Authority on the Bench

Judge Margaret Sterling adjusted her black robes with a precise tug at the collar and surveyed the courtroom from her elevated bench. The oak surface gleamed under the fluorescent lights, and the seal of the court hung behind her like a silent reminder of order. She kept her ash-blonde hair pinned in its usual tight chignon, every strand in place, and her piercing blue eyes swept over the litigants without warmth.

"This court finds that the minor child shall remain in the custody of the maternal grandmother," she said, her voice crisp and measured. "The father's repeated failures to maintain stable employment and suitable housing demonstrate a clear pattern of irresponsibility that endangers the child's welfare. Visitation is denied pending further review."

A murmur rippled through the gallery. The young father in the cheap suit dropped his head, shoulders shaking once before he composed himself. Maggie allowed no flicker of sympathy to cross her face. She had seen too many cases like this, too many excuses dressed up as hardship. Upper-class decorum demanded clarity, not coddling.

"Furthermore," she continued, "the court reminds all parties that these proceedings concern the best interests of the child, not personal grievances. Any attempt to introduce irrelevant emotional appeals will be met with sanctions. Decency in this courtroom is not optional."

She rapped the gavel once. The sound echoed cleanly. The grandmother's attorney nodded in quiet approval while the father's representative gathered papers with stiff fingers. Maggie rose, robes settling around her tall frame, and stepped down for the scheduled recess.

In the hallway outside, the air felt cooler. She accepted a folder from her clerk and turned toward the side corridor when a familiar voice called her name.

"Your Honor. A word, if I may."

Andrew Sharisky stood a respectful distance away, hands visible, his dark hair slicked back and collar open just enough to show the edge of a tattoo. His cheap but sharp streetwear contrasted with the polished marble around them. Maggie remembered the case file. He had been a defendant in a custody dispute she had ruled against weeks earlier, citing his criminal associations and unstable lifestyle.

"Mr. Sharisky, this is not the time for ex parte communication," she said, her tone clipped.

He extended his hand anyway, palm open in a gesture of apparent deference. "Just wanted to thank you for your fairness, Judge. No hard feelings."

Maggie hesitated, then placed her hand in his for the briefest shake. Something small and metallic pressed into her palm. She glanced down. A pendant on a thin chain, the metal catching the light with an odd, shifting pattern. Before she could question it, Andrew released her hand and stepped back.

"Appreciate the ruling, Your Honor. Really opened my eyes."

He walked away without waiting for a reply. Maggie frowned at the pendant, turning it once. The surface seemed to pulse faintly, though she attributed it to the hallway lighting. She slipped it into her robe pocket and returned to chambers, dismissing the encounter as another attempt at manipulation.

Alone behind her desk, she reviewed the next docket. The pendant rested on the blotter where she had placed it. She reached for it again, fingers brushing the metal, and a strange warmth spread through her fingertips. Nothing alarming. Just the residual tension of the morning session, she told herself.

Her thoughts drifted to the father's defeated posture. For a fleeting moment an image surfaced: the man on his knees, mouth open, begging in a way that had nothing to do with custody. The vulgarity of it startled her. She shook her head sharply.

"Stress," she muttered. "Too many late nights with the files."

The pendant caught her eye again. She picked it up, studying the etched design. A low hum seemed to rise at the back of her mind, suggesting she might enjoy letting go of the rigid posture she maintained all day. The idea felt foreign, intrusive. She set the pendant aside and straightened her shoulders, returning to the files with renewed focus.

When the recess ended she returned to the bench, the pendant tucked safely in her pocket once more. The next hearing began without incident, her voice as steady and authoritative as ever. Yet beneath the surface, a single crude word lingered from that earlier flicker, refused and forgotten, or so she believed.

She lectured the new set of litigants on proper conduct, her diction precise, every syllable a shield of upper-class certainty. The day continued as it always had. Or so it seemed.
