Needle and Need
The studio lights were low, casting long shadows across the black vinyl chair where Darren Corby lay face down. The only sound was the steady buzz of the tattoo machine in Pilar Logan's hand, its needle dragging ink across the broad expanse of his back. She worked in silence at first, focused on the intricate lines of the piece he had commissioned, a sprawling design of thorny vines twisting around skeletal branches that would eventually frame a central motif still taking shape in her mind.
Pilar adjusted her grip, leaning closer. The scent of antiseptic and ink hung in the air, familiar and grounding. Darren's skin was warm under her gloved fingers, already heavily marked with older tattoos that shifted with each breath he took. She paused to wipe excess ink, her movements precise and professional even at this late hour.
"You're steady tonight," Darren said, his voice low and unhurried. "Most artists get sloppy after midnight."
Pilar smiled faintly, though he couldn't see it. "Habit. Cole and I used to stay up late talking about projects. Now it's just me and the work."
The needle resumed its path. She traced a curving line along his spine, feeling the subtle tension in his muscles. Darren was in his mid-forties, broad-shouldered and solid, the kind of client who filled the chair completely. His salt-and-pepper hair was cropped short, and the existing ink on his arms told stories she hadn't asked about yet.
Conversation drifted as the hours passed. They talked about the design first, the way the vines would catch light once shaded, how the negative space would make the central element pop. Then it moved to her sleeve tattoos, the way she layered color and line. Pilar found herself relaxing into the rhythm, the buzz of the machine filling the quiet studio like a heartbeat.
"You've got a good eye," Darren said after a stretch of silence. "Most people who own their own place burn out. You still seem hungry for it."
Pilar hesitated, the needle hovering. "Hungry is one word for it. Cole and I have been trying for a kid for over a year now. The disappointment kind of bleeds into everything else. Makes the late nights easier, I guess."
She hadn't meant to say it. The words slipped out between passes of the needle, raw and unfiltered. Her hand stayed steady, but heat crept up her neck. She wiped the skin again, buying time.
Darren didn't flinch. "Trying the old-fashioned way?"
"Yeah. Tests, timing, the whole routine. Cole's patient about it. Too patient sometimes." Pilar exhaled through her nose, focusing on a tight cluster of lines near Darren's shoulder blade. "It's not like we don't... you know. We do. It just doesn't stick."
"That's rough," Darren replied, his tone casual, almost conversational. "My ex used to joke that I was too fertile for my own good. Three kids before thirty-five. Never had a problem putting one in there when it counted."
The words landed heavy in the quiet room. Pilar's needle paused for half a second longer than necessary. She resumed, but the air felt thicker now, charged. Darren's virility mentioned so offhand, like it was nothing, while her own body had become a battlefield of cycles and negatives.
She worked in silence for several minutes, the only sounds the machine and their breathing. Her gloved fingers brushed the edge of an older tattoo on his lower back, lingering a beat too long as she steadied the skin. Darren didn't move, but she felt the shift in his posture, the subtle awareness between them.
Another pass. Another wipe. Her thoughts tangled. Guilt flickered, quick and sharp. Cole was home, probably asleep by now, trusting her with these late sessions. She loved him for that trust, for the gentle way he never pushed. Yet here she was, skin prickling under the hum of the needle while another man spoke about filling what Cole could not.
Darren's voice cut through again, softer. "You ever think about what it would feel like? Carrying something that finally took?"
Pilar swallowed. Her hand trembled once before she steadied it. "Every day."
The session stretched on. Touches grew more deliberate, her fingers pressing to check saturation, to stretch skin for the next line. Each contact sent a low current through her. Darren remained still, but the silence between words grew dense, loaded with something neither named. She finished the section she had planned for the night, wiping the skin clean one last time.
"Looks solid," she said, voice tighter than usual. "We can pick up next week."
Darren sat up slowly, rolling his shoulders. The fresh ink gleamed under the lights. He met her eyes for the first time in hours, his gaze steady and unreadable. "Looking forward to it, Pilar."
She nodded, already peeling off her gloves. The studio felt too small suddenly. She locked up after he left, the click of the deadbolt echoing in the empty space.
Driving home, her body hummed with leftover tension. The image of Darren's inked back, the casual weight of his words about virility, the way his skin had warmed under her touch, all of it pressed against her thoughts. By the time she slipped into the apartment, her skin felt oversensitive, her pulse quick in her throat.
Cole was awake, reading on the couch in soft lamplight. He looked up, gentle smile in place. "Late one?"
Pilar crossed the room without answering, climbing into his lap and kissing him hard. Her hands framed his face, urgent. Cole responded with surprise that melted into heat, his arms coming around her waist.
"Tell me about him," she whispered against his mouth, already tugging at his shirt. "The client. Broad shoulders. All that ink. I kept thinking about what he'd look like moving."
Cole's breath caught. He didn't question it, just let her pull him down onto the couch, her body already rocking against his. Pilar described the feel of Darren's skin under her needle, the low timbre of his voice, the way the machine's buzz had synced with the throb between her legs. She rode Cole with frantic rhythm, chasing the edge that had built all night, guilt and arousal twisting together until she came with a sharp cry, forehead pressed to his shoulder.
Cole held her afterward, stroking her back, sensing the extra charge in her without knowing its source. Pilar closed her eyes, breathing him in, the conflict inside her already beginning to stir again.
