The gravel crunched under Marlene's boots as she stepped out of her rental car, the sound swallowed instantly by the vast silence of the Montana valley. She squinted against the late afternoon sun, her hand shielding her eyes as she took in the ranch before her.

Fairview Meadows stretched across the valley floor like a scar on the landscape. White fences sectioned off pastures where figures moved in the distance, their shapes indistinct against the golden grass. The main house stood two stories tall, its wraparound porch freshly painted, flower boxes spilling with late-season blooms. It looked peaceful. Welcoming even. That was the point, she knew.

Twenty-one days. Her sister had been gone for twenty-one days, and the only trail that led anywhere ended at this road.

Marlene reached back into the car and grabbed her jacket, slipping it on even though the air was warm. She liked the weight of it, the way it made her feel prepared. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, a message from her mother asking if she'd found anything. She ignored it.

The front door of the ranch house opened before she reached the porch steps. A woman in her fifties stepped out, wiping her hands on an apron that strained across her broad chest. She smiled, but the expression didn't quite reach her eyes.

"Can I help you, dear?"

"I'm looking for someone." Marlene kept her voice even, professional. "My sister. Lauren Manchester. She came here about three weeks ago for a retreat."

The woman's smile flickered. "We get a lot of visitors, honey. You'll have to be more specific."

"She's twenty-six. Dark hair like mine. About five foot six." Marlene pulled out her phone, showing a photo of Lauren from last Christmas, laughing at the dinner table, her face bright and unburdened. "She told our mother she was coming here for a wellness program. Something about holistic farming."

The woman studied the photo for a long moment. Too long. Her eyes moved from the screen to Marlene's face and back again, and something shifted in her expression. A calculation. Marlene had seen that look before, in the faces of people who were deciding how much to lie.

"I'm not sure about any Lauren, but you should talk to Mr. Loris. He handles all the guest records." The woman gestured toward the house. "Come inside. I'll get him for you."

Marlene hesitated. Every instinct she'd developed over years of investigative work told her not to step through that door. The ranch was too isolated. The woman's smile was too practiced. The silence of the valley was too complete.

But Lauren was here. She could feel it.

"Sure." She followed the woman inside.

The ranch house interior was warm and smelled of wood polish and something floral, lavender maybe. The decor was rustic but expensive, leather couches and woven rugs and photographs of cattle on the walls. But the cattle in the photos were wrong somehow. Their bodies were too heavy in the chest, their udders too large, their eyes too blank.

Marlene was still studying the photos when a man entered from a side hallway.

He was tall, in his forties, with the kind of composed authority that came from absolute control. His hair was gray at the temples, his jaw clean-shaven, his eyes a pale blue that seemed to see through everything. He wore a button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, and his hands were clean, well-kept.

"Mr. Loris." The woman who'd let Marlene in stepped aside. "This young lady is looking for her sister."

"Brendon Loris." He extended his hand, and Marlene shook it automatically. His grip was firm, his skin warm. "And you are?"

"Marlene Manchester. My sister Lauren came here three weeks ago. I need to know where she is."

Brendon's expression didn't change, but something in the air shifted. The temperature dropped, or maybe that was just Marlene's imagination. "Lauren. Yes, I remember her. Lovely girl. She came for the introductory program."

"Where is she?"

"She's still here, actually." Brendon smiled, and it was the most disarming smile Marlene had ever seen. "Some of our guests find the transition difficult. They need more time to adjust. Your sister is in our extended care facility."

"Take me to her."

"I will. But first, let me explain what we do here." Brendon gestured toward a sitting room off the main hall. "Please. Sit. I promise you, Lauren is safe and comfortable. She's simply going through a process."

Marlene didn't sit. "I don't need an explanation. I need to see my sister."

"And you will." Brendon's voice remained calm, unhurried. "But you came here alone, Miss Manchester. You drove three hours from the nearest airport. You didn't tell anyone the exact location of this ranch, did you? Your mother knows you're looking, but she doesn't know where."

Marlene's blood went cold. "How do you know that?"

"Because that's what they all do." Brendon stepped closer, and Marlene stepped back, her heel hitting the edge of a rug. "The sisters. The girlfriends. The wives. They come alone, thinking they're clever, thinking they'll find their loved one and leave. But this isn't that kind of place."

Marlene's hand went to her pocket, reaching for her phone. "I'm leaving."

"No. You're not."

The woman from the front door moved behind Marlene, blocking the exit. Brendon hadn't moved, hadn't raised his voice, hadn't done anything threatening at all. But Marlene knew, with the certainty of a trap closing, that she had already lost.

"Let me go." She kept her voice steady. "I have friends who know where I am. If I don't check in, they'll come looking."

"Your phone has been disconnected from the network since you walked through my door." Brendon said it like he was discussing the weather. "And your car will be moved to the garage within the hour. By morning, there will be no record of you ever arriving here."

Marlene lunged for the door.

She made it two steps before something hit her from behind. Not a person. A needle. The woman had stabbed her in the shoulder with something, and already Marlene could feel it spreading through her veins, a warm chemical tide that softened her muscles and blurred her vision.

"No." The word came out slurred. "No, please. I just want my sister."

"You'll see her soon." Brendon's voice was distant now, fading. "You'll see her every day for the rest of your life."

Marlene's knees buckled. The rug rushed up to meet her face, and she felt hands catching her, lowering her gently to the floor as if she were something precious. Something valuable.

"Good first dose," the woman said. "She'll be under for about six hours."

"Perfect." Brendon's footsteps approached, and Marlene felt his hand on her hair, stroking it like she was a pet. "Welcome to the herd, Miss Manchester. I promise you, by the time we're done, you won't remember wanting to leave."

Marlene tried to scream. No sound came out.

The last thing she saw before darkness took her was Brendon's face, still wearing that disarming smile, his pale blue eyes watching her with the clinical interest of a farmer examining new livestock.

Then nothing.

She dreamed of her sister. Lauren was standing in a field, her body changed, swollen, heavy. Her eyes were open but empty, and when Marlene called her name, she didn't respond. She just stood there, swaying gently, milk dripping from her chest onto the grass below.

Marlene woke to pain.

Her head throbbed. Her mouth was dry. And she was lying on something hard, something that vibrated with a low mechanical hum. She tried to open her eyes, but the light was too bright, and she squeezed them shut again.

"You're awake." A woman's voice. Not the one from before. Younger. "That's good. The first dose can be rough."

Marlene forced her eyes open. She was in a room she didn't recognize, white walls, white ceiling, fluorescent lights. She was lying on a metal table, and her wrists were strapped down at her sides. Her ankles too.

"Let me go." Her voice cracked. "Please. I won't tell anyone. I'll just leave."

"I can't do that." The woman came into view. She was young, maybe twenty-five, with auburn hair pulled back in a tight ponytail. She wore a white coat over a simple dress, and she held a clipboard in her hands. "Mr. Loris has given very specific instructions for you."

"I don't care what he said. This is kidnapping. This is illegal."

The woman smiled, and it was the saddest smile Marlene had ever seen. "There's no law here, Miss Manchester. Not anymore. This valley is private land. No jurisdiction. No oversight. Nothing you can do."

Marlene pulled against the straps. They didn't give. "My sister. Where is she?"

"She's in the main barn. You'll see her tomorrow, once your initial processing is complete."

"Processing for what?"

The woman set down her clipboard and picked up a syringe from a nearby tray. The liquid inside was milky white, thick, almost viscous. She held it up to the light, tapping it gently.

"For transformation." She met Marlene's eyes, and there was no cruelty in her gaze. Only resignation. "I'm sorry. Truly. But this is what happens here. This is what happened to your sister. And now it's what's going to happen to you."

Marlene thrashed against the restraints, her body arching off the table. The leather straps creaked against her skin, biting into her wrists as she twisted. She could feel the cold metal beneath her back, could feel how they'd stripped her down to her underwear while she was unconscious. The air in the room was cool against her exposed skin, raising goosebumps along her arms and stomach.

"No. No, you can't. Please. I'll do anything. I'll pay you. I'll get you out of here. Just let me go."

The woman shook her head. "There's nowhere to go. The nearest town is sixty miles away. No roads. No phones. No escape." She moved to Marlene's side, the syringe ready. "This will help with the changes. It'll make them easier."

"I don't want it to be easier. I want to leave."

"I know." The woman pressed the needle into Marlene's arm, and the milky liquid entered her bloodstream, cold and thick and wrong. Marlene watched it slide beneath her skin, the plunger depressing slowly, deliberately. The substance felt nothing like the first injection. That had been warm, softening. This was cold, spreading through her veins like ice water, pooling in her chest, her stomach, her breasts.

Marlene gasped. Her nipples hardened against her bra, aching, suddenly sensitive in a way she'd never felt before. Heat bloomed in her lower belly, and her back arched involuntarily, pressing her chest upward as if seeking something.

"What... what is that?" she managed, her voice thin.

"The first compound begins the physical changes. Hormonal, glandular, structural." The woman watched Marlene's body respond with clinical detachment. "Your mammary tissue will begin expanding within hours. Your body will start producing within days. The lactation cycle is accelerated here."

Marlene's breath came faster. She could feel her breasts swelling already, the cups of her bra growing tight, pressing into her flesh. The pressure was intense, almost painful, but beneath the pain was something else. A warmth. A fullness. A need that pulsed between her legs and made her thighs squeeze together against the straps.

"No," she whispered. "No, that's not... I'm not..."

"You will be." The woman set the empty syringe aside and picked up a second instrument, a small device with a curved metal end. "This helps with the next stage. It stimulates the letdown reflex. Trains your body to respond."

She attached the device to Marlene's right breast, the metal cold through the fabric of her bra, and turned it on. The suction was immediate, rhythmic, pulling at her nipple with a mechanical pulse that made Marlene's toes curl. She bit her lip to keep from crying out, but her body betrayed her, her back arching, her hips shifting against the table.

"Stop. Please stop."

"I can't." The woman's voice was gentle. "The process takes several hours. Your body needs to learn."

Marlene closed her eyes. The suction continued, relentless, and she could feel something happening inside her, a shifting, a changing, a rearrangement of tissue and blood and bone. Her breasts were growing now, visibly, the bra cutting into her flesh until the woman reached over and unclasped it, freeing them. They were larger than they'd been, fuller, heavier, the nipples engorged and dark against her pale skin.

The device latched on directly now, skin to metal, and the suction deepened. Marlene moaned despite herself, the sensation overwhelming, a mix of pain and pleasure that radiated from her chest to her core. She could feel wetness between her legs, could feel her body responding to the stimulation in ways she couldn't control.

"That's normal," the woman said, watching. "The arousal response is part of the process. It helps with milk production. Your body is learning to associate the pressure with release."

"I don't... I'm not..." Marlene couldn't form the words. Her thoughts were fragmenting, her resistance dissolving into the warm, pulsing rhythm of the machine. She could feel the first drops forming, could feel them being pulled from her, and the release was so profound, so complete, that she nearly sobbed.

"Good," the woman said. "That's good. The first letdown is always the hardest."

Marlene screamed. She screamed until her throat was raw, until the sound became a whimper, until the drug took hold and pulled her back under into that dreamless dark.

And somewhere in the distance, in the main barn where the herd was kept, Lauren Manchester heard her sister's cry and did not react. She simply stood in her stall, milk dripping from her swollen teats, her eyes fixed on nothing, her mind long since surrendered to the ranch.

The transformation had already begun.
