The Inheritance Shock
The lawyer's office smelled like old paper and lemon polish. Rosalind Vitale sat in a leather chair that creaked every time she shifted, her hands folded in her lap, her black dress still carrying the faint scent of funeral flowers. It had been three days since her father's heart attack. Three days of phone calls and condolences and the strange hollow feeling that came from losing the only family she had left.
"Miss Vitale?" The lawyer adjusted his glasses. "Are you ready to proceed?"
"Yes." Her voice came out steady. That was something. She had spent her whole life being steady. Quiet. Reliable. The accountant who balanced books and never made waves.
The lawyer cleared his throat. "Your father's estate is more complex than you might expect."
Rosa nodded. She knew her father had done well. He owned a few properties, had some investments. She expected a modest inheritance, maybe enough to pay off her student loans and put a down payment on a small apartment.
"Let's start with the assets," the lawyer said. "There is the property in Coral Gables, valued at two point four million. The commercial buildings on Calle Ocho, approximately six million. The offshore accounts in the Caymans, totaling roughly twelve million. And then there are the operational holdings of the organization."
The numbers didn't make sense. They floated in the air like foreign words.
"I'm sorry," Rosa said. "The organization?"
The lawyer's eyes flicked to the door. "Perhaps I should let someone else explain."
The door opened.
Rosa turned in her chair and the breath left her lungs.
He was tall. That was the first thing she noticed. Tall and broad-shouldered, wearing a charcoal suit that probably cost more than her monthly rent. Dark cropped hair, olive skin, a jaw that looked like it had been carved from stone. But it was his eyes that held her. Hazel, intense, fixed on her with an attention that felt physical.
"Andrew Briggs." The lawyer's voice had gone careful. "Miss Vitale's father's most trusted associate."
Andrew stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. The sound clicked like a lock turning.
"You can go," he said to the lawyer. Not a request.
The lawyer gathered his papers with nervous speed and retreated. The door clicked shut again and Rosa was alone with a stranger who looked at her like he already owned something she hadn't known she possessed.
"Your father never told you." Andrew's voice was low, direct. No warmth, no apology.
"Told me what?" Rosa's fingers gripped the armrests.
"About the syndicate. The Miami operation. The empire he built."
The word hung in the air. Syndicate. She had heard it in movies, read it in books. It didn't belong in this clean office with its mahogany desk and potted fern.
"My father was an accountant."
"He was." Andrew moved closer, his steps measured. "He was also the head of the most powerful organization in South Florida. He kept the books, but he also kept the peace. He ran the numbers and he ran the families."
Rosa stood up. Her legs felt unsteady but she made them work. "That's impossible. I knew my father."
"You knew what he wanted you to know."
The truth of that statement cut deeper than she expected. Her father had always been careful with her. Protective. Distant in ways she had attributed to his workaholic nature. She had accepted his late nights and mysterious phone calls because he had always come home to her.
"I don't believe you."
Andrew reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder. He held it out. "Look."
She took it. Her hands trembled as she opened it. Bank statements. Property deeds. Letters with names she didn't recognize, all referencing her father. The numbers were staggering. The scope was overwhelming.
"This can't be real."
"It's real." Andrew's voice softened, just slightly. "And now it's yours."
Rosa looked up. "What?"
"The organization. The syndicate. Everything your father built. It passes to you."
She shook her head. "I don't want it. I don't know anything about this world."
"That doesn't matter." Andrew stepped closer. She could smell him now. Sandalwood and something darker. "There's a clause in the will. A condition of inheritance."
"What condition?"
"You have to marry me."
The words didn't register. They bounced off her consciousness like rubber bullets.
"I'm sorry?"
"The syndicate requires stability. Your father knew that. He built this organization on trust and blood. Without a strong union, the families will fracture. The rivals will move in. Everything he built will burn."
"So I have to marry you." Her voice sounded strange. Distant.
"Within thirty days." Andrew's eyes never left hers. "Or the entire organization dissolves. The assets are seized. The families are exposed. Your father's legacy becomes ash."
Rosa's mind raced. This was absurd. This was impossible. She was an accountant who lived in a studio apartment and ate frozen dinners. She balanced spreadsheets and filed taxes. She didn't inherit criminal empires and marry strangers.
"I don't even know you."
"You will."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have." Andrew moved closer still. He was close enough to touch now. "I'm sorry for this. For the way you're finding out. For everything you're losing. But the choice is made. It was made the day your father wrote that will."
"I can refuse."
"You can." Andrew's voice dropped. "But if you do, you'll be dead within a month. The families won't let a loose end survive. The rivals won't let a blood claim live. Your father kept you hidden for thirty years. Without his protection, without the organization, you're a target."
Rosa's knees buckled. She sat down hard in the chair.
Andrew crouched beside her. His hand covered hers. The touch was warm, surprising.
"I won't hurt you." His voice was barely a whisper. "I gave your father my word. I will protect you. I will keep you safe. But I need you to trust me."
"Trust you?" Rosa laughed, but it came out broken. "You just told me my whole life was a lie and now I have to marry you."
"I know." Andrew's thumb traced a slow circle on her hand. "I know this is too much. But we don't have time for you to process. We have time for you to survive."
She looked at him. Really looked. The scars on his knuckles. The tension in his jaw. The way his eyes held something she couldn't name. Something that looked almost like pain.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"I'm the man your father trusted most." Andrew stood, pulling her gently to her feet. "I'm the man who will keep you alive. And I'm the man who will be your husband."
"This isn't a proposal."
"No." His hand moved to her chin, tilting her face up. "It's a claiming."
He kissed her.
It wasn't gentle. It wasn't tentative. It was a statement of ownership, a brand pressed against her lips. His mouth was warm and firm, his hand sliding into her hair, tilting her head back. She should have pushed him away. She should have screamed.
Instead, she felt something crack open inside her.
The kiss deepened. His tongue traced her lower lip, asking permission she didn't know how to give. Her hands came up, not to push, but to grip his jacket. The fabric was expensive, smooth under her fingers. He tasted like coffee and something darker, something that made her knees weak. His other hand found the small of her back, pressing her against him, and the hardness of his body against hers sent a jolt of electricity through her spine. She could feel the muscle beneath his suit, the controlled power in the way he held her, like he was afraid she would shatter and equally afraid she would run.
His mouth moved to her jaw. Then her neck. Hot, open kisses that made her gasp, that made her fingers tighten in his jacket, that made her body arch against him of its own accord. She felt him exhale against her skin, felt the shudder that ran through him, and realized with a shock that he was holding back. That this man, who looked like he could break the world, was trembling.
"Rosa." Her name was a groan against her throat. His hand tightened in her hair, pulling just enough to expose the line of her neck, and his teeth grazed the sensitive skin below her ear. A sound escaped her, something between a whimper and a moan, and she felt his response in the rigid set of his body, in the way his hips pressed against hers, in the unmistakable heat that built between them.
His mouth found hers again. This time there was no hesitation. His tongue swept past her lips, claiming her, tasting her, and she met him with a hunger she didn't recognize. Her hands slid up his chest, over his shoulders, into her hair. The cropped strands were soft under her fingers. She pulled him closer, deeper, and he made a sound low in his throat that vibrated through her entire body.
The kiss went on. Seconds or minutes, she couldn't tell. The world outside this room ceased to exist. There was only his mouth, his hands, the heat of him, the way her body responded to him like it had been waiting for this without knowing it. When his hand slid from her back to her waist, fingers curving over her hip, she felt herself press into his palm, wanting more, wanting everything, wanting to drown in the sensation of being wanted by a man who looked at her like she was the only thing keeping him alive.
When he pulled back, her lips were swollen and numb. Her breath came in ragged gasps. Her legs trembled.
"That's the first and last time I'll take without asking." Andrew's voice was rough, wrecked. His eyes were dark, the hazel swallowed by black. "From now on, you choose. But you need to choose now."
Rosa's heart hammered against her ribs. Her body was still burning from the kiss, from the shock of it, from the terrible heat that had bloomed in her chest and pooled low in her belly. She could still taste him. Still feel the ghost of his hands on her waist, her hair, her neck. Still feel the ache of wanting more.
"I don't have a choice."
"You always have a choice." Andrew's thumb brushed her cheek, his touch impossibly gentle for a man who carried violence in his knuckles. "But only one of them keeps you alive."
She thought about her father. About the man she had loved and never really known. About the empire he had built and the legacy he had left. About the stranger standing in front of her, who had kissed her like he meant to consume her.
"Thirty days," she said.
"Twenty-eight now."
"I don't love you."
"You will."
The confidence in his voice should have angered her. Instead, it sent a shiver down her spine that had nothing to do with fear.
"One year." She tried to find solid ground. "I'll give you one year. If I want out after that, you let me go."
Andrew's eyes flickered with something she couldn't read. "Agreed."
"And I keep my name. Vitale. Not Briggs."
"Rosa Vitale." He said her name like he was tasting it. "That works."
"And I get to see the books. The real books. I'm not going to be a figurehead who doesn't understand what she's signing."
A ghost of a smile crossed Andrew's face. "Your father said you would ask for that."
"He knew me better than I thought."
"He knew you exactly." Andrew stepped back, giving her space. "I'll have the papers drawn up. We'll sign tomorrow. The wedding will be small, private, within the week."
"A week?"
"We don't have time for longer." Andrew's voice hardened. "The families are already restless. The rivals are already circling. Every day without a confirmed heir is a day they smell blood."
Rosa nodded. Her head was spinning. Her lips still tingled from the kiss, still ached with the memory of his mouth.
"I need to go home."
"You can't." Andrew's hand caught her elbow. "Your apartment isn't safe. You'll stay with me."
"With you?"
"At the villa. It's secure. Guarded. You'll be protected."
"Protected or imprisoned?"
"Protected." Andrew's eyes met hers. "I told you. I gave your father my word. I will keep you safe. Even from yourself, if I have to."
Rosa pulled her arm free. "I'm not a prisoner."
"You're not." Andrew's voice softened. "You're my future wife. And I intend to keep you alive long enough to become my wife."
She wanted to argue. She wanted to run. She wanted to wake up from this nightmare and find herself back in her quiet life with her quiet job and her quiet apartment.
But the kiss still burned on her lips. And her body still hummed with the echo of his touch.
And somewhere, buried beneath the fear and the shock and the grief, something else was stirring. A hunger she had never acknowledged. A need that had looked into Andrew Briggs's hazel eyes and seen a future she couldn't have imagined.
"Fine." The word tasted like surrender. "But I'm bringing my laptop."
Andrew's smile was sharp. "I wouldn't expect anything less."
He held out his hand.
Rosa looked at it. At the scars on his knuckles. At the strength in his fingers. At the man who had just turned her world inside out and kissed her like he owned her.
She took his hand.
His grip was warm, firm, steady. It felt like an anchor in a storm.
"Let's go home," he said.
And Rosa followed, because she didn't know what else to do. Because the woman who had walked into this office was already gone, replaced by someone she didn't recognize. Someone who had been kissed by a stranger and wanted more.
Someone who was about to become a mafia queen.

Someone who was about to become a mafia queen.
The Guarded Villa
The black SUV rolled through a set of iron gates that slid open without sound. Rosa pressed her palm against the cool window glass and watched the security cameras track their progress. Two guards with earpieces nodded at the vehicle as they passed.
"You'll get used to it," Andrew said from beside her. His voice was low, matter of fact.
She doubted that. The villa rose before her, all white stone and dark glass, perched on the edge of Biscayne Bay. It was beautiful in an austere way. Nothing like her father's cluttered house with its overgrown garden and stacks of newspapers.
"The property has twenty four hour surveillance," Franco said from the front seat. He twisted around to face her. "Motion sensors, thermal imaging, a patrol boat on the water. No one gets in without Andrew knowing."
"And out?" Rosa asked.
Franco's mouth twitched. "That depends on Andrew's mood."
Andrew said nothing. His hand rested on her thigh, heavy and warm. She should have pulled away. She didn't.
The car stopped at the front entrance. A woman in a crisp white shirt stood waiting, hands clasped behind her back. She opened Rosa's door before the driver could.
"Mrs. Briggs. Welcome. I'm Nancy, your house manager."
The name hit Rosa like a slap. Mrs. Briggs. She was Mrs. Briggs now. She took Nancy's hand and stepped out of the car, her heels clicking on the polished stone.
"I'll show you to your rooms," Nancy said. "Mr. Briggs's suite is on the top floor. There's a separate dressing room and bathroom for you, if you prefer privacy."
"She won't need a separate room," Andrew said.
He was already out of the car, his suit jacket unbuttoned, his tie loose at the collar. He moved with a predator's grace, all controlled power. Rosa watched him and felt something flutter in her chest. Something that wasn't fear.
Nancy's expression didn't change. "Of course, sir. I'll have your things brought up."
The tour of the villa took thirty minutes. Thirty minutes of marble floors and floor to ceiling windows, of minimalist furniture that probably cost more than Rosa's annual salary at the accounting firm. A home gym. A wine cellar. A panic room behind a hidden panel in the study.
"It's a lot," Andrew said.
They were standing on the terrace overlooking the bay. The water sparkled in the late afternoon sun. A yacht moored at the private dock bobbed gently.
"It's a fortress," Rosa said.
"It's necessary."
She turned to face him. "You really think someone's going to attack us?"
Andrew's eyes met hers. They were hazel in this light, flecked with gold. "I know they will. It's not a question of if. It's a question of when."
Rosa wrapped her arms around herself. The breeze off the water was cool, but that wasn't why she was shivering. "My father lived in a normal house. He drove a normal car. He had a normal life."
"Your father was a genius at hiding in plain sight," Andrew said. "He also had me. He had the whole network. You don't have that yet."
"I have you."
It came out before she could stop it. She felt heat rise to her cheeks.
Andrew stepped closer. His hand came up to cup her face, his thumb tracing her jawline. "You have me," he said. "But I'm not enough. You need to learn. You need to become what this family requires."
"And what's that?"
"Someone who can make the hard choices. Someone who can command a room full of killers and know she's their equal."
Rosa's throat tightened. "I'm an accountant, Andrew. I do taxes. I balance spreadsheets."
"You're a Vitale. That blood doesn't change because you chose a different career."
His hand slid to the back of her neck. His grip was firm, not painful. Proprietary.
"Tonight," he said, "you'll see what it means to be mine. Not just on paper. Not just in front of the cameras. Here. In this house. In this bed."
Rosa's breath caught. "I don't..."
"You don't what? Know if you want this?" His mouth curved, a ghost of a smile. "I felt you tremble when I kissed you at the reading. I saw the way your pulse raced. Your body knows what it wants, Rosa. You just need to let it speak."
She should have argued. She should have pushed him away and demanded time to think. But the truth was, she had been thinking. All day, every minute, replaying that kiss, the feel of his mouth on hers, the strength of his arms around her.
She wanted more.
Andrew saw it in her eyes. He nodded once, satisfied, and released her. "Good. Dinner's at eight. Nancy will show you where to wait."
He left her on the terrace, standing alone with the sunset and her racing thoughts.
Dinner was served on a smaller terrace off the master suite. The table was set with white linen and silver, a single candle flickering between them. The food was exquisite. Rosa barely tasted it.
Andrew ate with deliberate precision, cutting his steak into perfect bites, chewing slowly. He watched her the whole time.
"You're nervous," he said.
"I'm... processing."
"There's a difference?"
Rosa set down her fork. "I've never done this before. Any of this. The marriage, the syndicate, the..." She gestured vaguely. "The lifestyle."
"I know."
"Then why do you keep pushing?"
Andrew leaned back in his chair. The candlelight cast shadows across his face, making him look older, harder. "Because the longer you have to think, the more you'll talk yourself out of it. I've seen it before. Women like you, smart women, they overthink. They analyze. They find a thousand reasons to say no when the only real reason to say yes is sitting right in front of them."
"And what reason is that?"
"That you want me." His voice dropped, rough and low. "That you've wanted me since the moment you saw me at your father's funeral. That you felt it in your chest when I kissed you, that pull, that hunger. Deny it."
Rosa couldn't. Her lips parted, but no words came.
Andrew stood. He walked around the table and offered her his hand. "Come."
She took it.
The master bedroom was enormous. A king bed dominated the space, covered in dark silk sheets. The curtains were drawn, but the sound of the bay filtered through, water lapping against the shore.
Andrew stopped in the center of the room. He turned to face her, his hands settling on her hips.
"This is where you learn to stop thinking," he said. "This is where you let me show you what your body already knows."
Rosa's heart hammered. "I'm scared."
"I know." His thumb traced circles on her hip bone. "But you're also excited. I can feel it. The way you're trembling. The way your breath catches when I touch you."
She couldn't deny it. Her skin was hot, her blood alive in ways she'd never felt before.
Andrew lowered his head and kissed her. It was different from the kiss at the reading. Slower. More deliberate. He tasted her like he had all the time in the world, his tongue sliding against hers, his hands pulling her closer until there was no space between them.
Rosa melted into him. Her fingers found his shoulders, gripping the fabric of his jacket. He was solid and unyielding beneath her touch, a wall of heat and muscle.
He walked her backward until her knees hit the bed. He followed her down, covering her body with his, never breaking the kiss. His weight pressed her into the mattress, and she felt the hard length of him against her thigh. She gasped into his mouth.
"Tell me what you want," he murmured against her lips.
"I don't know."
"Yes you do. Tell me."
Rosa's mind was a blur. All she knew was the weight of him, the taste of him, the way his hands moved over her body like he was memorizing every curve.
"I want to feel," she whispered. "I want to feel everything."
Andrew's smile was dark and satisfied. "Good girl."
He sat up and unbuttoned his shirt with unhurried, deliberate movements. Rosa watched, transfixed. The scars she'd glimpsed before were more visible now, a map of violence across his chest and abdomen. He was beautiful in a brutal way. Muscle and bone and the evidence of a life spent surviving.
"Your turn," he said.
Rosa's hands shook as she reached for the buttons on her blouse. Andrew caught her wrists.
"No. Let me."
He undressed her with the same careful attention he'd shown at dinner. Each button, each clasp, each inch of exposed skin. He didn't rush. He savored. When the blouse fell open, he paused, his gaze sweeping over the lace of her bra, the swell of her breasts above it. His fingers traced the edge of the fabric, featherlight, making her shiver.
The clasp at the front gave way with a soft click. He peeled the lace aside and bent his head, his mouth closing over one nipple while his thumb brushed the other. Rosa arched into him, a sound escaping her throat that she barely recognized. His tongue circled and flicked, then he pulled gently with his teeth, and she felt the sensation shoot straight down between her thighs.
He continued downward. Her skirt. Her stockings. Each garment removed with the same deliberate care. When she was naked beneath him, Rosa felt exposed in a way she'd never experienced. But there was no shame in it. Only anticipation. Only the dark hunger in his eyes as he looked at her.
Andrew's hands began to move. They traced her collarbone, the curve of her breasts, the dip of her waist. Every touch sent sparks through her nerves. His palms were rough, calloused, and the friction of them against her soft skin made her breath come faster.
"You're beautiful," he said. "Do you know that?"
Rosa shook her head.
"You are." His hand slid lower, fingers brushing through the soft curls between her thighs. "And I'm going to spend the rest of the night proving it to you."
He kissed his way down her body. Her throat, where her pulse hammered. The hollow between her breasts. Her stomach, where her muscles quivered under his lips. Each kiss was a brand, a claim. When he reached her thighs, he looked up at her.
"Watch me."
Rosa propped herself on her elbows. She watched as Andrew lowered his head, as his mouth found the center of her, as his tongue began to move in devastating circles. The first stroke was slow, a long flat press that swept from her entrance to the swollen bud above. She felt everything. The heat of his breath. The wet slide of his tongue. The rough scrape of his jaw against her inner thighs.
The sound she made was broken, a gasp that turned into a moan. She had imagined this, fantasized about it, but the reality was nothing like her imagination. It was better. His mouth was hot and skilled, finding rhythms she didn't know she needed, building pressure in her core that made her toes curl.
"Andrew..."
He didn't stop. His hands gripped her thighs, spreading her wider, giving himself more access. His tongue flicked and pressed and circled until Rosa was writhing beneath him, her hands fisting in the dark sheets. He found a spot just below her clit, a place no one had ever found before, and he worked it with the flat of his tongue until she was shaking.
"Please," she gasped. "Please, I need..."
He pulled back just enough to speak. "Need what?"
"I don't know. I just... don't stop."
He didn't. He returned to her with renewed focus, his fingers joining his mouth, sliding inside her with a slow, deliberate thrust. She was slick and swollen, and he groaned against her flesh as he felt how ready she was. One finger became two, stretching her gently, curling to find the place inside that made her vision blur. His tongue worked her clit in tight, relentless circles while his fingers moved in a rhythm that matched the pounding of her heart.
Rosa's back arched off the bed. Her thighs began to tremble uncontrollably. The pressure built and built, coiling tight in her belly, climbing higher with each stroke of his tongue, each thrust of his fingers. She felt herself clench around him, felt the edge rushing toward her.
"Let go," Andrew murmured against her. "Come for me, Rosa."
She shattered. The orgasm crashed through her in waves, her body clenching around his fingers, her hips bucking against his mouth. She cried out, a sound she'd never made before, raw and uncontrolled. The pleasure radiated outward from her core, through her thighs, up her spine, until every nerve in her body was singing.
Andrew didn't pull away until she was limp, until her breathing started to slow. He pressed one last kiss to her swollen flesh, then crawled up her body and kissed her, letting her taste herself on his lips. She could feel his arousal hard against her hip, and the knowledge that he wanted her, that he was holding back for her, made something warm bloom in her chest.
"That," he said, "was just the beginning."
Rosa could barely form words. Her body felt like it belonged to someone else, someone who knew pleasure in ways she never had.
"I didn't know," she whispered.
"I know." Andrew's hand stroked her hair. "That's why I'm here. To teach you."
He kissed her again, deeper this time, and she felt his arousal press more insistently against her thigh. She reached down, her fingers wrapping around him, and he made a sound low in his throat. He was thick and hard, the skin silken over steel. She stroked him experimentally, and his hips jerked into her hand.
"Careful," he said, his voice rough.
"I want to feel you," she said. "All of you."
He reached for the nightstand, pulled a condom from the drawer, and rolled it on with practiced efficiency. Then he settled between her thighs, the head of him pressing against her entrance. He paused, watching her face.
"Look at me," he said.
Rosa met his eyes. They were dark, the gold flecks swallowed by black. She saw hunger there, and something else. Something that looked almost like tenderness.
He pushed inside her.
It was slow, inch by inch, giving her body time to adjust. She was still slick from his mouth, still trembling from her orgasm, and she felt every part of him as he filled her. The stretch was intense, almost too much, and then he was fully seated inside her, his hips flush against hers.
"God," she breathed. "You feel..."
"I know." His forehead rested against hers. His breath came ragged. "You feel incredible. So tight. So wet."
He began to move. Long, deep strokes that pulled almost all the way out before sliding back in. Each thrust pressed against that spot inside her, the one his fingers had found, and the pleasure built again, different this time. Deeper. More intense.
Rosa wrapped her legs around his waist, changing the angle, and he groaned. His pace quickened, his hips snapping forward with more force, and she met him thrust for thrust. The sound of their bodies coming together filled the room, wet and primal.
"Yes," she gasped. "Yes, Andrew, please..."
He drove into her harder. One hand gripped her hip, angling her up to meet him, while the other braced against the headboard. The bed creaked beneath them. His jaw was clenched, his eyes burning into hers, and she could see the control he was exerting over himself, the restraint that was costing him.
"Don't hold back," she said. "I don't want you to hold back."
Something shifted in his expression. He pulled out, flipped her onto her stomach, and entered her again from behind, one hard thrust that made her cry out. His chest pressed against her back, his mouth hot against her neck. His hand slid around her hip, his fingers finding her clit, and he began to stroke her in time with his thrusts.
The pleasure was overwhelming. Each thrust drove her into the mattress, each stroke of his fingers sent sparks through her nerves. She could feel another orgasm building, faster this time, more urgent. Her hands clawed at the sheets.
"I'm going to..."
"Do it," he said against her ear. "Come with me."
He drove into her one final time, deep and hard, and she felt him pulse inside her as he came. The sensation pushed her over the edge, and she shattered again, her body clenching around him, her moan muffled against the pillow. The pleasure was so intense it was almost painful, wave after wave rolling through her until she was spent and trembling.
They collapsed together, his weight pressing her into the mattress. His breath was hot and ragged against her neck. She could feel his heart pounding against her back, as fast as her own.
After a moment, he rolled off her and pulled her into his arms. She lay with her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart as it slowly returned to normal. The sound of the bay filled the room, water lapping against the shore.
"I've spent my whole life being careful," she said. "Being quiet. Trying not to take up space."
"I know."
"I don't want to be small anymore."
Andrew's arms tightened around her. "You won't be. Not with me."
Rosa closed her eyes. She was still trembling, still trying to understand the woman she was becoming. But for the first time since her father's death, she didn't feel lost.
She felt found.
And that terrified her almost as much as it thrilled her.
The Council Meeting
The dress Rosa wore felt like armor. Andrew had chosen it, a deep burgundy sheath that hugged her curves and ended just above her knees. The fabric whispered against her thighs as she walked, a constant reminder of the transformation happening inside her skin.
"You don't have to do this," Andrew said from behind her. His voice was low, careful, as if he expected her to shatter.
She turned to face him. He stood in the doorway of the bedroom they now shared, dressed in a charcoal suit that made his shoulders look impossibly broad. The scars at his wrists peeked from beneath his cuffs, reminders of the violence he carried so casually.
"I'm the heir," she said. "I'm your wife. I have to do this."
Something flickered in his hazel eyes. Pride, maybe. Or hunger. She was learning to read the small shifts in his expression, the way his jaw tightened when he wanted something.
"You're nervous," he said.
"I'm terrified."
He crossed the room in three strides. His hand came up to cup her jaw, tilting her face toward his. The touch was gentle, but she felt the steel beneath it, the restraint that cost him something every time he held back.
"You hide it well," he said. "That's good. They need to see you as strong."
"And if I'm not?"
His thumb traced across her lower lip. "You are. I've seen it."
The memory of the night before burned between them. His hands on her, his mouth, the way he had drawn pleasure from her body until she had forgotten her own name. She had been shy at first, uncertain of what to do, how to move. But he had guided her with patient intensity, teaching her what she liked, what she could ask for.
"Last night," she started, then stopped.
"What about it?"
"I didn't know I could feel like that."
His smile was rare and devastating. "There's more."
A shiver ran through her. "Show me. After this."
"After this," he agreed. "If you still want it."
She lifted her chin. "I will."
The council room was on the ground floor of the villa, a space Andrew had converted from a formal dining room into something more suited to his purposes. A long mahogany table dominated the center, surrounded by leather chairs. The windows were barred, the walls soundproofed. It smelled of old money and stale cigar smoke.
Six men waited for them. Rosa recognized Franco, standing against the far wall with his arms crossed. The others were strangers, captains of the syndicate her father had built, men who had answered to him and now had to answer to her.
Andrew pulled out a chair at the head of the table. "Sit."
She sat. He remained standing behind her, a wall of heat and presence that made the men across from her shift uncomfortably.
The oldest of them, a man with silver hair and a cruel mouth, spoke first. "This is a joke."
"It's not," Andrew said.
"She's a girl. An accountant. She doesn't know the first thing about running a business like ours."
Rosa kept her hands flat on the table, her nails short and unpainted. She had learned from watching her father that stillness was power. The men who fidgeted were the men who lost.
"I know more than you think," she said. Her voice was steady, surprising even herself. "I've been reviewing the books for the last three days. I found three discrepancies in your quarterly reports, Marco."
The silver-haired man went still.
"You've been skimming," she continued. "Small amounts, spread across different accounts. Enough to avoid notice, but not enough to hide from someone who knows what to look for."
The room went silent. Franco shifted, his eyes narrowing with something like respect.
Marco's face reddened. "That's a lie."
"It's not." Rosa pulled a folder from her bag and slid it across the table. "The evidence is there. I can present it to the family council, or we can handle this privately. Your choice."
Andrew's hand settled on her shoulder. A warning, or a reward. She couldn't tell which.
Marco stared at the folder. His hands were trembling.
"You're her father's daughter after all," he said finally.
"I am."
The tension broke. The other captains exchanged glances, reassessing. Rosa kept her expression neutral, but inside, her heart was pounding so hard she thought it might crack her ribs.
The meeting continued for another hour. Rosa answered questions about the business, about her plans for the organization, about her relationship with Andrew. She deflected where she needed to, deferred when it was strategic, and asserted herself when the moment called for it.
By the time the last captain left, she was exhausted and exhilarated.
Franco lingered at the door. "Not bad, kid."
"Don't call me kid."
He grinned, a rare sight. "Fair enough."
The door closed behind him, and they were alone.
Andrew turned her chair to face him. He loomed over her, his eyes dark, his breathing uneven.
"You did well," he said.
"I know."
"You're shaking."
She looked down at her hands. He was right. The tremors were fine, barely visible, but they were there.
"It's the adrenaline," she said.
"No. It's the power. You felt it."
She had. In that moment with Marco, when she had laid out his betrayal, she had felt something shift inside her. A hunger she hadn't known existed. A need not just to survive, but to win.
"I want to feel something else," she said.
Andrew's jaw tightened. "What?"
"You. Now."
He didn't wait. He pulled her to her feet and pressed her against the wall. The impact knocked the breath from her lungs, but she didn't care. His mouth was on hers, hard and demanding, and she met him with equal force.
His hands found her hips, lifting her. She wrapped her legs around his waist, the dress riding up, the cool wall against her back a sharp contrast to the heat of his body.
"You have no idea what you do to me," he growled against her throat.
"Show me."
He bit down on her shoulder, not hard enough to break skin, but enough to make her gasp. His hands moved to her thighs, spreading them wider, and she felt the hard length of him pressing against her through the layers of clothing.
"I watched you in there," he said. "The way you handled them. The way you owned the room."
"And?"
"And I wanted to take you right there. On the table. In front of all of them."
The image sent a rush of heat through her. "Why didn't you?"
"Because you deserved to finish. To prove yourself."
"I proved myself."
"You did." His hand slid between her legs, finding the wet heat of her through her underwear. "Now I'm going to reward you."
He pushed the fabric aside and entered her with one rough thrust. She cried out, her head falling back against the wall. He was thick and hard, filling her in a way that made her feel claimed, owned, wanted.
"Look at me," he commanded.
She forced her eyes open. His face was inches from hers, his expression fierce, his pupils blown wide.
"You're mine," he said. "Not the syndicate's. Not your father's. Mine."
"Yes."
He began to move, a punishing rhythm that drove her higher with each stroke. The wall scraped against her back, but she didn't feel it. All she felt was him, the pressure building inside her, the heat coiling low in her belly.
"Andrew."
"Say my name again."
"Andrew. Please."
"Please what?"
"Don't stop."
He didn't. He drove into her harder, faster, his breath hot against her ear. She could feel herself climbing toward the edge, her body trembling, her nails digging into his shoulders.
"Come for me," he said. "Now."
She shattered. The orgasm ripped through her, wave after wave of pleasure that left her gasping. He followed moments later, his body tensing, a low groan escaping his throat as he buried himself deep inside her.
They stayed like that for a long moment, breathing together, the sweat cooling on their skin.
He pulled back slowly, lowering her to the ground. Her legs were weak, and she leaned against him for support.
"That was..."
"Not the last time," he said. "Not by a long shot."
She smiled, a real smile, the first one in days. "Good."
He brushed a strand of hair from her face. "You're different."
"I know."
"Is that a problem?"
She thought about it. About the woman she had been a week ago, the quiet accountant who had never raised her voice, who had never taken what she wanted. That woman was still there, but she was changing. Growing.
"No," she said. "It's not a problem."
Andrew's hand found hers, his fingers intertwining with her own. "Come on. There's more to show you."
"More?"
"The villa has a wine cellar. I think you've earned a glass."
She laughed, the sound surprising her. "I think I have."
As they walked out of the council room, Rosa glanced back at the table where she had faced her father's captains. She had won. Not just the meeting, but something more. A piece of herself she hadn't known was missing.
And tomorrow, she would win again.
The First Blood
The night air hung thick and salt-laden over the villa. Rosa sat at the desk in the study, her fingers hovering over the keyboard as she stared at the financial records Franco had dropped off an hour ago. Numbers blurred. Her mind kept drifting to Andrew's hands on her in the council room, the way he had pressed her against the wall and taken control with a ferocity that still made her thighs clench.
Three days since that meeting. Three days of shared meals where Andrew watched her with that burning gaze. Nights where he explored her body with methodical patience but never pushed for more. He was waiting. She felt it in every restrained touch, every growled command that ended with her gasping but not fully taken.
She wanted more. The admission burned in her chest.
A crash shattered the silence.
Rosa jerked upright as glass exploded somewhere in the villa. Gunfire followed, rapid and sharp, tearing through the quiet night. Her heart slammed against her ribs as shouts erupted from the hallway.
"Stay down!"
Andrew's voice, rough and commanding, came from somewhere close. Then his body was there, blocking the doorway, a gun in each hand as he barked orders into his earpiece. His suit jacket was gone. The white shirt stretched across his shoulders as he moved with lethal precision.
"Franco, secure the east wing. Marco, get the perimeter locked down." His eyes found hers across the room. "Rosa, get under the desk. Now."
She moved before the command fully registered, sliding beneath the heavy mahogany as more gunfire erupted. The study window shattered, spraying glass across the floor. She pressed herself against the desk leg, her breath coming in short panicked gasps.
This was real. This was the world she had inherited.
Andrew moved like water, like shadow. She watched through the gap as he returned fire, his aim steady, his face a mask of cold fury. Two men fell before they made it through the window. A third crumpled as Andrew's bullet found his chest.
"Three down on the west side," he said into the earpiece. "I need a sweep. Now."
The gunfire faded to sporadic shots, then silence. Rosa's ears rang. Her hands trembled as she gripped the desk leg, trying to slow her breathing.
Andrew crossed to her in three long strides. He crouched, his eyes scanning her body, checking for wounds. "Are you hit?"
She shook her head, unable to form words.
His hand cupped her jaw, tilting her face up. His thumb traced her cheek, leaving a smear of blood that wasn't hers. "Look at me, Rosa."
She met his eyes. The hazel burned with something beyond rage. Fear. He had been afraid. For her.
"I'm okay," she whispered.
His jaw tightened. He pulled her out from under the desk, his grip firm but careful as he lifted her to her feet. His body blocked hers, a wall of muscle and heat as he scanned the room for threats.
"Franco, report."
"All clear, boss. Four attackers, all dead. No losses on our side."
Andrew's tension didn't ease. He turned to Rosa, his hands moving over her arms, then her ribs, then her hips, checking for injuries with methodical precision. His touch was clinical at first, then lingered. His breath came hard and fast.
"Who were they?" she asked.
"Castellano's men. Rival family testing our borders." His voice was flat, but his hands shook slightly as they gripped her waist. "They wanted to see if the new heir was vulnerable."
"Am I?"
His eyes snapped to hers. The question hung between them, raw and dangerous.
"You're mine," he said. "That makes you the most dangerous thing in this city."
He kissed her then, hard and desperate, nothing like the controlled dominance of before. His mouth claimed hers with a hunger born from adrenaline and fear. She tasted copper. Blood or fury, she didn't know.
His hands fisted in her shirt, pulling her against him as he walked her backward until her spine hit the wall. The impact knocked the air from her lungs, but she didn't care. She needed this. Needed him.
"I could have lost you," he growled against her throat. His teeth grazed her pulse point, and she gasped.
"I'm here. I'm fine."
"You don't understand." His hands slid under her shirt, finding skin, burning against her ribs. "When I heard that glass break, when I thought they might have reached you..."
She saw it then. The crack in his armor. The vulnerability he kept locked behind layers of control. Her hands found his face, forcing him to meet her eyes.
"I'm here, Andrew. I'm not going anywhere."
Something broke in him. His control, his restraint, the careful patience he had maintained since she arrived. He pulled her shirt over her head, his mouth following the path of exposed skin. His hands found the clasp of her bra, and it fell away.
"Tell me you want this," he said, his voice rough. "Tell me you want me."
"I want you. I want all of you."
He lifted her, her legs wrapping around his waist as he carried her to the couch. He laid her down, his body covering hers, the weight of him grounding her in the aftermath of violence.
His mouth traced a path down her neck, across her collarbone, lower. His hands explored with desperate hunger, learning every curve. When his fingers found the waistband of her pants, she arched into his touch.
"Please," she breathed.
He made a sound low in his throat, something between a growl and a groan. His hands worked her pants down her hips, taking her underwear with them. Cool air kissed her heated skin for only a moment before his mouth followed the path his hands had blazed. He kissed the soft skin of her belly, then lower, across her hip, then to her inner thigh.
"Look at me, Rosa."
She did. His eyes were dark, pupils blown wide with want.
He lowered his head between her thighs, and the first stroke of his tongue sent electricity racing up her spine. She gasped, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer. He groaned against her flesh, the vibration of it making her hips buck off the couch.
"Andrew, please..."
He didn't relent. His tongue worked her with devastating precision, circling that swollen bud before dipping lower to taste her more deeply. She was already slick, already aching, and he lapped at her like a man dying of thirst. His hands gripped her thighs, holding her open for him, his fingers digging into the soft flesh hard enough to leave marks.
She felt the pressure building, coiling low in her belly, tightening with every stroke of his tongue. He sensed it too, felt the way her body tensed beneath him, and he doubled his efforts. Two fingers slid inside her, curling upward to find that spot that made her vision blur.
"Come for me," he commanded against her, his voice ragged. "Let me feel you."
The orgasm crashed through her like a wave, cresting and breaking as she shattered against his mouth. She cried out his name, her thighs clamping around his head as the pleasure rippled through her in waves. He worked her through it, his tongue gentling as the aftershocks faded, until she lay trembling beneath him.
He rose over her, his shirt already gone, his chest heaving. She could see the evidence of his arousal straining against his pants, the fabric stretched tight. He made quick work of the button and zipper, shoving the material down just enough to free himself. He was thick and hard, the tip already glistening.
"I need to be inside you. Now."
"Yes."
He moved over her, the weight of his body pressing her into the cushions. She felt him against her entrance, hot and insistent, and her breath caught in anticipation. He paused, just for a moment, his eyes locked on hers.
"This might not be gentle," he warned.
"I don't want gentle. I want you."
He entered her in one smooth thrust, and she cried out at the fullness of it. He was thick enough that her body resisted for a moment before yielding, stretching around him as he filled her completely. He stilled, giving her a moment to adjust, his forehead pressed to hers.
"You feel..." He shook his head, unable to find words.
She moved beneath him, rolling her hips experimentally, and he groaned. His hands found hers, fingers lacing together as he pinned them above her head. His hips began to move, slow at first, pulling almost completely out before sliding back in deep. Each thrust drove her deeper into the couch, deeper into the sensation of being claimed.
The rhythm was primal, desperate, born from the brush with death and the need to reaffirm life. She met him thrust for thrust, her nails digging into his shoulders as he picked up speed. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the room, obscene and beautiful.
"Andrew..."
He shifted, the angle changing, and pleasure sparked through her like lightning. She gasped, her back arching as he hit that spot deep inside her again and again. His free hand gripped her hip, tilting her up to meet him more fully, and the new depth made her see stars.
"You're so tight," he growled against her ear. "So wet for me. I can feel you squeezing me every time I thrust."
She couldn't respond with words. Only sounds, gasps and moans that he swallowed with his mouth over hers. His tongue tangled with hers, mimicking the rhythm of their bodies below.
He released her hands to brace himself on the couch arm, changing the angle again. The new position let him drive deeper, harder, each thrust punctuated by the slap of skin against skin. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him closer, needing more.
"Come for me," he commanded again, his voice ragged. "Come on my cock. Let me feel you."
The second orgasm built like a storm, pressure mounting with every thrust. She felt him thickening inside her, felt his rhythm falter as his own release approached. He reached between them, his fingers finding that swollen bud, and that was all it took.
She shattered around him, her inner walls clenching and rippling as the climax tore through her. He followed moments later, his body shuddering as he buried himself to the hilt, his groan lost against her throat. She felt him pulse inside her, felt the heat of his release flooding her, and the intimacy of it made her eyes sting.
They lay tangled together, breathing hard, the scent of sex and gunpowder mixing in the air. His weight was a comfort, a shield against the world outside.
"Rosa." His voice was soft now, almost tender. "I will never let anyone hurt you."
She believed him.
She traced the scars on his chest, the evidence of a life lived in violence. "I know."
He shifted, rolling to his side and pulling her with him. His arm wrapped around her, possessive and protective. "This is what you signed up for. The danger, the blood. It doesn't stop."
"I'm not afraid."
He searched her eyes, looking for the lie. He found none.
"You should be."
"Maybe." She pressed a kiss to his chest, over his heart. "But I'm more afraid of never feeling this alive."
His arms tightened around her, and for a long moment, neither spoke. The distant sounds of cleanup filtered through the broken window, but inside the study, they existed in their own world.
"I meant what I said," he murmured against her hair. "You're mine. And I protect what's mine."
"Then teach me," she said. "Teach me to protect myself. To protect what's ours."
He pulled back, surprise flickering in his eyes. "You want to learn?"
"I want to be your equal. Not just in name."
Something shifted in his gaze. Respect. Pride. "Tomorrow. I'll start training you myself."
She smiled, a small thing, but real. "Good."
He kissed her forehead, a gesture so gentle it contrasted sharply with the violence of the night. "Rest now. I'll keep watch."
She closed her eyes, letting the steady beat of his heart lull her toward sleep. For the first time since her father's death, she felt safe. Not because of the walls or the guards, but because of the man holding her.
Outside, the night settled into an uneasy quiet. But inside the villa, something new had been forged. A bond sealed in blood and passion, stronger than any contract or alliance.
Rosa Vitale was no longer just an heir. She was a partner, a protector, a queen in the making.
And Andrew Briggs would burn the world before letting her fall.
The Numbers Game
The study smelled of old paper and leather, a familiar scent that usually brought Rosa comfort. But tonight, the ledgers spread across the mahogany desk made her stomach churn. She had been going through them for what felt like an eternity, her accounting mind picking apart every transaction, every deposit, every withdrawal. Something was wrong.
She traced the numbers with her finger, following the trail of money from the legitimate shipping company to a shell account. The amounts were small enough to avoid notice, but consistent. Monthly. For the past year. Someone was skimming from the family.
Her heart pounded as she cross-referenced the account names. Franco's cousin. The man Andrew trusted to run the east side operations. She sat back in the leather chair, her mind racing. This discovery changed everything. It meant the betrayal was inside their own ranks. It meant she had found something Andrew missed.
The door opened and Andrew walked in, his dark suit immaculate, his hazel eyes scanning the room before settling on her. "You've been in here all night."
"I found something." Rosa's voice was steady, but she felt the tremor in her hands. She pushed the ledger toward him. "Look at these payments. They don't match the invoices."
Andrew came around the desk, his presence overwhelming in the small space. He leaned over, his shoulder brushing hers as he examined the numbers. She watched his face, saw the moment his brow furrowed, the moment he saw it too.
"Where did you find this?" His voice was low, a dangerous edge creeping in.
"Line by line. I compared the shipping manifests with the bank records. The amounts are off by three percent on every shipment. Small enough to miss unless you're looking for it." She pulled out another sheet. "I traced the difference to a shell company. It's registered to Marco Bellini."
Andrew's jaw tightened. "Franco's cousin."
"Yes." She met his eyes. "He's been taking from us. For at least a year."
Andrew stared at the papers, then at her. Something shifted in his expression. Not anger, not frustration. Admiration. "I've had my best men on the books for months. They didn't catch this."
"They weren't looking for it." Rosa felt a surge of confidence. "I was."
He reached out, his fingers brushing her cheek. "You're not what I expected, Rosa."
"Neither are you." She leaned into his touch, her eyes never leaving his. "What do we do about Marco?"
"We handle it." His thumb traced her jawline. "But not tonight. Tonight, I want to focus on you."
Rosa's breath caught. She had been so focused on the numbers, on the betrayal, that she hadn't realized how much she needed this. Needed him. She turned her head, pressing a kiss to his palm. "I want to lead tonight."
Andrew's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing his features. Then a slow smile spread across his lips. "Is that so?"
"Yes." She stood, her body brushing against his. "I found something important. I want to celebrate."
"And how do you want to celebrate?" His voice was rough, curious.
She reached up, unbuttoning his jacket, pushing it off his shoulders. "I want to explore you. I want to take my time." She looked up at him, her brown eyes dark with desire. "I want you to let me."
Andrew's hands came up to her waist, but he didn't grip. He rested them there, waiting. "I'm yours tonight, Rosa. Do what you want with me."
The words sent a thrill through her. She took his hand, leading him out of the study and down the hall to the master bedroom. The room was dim, lit only by the moonlight streaming through the windows. She turned to face him, her fingers working the buttons of his shirt.
He stood still, letting her undress him. She pushed the shirt off his shoulders, revealing the broad expanse of his chest, the network of scars that told stories she was only beginning to understand. She traced one with her finger, a long line that ran from his collarbone to his ribs.
"Who gave you this?" she asked softly.
"A man who's no longer breathing." His voice was steady, but she felt the tension in his muscles.
She leaned in, pressing her lips to the scar. Then another. Then another. She kissed each one, a slow worshipful exploration of his body. His breath hitched, his hands clenching at his sides.
"You don't have to hold back," she whispered against his skin. "I want to hear you."
She pushed him gently onto the bed, and he went, lying back on the dark silk sheets. She stood over him, drinking in the sight. He was magnificent, all hard muscle and controlled power. But tonight, he was hers to command.
She undressed slowly, letting her dress fall to the floor. She saw his eyes darken, his hands twitching as if he wanted to reach for her. But he didn't. He waited.
She climbed onto the bed, straddling his hips. The heat of his body seeped into her, the hardness of him pressing against her core. She leaned down, kissing him deeply, her tongue sliding against his. He groaned into her mouth, his hands coming up to her hips.
"Not yet," she murmured, pulling back. "I'm in charge."
He nodded, his jaw tight, his eyes burning. She moved down his body, kissing his chest, his stomach, his hips. She took him in her hand, feeling the weight of him, the heat. She lowered her head, taking him into her mouth.
Andrew's breath came in sharp gasps, his hands fisting in the sheets. "Rosa..."
She looked up at him, her mouth still working, her eyes meeting his. She saw the struggle in his gaze, the desire to take control warring with his promise to let her lead. She slowed, teasing him, drawing out every sensation.
When she finally rose up, positioning herself over him, he was trembling. She reached down, guiding him to her entrance, then sank down slowly, taking him inch by inch. The sensation was overwhelming, the fullness of him stretching her, filling her.
She began to move, setting a slow, deliberate rhythm. Her hands pressed against his chest, her hips rolling in a figure eight. Andrew's eyes were fixed on her, his hands gripping her thighs but not guiding her.
"You're beautiful," he rasped. "So fucking beautiful."
She leaned forward, her breasts brushing his chest, her mouth near his ear. "I want to feel you come apart."
She increased her pace, riding him harder, her breath coming in sharp cries. She felt the coil building in her belly, the heat spreading through her. She closed her eyes, letting the sensation take her, and when she came, she cried out his name.
Andrew's control shattered. He gripped her hips, thrusting up into her, his own release following moments later. He groaned, long and low, his body shuddering beneath her.
She collapsed onto his chest, her heart pounding against his. His arms came around her, holding her close, his lips pressing kisses to her hair.
"That was..." He paused, searching for words. "I've never let anyone take control before."
She lifted her head, meeting his eyes. "I know."
"You're different, Rosa." He brushed a strand of hair from her face. "You make me want to give you everything."
She smiled, a soft, satisfied curve of her lips. "Then give me your trust."
"You have it." His voice was firm, certain. "You've earned it."
They lay together in the quiet, the moonlight painting silver patterns on their skin. Rosa's mind drifted back to the ledgers, to Marco Bellini. "We need to decide what to do about him."
Andrew's hand stilled on her back. "I'll handle it. Tomorrow."
"I want to be there." She pushed herself up, looking at him. "I'm not just a figurehead anymore, Andrew. I'm your partner."
He studied her, a slow smile spreading across his face. "No, you're not. You're so much more." He pulled her down, kissing her forehead. "Tomorrow, we'll deal with Marco together."
She settled against him, her ear over his heart, listening to the steady beat. For the first time since her father's death, she felt like she belonged. Not as a daughter, not as a wife, but as herself. Rosalind Vitale, heir to a syndicate, partner to the most dangerous man in Miami.
And she was just getting started.
The Whisper Campaign
The rumors arrived before Rosa did, carried on the humid Miami air like poison seeds. She felt them in the way the household staff avoided her eyes that morning, in the hushed voices that fell silent when she entered the kitchen. Franco's tight jaw said the rest as he briefed Andrew on the morning's intelligence.
"Three captains," Franco said, his voice low and rough. "Martinez, Gallo, and De Decker. They've been talking to the crews, saying the Vitale name means nothing without a man behind it. That you're just a placeholder until someone takes what's yours."
Rosa stood in the doorway of Andrew's study, her fingers pressed against the frame. The words hit like a physical blow, cold and sharp. She had expected resistance. She had not expected to be dismissed so completely.
Andrew's jaw tightened. A muscle pulsed along his cheek, the only crack in his composure. "And what do the crews say back?"
"Some listen. Some don't. But the whispers are spreading. They say she's soft. That she hides behind you." Franco glanced at Rosa, his weathered face unreadable. "I'm just telling you what I hear."
Andrew rose from his chair, the movement fluid and dangerous. "Then we'll give them something else to talk about."
Rosa stepped forward, her heart hammering. "What are you going to do?"
He crossed to her, his palm settling on her waist with familiar possessiveness. "I'm going to show them exactly who you are."
She wanted to argue, to tell him she could handle this herself. But the truth was she didn't know how. Her skills were in ledgers and spreadsheets, not in commanding the loyalty of hardened men. She needed him. And that knowledge burned.
The gathering was held at one of the syndicate's warehouses, a cavernous space of concrete and steel. Men in dark suits lined the walls, their eyes tracking Rosa as she walked in on Andrew's arm. She wore a deep burgundy dress that hugged her curves, her hair swept over one shoulder. She had chosen the outfit deliberately, a small act of defiance. Let them see she wasn't hiding.
Andrew guided her to the center of the room, his palm firm on her lower back. The crowd parted, whispers trailing behind them like smoke.
"You don't have to say anything," he murmured against her ear. "Just stand beside me. Let them see you."
She nodded, her throat thick. The weight of a dozen gazes pressed down on her, each one a judgment. She could feel their skepticism, their dismissal. She was a woman in a man's world, an accountant in a kingdom of killers.
Andrew raised his hand, and the room fell silent. His voice carried, deep and commanding. "I've heard the whispers. I've heard the doubts." He paused, his gaze sweeping the crowd. "Let me be clear. Rosa Vitale is not a placeholder. She is not a figurehead. She is the heir to this empire, chosen by her father, and she is my wife."
Someone in the back muttered something. Andrew's eyes snapped to the sound, cold and lethal. "You have something to say, Gallo?"
A heavyset man stepped forward, his face flushed. "I'm just saying, Mr. Briggs, that respect has to be earned. No offense to Mrs. Vitale, but what has she done? She's never fired a gun. Never made a deal. She's an accountant."
Rosa felt the words like a slap. She opened her mouth to respond, but Andrew spoke first.
"She found the leak in your books," he said, his voice soft and dangerous. "She traced the missing money back to your cousin. She gave me the proof that saved this family from a war." He stepped closer to Gallo, his presence overwhelming. "What have you done lately, besides talk?"
Gallo's face went pale. He looked at Rosa, then back at Andrew. "I... I didn't know."
"Now you do." Andrew's fingers laced through Rosa's, claiming her hand in front of every man in the room. "Anyone else have doubts about my wife's place in this family?"
Silence. The men shifted, avoiding eye contact. Rosa felt a surge of something warm and fierce in her chest. He had defended her. Not with violence, but with truth. He had made them see her value.
Later, in the car, she sat close to him, her head resting on his shoulder. "Thank you," she whispered. "For what you said. For standing up for me."
His palm settled on her thigh, warm and heavy. "I didn't say anything that wasn't true."
"Still. It meant something. To hear you say it."
He was quiet for a moment, his thumb tracing small circles on her skin. "They're wrong about you, Rosa. You're not weak. You're not soft. You're the strongest person I know."
She looked up at him, her eyes shining. "I don't feel strong. I feel like I'm pretending."
"That's what strength is," he said, his voice low. "Pretending until you don't have to anymore."
The villa was quiet when they arrived, the security team a distant presence. Andrew led her through the halls, his grip on her fingers never loosening. He stopped at the door to their bedroom, turning to face her.
"I want to show you something," he said. "I want to show you what I see."
She nodded, her breath catching. He guided her inside, closing the door behind them. The room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of the lamps. He stood before her, his hands moving to her shoulders, sliding the straps of her dress down.
"You're beautiful," he said, his voice rough. "But it's not just that. It's the way you hold yourself. The way you walk into a room full of men who want to tear you down and you don't flinch."
He eased the dress down her body, his fingers trailing over her skin. She shivered, her hands rising to his chest. The fabric pooled at her feet, leaving her in nothing but a thin slip of lace beneath. His gaze traveled over her slowly, drinking her in like a man who had been wandering the desert.
"I see the way you think," he continued, his lips brushing her ear. "The way you solve problems. The way you trusted me even when you had no reason to."
He guided her to the bed, laying her back against the silk sheets. He stood over her, his eyes dark with want, but his movements were slow, deliberate. Worshipful. He pulled the slip over her head, leaving her bare beneath him. The cool air kissed her skin, but his gaze was warmer than any blanket.
"I see the woman who took a bullet for this family," he said, his voice cracking slightly. "The woman who bled for me and didn't break."
He lowered himself over her, his mouth finding her throat. He kissed her there, soft and lingering, as if he had all the time in the world. His hands moved over her body, not with urgency but with reverence, learning the dip of her waist, the flare of her hips, the soft skin of her inner thighs.
"I see you, Rosa," he whispered against her collarbone. "Not the heir. Not the accountant. You."
She gasped as his mouth found her breast, his tongue circling her nipple before drawing it between his lips. The sensation shot straight through her, pooling low in her belly. Her fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him closer. He took his time, lavishing attention on each breast in turn, his teeth grazing the sensitive peaks just enough to make her whimper. His hands stroked her thighs, her hips, the curve of her waist, mapping her like territory he intended to claim slowly and thoroughly.
He moved lower, his lips trailing a path down her stomach. She trembled, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps. He pressed kisses to her hip bones, to the soft skin of her inner thighs, taking his time, making her wait. When he finally settled between her legs, his eyes met hers.
"Let me worship you," he said, his voice a low growl. "Let me show you what you're worth."
She nodded, unable to speak. He lowered his head, his mouth finding her core. The first touch of his tongue sent a shock through her, a wave of heat that spread from her center to her fingertips. He was slow, methodical, tracing patterns that made her arch against him. His tongue circled her clit with deliberate patience, then dipped lower, tasting her deeply before returning to that sensitive bundle of nerves.
Her hands fisted in the sheets, her hips rising to meet his mouth. He pressed his palms against her thighs, holding her open, holding her still. The contrast between his firm grip and the softness of his tongue drove her wild. She could feel the pressure building, coiling tight inside her.
He brought her to the edge twice, pulling back each time, drawing out the pleasure until she was trembling and desperate. She cried out his name, her back bowing off the bed.
"Please," she begged. "Andrew, please. I can't take much more."
He lifted his head, his chin glistening, his eyes dark with hunger. "Not yet. I'm not done showing you."
He moved up her body, his weight settling over her. He kissed her, deep and slow, letting her taste herself on his lips. She moaned into his mouth, her legs wrapping around his waist, pulling him closer. She could feel how hard he was against her thigh, the heat of him, the restraint it must have cost him to move this slowly.
He reached between them, positioning himself at her entrance. He paused there, the tip of him just barely pressing against her, and looked into her eyes.
"You feel that?" he asked, his voice strained. "That's what you do to me. You undo me, Rosa. Every single time."
He entered her in one smooth motion, filling her completely. She gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders, her body stretching to accommodate him. He stilled, giving her time to adjust, his forehead pressed to hers. She could feel his breath, ragged and uneven, could feel the tension in his muscles as he held himself in check.
He began to move, slow and deep, each thrust a declaration. He watched her face, reading her pleasure, adjusting his rhythm to match her gasps and moans. When she arched into him, he went deeper. When she whimpered, he slowed. He whispered to her between kisses, words of praise and devotion, telling her how strong she was, how beautiful, how much he needed her. How she was the only thing in his life that had ever mattered.
She pulled him closer, her nails raking down his back, and his control frayed. His thrusts came faster, harder, but still with that same intent. Each one felt like a promise, like he was branding himself into her very bones. The pressure built inside her again, a slow, rolling wave that crested and broke. She came with a cry, her body clenching around him, pulling him deeper. He followed moments later, his groan muffled against her throat as he spilled himself inside her, his body shuddering with the force of it.
They lay tangled together, their breathing ragged. Rosa's palm rested on his chest, feeling the steady thump of his heart slow from its racing pace. She felt raw, exposed, but not weak. She felt seen. Every inch of her, inside and out.
"I love you," she whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
He went still. Then his arms tightened around her, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them. "I love you too," he said, his voice rough. "I've loved you since the night you walked into that warehouse and didn't run."
She smiled against his skin, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I'm not running anymore."
He kissed her forehead, his fingers stroking through her hair. "I know. And I'll be right here, every step of the way."
She closed her eyes, letting the warmth of his words wash over her. The whispers would come again. The doubts would surface. But she had something they didn't. She had him. And she had herself.
And that was enough.
The Shared Burden
The study smelled of old leather and her father's cologne. Rosa traced the edge of his desk, her fingers following the grain of the mahogany. She had spent hours in this room as a girl, watching him work, never understanding the weight he carried. Now she understood too much.
"You shouldn't be in here alone."
Andrew's voice came from the doorway. She didn't turn around.
"I needed to think."
"That's what the terrace is for. Or the library. Not a dead man's office."
She finally looked at him. He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. But his eyes held something soft beneath the steel.
"He's not just a dead man," she said. "He's my father. And I barely knew him."
Andrew pushed off the frame and walked toward her. Each step was deliberate, measured. He stopped a foot away, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body.
"You knew enough to love him. That's what matters."
"Is it? Because I'm starting to think I loved a ghost. A version of him he let me see." She picked up a paperweight from the desk, turning it over in her hands. "He never told me about any of this. The syndicate, the danger, everything he kept hidden." Her voice cracked. "I don't even know who he really was."
Andrew was quiet for a long moment. Then he reached out and gently took the paperweight from her hands, setting it back on the desk. His fingers brushed hers, and she felt warmth spread up her arm.
"Your father was the most complicated man I ever met," he said. "He built an empire from nothing, kept secrets even from himself. But he loved you more than any of it."
"How do you know?"
"Because he told me. Before he died."
Rosa's breath caught. "He spoke about me?"
"All the time. Every conversation, somehow it came back to you. Your grades, the way you laughed when you thought no one was watching, even your job." Andrew's voice dropped lower. "He said you were the only good thing he ever made."
Tears burned her eyes. She blinked them back. "Then why didn't he tell me about all this? Why didn't he prepare me?"
"He wanted to protect you. Keep you clean of it." Andrew's jaw tightened. "He told me once that if anything happened to him, I was to take care of you. That I was the only one he trusted."
"Why you?" The question came out raw, honest. "Why did he trust you so completely?"
Andrew looked away, his profile sharp against the dim light. "Because I saved his life. Twenty years ago. Before I was his enforcer, I was just a kid from the wrong side of Miami. He found me bleeding in an alley and didn't walk away."
Rosa's heart clenched. She reached for his hand without thinking. "What happened?"
"My father was a drunk. He killed my mother when I was twelve. I ran away, lived on the streets for two years. Got into a fight I couldn't win with some men who didn't like my face." He let out a rough breath. "Your father found me. Took me to a doctor. Gave me a job. A purpose. He didn't just save my life. He gave me one worth living."
She turned his hand over, tracing the scars on his knuckles. "So you've been protecting him all this time."
"And now I'm protecting you." He pulled his hand away, cupping her face instead. His thumb traced her cheekbone. "That's why he trusted me. Because I owe him everything. And because he knew I'd never let anyone hurt you."
"Not even me?" she whispered.
His brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"
Rosa stepped back, needing space to breathe. She wrapped her arms around herself. "I'm afraid, Andrew. I'm afraid I'll become him. That I'll lose myself in this world and wake up one day as a stranger to myself." She swallowed hard. "I don't want to be his shadow. I want to be my own person. But I don't know how to do that when everyone looks at me and sees him."
Andrew watched her for a long moment. Then he crossed the room and stood before her again. He didn't touch her, but his presence was overwhelming.
"You're not him," he said simply. "He was hard. Cold. You feel things. That's not weakness, Rosa. That's strength."
"But I have to be strong to lead."
"You can be both. You are both." He finally reached out and took her hand, pulling her closer. "I see you. Not him. You."
She looked up at him, her vision blurry with unshed tears. "I'm scared I'll disappoint him. And you."
"You won't."
"How can you be so sure?"
He leaned down and pressed his forehead to hers. "Because I know you. I've watched you. You fight for what you want. You care about the people around you. You're not afraid to be vulnerable." His lips brushed hers. "That's what makes you strong."
She kissed him then. Soft and desperate. He answered with equal tenderness, his hands sliding into her hair, cradling her skull like she was precious. And in that moment, she felt precious. Not because of her name or her inheritance. Because of how he looked at her.
The kiss deepened slowly, without urgency. His tongue traced her lower lip, asking permission. She gave it freely, opening to him. The taste of him was familiar now, comforting. He tasted like coffee and something darker, like the night itself.
His hands moved down her back, pressing her against him. She felt his heart beating steady against her chest. It grounded her. Reminded her that this was real.
She pulled back just enough to whisper, "I don't want to stop."
"We don't have to." His voice was rough. "We can take all night."
"Yes. Please."
He took her hand and led her out of the study, through the hall, up the stairs to the master bedroom. The room was dimly lit by a single lamp on the nightstand. The bed was huge, covered in white sheets that seemed to glow in the low light.
He turned to face her, and they stood there for a moment, just looking at each other. Then, slowly, he reached for the buttons of her blouse.
"May I?" he asked.
The question undid her. She nodded, unable to speak.
He undid each button with deliberate care, his knuckles brushing her skin. When the blouse fell open, he slid it off her shoulders and let it drop to the floor. His eyes traveled down her body, and she felt her skin flush under his gaze.
"Beautiful," he murmured.
She reached for his tie, her fingers clumsy but determined. He let her undo it, let her work the buttons of his shirt. When she pushed the fabric aside, she saw the scars she had traced before, the map of a hard life written on his skin. She pressed her palm flat against his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heart.
"You saved him," she said softly. "And now you're saving me."
"No." He caught her hand, brought it to his lips. "You're saving yourself. I'm just here to help."
He guided her to the bed. She lay back on the cool sheets, watching him undress. He moved with economy, shedding his clothes until he stood before her, naked and unashamed. The lamplight played over the ridges of his muscles, the shadows pooling in the hollows of his hips. His cock was hard, thick, rising against his stomach. She couldn't look away.
He joined her on the bed, not with the predatory swiftness she expected but with a gentleness that made her eyes sting. He stretched out beside her, propped on one elbow, and looked down at her.
"Tell me what you want," he said.
"I want to feel close to you. I want to forget everything else."
He nodded slowly. "Then let me take care of you."
His hand traced down her side, over the curve of her hip, her thigh. He explored her like he was memorizing her, each touch measured and unhurried. She arched into his palm, wanting more.
"Patience," he whispered, but his own breathing was growing ragged.
He kissed her again, deeper this time, and she felt his hand slide between her thighs. She was already wet for him, ready. He groaned against her mouth when he felt her.
"You're so ready for me."
"I'm always ready for you."
His fingers found her clit, circling slowly, teasing, while he kissed her neck. She gasped, her hips bucking against his hand. But he didn't speed up. He kept the pace languid, torturous, drawing out each sensation until she was trembling.
"Please," she breathed.
"Not yet."
He moved down her body, kissing her throat, her collarbone, the swell of her breasts. When he took her nipple in his mouth, she cried out, her fingers tangling in his hair. He sucked gently, then harder, then soothed the ache with his tongue. She felt the pull of it deep in her belly, a thread connecting her nipple to her core. He moved to the other breast, giving it the same attention, and she writhed beneath him.
She felt his hand between her legs again, two fingers sliding inside her. She was so wet that they slid in easily. He curled them, hitting that spot that made her see stars, and she moaned his name.
"Andrew, please, I need..."
"I know what you need." He kissed down her stomach, settling between her thighs. "Let me give it to you."
His mouth found her center, and she bucked against his face. He laved her with his tongue, thorough and unhurried, like he was savoring a fine meal. His fingers still worked inside her, curling and stroking while his tongue circled her clit. She felt the tension build in her belly, a coil winding tighter and tighter.
"Don't stop," she begged.
He didn't. He worked her with his tongue and fingers, bringing her to the edge and then pulling back, over and over, until she was a mess of need and desperation. Each time she thought she would break, he eased off, letting the wave recede before building it again. Her thighs trembled on either side of his head. Her fingers clutched the sheets.
"Come for me," he said against her. "Let go."
And she did. The orgasm ripped through her, not violent but deep, like a river breaking its banks. She cried out, her body arching, and he drank her in, not stopping until she was spent and trembling. The aftershocks rippled through her for long moments, and he stayed with her through each one, his tongue gentler now, coaxing the last tremors from her body.
He crawled up her body, kissing her gently. She tasted herself on his lips, musky and sweet.
"That was..." she started.
"Just the beginning."
He kissed her again, and she could feel his arousal pressing against her thigh, hard and hot. She reached down, wrapping her fingers around him. He groaned into her mouth, his hips jerking forward.
"I want you inside me," she said.
"Not yet." His voice was strained. "I want to make this last."
She stroked him slowly, feeling the silk of him, the rigid heat. He was thick in her hand, and she could feel him pulse against her palm. He groaned again, his forehead dropping to her shoulder.
"You're going to kill me," he muttered.
"Not yet," she echoed, and he laughed, low and rough.
He caught her wrist, stilling her hand. "I can't take much of that."
He positioned himself above her, and she felt the head of his cock pressing against her entrance. He looked into her eyes, and she saw everything there. His devotion and his fear, and beneath it all, his love.
"I'm yours," she whispered.
He pushed inside her, deep and unhurried, filling her completely. She gasped at the fullness, the stretch of him inside her. He paused, letting her adjust, his forehead pressed to hers, their breath mingling.
"You feel like home," he said.
Then he began to move, and it was like a prayer. Each thrust was measured, deliberate, meant to connect rather than conquer. She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, and he groaned, burying his face in her neck. She could feel every inch of him, the way he filled her, the way her body opened to him like it was made for this.
They moved together in a rhythm that felt ancient, primal, but tender. She felt the tears on her cheeks but didn't know when she had started crying. He kissed them away, whispering her name like a mantra.
"I'm here," he said. "I'm not going anywhere."
"I know. I know."
He shifted his angle, and the friction changed. She felt it in her core now, each thrust rubbing against that spot inside her. She gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders.
"Right there," she breathed. "Don't stop."
He didn't. He kept the pace steady, grinding into her with each thrust. She felt the pressure building again, different from before, deeper. It swelled inside her like a wave, and she let it take her, crying out his name. The orgasm crashed through her, and she clenched around him, pulling him deeper.
He followed moments later, his body shuddering against hers, his release hot inside her. She felt him pulse, felt the warmth flood her, and she held him close, her legs locked around him, not wanting to let go.
He collapsed beside her, pulling her into his arms. She lay against his chest, listening to his heartbeat slow. His hand stroked her hair, gentle and rhythmic.
"Do you feel it?" he asked.
"What?"
"You're not his shadow. You're my equal. My partner. The one I can't live without."
She looked up at him, and for the first time since her father died, she felt something like peace.
"I think I'm starting to believe that."
He kissed her forehead. "Good. Because we're just getting started."
She smiled, small and real. "I know."
They lay there in the quiet dark, wrapped in each other, and the weight of her father's legacy felt a little lighter. She wasn't his shadow anymore. She was her own light, and Andrew had helped her see it.
She fell asleep in his arms, feeling safe for the first time in months.
And in the morning, when she woke to find him watching her, she knew she had found her home.
The Shoreline War
The call came at midnight. Andrew's phone buzzed once, a single sharp vibration that cut through the dark bedroom like a blade. He was out of bed before Rosa could fully wake, his body already shifting into something harder, more dangerous.
"What is it?" she asked, sitting up and reaching for the lamp.
"Don't." His voice was flat. Controlled. "Stay here."
But she was already pulling on clothes. She had been in this world long enough to recognize the shift in him, the way his shoulders squared and his jaw tightened. This wasn't a drill. This was real.
Franco met them at the bottom of the stairs, his face grim in the dim light of the villa's security room. Monitors lined the wall, showing different angles of the property. But it was the main screen that caught Rosa's attention. A live feed from a drone hovering over the shoreline a mile from the estate. Figures moved in the dark, at least a dozen of them, carrying equipment that glinted dully in the moonlight.
"They're coming for the new shipment," Franco said. "Our intel says they plan to hit the dock in the early hours. They think they can take the territory while you're still settling into your marriage."
Andrew's knuckles went white as he gripped the edge of the console. "They're wrong."
Rosa felt something cold settle in her chest. Not fear. Not anymore. She had felt fear before, in the early days when she didn't understand the world she had inherited. Now she felt something else. A quiet certainty.
"I'm coming with you."
Andrew turned, his eyes blazing in the low light. "No."
"Yes." She stepped closer, refusing to back down. "I'm not a liability anymore, Andrew. I know the territory. I know the players. If I stay here, I'll be a target anyway. At least with you, I can see what's coming."
He stared at her for a long moment. She could see the war in his gaze, the protective instinct battling against something else. Respect, maybe. Or recognition of the woman she was becoming.
"Fine." The word came out like a curse. "But you stay behind me. You do exactly what I say. And if I tell you to run, you run. No arguments."
She nodded, already reaching for the tactical vest Franco held out.
The drive to the shoreline took fifteen minutes. Andrew drove, his hands steady on the wheel despite the tension that radiated from him. Rosa sat in the passenger seat, feeling the weight of the vest against her ribs, the unfamiliar press of a small pistol in her waistband. She had trained with it over the past weeks, learning to aim and fire under Franco's patient instruction. But knowing how to shoot and actually shooting at a person were very different things.
They parked a quarter mile from the dock and continued on foot through the dense brush that lined the shore. The moon was half full, casting silver light across the water. Rosa could hear the waves lapping against the sand, a peaceful sound that seemed wrong for what was about to happen.
Andrew stopped at the tree line, scanning the beach ahead. The figures moved near the dock, their voices low and rough as they unloaded crates from a small boat.
"How many?" she whispered.
"Twelve. Maybe thirteen." He handed her an earpiece. "Stay on this frequency. If we get separated, you follow Franco's voice. You don't stop until you're safe."
"We're not getting separated."
He looked at her then, something fierce and tender in his gaze. "No. We're not."
The attack came fast. Andrew moved first, his body a blur of dark fabric and lethal precision. He took down the first two men before they even knew he was there, their bodies hitting the sand with soft thuds. Then the chaos began.
Gunfire erupted from the dock. Rosa pressed herself against a palm tree, her heart hammering as she watched Andrew weave through the attackers, his movements almost too fast to track. He was a force of nature, unstoppable and terrible. But even he couldn't be everywhere at once.
She saw the man flanking him, the one who had circled around through the shadows. He raised his gun, aiming at Andrew's back.
Rosa didn't think. She moved.
Her pistol was in her hand, the grip familiar from hours of practice. She sighted down the barrel, just like Franco had taught her. Steady. Breathe. Squeeze.
The shot cracked through the night.
The man fell, his gun firing wild into the sky as he collapsed. Andrew turned, his gaze finding hers across the chaos. There was surprise in his expression, and something else. Pride.
Then he was moving again, and she was following.
They fought together through the next minutes, a brutal dance of gunfire and hand-to-hand combat. Rosa stayed close to Andrew, using her smaller frame to slip through gaps he created, watching his back as he watched hers. She fired when she had a clear shot, reloaded when he covered her. They moved like they had been doing this for years, not weeks.
When the last man fell, the silence that followed was deafening.
Rosa stood on the sand, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her hands shaking as she lowered the gun. The beach was littered with bodies. Blood soaked into the sand, dark and spreading. The smell of gunpowder and salt water filled her lungs.
Andrew was beside her in an instant, his hands running over her arms, her shoulders. Checking for injuries. His touch was rough, urgent.
"I'm fine," she said, but her voice cracked. "I'm not hurt."
He pulled her against him, his heart pounding against her cheek. She could feel the adrenaline still coursing through him, the heat of his body, the tension that hadn't fully released.
"You saved my life."
"I know."
He pulled back to look at her, his eyes dark with something that made her breath catch. "When I saw you take that shot... I have never wanted anyone the way I wanted you in that moment."
She felt the words hit her like a physical blow. Desire flooded through her, hot and urgent, washing away the cold dread of the battle. She reached up and pulled his mouth down to hers.
The kiss was desperate. Hungry. It tasted of salt and gunpowder, and she didn't care. She needed him. Now.
"Here," she gasped against his lips. "I need you here. On the sand. Where we just fought."
He groaned, his hands already working at the straps of her vest, pulling it off and tossing it aside. Her shirt came next, then her pants, each garment discarded with an urgency that made her pulse race. She was shivering in the night air, but not from cold. From need. From the raw, consuming hunger that had ignited the moment the last man fell.
He pulled off his own shirt, and she reached for him, her fingers tracing the hard planes of his chest, the raised skin of old scars, the rapid beat of his heart beneath her palm. He was warm, impossibly warm, and she pressed herself against him, needing that heat, needing the solid reality of his body after the surreal violence of the past hour.
He laid her down on the sand, the grains rough and cool against her bare back. The waves crashed nearby, a rhythmic counterpoint to their ragged breathing. He looked down at her, his body silhouetted against the moonlit sky, and she saw the war in his expression again. The need to be gentle. The need to take.
"Don't hold back," she said. "I'm not fragile. I just proved that."
He dropped to his knees between her legs, his hands gripping her thighs, thumbs tracing circles on her inner skin that made her gasp. "You proved a lot more than that, Rosa. You proved you're mine. Equally mine. And I need to claim you. Right now."
"Then claim me."
His mouth found her throat, hot and hungry, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin there before moving lower. He kissed a path down her collarbone, between her breasts, across her stomach, each press of his lips deliberate and possessive. She arched into him, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer.
When his mouth found her breast, her back bowed off the sand. He took her nipple between his teeth, teasing it with his tongue, and she cried out, the sensation shooting straight through her. His hand found her other breast, rolling the nipple between his fingers, and the dual sensation made her writhe beneath him.
"Andrew," she gasped, and his name on his lips was both plea and prayer.
He continued his descent, his mouth blazing a trail down her stomach, his tongue dipping into her navel before moving lower. When he reached the junction of her thighs, he paused, his breath hot against her most sensitive flesh.
"Tell me what you want," he said, his voice rough with desire.
"You. I want you. Please."
He parted her with his thumbs, and then his mouth was on her, his tongue swirling in tight circles around the swollen bud of her clit. She screamed, the sensation too intense after the adrenaline of battle, every nerve ending raw and exposed. He licked and sucked, his rhythm steady and relentless, and she could feel the pressure building already, a tight coil of heat low in her belly.
Her hips moved against his mouth, chasing the sensation, and he groaned against her, the vibration adding another layer of pleasure. He slid one finger inside her, then two, curling them upward in a rhythm that matched his tongue, and she shattered.
The orgasm hit her like a wave, crashing over her in pulses that made her whole body shake. She clenched around his fingers, her thighs pressing against his head, and still he didn't stop, drawing out her pleasure until she was trembling and gasping and begging for more.
He rose over her, his face glistening with her arousal, his eyes dark with need. He shed his remaining clothes quickly, and then he was there, the hard length of him pressing against her entrance.
"I need you inside me," she said. "Now. Please."
He entered her in one smooth motion, and she cried out, the sensation overwhelming. He filled her completely, stretching her, and the feeling of being joined after the violence was a kind of salvation. She was still trembling from her first orgasm, and the new sensation pushed her toward another peak almost immediately.
He moved inside her, fast and deep, his rhythm matching the crash of the waves. She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, her nails digging into his shoulders. The sand was everywhere. In her hair, on her skin, grinding against her back. She didn't care. She needed this. Needed him.
"Look at me," he commanded, and she did. His eyes were wild, possessive, burning with a fire that matched her own. "You are mine. In every way that matters. My partner. My equal in every way."
"Yes," she gasped. "Yes. I'm yours. You're mine."
He drove into her harder, faster, his breath ragged in her ear. She could feel the orgasm building again, a pressure that had nothing to do with the battle and everything to do with the man above her. The man who had seen her at her most vulnerable and her most fierce and still wanted her. Still needed her.
He shifted his angle, and the change hit a spot inside her that made her vision blur. She cried out, her nails raking down his back, and he groaned, his pace becoming erratic.
"Come for me," he said, his voice a harsh whisper. "Come for me, Rosa. Let me feel you."
She did. The orgasm crashed through her in waves, her body convulsing around him, pulling him deeper. He followed a moment later, his own release shaking him, his forehead pressed to hers as he groaned her name. She felt him spill inside her, hot and pulsing, and the intimacy of it made her eyes sting with tears.
They lay there for a long moment, tangled together on the sand, breathing in the salt air and the scent of gunpowder that still clung to their skin. The stars were bright overhead, indifferent to the violence that had just occurred.
"Are you okay?" he asked finally, his voice rough.
"I'm better than okay." She turned her head to look at him. "I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."
He smiled, a rare, genuine smile that transformed his face. "You are. You really are."
They dressed in silence, the weight of what had happened settling around them. As they walked back to the car, Franco's voice crackled over the earpiece. "Area secure. No survivors. No witnesses."
"Good," Andrew said. "We're coming in."
In the car, Rosa looked at her hands. They were still shaking, but it wasn't from fear anymore. It was from the realization that she had done something she never thought she could do. She had fought. She had killed. And she didn't regret it.
Andrew reached over and took her hand, his fingers lacing with hers. "You're a natural."
"I had a good teacher."
He squeezed her hand. "Tomorrow, we start planning the next phase. Together. As partners."
She nodded, feeling the truth of his words settle into her bones. She was no longer just the heir. She was the queen. And he was her king.
But for now, they had each other. And that was enough.
The True Union
The chapel smelled of gardenias and old wood, the scent mingling with the salt air that drifted through the open windows. Rosa stood at the threshold, her white dress trailing behind her like a promise. Through the veil, she saw Andrew waiting at the altar, and the world stopped.
He wore a charcoal suit, perfectly tailored, his hair freshly cut. His eyes found hers and held. No smile. Just a look that said everything. He was here. He was hers. She was his.
Aunt Patricia squeezed her hand before letting go. "Walk tall, my queen."
Rosa walked.
The aisle stretched before her, lined with faces she was still learning. Capos and their wives. Franco standing guard at the side. But she saw only him. Andrew. Her husband in truth now, not just in contract.
When she reached him, he took her hand. His fingers were warm, steady. The priest began the ceremony, but Rosa hardly heard the words. She felt them. Every syllable of the vows they exchanged.
"I take you, Rosa, as my wife. My partner. My equal."
His voice was low, rough with emotion. She had never seen him like this. Open. Vulnerable. Hers.
"I take you, Andrew, as my husband. My protector. My heart."
Her voice did not waver.
When the priest pronounced them married, Andrew lifted her veil with careful hands. His eyes were wet. She reached up and touched his face, feeling the slight tremor in his jaw.
"I love you," she whispered.
He kissed her. Soft at first, then deeper, claiming her in front of everyone. She didn't care. She kissed him back, pouring every ounce of herself into it.
The reception was a blur of congratulations and champagne. Rosa smiled, accepted embraces, played the part. But her eyes kept finding Andrew across the room. Each time, his gaze burned hotter.
By the time the last guest had gone, the villa was quiet, the staff dismissed. Rosa stood in the master bedroom, her dress pooling around her on the floor.
Andrew entered and locked the door behind him.
"Mrs. Briggs," he said, his voice a dark caress.
"Mr. Briggs."
He crossed to her, stopping inches away. His hands found her waist, sliding up to cup her face.
"Tonight is ours," he said. "No empire. No threats. Just us."
She nodded, her breath catching.
He kissed her, slow and deep, and she melted into him. His hands worked the zipper of her dress, and it fell away, leaving her in lace and heels.
"Beautiful," he breathed, stepping back to look at her. "Every time, you take my breath away."
She reached for his tie, loosening it with deliberate slowness. "Then let me return the favor."
She undressed him piece by piece, savoring each revelation. His chest, scarred and powerful. His arms, corded with muscle. His eyes, dark with want. The jacket came first, then the shirt, each button a small surrender. She pressed her lips to his collarbone, tasted the salt of his skin. His breath hitched when her fingers found his belt.
When they were both bare, he lifted her and carried her to the bed.
The first time was tender. He laid her down like she was made of glass, kissing every inch of her skin. Her neck, her collarbone, the swell of her breasts. He took his time, worshiping her with lips and tongue until she was trembling. His mouth traced the curve of her jaw, the hollow of her throat, the sensitive skin behind her ear. She arched into him, her fingers threading through his hair.
"You're so beautiful," he murmured, his breath hot against her nipple before he took it into his mouth. She gasped, her back bowing off the bed. He swirled his tongue, then tugged gently with his teeth, sending sparks of pleasure straight to her core.
He moved lower, pressing open-mouthed kisses down her ribs, across her stomach, dipping into her navel. She squirmed beneath him, aching for more.
"Andrew," she gasped, arching into him.
"Patience, my love," he murmured against her thigh. "I want to remember every sound you make."
He parted her legs and lowered his mouth to her core. She cried out, fingers tangling in his hair as he worked her with expert care. His tongue found her most sensitive spot, circling it with maddening precision before dipping lower to taste her fully. She was already slick, already trembling, and he hadn't even begun.
He brought her to the edge twice, backing off each time until she was begging. The first time, he slowed his rhythm just as the tension coiled tight, pressing soft kisses to her inner thighs while she whimpered. The second time, he sucked gently on her clit before pulling away entirely, leaving her empty and desperate.
"Please," she moaned. "Please, Andrew. I can't take it."
He rose over her, his body a shield of heat and muscle. "Look at me."
She did. His eyes were dark, fierce, full of love.
"You are my queen," he said, and pushed inside her.
She gasped at the fullness, the rightness of it. He was thick and hard, and her body stretched to accommodate him, the slight edge of pain melting into pure pleasure. He moved slow, deep, each thrust a declaration. She could feel every inch of him, the way he filled her completely, the way her walls clenched around him.
"God, you feel incredible," he groaned, his forehead pressed against hers. "So tight. So wet."
She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, and they moved together like tides. He gripped her hips, angling her so he could thrust deeper, hitting that spot inside her that made stars burst behind her eyes. She dug her nails into his shoulders, marking him the way he'd marked her soul.
"Harder," she breathed, and he obeyed, his pace increasing until the bed frame rattled against the wall. The wet sound of their bodies meeting was obscene, beautiful, a symphony of desire.
When she came, it was with his name on her lips and stars behind her eyes. Her whole body seized, clenching around him in waves as the orgasm crashed through her. He followed moments later, burying his face in her neck as he shuddered, his warmth flooding her in pulses.
They lay tangled, breathing hard. Rosa traced the scars on his chest. "I love every part of you," she said. "Even the broken pieces."
He kissed her forehead. "You healed them."
She smiled and pushed him onto his back. "My turn."
She straddled him, taking him inside her with a slow, deliberate slide. She watched his face as she sank down, the way his jaw clenched and his eyes darkened. His hands found her hips, guiding her as she rode him. This was different. She controlled the pace, the depth, the angle. She rolled her hips experimentally, finding the spot that made her breath catch, then set a rhythm that had him groaning beneath her.
"You like this," she said, watching his face contort with pleasure.
"Yes," he groaned. "God, yes."
She leaned forward, her breasts brushing his chest, her nipples dragging against his skin. "Tell me what you want."
"You. Always you. Whatever you give me."
She rode him harder, faster, watching him unravel beneath her. She braced her hands on his chest, changing the angle so her clit ground against him with each stroke. The friction was exquisite, building her toward another peak. She could feel him pulsing inside her, could see the strain in his face as he fought for control.
"Don't hold back," she commanded. "Let go for me."
His fingers dug into her hips, and he thrust up into her, meeting her movements with desperate urgency. When she came, she tightened around him, and he followed with a hoarse shout, his hands gripping her hips hard enough to bruise.
After, she lay beside him, her head on his chest. His hand stroked her hair.
"There's more," he said, his voice low. "If you want."
She lifted her head. "Show me."
He rolled her onto her stomach, positioning her on her knees. She felt vulnerable, exposed, but safe. His hands smoothed down her back, over the curve of her hips, squeezing her ass before positioning himself behind her.
"Trust me?"
"Always."
He entered her from behind, a different angle, deeper. She moaned into the pillows as he set a rhythm, his hands on her hips, guiding her. This was rougher, more primal, but still full of care. He reached around to stroke her clit as he thrust, and she keened at the dual sensation.
"You take me so well," he growled. "My perfect wife."
She pushed back against him, meeting his thrusts. The pleasure built, coiled tight, until she shattered with a cry. He followed, pulling her close as he spilled inside her.
They collapsed together, slick with sweat. Andrew pulled her against his chest, wrapping himself around her.
"I'm not done with you yet," he murmured against her hair.
She laughed, weak and happy. "Give me a minute."
He kissed her shoulder. "Take all the time you need. We have forever."
They drifted, tangled together. Rosa's mind wandered over the past months. The will reading. The first night in this villa. The council meeting, the attack, the battle at the shore.
She had been so afraid. Afraid of losing herself. Afraid of becoming her father's shadow. Afraid of being consumed by this world.
Instead, she had found herself. Found strength she didn't know she had. Found a partner who saw her as equal, as queen, as everything.
"What are you thinking?" Andrew asked.
"How far we've come," she said. "I was so scared that first night. I thought I'd be a puppet."
"You were never a puppet." He turned her to face him. "You were always the hand that held the strings. It just took you a while to realize it."
She kissed him, soft and sweet. "I love you, Andrew Briggs."
"And I love you, Rosalind Briggs. My queen."
She smiled against his lips. "Then show me again."
He did.
The third time was slow and deliberate, a celebration of their union. He worshipped every inch of her body, kissing and licking until she was a pool of sensation. She returned the favor, taking him in her mouth, learning the sounds he made when she found the right rhythm. She swirled her tongue around the head, tasting the salt of him, then took him deeper, relaxing her throat as she'd read about but never tried.
"Rosa," he gasped, his hands in her hair. "Stop, or I'll..."
She didn't stop. She took him deeper, and he came with a groan that shook his whole body. She swallowed, then licked him clean, looking up to find his eyes dark with wonder.
After, he pulled her up and kissed her, tasting himself on her lips.
"You're going to be the death of me," he said.
"What a way to go."
He laughed, a rare, beautiful sound. She basked in it.
Dawn crept through the curtains, painting the room in soft gold. Rosa lay awake, watching Andrew sleep. His face was relaxed, peaceful in a way she rarely saw.
She thought about the future. The empire they would build together. The children they might have. The threats they would face.
But for now, there was just this. This room. This man. This love.
He stirred, his eyes opening. "You're watching me."
"Always."
He pulled her close, his hand sliding down her back. "I could get used to this."
"You better. It's forever."
He kissed her, deep and slow. "Forever sounds perfect."
She stretched beneath him, feeling his body respond. "One more time?"
His grin was wicked. "I thought you'd never ask."
This time, she took control from the start. She straddled him, guiding him inside her, setting a pace that drove them both wild. She leaned forward, her hair falling around them like a curtain.
"I love you," she said, riding him with slow, deep strokes.
"I love you," he echoed, his hands on her hips.
They moved together, perfectly matched, perfectly in sync. When she came, it was with his name on her lips and the knowledge that she was exactly where she was meant to be.
He came moments later, pulling her down for a kiss.
They lay together as the sun rose, their bodies tangled, their hearts full.
Rosa traced patterns on his chest. "What happens now?"
"Now we rule," he said. "Together. As equals."
She smiled, feeling the truth of it settle in her bones. "Together."
He kissed her forehead. "Sleep, my queen. I'll be here when you wake."
She closed her eyes, safe in his arms. The queen of the Miami syndicate, finally at peace.
When she slept, she dreamed of power and passion and a love that would last forever.
And when she woke, he was there, just as he promised.
The New Order
Six months had reshaped the world.
The captains were gathered in the grand hall, the same room where Rosa had first presented herself as Andrew's wife. But the atmosphere was different now. The tension that had once crackled in the air was gone, replaced by a quiet respect that Rosa had earned through months of decisive action.
She stood at the head of the table, her hand resting on the polished wood. She wore a tailored black suit, her hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail. She looked every inch the queen she had become.
Andrew stood beside her, his presence a solid wall of support. He wore a dark gray suit, his expression calm and watchful. He had given her the space to lead, but she knew he was ready to step in if needed.
She didn't need him to.
"Gentlemen," she began, her voice steady. "I want to thank you for your continued loyalty. The past months have been challenging, but we've emerged stronger."
She paused, meeting the eyes of each captain. She saw Franco, who nodded in approval. She saw others who had once doubted her, now looking at her with respect.
"I know some of you questioned my place when I first arrived," she continued. "But I hope I've shown you that I'm not just a figurehead. I'm a partner in this family."
Andrew's hand found her lower back, a subtle gesture of support. "Rosa has proven herself time and again," he said, his voice low and firm. "She is my equal in every way. Anyone who disagrees can leave now."
No one moved. No one spoke.
Rosa felt a surge of pride. She had done this. She had earned their respect.
After the meeting, they retreated to their private quarters. The villa was quiet, the security tight. They were alone.
Rosa turned to Andrew, a smile playing on her lips. "That went well."
He pulled her into his arms, his lips brushing her forehead. "You were magnificent."
She melted into his embrace, feeling the familiar heat build. "I had a good teacher."
He chuckled, a low sound that vibrated through his chest. "I think you've surpassed me."
She looked up at him, her eyes sparkling. "Maybe. But I still have things to learn."
He raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Like what?"
She stepped back, taking his hand and leading him toward the bedroom. "Like how to make you surrender."
His eyes darkened with desire. "Is that a challenge?"
She smiled, a confident, knowing smile. "It's a promise."
The bedroom was dimly lit, the curtains drawn. The large bed dominated the room, a testament to their many nights of passion.
Rosa turned to face Andrew, her hands going to the buttons of his shirt. She undid them slowly, deliberately, savoring the feel of his hard chest beneath her fingers. He stood still, letting her take control.
She pushed the shirt off his shoulders, revealing the scars that mapped his body. She traced them with her fingertips, a gesture of reverence. He shivered under her touch.
"Tonight," she said, her voice low, "I want to be in charge."
He nodded, his breath catching. "As you wish, my queen."
She pushed him onto the bed, and he went willingly, his eyes never leaving hers. She climbed on top of him, straddling his hips. She could feel his arousal pressing against her, but she didn't rush.
She leaned down, kissing him slowly, deeply. Her tongue explored his mouth, tasting him. He groaned, his hands gripping her hips.
She broke the kiss, sitting up. She reached down and undid his pants, freeing him. She took him in her hand, stroking him slowly. He bucked into her touch, his eyes closed.
"Look at me," she commanded.
He opened his eyes, his gaze intense.
She positioned herself over him, then slowly, inch by inch, she lowered herself onto him. They both gasped at the sensation. She was in control, setting the pace.
She rode him slowly, deliberately, watching his face contort with pleasure. She felt powerful, in control. This was her domain now.
He let her take the lead, his hands resting on her hips, guiding but not directing. She moved faster, her breath coming in gasps. The tension built, coiling in her core.
"Rosa," he groaned, his voice strained.
She leaned forward, her lips brushing his ear. "Come for me, Andrew."
That was all it took. He climaxed with a shudder, and she followed moments later, crying out his name.
They lay tangled together, their bodies slick with sweat. She rested her head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat.
"I love you," she whispered.
He pressed a kiss to her hair. "I love you too. More than anything."
They lay in silence for a while, savoring the moment.
Finally, Andrew spoke. "What's next for us?"
Rosa smiled. "We build a future. Together."
He nodded. "Together."
One year later, the empire was stronger than ever. Rosa and Andrew had become legends in the underworld, a partnership that was feared and respected.
They sat on the balcony of their villa, watching the sunset over the Miami skyline. Rosa was pregnant, her belly round with their first child. Andrew's hand rested on her stomach, feeling the baby kick.
"She's going to be a fighter," he said.
Rosa laughed. "Or he."
"Either way," Andrew said, his voice soft, "they'll have the best of both of us."
Rosa leaned into him, feeling content. She had come so far from the quiet accountant she had once been. She had found her power, her love, her purpose.
And it was all because of him.
She looked up at him, her eyes shining. "Thank you for not giving up on me."
He kissed her forehead. "I never will."
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting the world in shades of gold and pink. They sat together, their future bright before them.
The new order was secure.
And their love would endure forever.
