looked away, his face hot.
"Trent, you take the front," Joanne said, slamming the rear hatch. "I want company. Travis, you can sleep in the back like the good son you are."
"I'm not tired," Travis said.
"You will be. It's a long drive."
Trent hesitated. "I can sit in the back. I don't mind."
"I mind." Joanne opened the passenger door and gestured. "Get in. I don't bite."
Travis laughed. "She bites. Trust me."
"Only when they deserve it." Joanne's eyes flicked to Trent, and there was a glint in them that made his pulse hammer. "Get in, Trent."
He got in.
The front seat was clean, the leather warm from the evening sun. He buckled his seatbelt as Joanne slid into the driver's seat, the engine rumbling to life. The cabin smelled like her. Something floral and clean, with an undertone of coffee and the faint, pleasant musk of skin.
Travis sprawled across the back seat, his phone already out. "You got a charger, Mom?"
"Glove compartment."
Travis leaned forward, rummaged through the glove box, and found a cable. He plugged in his phone, then settled back with a sigh. "Wake me when we get there."
"That's the plan, baby."
Within ten minutes, Travis was asleep. His breathing evened out, slow and deep, and his phone slipped from his hand onto the seat beside him.
The highway stretched ahead, dark and empty. The Tahoe's headlights cut twin cones of white into the night. Trent stared out the window, watching the mile markers slide past, hyperaware of the woman beside him.
"So," Joanne said, her voice lower now, meant just for him. "Tell me about yourself, Trent. Travis talks about you all the time, but I don't really know you."
"There's not much to know," he said. "I'm a junior. Computer science major. I run track."
"Track." She said it like she was tasting the word. "That explains the legs."
He glanced at her, startled. She was watching the road, a small smile playing at the corner of her mouth.
"What about you?" he asked, trying to regain his footing. "Travis said you're a truck dispatcher?"
"Twenty years now. Started right out of high school." She shifted in her seat, and her thigh brushed against his. It was brief, almost accidental. Almost. "I know every rest stop between here and the coast. Every motel that doesn't ask questions. Every diner that serves real coffee."
"Sounds like you've spent a lot of time on the road."
"I have." She glanced at him. "You learn things out here. How to read people. How to pass the time." A pause. "How to appreciate good company when you find it."
Trent's throat tightened. He wasn't imagining this. He couldn't be.
"Travis says you don't date much," she continued. "Too focused on school."
"I guess so."
"That's smart. Focus is important." She reached for the radio, her hand brushing his knee as she did. "Sorry. Just adjusting the volume."
His skin burned where she'd touched him.
"But you can't focus all the time," she added, settling back. "You have to let loose sometimes. Find someone who knows what they're doing and let them show you things."
He turned to look at her. She was staring straight ahead, but her smile was there, soft and knowing.
"What kind of things?" he asked.
Her laugh was low, almost a purr. "That depends on how curious you are."
The air in the cabin felt thick. Trent's hands were sweating, and he pressed them against his jeans, trying to steady himself. Travis was still asleep in the back, completely oblivious.
"I'm curious," Trent said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Joanne's eyes cut to him, dark and warm in the dim light of the dashboard. "Good," she said. "I like curious boys."
She reached over and rested her hand on his thigh. Just for a second. Just long enough for him to feel the heat of her palm through the denim. Then she pulled it back, returning both hands to the wheel.
"We've got three days," she said. "Plenty of time for conversation."
Trent's heart was pounding. He stared out the windshield, watching the road disappear beneath them, and tried to remember how to breathe.
He had a feeling this trip was going to change everything.
The silence stretched between them, filled only by the hum of tires on asphalt and Travis's soft snoring from the back seat. Joanne adjusted her mirrors, and Trent caught the way her bicep flexed with the movement, the tank top straining briefly against her chest. He looked away too late. She'd seen him looking.
"You're quiet," she said.
"Just tired, I guess."
"Mmm." She tilted her head, considering him. "You're not good at lying, Trent. Your ears turn red."
He reached up involuntarily, touching his ear. She laughed, that rich, throaty sound again.
"Relax. I'm not going to make you uncomfortable." A pause. "Unless you want me to."
He swallowed hard. "I don't... I mean..."
"Shh." Her voice dropped even lower. "You don't have to answer that. Not yet."
The highway signs blurred past. They'd crossed into the next county somewhere, the landscape flattening into farmland, the lights of civilization growing sparser. Joanne drove with one hand on the wheel, the other resting on the center console. Her fingers tapped a slow rhythm against the leather, and Trent found himself watching them. Short, clean nails. A thin silver ring on her index finger. Calluses that spoke of years gripping steering wheels and loading docks.
"Tell me something," she said. "Do you have a girlfriend back at school?"
"No."
"Boyfriend?"
"No."
"Nobody waiting for you?"
"No." His voice cracked slightly on the word.
Joanne smiled. "Good. That makes this easier."
"Makes what easier?"
She didn't answer right away. Instead, she reached over and took his hand from where it rested on his thigh. Her fingers laced through his, her palm warm and rough against his. She held it there, on the console between them, and stroked her thumb across his knuckles.
"This," she said. "Whatever this is going to be."
Trent's mouth opened, but no sound came out. He could feel his heartbeat in his temples, in his wrists, in the pit of his stomach. Her hand was so much smaller than his, but her grip was sure. Confident. Like she'd done this before. Like she'd done this with boys like him before.
"You're shaking," she observed.
"I'm not."
"You are." She squeezed his hand. "It's okay. I like that."
"You like that I'm nervous?"
"I like that I'm the one making you nervous." She glanced at him, and in the green glow of the dashboard, her eyes were dark pools. "There's a difference."
He didn't know what to say to that. So he said nothing. He just sat there, his hand in hers, and let the heat of her skin seep into him.
They drove in silence for another mile. Then another. The farmland gave way to dense trees, the road curving through hills that blocked out the sky. Joanne's thumb kept moving across his knuckles, slow and deliberate, and each pass sent a little jolt up his arm.
"There's a rest stop coming up," she said. "I need to stretch my legs. You want to come?"
"Sure."
"Travis," she called over her shoulder. "Baby, we're stopping for a minute."
No response. Just the steady rhythm of deep breathing.
"Out cold," Joanne murmured. "Good."
She pulled off at the next exit, the headlights sweeping across an empty parking lot bordered by trees. There was a single streetlight at the far end, casting a pale circle on the pavement. No other cars. No trucks. Just them and the night.
Joanne killed the engine and opened her door. The night air rushed in, cool and sweet with the smell of pine. She stepped out and stretched, her arms above her head, her tank top riding up to reveal a strip of flat, tanned stomach. Trent watched from the passenger side, his hand still warm from hers.
"You coming?" she asked, not looking back.
He got out. The gravel crunched under his shoes. He walked around the front of the Tahoe, and she was standing at the edge of the tree line, looking out into the darkness. The streetlight caught the curve of her hip, the line of her jaw. She was stunning.
"It's beautiful out here," she said. "No city lights. Just stars."
He came to stand beside her. She was right. The sky was thick with them, more than he'd seen in years. The Milky Way stretched overhead like a smear of spilled milk.
"I forget what it looks like," he said. "Living on campus, you never see this."
"Mmm." She turned to face him. They were close. Close enough that he could smell her again, that floral musk mixed with the night air. "You know what I like about rest stops like this?"
"What?"
"Nobody comes here. Not this late." She reached up and touched his face, her fingers tracing his jawline. "We won't be disturbed."
Trent's breath hitched. "Joanne..."
"Shh." She stepped closer, her body almost touching his. He could feel the heat radiating off her skin. "Don't overthink it, Trent. Don't overthink us."
"Travis is right there."
"Travis sleeps like the dead. Always has." Her hand slid from his jaw to the back of his neck, her fingers curling into the short hair at his nape. "I've been driving for three hours thinking about this. About you. About what I'd do if I ever got you alone."
"What would you do?"
She smiled, slow and dangerous. "I'd start by kissing you. Right here. Right now."
She didn't wait for him to respond. She rose onto her toes and pressed her lips to his.
The kiss was soft at first, a question more than a demand. Her mouth was warm, tasting faintly of coffee and something sweeter. Trent's hands hung at his sides, frozen, unsure. Then her tongue traced the seam of his lips, and he opened to her with a groan he couldn't hold back.
She deepened the kiss immediately, her tongue sliding against his, her hand tightening in his hair. Her other hand found his hip and pulled him closer, closing the last inch between them. He felt her breasts against his chest, soft and full through the thin cotton of her tank top. He felt the hard press of her nipples, and his cock stirred in his jeans.
She must have felt it too. She pressed her hips into his, a slow roll that made him gasp against her mouth. Her hand slid from his hip to his ass, squeezing, pulling him tighter against her.
"There you go," she whispered against his lips. "That's what I wanted."
"Joanne, we can't..."
"We can." She kissed the corner of his mouth, then his jaw, then the sensitive spot below his ear. "We are."
Her hand came around to the front of his jeans, and she palmed him through the denim. He was hard now, fully hard, and her fingers traced the length of him with a slow, knowing touch.
"Oh, Trent," she breathed. "You've been hiding something, haven't you?"
"I haven't... I'm not..."
"Shh." She stroked him through the fabric, her grip firm. "Let me."
He couldn't stop her. He didn't want to stop her. His hands finally moved, landing on her waist, pulling her closer. She moaned softly, a sound that went straight to his groin, and her strokes grew more deliberate.
"Not here," she said suddenly, pulling back. Her eyes were dark, her lips swollen. "In the car. I want room."
She took his hand and led him back to the Tahoe. She opened the rear door on the driver's side, glancing at Travis's sleeping form on the other side of the back seat. He hadn't moved. His phone glowed on the seat beside him, the screen dark.
Joanne folded the third-row seats down, creating a flat space in the cargo area. She climbed in and pulled Trent after her, closing the door behind them and plunging them into near-darkness.
The cargo area was cramped but enough. The windows were tinted, and the only light came from the distant streetlight filtering through the trees. Joanne lay back on the carpeted floor, pulling him over her. Her legs wrapped around his hips, and she pulled him down into another kiss.
This one was different. Hungrier. Her hands roamed his back, his sides, his ass. She pulled his t-shirt free from his jeans and slid her hands underneath, her palms flat against his skin. He shuddered at the contact.
"You feel good," she murmured. "Strong. I like strong."
"You feel good too." His voice was rough, barely recognizable.
"Yeah?" She smiled against his mouth. "What do you like?"
He answered by kissing her again, harder this time, and letting his hands explore. He traced the curve of her waist, the flare of her hips. When he reached the hem of her tank top, she arched her back, and he pulled it up, baring her stomach, then her ribs, then her breasts.
She wasn't wearing a bra.
Her breasts were full and heavy, soft in the dim light, her nipples dark and already hard. He cupped one, feeling the weight of it, and she let out a shaky breath.
"Yes," she whispered. "Touch me."
He bent his head and took her nipple into his mouth. She gasped, her fingers tangling in his hair, holding him against her. He sucked and licked, circling the peak with his tongue, then switched to the other breast. Her back arched off the floor, and her hips ground against his.
"God, Trent." Her voice was ragged. "You're good at that."
He didn't know if he was. He'd done this before, a few times, with girls at school. But none of them had responded like this. None of them had made him feel like every touch mattered.
Her hands found his belt. The buckle clinked in the silence, loud as a gunshot, and he tensed. She paused.
"Travis," he said.
"Is fine." She unbuttoned his jeans. "He's out. Trust me."
She reached into his jeans and wrapped her hand around his cock. He groaned, dropping his forehead to her shoulder. Her grip was firm, her fingers not quite meeting around his shaft. She stroked him slowly, her thumb circling the head, spreading the slickness that had gathered there.
"You're big," she said, her voice full of wonder. "Bigger than I expected."
"Is that good?"
"It's very good." She stroked him again, harder. "I'm going to need a minute to get ready for this."
She pushed at his chest, and he rolled onto his back. She sat up and shimmied out of her shorts, revealing a pair of simple black panties that clung to her curves. She straddled him, her knees on either side of his hips, and ground herself against his cock through the thin fabric of her underwear.
She was wet. He could feel it, soaking through the cotton, slicking his shaft. He gripped her hips, his fingers digging into the soft flesh of her ass, and pulled her harder against him.
"Oh fuck," she breathed. "You feel amazing."
"So do you."
She sat up and pulled her tank top over her head, tossing it aside. In the dim light, her body was all curves and shadows. She reached behind her and unhooked something, then her breasts fell free, heavy and full. She leaned forward, letting them brush against his chest, and kissed him.
"I want you inside me," she whispered. "Right now."
"Do you have..."
"Glove box. Front seat. But I have some in my bag too." She reached behind her, rummaging in a bag she'd stashed in the cargo area, and produced a small foil packet. She tore it open with her teeth and rolled the condom down his length with practiced ease. "There."
She slid her panties to the side and positioned him at her entrance. She was hot and slick, and as she lowered herself onto him, they both groaned. She was tight, impossibly tight, and she took him inch by inch, her body opening to accommodate him.
"Oh God," she gasped, when he was fully inside her. "Oh, Trent."
He couldn't speak. He could only grip her hips and try not to come right then and there. She felt incredible, wet and tight and hot, her walls fluttering around him as she adjusted to his size.
She started to move. Slow at first, a gentle rocking that let him feel every inch of her. Then faster, her hips rolling, her breasts swaying with each movement. He reached up and cupped them, thumbing her nipples, and she moaned, her head falling back.
"Yes," she hissed. "Just like that. Don't stop."
He didn't stop. He thrust up into her, meeting her rhythm, and she cried out, then bit her lip to stifle the sound. Her nails dug into his chest, leaving little crescents, and her movements grew more urgent.
"I'm close," she gasped. "I'm so close."
He could feel it. Her walls were clenching around him, rhythmic and desperate. He sat up, wrapping his arms around her, and took a nipple into his mouth. She shattered.
Her orgasm hit her like a wave, her body convulsing around him, her back arching, her mouth open in a silent scream. He held her through it, feeling every tremor, every pulse. When she finally went limp against him, he was still hard inside her.
"Your turn," she whispered, and rolled off him.
She got onto her hands and knees, presenting herself to him. Her ass was round and full, her thighs slick with her arousal. He positioned himself behind her and slid in, deep and hard, and they both groaned.
He fucked her. There was no other word for it. He grabbed her hips and thrust into her, over and over, chasing his own release. She pushed back against him, meeting every thrust, her moans muffled by her arm.
"Harder," she gasped. "Give it to me harder."
He did. He pounded into her, the sound of their bodies slapping together filling the cargo area. He could feel his orgasm building, a tight coil in his lower belly, and he gritted his teeth, trying to hold on.
"Come for me, Trent," she said. "Come inside me."
He let go. His orgasm crashed through him, and he buried himself deep inside her, groaning her name. She clenched around him, milking every last drop, and he collapsed against her back, both of them panting.
They lay there for a long moment, tangled together in the dim light. Finally, he pulled out, and she helped him remove the condom, tying it off and tucking it into a bag she produced from somewhere.
"Evidence," she said with a wink.
They dressed in silence, moving quietly so as not to wake Travis. When they were both decent, Joanne opened the cargo door, and the night air rushed in, cool and refreshing. Trent felt dizzy, his legs unsteady.
Joanne kissed him softly. "We should get back on the road."
"Yeah."
"Three days, Trent." She smiled, that knowing smile. "Three days and two nights. Plenty of time for more of this."
He didn't know what to say. So he just nodded and climbed back into the front seat.
The engine started, and the Tahoe pulled back onto the highway. Travis was still asleep, oblivious. Joanne reached over and took Trent's hand again, lacing her fingers through his.
"This is going to be a good trip," she said.
