Professional Introductions
Johnny Guest unlocked her office door and stepped inside, the familiar scent of old books and lemon polish greeting her like an old friend. The campus had quieted hours ago, most of the evening adult-education classes dismissed. She set her leather briefcase on the desk and smoothed her pencil skirt, checking the time on her watch. Brad Jessup was due any minute.
She had hired him on a recommendation from the department chair. His reputation for helping students with focus issues through clinical hypnosis sounded promising, even if Johnny herself had always found the idea a little theatrical. Still, her students needed something. Too many of them arrived exhausted from work, their attention drifting during lectures on business ethics and organizational behavior. If this technique could sharpen their productivity, she would swallow her skepticism.
A soft knock sounded at the open door. Johnny looked up to see Brad Jessup filling the frame, tall and lean in a tailored charcoal suit. His salt-and-pepper hair caught the overhead light, and his dark eyes settled on her with an easy warmth.
"Professor Guest," he said, voice low and measured. "Thank you for staying late. I appreciate the opportunity to discuss your students."
"Please, call me Johnny," she replied, gesturing to the chair across from her desk. "And thank you for coming. I have to admit I'm curious about how this works in practice."
Brad settled into the seat with unhurried grace, crossing one ankle over his knee. "It works best when we keep things straightforward. Your students are adults balancing jobs and coursework. Their minds are scattered. Hypnosis gives them a structured way to reset that focus."
Johnny nodded, pulling a notepad closer. "I've noticed the same pattern. They come in motivated but lose steam halfway through the term. I've tried extra office hours and stricter deadlines, but the improvement is marginal. What exactly would you do with them?"
"Short sessions," Brad answered. "We start with relaxation, then layer simple suggestions for concentration and task completion. Nothing dramatic. They leave feeling refreshed and more in control of their time."
She studied him across the desk. There was nothing overtly showy about him, yet his presence filled the small office. "And you've seen measurable results with adult learners?"
"Consistently," he said. "The key is making the suggestions feel natural. The mind accepts what it already wants."
Johnny felt a small flicker of interest. She had always prided herself on discipline, yet the idea of an external tool easing that burden intrigued her. "Would you be willing to demonstrate? On me, I mean. Just so I understand what my students would experience."
Brad's mouth curved in a faint smile. "Of course. It would help you explain the process to them. Shall we begin?"
She hesitated only a moment before standing and moving to the small couch against the far wall. Brad followed, pulling a second chair close so they sat facing each other. The office felt smaller with him there, the late-hour quiet pressing in around them.
"Make yourself comfortable," he said. "Feet flat on the floor. Hands resting in your lap. You can keep your eyes open or closed, whichever feels easier."
Johnny chose to keep them open, watching his face. His voice shifted, softening at the edges without losing its clarity.
"Good. Now take a slow breath in through your nose. Hold it for a count of three. Release it through your mouth. That's it. Each breath lets a little more tension leave your shoulders."
She followed the instructions, surprised at how quickly the tightness between her shoulder blades began to ease. Brad's words continued in that steady cadence, guiding her attention to the weight of her body against the cushions, the faint hum of the building's ventilation.
"Notice how your eyelids feel heavier with each breath," he continued. "Not forced. Just natural. Like they're ready to rest. And as they grow heavier, your thoughts slow down as well. There's nothing you need to do right now except listen."
Johnny's eyelids did feel heavier. She let them drift half-closed, the edges of the room softening. Her breathing had slowed without her trying. A quiet part of her mind noted how effective the technique was, even as the rest of her simply followed along.
"That's right," Brad said. "You're doing very well. From now on, when I say the phrase 'deep focus,' you'll find yourself returning to this same state of calm relaxation. Your mind will clear, your body will settle, and you'll be ready to concentrate on whatever task is in front of you. Do you understand?"
"Yes," she murmured, the word slipping out before she could shape it more formally.
"Good girl," he said, the praise landing softly. "And when you hear that phrase again, the effect will grow stronger each time. For now, we'll bring you back up. In a moment I'll count from one to five. At five, you'll open your eyes feeling refreshed and alert, remembering everything we've discussed."
The count came gently. Johnny blinked as her eyes opened fully, the office light suddenly brighter. She sat straighter, rolling her shoulders. The residual calm lingered like the warmth of a good cup of tea.
"That was... efficient," she said, searching for the right word. "I didn't expect to feel this clear-headed afterward."
Brad watched her with quiet satisfaction. "Most people don't. The relaxation trigger works quickly once it's installed. Your students will appreciate the same reset."
Johnny glanced at the clock. Nearly nine. She should be heading home, yet the idea of another session already formed in her mind. The demonstration had been brief, almost clinical, but the ease it left behind felt addictive in a way she couldn't quite name.
"I'd like to schedule a second meeting," she said. "To go over the full curriculum you'll use with them. And perhaps another short demonstration, if you think it would help me understand the progression."
Brad's eyes held hers for a moment longer than necessary. "I think that's an excellent idea, Johnny. Same time next week?"
She nodded, already reaching for her calendar. The relaxation still hummed beneath her skin, making the decision feel simple rather than impulsive. As Brad gathered his notes and stood, she found herself looking forward to the next time his voice would guide her through those measured breaths.
"Until then," he said, and left her office with the same unhurried confidence he'd arrived with.
Johnny remained on the couch a moment longer, fingertips tracing the edge of her notepad. She felt unusually light, the usual end-of-day fatigue absent. The trigger phrase echoed once in her thoughts before she set it aside. Professional curiosity, she told herself. Nothing more. Yet as she packed her briefcase and turned off the lights, the promise of that second session stayed with her, warm and quietly insistent.
