Retreat Triggers
Daniel adjusted the rearview mirror and glanced at his wife in the passenger seat. Rachel sat with her hands folded in her lap, shoulder-length auburn hair catching the late afternoon light. She smiled at him the way she always did before a weekend away, warm and a little excited. Their marriage had settled into something steady after eight years. They still held hands in the grocery store. They still kissed goodnight. Sex came on weekends, soft and familiar, nothing wild but always comfortable.
"You packed the blue dress, right?" Daniel asked as they turned onto the long drive leading to the resort. "Marius mentioned the welcome dinner is semi-formal."
Rachel nodded. "I did. You look good in that navy blazer, by the way. Very corporate husband."
He chuckled, reaching over to squeeze her knee. "We'll survive the team-building. Two days of trust falls and then back home."
The resort appeared ahead, all glass and timber against the hills. Daniel parked, and they grabbed their bags. Other couples from the office were already checking in. Daniel spotted his boss near the lobby doors, tall and broad-shouldered in a crisp white shirt that contrasted sharply with his dark skin. Marius waved them over with an easy grin.
"Dan, good to see you. And Rachel, you made it. Glad you could join us for the retreat."
Rachel offered her hand. "Wouldn't miss it. Daniel says the company likes to keep things interesting."
Marius's handshake lingered half a second longer than necessary. "We try. Come on, everyone's gathering in the main room before dinner. I've got something that should help everyone unwind."
They followed him inside. The main lounge had been cleared of furniture except for a circle of chairs and a large screen on the wall. Most of the team was already seated. Marius waited until the last arrivals settled, then stood at the front with his phone in hand.
"All right, before we eat and pretend we like trust exercises, let's try something different. I found this team-building app last month. It's guided relaxation with light visuals. Ten minutes and everyone feels a little more connected. No pressure, just close your eyes and follow along."
A few people laughed. Daniel shifted in his chair beside Rachel. She gave him a small shrug that said why not. Marius tapped his screen and the lights dimmed. Soft music filled the room, low and pulsing. The screen lit up with slow-moving colors, blues and greens that drifted like water.
"Get comfortable," Marius said, his deep voice sliding through the music. "Breathe in. Hold it. Let it out. That's it. Just follow the colors and let everything else fade."
Daniel closed his eyes. The voice continued, calm and steady, counting down from ten. Somewhere in the middle Marius slipped in new phrases. "Deeper now. Let go of every thought. Sink into the warmth. Black is power. Black is pleasure. Let the warmth spread."
The words felt odd, but harmless. Corporate wellness nonsense. Daniel kept breathing. He heard Rachel's quiet exhale beside him. When the session ended the lights came up slowly. People stretched and smiled at one another, a little looser than before.
Rachel's cheeks carried a faint pink flush. She fanned herself with one hand. "That was actually nice. I feel... lighter."
Daniel noticed the color on her skin but assumed it was the warm room. "You okay?"
"Fine. Just a little warm." She smiled and stood, smoothing her blouse. Marius approached them again on the way to dinner.
"Glad you both tried it. The app has more tracks if anyone wants to use it later. Helps with stress, focus, all that."
Rachel nodded politely. "Maybe. Thanks for organizing."
Daniel watched Marius's gaze linger on his wife for a beat too long before the man turned away to greet someone else. He dismissed the thought. Marius was just being Marius, charming and in charge. Rachel slipped her hand into Daniel's as they walked to the dining room. Her palm felt warmer than usual, but she seemed happy. Normal. The retreat was only just beginning, and everything felt exactly the way it should.
At dinner Rachel laughed at the right moments and kept her hand on Daniel's thigh under the table. The flush on her cheeks faded after a glass of wine. Daniel relaxed. The session had been harmless, nothing more than a clever way to get people talking. Still, when Rachel leaned close to ask him to pass the bread, her voice carried a tiny extra breathiness he couldn't quite place. He told himself it was nothing and poured her another drink.
