Office Party Sparks
Carolyn adjusted the collar of her blouse as she stepped out of the car, the cool December air brushing against her skin. The holiday office party was already in full swing inside the downtown hotel ballroom, with strings of white lights twinkling along the entrance and the low hum of laughter spilling out. Aaron walked beside her, his hand lightly on the small of her back, though his attention seemed elsewhere already, scanning the crowd through the glass doors.
"You look nice," he said, but the words felt automatic. Carolyn offered a small smile anyway, tugging at the hem of her modest black skirt. Her auburn hair was pinned back neatly, and she had chosen her usual professional attire, nothing flashy. Aaron looked sharp in his dark suit, athletic frame filling it out well, but she noticed the way his eyes kept drifting toward the growing groups of colleagues inside.
They entered together, the warmth and scent of mulled wine and perfume hitting them at once. Carolyn stayed close to Aaron at first, nodding at familiar faces from the office. As an administrator, she knew most of them, but these events always left her feeling a bit on the edges, observing more than participating. Aaron, though, seemed to relax into the atmosphere quickly, accepting a drink from a passing tray.
Cassian Fairbanks spotted them almost immediately. The tall executive cut through the crowd with his commanding presence, tailored suit impeccable, a glass of scotch in one hand. "Aaron, Carolyn. Glad you could make it," he said, his voice carrying that easy authority that filled the room. His eyes lingered on Carolyn for a moment, assessing, before shifting fully to her husband. "Aaron, there's someone I want you to meet. She's been asking about the new accounts project."
Carolyn felt Aaron's posture straighten slightly at the mention of work. Cassian gestured toward a woman standing near the bar, and Abigail Parrish turned at the sound of her name. Late twenties, with long dark hair cascading over one shoulder and a form-fitting red dress that hugged every curve, Abigail smiled as she approached. Her features were striking, confident in a way that drew attention without effort.
"Abigail, this is Aaron Stanton from accounts," Cassian said, his tone laced with subtle innuendo that Carolyn couldn't quite place. "And his wife, Carolyn."
Abigail extended a hand to Aaron first, her fingers lingering a second longer than necessary. "I've heard good things about your work," she said, her voice sultry and direct. "Cassian says you're the one who closes the tricky deals."
Aaron chuckled, a hint of color rising in his cheeks. "I try. Nice to meet you, Abigail."
Carolyn stood there, offering her own polite greeting, but the conversation quickly shifted. Cassian excused himself with a knowing nod, leaving the three of them. Abigail's attention stayed on Aaron, her body angled toward him as she asked about his recent projects. Carolyn listened, sipping her wine, noting the way Abigail's laugh came easily, rich and inviting.
After a few minutes, Carolyn made an excuse about finding the restroom, slipping away into the crowd. She didn't go far, though. The ballroom had alcoves along one side, partially screened by potted plants and dim lighting. She positioned herself near one, close enough to hear without being obvious. Her heart beat a little faster than usual, though she told herself it was just the party noise.
Aaron and Abigail had moved closer to the bar, their voices carrying just enough. Carolyn caught fragments at first, then more as the music dipped.
"So, Cassian mentioned you're good with people," Abigail said, leaning in slightly. Her dark hair fell forward, and she didn't bother to push it back. "I bet that charm works outside the office too."
Aaron laughed, but it sounded a touch nervous. "I don't know about that. Mostly just spreadsheets and meetings."
"Come on," Abigail teased, her tone playful and direct. "A guy like you? Athletic build, that smile? I saw the way some of the women here are looking. Don't tell me your wife keeps you all to herself."
Carolyn's fingers tightened around her glass. She watched Aaron's face, the initial surprise giving way to something else, a flicker of interest he tried to mask. Abigail reached out, lightly touching his arm as she spoke, and he didn't pull away.
"Carolyn's great," Aaron said, but his voice lacked conviction in the moment. "We keep things steady."
Abigail's smile widened, eyes sparkling with challenge. "Steady can be boring. You ever think about shaking things up? A little excitement?"
The words hung there, and Carolyn felt a strange warmth spread through her chest, mixing with the familiar tug of insecurity. She had always known Aaron was attractive, but hearing another woman pursue him so openly stirred something unexpected. Not just jealousy. There was a spark, a low thrum of tension that made her shift her weight, suddenly more aware of the fabric against her skin.
Aaron glanced around, as if checking for her, but his gaze returned to Abigail quickly. "You're direct, aren't you?"
"Life's too short not to be," Abigail replied, stepping just a fraction closer. "Cassian thought we'd get along. Maybe we should test that."
Carolyn turned away then, heart pounding, the overheard exchange replaying in her mind. She made her way back toward the main area, spotting Aaron still talking with Abigail from a distance. The initial tension was there, unmistakable, and the attraction between them already crackling under the surface of polite conversation.
She found a seat at a nearby table, watching as the party continued around her. The spark had ignited, small but undeniable, and Carolyn felt the first stirrings of something deeper, something she wasn't ready to name yet. Aaron laughed again at something Abigail said, and Carolyn's breath caught, equal parts unease and an unfamiliar heat building low in her belly.
