First Induction
Natalie Ford stepped off the elevator onto the top floor of pena Investments and smoothed her pencil skirt with one hand. At thirty-four she still moved with the crisp efficiency that had carried her from junior analyst to executive assistant in under a decade. Her auburn hair sat in its usual neat bun, and the sharp green eyes behind her glasses scanned the hallway as if checking for errors in a quarterly report. She told herself the mandatory wellness session was just another corporate formality, nothing to disrupt the careful balance she maintained between her career and her marriage to Brian.
The receptionist waved her through without a word. Natalie’s heels clicked softly across the marble as she approached the double doors marked William pena, CEO. She paused, drew a steady breath, and knocked once.
“Come in, Mrs. Ford.” William’s voice carried through the wood, deep and unhurried. She pushed the door open and found him standing behind his desk, tall and powerfully built in a charcoal suit that fit his frame like it had been cut for him alone. Early forties, skin the color of dark mahogany, and an easy smile that didn’t quite reach the assessing stillness in his eyes.
“Natalie,” he said, using her first name at once. “Thank you for coming up. These sessions are new, but the board believes they’ll help everyone manage the pressure of the new expansion. Close the door behind you.”
She did, then took the seat he indicated, a leather chair positioned directly across from him. The office smelled of leather and something faintly spiced. William remained standing for a moment, studying her with polite interest.
“We’ll keep this simple today,” he said. “Just breathing and relaxation. Nothing invasive. Think of it as a reset button for the workday.”
Natalie nodded, crossing her legs at the ankle. “I appreciate the efficiency, Mr. pena. I have the Q3 projections to finish before five.”
“William,” he corrected gently. “And the projections can wait ten minutes. Lean back. Hands in your lap. Good.”
She followed the instructions, surprised at how quickly her shoulders loosened. William’s voice stayed low and even, guiding her through a series of slow inhales and longer exhales. “In for four, hold for four, out for six. Let the air move through you like it knows exactly where it’s going.”
The rhythm was soothing. Natalie felt the usual tension behind her eyes begin to ease. Her thoughts drifted briefly to Brian, wondering what he would make of this new CEO-mandated ritual, then returned to the steady cadence of William’s instructions.
“That’s it,” William murmured. “Notice how your body already knows how to let go. Every breath carries you deeper into that calm place. When I say the words ‘executive priority,’ your mind will recognize them as a signal to return to this exact feeling. Calm. Focused. Ready to handle whatever the day requires.”
The phrase landed softly in her awareness. She repeated it once in her head without thinking, testing the weight of it. Executive priority. A small warmth bloomed low in her belly, unexpected but not unpleasant, like the first sip of good wine after a long meeting.
“Very good,” William said. “We’ll end there for today. When you’re ready, open your eyes and take a moment before you stand.”
Natalie blinked back into the room. The warmth had already faded, leaving only a faint sense of refreshment. She stood, gathered her folder, and offered a professional smile. “Thank you. That was… surprisingly effective.”
William’s answering smile was brief. “We’ll schedule the next one soon. Have a productive afternoon, Natalie.”
She returned to her desk on the floor below and threw herself into the projections. The rest of the day passed without incident, though she caught herself murmuring the phrase once under her breath when an email chain grew frustrating. The same small warmth answered, then vanished. She shook her head and kept working.
By the time she reached the apartment that evening, Brian was already home, sleeves rolled up, stirring pasta on the stove. He looked up with his usual easy grin. “Long day?”
“Mandatory wellness nonsense,” she said, kissing his cheek. “Breathing exercises with the new CEO. It was fine.”
Brian chuckled. “As long as they’re not replacing us with robots.” He handed her a glass of wine. They ate, talked about his latest analysis project, and went to bed early. Natalie lay awake for a few minutes after Brian’s breathing evened out, replaying the session in her mind. Executive priority. The words felt oddly satisfying on her tongue.
She slipped out of bed, padded to the bathroom, and turned on the shower. Steam rose quickly. She stepped under the spray, letting the hot water loosen the muscles in her neck and shoulders. Without planning to, she whispered the phrase again.
“Executive priority.”
The warmth returned at once, stronger this time, spreading from her core outward in slow, rolling waves. Her nipples tightened against the spray. A soft, involuntary sound escaped her throat. She pressed one hand to the tile and the other between her thighs, not quite touching, simply feeling the unexpected heat pulse through her. It wasn’t overwhelming, just insistent, as though her body had been given a new instruction it was eager to follow.
Natalie stayed under the water until the sensation eased, then shut off the taps and wrapped herself in a towel. In the mirror her cheeks looked faintly flushed. She touched them once, puzzled, then dismissed the reaction as leftover relaxation from the session. She climbed back into bed beside Brian, who murmured something sleepily and reached for her hand.
She lay still, staring at the ceiling. The warmth had gone, but the memory of it lingered, quiet and insistent. Tomorrow she would finish the projections. Tonight she simply breathed, and somewhere beneath the surface of her thoughts the phrase waited, ready to be spoken again.
