The Ask

The door clicked shut behind her, and Samantha Bremman stood alone in Professor Carson's office, her hands gripping the strap of her messenger bag like a lifeline. The room smelled of old books and something sharper, like the antiseptic they used in the science buildings. She had been in this office a dozen times before, for office hours and committee meetings and the kind of polite academic conversation that filled a transcript but never a memory. Today was different. Today she was here to beg.

He sat behind his desk, not rising, not offering her a seat. His gray eyes fixed on her with the same calm assessment he used when grading her papers. She had earned A's in his classes. She had earned his respect. She was about to find out if that was enough.

"Professor Carson," she started, and her voice came out steady despite the tremor in her chest. "Thank you for seeing me."

"You said it was urgent, Ms. Bremman." His tone was flat, administrative. He leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking under his weight. "I've got a department meeting in twenty minutes."

She took a breath. She had rehearsed this. She had practiced it in the mirror of her dorm room, had written and rewritten the key points on index cards she now crushed in her pocket. But standing here, under the weight of his attention, the words felt thin.

"I need a letter of recommendation," she said. "For graduate school. The deadline is in three weeks."

He did not blink. "I'm aware of the timeline. You submitted a request through the department portal."

"I did. But I wanted to ask you directly. To explain why it matters so much." She stepped forward, closer to his desk. "You know my work. You know I can do this. The program at Stanford is competitive, and I need your letter to have a real chance."

"Your GPA is 3.8. Your thesis is strong." He recited the facts as if reading from her file, which he probably had open on his laptop. "You have other professors who could write for you."

"None of them know me like you do." She hated how desperate that sounded. "You've supervised my independent study. You've seen my research. A generic letter from someone else won't carry the same weight."

He studied her for a long moment, and she felt herself being measured, weighed, found wanting or not, she could not tell. His fingers drummed once on the desk, a slow, deliberate motion.

"You're correct that my letter would carry weight," he said. "You're also correct that I know you better than your other professors. But that raises a question, Ms. Bremman. How well do you want me to know you?"

The shift in his tone was subtle but unmistakable. The room seemed to contract around her. She felt the heat rise in her cheeks, but she held his gaze.

"I don't understand," she said, though she did. She understood perfectly. The question hung in the air between them, heavy and explicit.

"I think you do." He stood up, slowly, deliberately, and walked around the desk until he stood in front of her. He was taller than she remembered, or maybe she had just never been this close to him before. The space between them shrank to something intimate. "You're asking me to put my reputation behind your future. That's a significant request. I'd need something in return."

She swallowed. Her mouth was dry. "What kind of something?"

He reached out and took a strand of her dark hair between his fingers, rubbing it slowly. She did not pull away. She could not. The gesture was possessive, intimate, and she was frozen by the implications. His fingers trailed along the strand, then brushed the curve of her neck, a whisper of contact that made her skin prickle.

"I want ongoing access to your body," he said, his voice flat and administrative, as if he were discussing a syllabus. "You'll come to my office twice a week. You'll do what I tell you. In return, I'll write the letter and submit it by the deadline. And if you ever tell anyone about this arrangement, I'll deny it, and I'll see to it that no graduate program accepts you. You understand the stakes."

She felt the world tilt beneath her feet. This was not what she had expected. Not from him. Not from the professor whose lectures she had admired, whose feedback she had treasured. But the cold certainty in his eyes told her this was not a negotiation. It was a price.

His hand moved from her neck to her shoulder, then down her arm, a slow inventory. She felt her body respond despite herself, a flush spreading across her chest, her nipples tightening beneath her bra. He noticed. Of course he noticed. His gaze dropped to her chest, then returned to her face with the ghost of a smile.

"Your body seems to understand the arrangement better than your mouth does," he said. "I wonder if you're already wet."

She made a sound, something between a gasp and a denial, but he pressed on.

"When you come on Thursday, I'll inspect you. I'll determine what you can take. I'll use you as I see fit, and you'll thank me for it." His voice remained level, clinical, which made the words land harder. "I'll start with my fingers. Then my mouth. Then my cock. You'll learn to beg for each of them."

Her mind raced through options. She could refuse. She could walk out of this office and try someone else. But she knew, with the brutal clarity of a student who understands academic politics, that no other letter would have the same weight. His was the only one that mattered. And the deadline was three weeks away.

"How long?" she heard herself ask. "How long would I have to... do this?"

He released her arm and stepped back, giving her space she did not want because it made the distance between them feel like judgment. "Until I decide the arrangement no longer serves me. Could be a semester. Could be longer. That's not negotiable."

She thought about her father, a retired professor who had taught her to value education above everything. She thought about the student loans and the applications and the future she had already planned. One choice. One word. One moment that would change everything.

"Okay," she said, and the word came out smaller than she intended. "Okay. I agree."

He nodded once, as if confirming a transaction. "Good. We'll begin on Thursday. Come at four. Wear a skirt, no underwear. I want access to you the moment you walk through that door. We'll discuss the specifics then."

She felt the instruction land in her stomach like a stone. "Thursday. Come at four. Skirt, no underwear." She repeated the words mechanically, as if memorizing a formula.

"Correct." He returned to his desk and sat down, already turning his attention to the papers in front of him. "Close the door on your way out."

She turned and walked to the door, her legs moving without her permission. Her hand found the handle, cold and smooth. She opened it and stepped into the hallway, where the late afternoon light filtered through the windows and students walked past, oblivious to what had just transpired behind closed doors.

The door clicked shut behind her.

She stood in the hallway, her heart pounding in her throat, her fingers still gripping the strap of her bag. She had done it. She had gotten the agreement. And in doing so, she had given herself away.

The resignation settled over her like a coat she could not take off. She had made her choice. Now she would have to live with it.

She walked down the hall, past the bulletin boards and the water fountain, past classrooms where she had once been just a student. Now she was something else. Something she did not have a name for yet.

But she would learn.

Thursday at four.
