The Safety Briefing

Skylar stepped onto the warm sand, the tropical sun already kissing her skin as she adjusted the straps of her sundress. John walked a few paces ahead, his easy laugh carrying over the gentle crash of waves. The resort's private beach stretched out in perfect turquoise invitation, and for the first time in months she felt the tight coil of routine loosen just a little. Her yoga-toned legs carried her forward, but her mind lingered on the quiet dissatisfaction that had followed them from home.

A tall figure in red swim trunks approached from the lifeguard tower, his golden skin gleaming under the sunlight. Abel Price moved with the casual authority of someone who owned the ocean, clipboard in hand and a confident smirk playing at his lips. His piercing blue eyes scanned the small group of arriving guests before settling on her.

"Welcome to Paradise Cove," Abel said, voice low and commanding, the kind that made conversations around him fade. "Mandatory safety briefing before anyone hits the water. Can't have my beach turning into a rescue zone on day one."

John nodded amiably, already distracted by the distant bar. Skylar offered a polite smile, fingers twisting the edge of her cover-up. The group formed a loose circle as Abel began his demonstrations, strong arms cutting through the air to illustrate rip currents and proper signaling. His voice carried steady rhythm, each instruction precise and unhurried.

Skylar listened, her hazel eyes tracking the way his muscles flexed with every gesture. Something about the cadence of his words pulled at her, like the pull of the tide itself. She shifted her weight, aware of the sand warming between her toes.

Abel finished the general talk and clapped the clipboard against his thigh. "Most of you are good. But I like to run a quick personal check on anyone who looks like they spend time in the water. Yoga, right?" His gaze locked onto Skylar. "You move like someone who knows their body. Step over here for a quick demo."

John gave her an encouraging pat on the shoulder. "Go ahead, babe. I'll grab us drinks." He wandered off without waiting for an answer, leaving her alone with the lifeguard.

Abel's smirk softened into something warmer as he guided her a few steps away from the remaining guests. "Name's Abel. And you are?"

"Skylar," she answered, voice softer than she intended. Her pulse quickened under the directness of his stare.

"Skylar. Beautiful. Eyes on me now. Safety starts with focus." He held her gaze, blue eyes steady and deep. "Breathe with the ocean. In slow, out slower. Feel the rhythm match your heartbeat."

She followed without thinking, drawing air in through her nose the way her yoga instructor taught. The sound of waves filled her ears, and the world narrowed to the intensity of his eyes. A strange calm settled over her shoulders, heavy yet pleasant.

"That's it," Abel murmured, voice dropping lower. "Your body knows how to relax. Every breath takes you deeper into that safe place. Shoulders loose. Mind open. You like following instructions when they keep you safe, don't you?"

Skylar nodded faintly, the motion feeling distant. Her limbs grew pleasantly heavy, and a soft warmth spread through her chest. She heard her own breathing sync with his instructions, each exhale carrying away a thread of tension she hadn't realized she carried.

"Good girl," he said, the praise sliding into her mind like warm water. "When I say the word 'safe,' later today or tomorrow, you'll remember this feeling. You'll come find me at the tower. Simple as that. Eyes stay on mine until I release you."

Her hazel eyes remained fixed, lashes fluttering once as the light trance held. Abel leaned closer, his breath brushing her ear in a whisper meant only for her. "You'll crave the safety I give you. And you'll keep this between us until the next time we meet."

He stepped back, breaking the eye contact with a snap of his fingers. Skylar blinked, the beach rushing back into focus. The sun felt brighter, the sand hotter beneath her feet. A flush crept up her neck, though she couldn't name exactly why.

"All set," Abel announced, voice returning to its easy public tone. "You're cleared for the water, Skylar. Enjoy the vacation."

She managed a small nod, legs carrying her back toward where John waited with two colorful drinks. Her mind replayed the briefing in fragments, the words "good girl" and "safe" lingering like an echo she couldn't quite shake. She told herself it was just the heat, just the change of scenery. Yet as she sipped her drink, her gaze drifted toward the lifeguard tower where Abel now stood, watching the horizon with that same commanding presence.

John launched into a story about the resort's jet-ski rentals, oblivious to the way her fingers trembled slightly around the glass. Skylar smiled at the right moments, but inside she felt the first subtle tug of something new, something that made the turquoise water ahead look both inviting and dangerous. The day stretched open before them, and already the memory of Abel's eyes held her attention more tightly than she wanted to admit.
