Homecoming Mockery
The front door slammed shut with that familiar rattle of old hinges, cutting through the quiet of the isolated house. Simon Crowley looked up from his plate, setting his fork down with deliberate calm. He already knew it was her. Becca always announced herself like she owned the place, even after months away at college.
She strode into the dining room still wearing her travel clothes, a fitted tank top and jeans that hugged her athletic frame. Long dark hair swung loose around her shoulders, and those expressive hazel eyes narrowed the moment they landed on him. "Dad. Still eating alone in the dark like some kind of hermit? Mom's not even back yet and you're already acting like the house revolves around your little experiments."
Simon allowed a small, measured smile. "Welcome home, Becca. Your flight was on time, I assume."
She dropped her bag by the table and pulled out a chair without asking, helping herself to the spare plate he'd set out anyway. "On time? Barely. Traffic from the airport was a nightmare, but hey, at least I didn't have to listen to you drone on about neural whatever-it-is the whole way. How's the reclusive genius project going? Still trying to wire people's brains like some mad scientist in a basement?"
Her sarcasm landed exactly as expected, sharp and superior. Simon cut a piece of steak, chewing slowly while he studied her. At twenty-two she carried herself with the same entitled confidence she'd perfected in high school, that bratty edge that had only grown sharper with distance. He could already feel the familiar pulse of anticipation beneath his stern patience. This time the correction would be permanent.
"Research has progressed," he said evenly. "The prototype is functional. I finalized the control app last week."
Becca rolled her eyes and speared a green bean. "Of course you did. God forbid you actually leave the house or talk to real people instead of hiding behind your gadgets. You know normal fathers ask about their daughter's classes or social life, right? Not just update them on their creepy mind-control toys."
She kept talking through dinner, each comment laced with mockery. The food was too bland, the house too quiet, his shirts too stiff and formal. Simon listened without interrupting, offering only short answers when required. Inside, his thoughts stayed ordered and clinical. Every dismissive laugh, every roll of those pretty hazel eyes, justified what came next. She needed to learn obedience. The neural entrainment device would make sure of it, one subtle trigger at a time.
Becca finished her meal first and pushed the plate away. "I'm done. Don't wait up. I'm going to unpack and then probably crash. Try not to spend the whole night staring at brain scans or whatever."
She stood, grabbed her bag, and headed upstairs without another glance. Simon waited until her footsteps faded before rising. Her phone lay exactly where he'd expected, left carelessly on the sideboard while she ate. He picked it up, unlocked it with the code he'd memorized months ago, and installed the discreet app in under two minutes. The icon blended seamlessly with her other utilities. No notification, no visible change. Only he would ever see the dashboard that now linked directly to the small receiver he'd hidden in her room weeks earlier.
Upstairs, Becca's door clicked shut. Simon returned to his study and opened his laptop. The connection confirmed within seconds. He watched the status bars settle into green and allowed himself a single slow breath. The first phase had begun.
Becca tossed her bag onto the bed and kicked off her shoes. The room felt stuffier than she remembered, the air thick after the long flight. She peeled off her tank top and unhooked her bra, letting both fall to the floor. Her skin prickled with sudden warmth that had nothing to do with the temperature. A low, insistent heat bloomed low in her belly, spreading outward in slow waves.
"What the hell," she muttered, pressing a hand to her stomach. It felt like the start of arousal, but that made no sense. She wasn't thinking about anyone. She wasn't even horny. The sensation intensified anyway, a pulsing throb between her legs that made her thighs press together automatically. Her nipples tightened against the cooler air.
She shook her head and moved to the dresser, pulling out an old sleep shirt. The fabric brushed over sensitive skin and drew a soft, involuntary sound from her throat. Becca froze, cheeks flushing. She never made noises like that. Not over nothing. The heat refused to fade. Instead it settled deeper, a slow-building ache that left her distracted and strangely restless.
Downstairs, Simon monitored the biometric feed. Heart rate elevated. Skin temperature rising in precise increments. The subtle entrainment pulses were working exactly as designed, planting the first threads of conditioned response without any conscious trigger. Becca would feel the warmth, the intrusive need, and have no explanation for it. That ignorance was the point. Seeds of obedience, he reminded himself, grew best in the dark.
Becca climbed into bed and pulled the sheet up, trying to ignore the way her body kept responding. She scrolled her phone out of habit, but nothing held her attention. Every few seconds the low throb returned, stronger now, making her shift and press her thighs tighter. Her breath came a little quicker. She told herself it was just travel exhaustion, jet lag, maybe even the wine from dinner. The excuse felt thin even as she formed it.
Her hand drifted lower without conscious thought, fingertips brushing the waistband of her underwear. She stopped, frowning at herself. This wasn't like her. She didn't get worked up over nothing, alone in her childhood bedroom. The heat pulsed again, insistent, and her resolve wavered. Just for a moment she let her fingers slip beneath the fabric, brushing warm, slick skin. The contact sent a sharp jolt of pleasure through her that made her bite her lip hard.
Becca yanked her hand back and rolled onto her side, facing the wall. Her heart raced. She refused to finish what the strange sensation had started. It would pass. It had to pass. She closed her eyes and tried to think about tomorrow's plans, about anything except the lingering ache that refused to leave her alone.
In his study, Simon watched the feed stabilize. The first session had lasted only minutes, but the data already showed promising neural linkage. Becca's resistance remained intact on the surface, her sarcastic armor undisturbed. Beneath it, however, the device had begun its quiet work. Tomorrow he would test a simple command through the app. For now, he closed the laptop and allowed himself the smallest satisfaction.
Becca lay awake longer than she meant to, body still warm and traitorous. She told herself the sensations meant nothing. They were random, meaningless, already fading. By morning she would forget the entire strange episode. She had no idea the app on her phone was still active, or that her father now held the controls to every future flush of heat, every reluctant obedience, every slow erosion of the pride she wore so loudly.
She finally drifted off with one last defiant thought: whatever this was, it would not change her. She was Becca Crowley. She did not break for anyone, least of all the stern, reclusive man downstairs. The house settled into silence around her, but the first invisible thread had already been pulled tight.
