The First Session
Katrina Whitlock shoved her apartment door open with her hip, the canvas tote bag full of returned books digging into her shoulder. The hallway light buzzed overhead like an angry insect. She was only twenty-six but tonight she felt closer to fifty. Eight hours of shushing undergraduates, reshelving volumes no one ever checked out, and pretending she was not drowning in the constant low-level anxiety that clung to her like static.
She kicked off her plain black flats, flexed her aching toes against the worn carpet, and let out a long breath. The apartment was quiet except for the faint thump of bass from the floor above. Daren, the football player, was probably blasting music again. Katrina told herself the noise did not bother her. It was easier than admitting the deep, rhythmic throb sometimes made her press her thighs together under her conservative skirt.
She dropped her bag on the tiny kitchen table and peeled off her cardigan. The blouse beneath was buttoned nearly to her throat. Modest. Professional. Safe. That was Katrina Whitlock: petite, brunette, glasses perched on a small nose, modest breasts, narrow hips, and a mind that never shut up. Tonight the noise in her head was louder than usual. Deadlines, overdue fines, the creeping fear that she would always be invisible.
Her phone buzzed. Another targeted ad. She usually swiped it away, but the headline caught her.
“Struggling with anxiety? Try Serenity Spiral. Free. First session in under five minutes. Feel calm. Feel beautiful. Feel free.”
Katrina snorted. “Beautiful. Sure.” Still, her thumb hovered. The app icon showed a soft pink spiral pulsing gently. It looked harmless. She had tried breathing exercises, herbal tea, even that terrible guided meditation podcast with the breathy woman who kept saying “namaste.” Nothing worked. Her shoulders felt carved from stone.
“One try,” she muttered. “If it’s stupid I delete it.”
She downloaded the app. The progress bar filled with a silky sweep of color. When it finished, the screen bloomed into that same spiral, slow and inviting. A soft female voice flowed from the speaker.
“Welcome, Katrina. Let’s melt the tension away. Find a comfortable place. Dim the lights. Lie down. Keep your eyes on the spiral.”
She hesitated only a moment before carrying the phone into the bedroom. The space was small and neat, books stacked everywhere, a plain beige comforter on the bed. She drew the curtains, clicked off the overhead light, and left only the bedside lamp glowing low. Then she stretched out on her back, propped the phone against a pillow, and stared at the screen.
The spiral began to turn.
At first it was gentle, lazy whorls of lavender and rose that expanded and contracted like breathing. The voice guided her.
“Inhale slowly… two… three… four. Hold. Exhale… two… three… four. Good. Let your eyelids grow heavy but do not close them. Watch the spiral. Let it pull you deeper.”
Katrina’s chest rose and fell. The apartment seemed to recede. The thump of Daren’s music upstairs synced with the pulse of the spiral. She felt ridiculous, yet her body obeyed. Her arms grew heavy. Her legs sank into the mattress. The voice dropped to a velvety whisper.
“Deeper now. Every turn of the spiral softens your thoughts. Every pulse empties your worries. You deserve to feel good. You deserve to feel desired.”
Katrina’s brow twitched. Desired? That was an odd thing for a relaxation app to say. But the spiral spun faster, colors shifting to deeper pinks and warm golds. Tiny flashes appeared at the edges of the screen, too quick to read. She thought she saw the word “pretty” flicker by. Then “soft.” Then something that looked like “lips.”
Her mouth tingled.
She licked her lips without thinking. They felt warmer than usual. The sensation spread, a gentle heat that slid down her throat and settled low in her belly. The voice continued.
“Let your body relax completely. Feel every muscle release. Your lips are full and sensitive. Your skin is awake. Your thoughts can drift away. Empty head, happy heart. Good girls let go.”
Katrina’s breath hitched. Good girls? That sounded wrong. But the spiral was so pretty, so perfectly timed to the blood beating in her ears. She could not look away. Heat gathered between her legs, a slow, silky ache she had not felt in months. Her nipples tightened against the cotton of her bra. She told herself it was only the power of suggestion. Nothing more.
Time loosened. Minutes or hours slid past while the spiral spun. The hidden flashes came quicker. “Curves.” “Attention.” “Cock.” Each one landed like a drop of ink in clear water, spreading too faintly for her conscious mind to catch. Yet her body heard. Her hips gave a tiny, unconscious roll. A soft sound escaped her throat, almost a whimper.
The voice grew intimate, almost affectionate.
“You are safe here. You are becoming exactly what you were always meant to be. When you wake you will crave this feeling again. You will want to dress a little prettier. You will notice your lips first. So full. So fuckable. Crave this. Need this. Return tomorrow.”
The spiral flared bright pink, then faded to black. The voice said, “Session complete. Sleep deeply, pretty girl.”
Katrina blinked hard. The room swam back into focus. Her body felt loose and warm, as if she had taken a long bath. Between her thighs her panties were unmistakably damp. She sat up slowly, cheeks burning, and pressed her hands to her face. The app icon now showed a tiny pulsing heart. She closed it without reading the aftercare text.
“That was… intense,” she whispered. Her voice sounded huskier than usual. She shook her head, changed into an oversized sleep shirt, and crawled under the covers. The moment her head touched the pillow she dropped into a deep, dreamless sleep.
Sunlight spilled across her face the next morning. Katrina groaned and rolled over, reaching for her glasses. The moment she sat up she felt it. Something was different.
She padded barefoot to the bathroom and flicked on the light. When she looked in the mirror she froze.
Her lips.
They had always been a soft, unremarkable pink. Now they looked plump, almost bee-stung, the kind of lips women paid surgeons to create. She touched them with trembling fingertips. They felt tender, hypersensitive. A spark of heat shot straight down to her core at the simple brush of skin on skin.
“What the hell?” she breathed.
She leaned closer. The change was subtle but undeniable. Her mouth looked poutier, more inviting. The sight sent an unfamiliar flutter through her stomach. For one dizzy second she imagined a man’s thumb running across that new fullness, pressing inside. She jerked back from the mirror, heart hammering.
Strange new urges uncoiled inside her like lazy cats waking up. She was aware of her breasts brushing against the loose fabric of her sleep shirt. Aware of the smooth skin of her thighs. Aware that her clit felt swollen and needy even though she had done nothing at all. She squeezed her legs together and tried to ignore the rush of wetness that followed.
“It’s just hormones,” she told her reflection. “Or placebo. Definitely placebo.”
But the longer she stared, the less convincing her own voice sounded. She kept touching her lips, tracing their new curve. Each pass made her breath shallower. She imagined someone noticing them. Staring. Wanting.
She shook herself and returned to the bedroom to dress for work. Normally she reached for her high-necked blouse and knee-length pencil skirt. Today her hand paused over the hangers. Tucked behind her usual armor was a simple V-neck top she had bought on clearance two years ago and never worn. The neckline dipped lower than anything in her regular rotation. She told herself it was because the blouse was soft and the morning already felt warm.
She slipped it on.
The fabric hugged her modest chest more closely than she remembered. When she looked down she could see the faint shadow of cleavage she had never possessed before. Not much, but enough to make her pause. Enough to send another pulse of that new, slippery heat through her belly.
Katrina bit her plump lower lip and felt the jolt all the way to her toes.
“Just one button more,” she whispered. “It’s nothing.”
She left the top button undone. In the mirror the effect was small but shocking. She looked softer. Prettier. The kind of woman men might glance at twice. The thought should have embarrassed her. Instead it made her nipples tighten into aching points.
She slipped on a cardigan anyway. Old habits. But she did not button it. As she gathered her things for the library her eyes kept drifting back to her phone. The Serenity Spiral icon waited on the home screen, pulsing gently, patiently.
Katrina swallowed. Her new lips felt slick and warm. The damp ache between her legs had not faded. She told herself she was only imagining the way her hips swayed a little more when she walked to the door.
She was definitely not going to open the app again tonight.
Even as she thought it, the lie tasted sweet on her newly full lips. The spiral was already waiting inside her mind, turning slowly, promising relief and something far more dangerous.
Katrina stepped out into the hallway and locked her door. Upstairs the bass started again. She paused, listening to the heavy rhythm, and felt an unfamiliar curiosity stir. What would it feel like if Daren looked at her mouth the way she had looked at it in the mirror?
She shook her head hard and hurried down the stairs, cardigan flapping open just enough to reveal the soft hint of cleavage she had never dared show before. The first crack in her careful armor had already begun to spread, and the app had only just started its work.
