The Welcome Home
Jeff Mitchell stepped off the plane with the weight of two tours still pressing on his shoulders, his duffel bag slung across his back like it belonged there. The airport terminal hummed with the usual chaos of arrivals, but all he could think about was Claire waiting at home. His wife. His anchor. He had pictured this moment a thousand times during deployment, the way her body would fit against his, the soft sound she made when he pulled her close. Exhaustion pulled at him, but eagerness pushed him forward through the crowd toward the exit.
The cab ride home felt longer than it should have, the city lights blurring past the window while Jeff replayed every letter she had sent. She had sounded happy, excited even, in her emails. Something about her job and new friends, but nothing specific. He smiled to himself. Claire always had a way of making things sound playful. He adjusted his jacket, feeling the faded scars beneath his shirt, reminders of a life he was ready to set aside for her.
When the cab pulled up to their modest house, Jeff paid the driver and grabbed his bag. The porch light glowed warm against the evening chill. He unlocked the door and stepped inside, the familiar scent of lavender and vanilla hitting him immediately. Home.
"Jeff?" Claire's voice came from the living room, bright and welcoming. She appeared in the doorway a second later, her long blonde hair loose over her shoulders, blue eyes sparkling. She wore a simple black dress that hugged her curves, the hem just short enough to draw his gaze. "You're really here."
She crossed the room in quick steps and threw her arms around him. Jeff dropped his bag and held her tight, breathing her in. Her body pressed against his chest, soft and warm, and for a moment the exhaustion faded.
"Missed you so damn much," he murmured against her hair.
Claire pulled back just enough to kiss him, her lips soft and lingering. When she drew away, she smiled up at him. "There's someone I want you to meet. Karina stopped by to help with the welcome. She's your new boss too, actually. Small world, right?"
Jeff blinked, caught off guard. Karina. He followed Claire into the living room and saw the other woman standing by the couch. She was striking, tall with dark hair pulled into a tight ponytail, sharp features softened by a confident smile. Athletic build, curvaceous in a fitted blouse and slacks. She extended a hand.
"Karina Belmore. Good to finally meet you in person, Jeff. Claire's told me all about you."
Her grip was firm, authoritative without being aggressive. Jeff shook it, noting the way her eyes flicked over him, assessing. "Nice to meet you too. Didn't expect my boss to be here on my first night back."
Karina laughed lightly. "I was in the neighborhood. Claire and I have gotten close while you were gone. Figured I'd help make the homecoming special."
Claire moved to the kitchen counter where a bottle of champagne sat chilling. She popped it open with a practiced hand, pouring three glasses. "Let's toast. To Jeff coming home safe."
They clinked glasses. The champagne was crisp, bubbles tickling Jeff's throat as he drank. Claire settled beside him on the couch, her hand resting on his thigh. Karina took the armchair across from them, legs crossed, watching with an easy smile.
"You look even better than the photos," Karina said, her tone light but direct. "Military training did you good. That build is impressive."
Jeff felt heat creep up his neck. Compliments on his physique usually came from drill sergeants, not his wife's friend and new boss. "Thanks. Kept up with the routine out there."
Claire squeezed his leg. "He's always been disciplined like that. Strong. Reliable."
The conversation flowed easily at first, catching up on small things. Claire talked about her work, how Karina had helped her adjust to some new projects. Karina mentioned the civilian job waiting for Jeff, something in logistics under her supervision. It felt friendly, a triangle that shouldn't have fit but somehow did in the moment. Champagne flowed, glasses refilled. Subtle flirting threaded through, compliments on Jeff's arms, his shoulders, the way his shirt stretched across his chest.
"You must be exhausted," Claire said after a while, leaning into him. "But I'm glad you're here. We both are."
Karina nodded. "Claire's been counting down the days. She really missed you."
Jeff relaxed into the couch, the alcohol loosening the tight coil of deployment tension. Claire's hand stayed on his thigh, warm and steady. Karina's gaze lingered a beat too long, but it felt harmless, part of the welcome.
Claire stood and moved to the entertainment center. "I was thinking we could watch something light. Just to unwind." She glanced at Karina, a quick exchange of looks that Jeff almost missed. Knowing. Coordinated.
"Something different," Karina added. "Claire mentioned you two used to joke around with random videos. Thought this might be fun as a joke tonight."
The screen flickered on. Jeff expected a comedy or some old movie. Instead, two men appeared, athletic and bare, their bodies moving together in a way that left no doubt. The video was explicit, focused on the way one man took the other, sounds of skin and breath filling the room.
Jeff's stomach tightened. Confusion hit first. Why this? Claire knew his tastes, or at least he thought she did. It was supposed to be a joke, Karina had said. He forced a chuckle, trying to play along. "Okay, that's... unexpected."
Claire sat back down, closer now. "Just messing around. Karina thought it might be funny to see your reaction after all that time away. You know, loosen things up."
Karina smiled from her chair, eyes on him. "No pressure. We can change it if you want."
But they didn't. The video continued, the men shifting positions, one on his knees now. Jeff's body reacted before his mind could sort it out. A low thrum of arousal stirred, unwanted and confusing. He shifted on the couch, hoping it wasn't obvious. His mind flashed back to Claire's letters, her excitement. This was part of that? He felt heat in his face, a mix of embarrassment and something else he couldn't name.
Claire's hand moved higher on his thigh. "You're quiet. What do you think?"
"It's... different," Jeff managed. His voice stayed steady, military training holding the line. Inside, thoughts tangled. Why did this feel like it was testing something? Karina watched him closely, and Claire's expression held a spark he hadn't seen before. They exchanged another glance, subtle but loaded.
The video played a little longer. Jeff's pulse picked up despite himself. The men's bodies were strong, similar to his own in some ways, and the way one submitted under the other's touch pulled at something deep. He pushed the feeling down. This was a joke. Just a joke.
Eventually Claire turned it off. "Enough of that. You must be ready to crash."
Jeff nodded, grateful for the out. "Yeah. Long day."
Karina stood, smoothing her blouse. "I'll head out. Welcome home, Jeff. We'll talk more about the job soon."
Claire walked her to the door. Jeff caught the low murmur of their voices, another shared look before Karina left. When Claire returned, she took his hand and led him toward the bedroom.
"You okay?" she asked softly.
"Just tired," he said. The arousal lingered, confusing him further. He stripped down to his shorts and climbed into bed, the familiar sheets cool against his skin. Claire joined him, curling against his side.
Jeff closed his eyes, but the images from the video lingered. Confusion mixed with that unexpected spark of heat. He told himself it was nothing, just the champagne and the long trip home. Claire's breathing evened out beside him. Tomorrow would be normal. It had to be.
Yet as sleep pulled at him, the women's knowing glances replayed in his mind. An alliance he hadn't expected. Something had shifted tonight, light as the bubbles in the champagne, but present all the same.
