The Pad
The key turned easier than it should have. Caesar Ferreira pushed the door open and stepped into the smell of rosemary and something baking. He set his lunch bag on the counter and loosened his tie. The house was quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator and the soft tick of the wall clock.
He didn't mean to go to the pantry first. He meant to call out for Judy, to ask what was for dinner, to do the normal things a man did when he came home. But his feet carried him past the kitchen table and around the corner to the narrow door with the brass knob.
The pantry was dim. Canned goods lined the shelves in neat rows. A half-empty bottle of rye sat on the counter next to a clean glass. And there it was. The pad.
It was a simple spiral notebook, the kind you bought for a quarter at the drugstore. The cover was smudged from handling. A pen lay across the top line. Caesar's hand moved before he told it to. He picked up the pad and opened to the current page.
Corey's handwriting was bold and slanted. She always pressed hard enough to leave grooves in the paper below. She had written just one line today.
One finger of rye. Judy's mouth. I want to know what it sounds like when she tells the truth.
Caesar read it three times before he realized he was holding his breath. The words sat in his chest like a stone dropped into still water. He knew Corey came by sometimes. He knew she used the honor bar. Judy had mentioned it in passing, the way you mentioned the weather or what the mailman brought. But she had never said what Corey wrote.
"Did you find it?"
Judy's voice came from the kitchen doorway. Caesar turned. She was wiping her hands on a dish towel, her dark hair pinned back the way she always wore it. Her housedress was simple blue cotton. She looked like she had looked every evening for the past eight years.
"I wasn't snooping," Caesar said. "I just came in and saw it."
"I know." Judy walked toward him. She didn't take the pad from his hands. She stood close enough that he could smell the onions on her fingers. "Read it to me."
"What?"
"Read what she wrote. Out loud."
Caesar looked down at the page. The words blurred for a moment. He cleared his throat.
"One finger of rye. Judy's mouth. I want to know what it sounds like when she tells the truth."
His voice came out flat and strange. He heard the words as if someone else had spoken them. Judy nodded slowly.
"Again," she said.
"One finger of rye. Judy's mouth. I want to know what it sounds like when she tells the truth."
"Good." Judy reached past him and took the pad. She set it back on the counter exactly where it had been. Then she took his hand and placed it on her hip. Her body was warm through the thin cotton. "Do you know why she writes more than she pours?"
Caesar shook his head. His mouth was dry.
"Because she's honest." Judy's voice was low and patient, the same voice she used when she explained something important. "She pours her rye and she writes what she wants. That's the system. You take what you need and you write the truth about it."
"She wrote about your mouth."
"I know."
"She wants to know what it sounds like when you tell the truth."
"I know that too." Judy's hand covered his, pressing his palm flat against her hip bone. "Do you want to know what it sounds like?"
Caesar's throat tightened. He nodded.
Judy leaned in close. Her lips brushed his ear. "It sounds like this. I like that she wrote it and I like that you read it. But mostly I like that your hand is shaking right now."
His hand was shaking. He hadn't noticed until she named it.
"Corey comes by three times a week," Judy continued. "She pours her rye and she writes what she sees. Last week she wrote about your shoulders. The week before, she wrote about the way I laugh when you tell a bad joke. She's been building a picture of us. Of this house. Of what she wants."
"What does she want?"
Judy pulled back and looked at him. Her eyes were steady and dark. "She wants to find out if I tell the truth the same way in private that I do in public. She wants to know if the woman who runs the honor bar is the same woman who sleeps next to you at night."
"Is she?"
"That's the question, isn't it?" Judy's hand slid from his and dropped to her side. "I've been writing back to her. On the same line. She writes what she looked at and I write what I'm willing to show."
Caesar's heart was beating too fast. He could feel it in his temples, in his throat, in the place where his trousers pulled tight. He tried to shift his weight without making it obvious.
Judy noticed. Of course she noticed. She always noticed.
"You're hard," she said. Not a question. A statement. She said it the way she said the roast was done or the mail had come.
Caesar's face burned. "Judy."
"That's not an accusation. It's an observation." She reached down and touched his hip, not his cock, just his hip, but the proximity made him flinch. "You read her words and you got hard. That's a fact. We don't lie in this house. That's the rule."
"I'm not lying."
"You're not telling the truth either." Judy's hand moved to his belt buckle. Her fingers rested there, light and warm, and he felt the metal shift against his stomach. "Tell me what you felt when you read it."
"I don't know."
"Yes you do."
Caesar closed his eyes. The pantry light was yellow and warm through his eyelids. He could smell the rye and the onions and the clean cotton of Judy's dress.
"I felt caught," he said.
"Caught how?"
"Like I was supposed to be somewhere else. Like I wasn't supposed to see it."
"But you did see it. And you're still here." Judy's fingers traced the edge of his belt. Then they found the buckle and worked it loose with a quiet clicking sound. "What else?"
"I felt curious."
"About what?"
"About what you would say. About what she would do next." Caesar opened his eyes. Judy was watching him with that steady look she got when she was paying complete attention. "About what happens when a woman writes about your wife's mouth and your wife doesn't get angry."
"Why would I get angry?"
"Because it's intimate. Because she's talking about you like she has a right to you."
"She does have a right to me." Judy said it simply, like she was explaining the rules of a game. "She poured her rye. She wrote the truth. That gives her a claim on my attention. That's how the honor system works."
Caesar's breath caught. "She has a claim on you?"
"For the length of the line. For the price of the pour." Judy smiled, a small private smile that made his stomach flip. "I write back on the same line. I tell her what I'm thinking. I tell her what I might be willing to do."
She pulled the belt free from its loops in one smooth motion and set it on the counter beside the pad. Caesar's trousers loosened. He felt the fabric shift against his erection and his face burned hotter.
"What have you told her?"
"That's between me and the pad." Judy stepped back. She picked up the notebook and held it out to him. "You want to know? Read it. She wrote her line. I wrote mine underneath. That's the record."
Caesar took the pad. His hands were still shaking. He opened to the current page and saw Corey's line at the top. Below it, in Judy's neat cursive, was a reply.
I tell the truth best when my husband is watching. Come by tomorrow. Bring your own glass.
Caesar read it twice. The words rearranged themselves in his mind. Judy was watching him from the doorway, her arms crossed, her expression unreadable.
"She's coming tomorrow?"
"If she wants to."
"To do what?"
"To find out what my truth sounds like." Judy tilted her head. "You'll be home. You'll be in the kitchen. You'll read the pad when you get in. That's your job, Caesar. That's what I need from you."
"What do you need from me?"
Judy walked back to him. She took the pad from his hands and set it down. Then she took his face in her hands and kissed him, slow and deep, the way she kissed him when they were alone and the door was locked.
Her tongue found his and he tasted the rosemary from whatever she'd been baking. Her body pressed against him and he felt the heat of her through the thin cotton dress. His cock strained against his trousers and she pressed her hip into it, deliberate and firm, and he groaned into her mouth.
"I need you to keep reading," she said against his lips. Her hand dropped from his face to his waist. Her fingers found the button of his trousers and worked it open. "I need you to keep feeling caught."
She unzipped him. Her hand slipped inside and found him through his underwear, hot and rigid. She wrapped her fingers around the shape of him and squeezed gently.
"I need you to stay hard and confused and honest," she said. Her thumb traced the length of him through the cotton. "Can you do that?"
Caesar nodded. His voice was gone.
Judy pulled back from the kiss but kept her hand where it was. She looked down at what she held and her expression was calm, appraising, the same look she gave a cut of meat at the butcher shop or a fabric at the dry goods store. She pulled the waistband of his underwear down and freed him.
He was fully hard, flushed and heavy in her hand. She wrapped her fingers around the shaft and held him. The pantry air was cool against his skin. The wall clock ticked in the kitchen. Somewhere a car passed on the street outside.
"This is what happens," Judy said. She moved her hand slowly, a single stroke from base to tip and back again. "A woman writes about your wife's mouth. Your wife reads it. Your wife tells you the truth. And you get like this."
Another stroke. Her grip was firm and knowing. She had done this a thousand times but never like this, never in the pantry with the pad open on the counter and another woman's words still hanging in the air.
"Judy," he said. His voice was a croak.
"Tell me what you felt when you read it. The real truth this time."
He closed his eyes. Her hand moved on him, slow and relentless. "I felt like she could see us. Like she was standing in the kitchen watching us and I didn't know."
"She is watching us. She's been watching us for weeks through the pad." Judy's thumb circled the head of his cock, spreading the moisture that had gathered there. "What else?"
"I felt like you belonged to her. For that one line. For the price of the pour." His hips moved without his permission, pushing into her hand. "I felt like I was watching it happen and I couldn't stop it and I didn't want to."
"Good." Judy increased the pace of her hand. Her grip tightened. "That's the truth. That's what I needed to hear."
She kissed him again, her mouth open and hungry. Her tongue moved against his in the same rhythm as her hand. He gripped the counter edge with both hands and let her work him. The pad sat inches from his hip, Corey's bold handwriting and Judy's neat cursive side by side on the same page.
He came with a groan he tried to swallow. His whole body tightened and then released in a long shuddering wave. Judy kept her hand on him through it, milking him slow and steady, until he was spent and softening and the pantry smelled like rye and rosemary and salt.
She let go of him and stepped back. She reached for the dish towel she'd left on the counter and wiped her hand with the same practical motion she used for everything. Caesar tucked himself back into his trousers with fingers that still trembled.
"Good." Judy patted his chest and turned back toward the kitchen. "Dinner in twenty minutes. Wash your hands."
He stood in the pantry doorway and watched her walk away. The pad sat on the counter, innocent and waiting. He could still feel the shape of her handwriting under his fingers. He could still hear Corey's bold slanted words echoing in his skull.
I want to know what it sounds like when she tells the truth.
So did he. And tomorrow, he would find out.
