The Bonding Weekend
Scarlett lounged back on her bed, the silk sheets cool against her bare legs as she stared at the glowing screen of her phone. The hypnosis app sat open in her lap, its interface simple but promising. She had downloaded it weeks ago after stumbling across some underground forum posts about mind control techniques that actually worked. Her plan was simple and perfect. Jonathan had money, plenty of it, and he was generous with her mother. Why not redirect some of that generosity straight to her?
She tapped through the settings, testing the subtle audio tones and the swirling visual patterns designed to slip past conscious defenses. At twenty-two, Scarlett knew exactly how to play people. She was spoiled, sure, but that came from knowing what she wanted and getting it. Jonathan would be no different once she had him under. A few private moments alone, some carefully worded suggestions, and soon he would be handing over cash without a second thought. Maybe even more if she pushed it right.
She smirked to herself, imagining the look on his face when she casually mentioned needing a new car or a bigger allowance. He would agree without question. All she had to do was wait for the right opening.
The sound of rolling luggage echoed down the hall. Scarlett closed the app and slipped her phone into her pocket before heading downstairs. Gabby stood by the front door, her soft brown hair pulled into a loose ponytail, a warm but distracted smile on her face. Jonathan hovered nearby with his usual quiet authority, one hand resting on the small of Gabby's back.
"Flight's in three hours," Gabby said, adjusting her carry-on strap. "You two will be fine here, right? It's only a week."
Scarlett hugged her mother briefly, already feeling the thrill of opportunity. "We'll manage. Have fun at the conference. Don't work too hard."
Jonathan leaned down to kiss Gabby's cheek. His voice stayed smooth and even. "Call when you land. And enjoy yourself. You deserve the break."
Gabby waved one last time and disappeared through the door. The house felt immediately quieter, heavier with possibility. Jonathan turned to Scarlett, offering a polite nod. "Dinner's in an hour if you're hungry. I can have the chef prepare something light."
Scarlett smiled, sweet and practiced. "That sounds good. Maybe we could eat together? Just the two of us. Feels weird with Mom gone."
Jonathan studied her for a moment, those piercing gray eyes giving nothing away. "If you like. Seven o'clock then."
Over the next few evenings, Scarlett made sure they ate together every night. She chose her seat across from him at the long dining table, leaning forward just enough to draw attention without being obvious. Conversation started light. She asked about his work, laughed at his dry observations, and shared a few stories from college that made her seem more mature than she felt. Jonathan responded with measured interest, never pushing too far, always watching.
By the third night, the pattern felt natural. Scarlett poured herself another glass of wine and let the talk drift personal. "You know, I really appreciate how you take care of Mom. And me. It can't be easy stepping into a family like this."
Jonathan cut a precise piece of steak. "Family is what you make of it. I prefer stability over drama."
Scarlett tilted her head, letting her long dark hair fall over one shoulder. "I can be stable. Maybe I just need the right... guidance."
His eyebrow lifted slightly, but he said nothing more. She filed the reaction away. Progress.
The real opportunity came on the fifth night. Gabby's absence stretched on, and the house had settled into a comfortable rhythm. Scarlett waited until nearly midnight before finding Jonathan in the study. He sat behind his desk, reading something on a tablet, the room lit only by a single lamp. She knocked lightly on the open door.
"Can't sleep?" he asked without looking up.
"Something like that. Mind if I sit with you for a bit? It's too quiet upstairs."
He gestured to the leather chair across from him. Scarlett took it, pulling her phone out under the pretense of checking messages. The hypnosis app loaded silently. She had already queued a low-frequency tone mixed with soft spoken affirmations. Nothing aggressive yet. Just enough to test the waters.
They talked for nearly an hour. Scarlett steered the conversation toward relaxation and trust. "You always seem so in control," she said, letting her voice soften. "I wish I could relax like you do. Everything just rolls off your back."
Jonathan set the tablet aside. "Control is a choice. Most people simply don't make it."
Scarlett smiled and activated the app. The tone began, barely audible, threading through the quiet room. She watched his face closely, waiting for any sign of softening. When his shoulders stayed rigid and his eyes remained sharp, she decided to test a simple trigger she had prepared in advance.
"You know, Jonathan, you look tired. Why don't you just... relax for me?"
The words were meant to be innocuous, but she layered a specific cadence into them, hoping the app would amplify the suggestion. Jonathan's expression did not change. He leaned back slightly, but there was no glaze in his eyes, no slackening of his posture.
She tried again, softer this time. "Just let go. Let everything fade for a minute."
Nothing. His piercing gray eyes stayed fixed on her, calm and entirely aware. Scarlett felt a flicker of irritation rise in her chest. The app's timer showed it had been running for several minutes. She killed the tone with a quick swipe and forced her smile to stay in place.
"Anyway," she said, standing too quickly, "I should probably try to sleep. Thanks for the talk."
Jonathan gave a single nod. "Good night, Scarlett."
She left the study with her phone clutched tight in her hand, frustration burning hot beneath her skin. The first attempt had failed completely. Jonathan remained untouched, and she was no closer to the money or the control she wanted. She would have to try harder next time. Much harder.
