Arrival and First Injection
Rebecca Kerr gripped the steering wheel tighter as the gravel road narrowed into a winding path flanked by tall pines. The GPS had long since lost signal, leaving her with nothing but the printed directions from the corporate incentive packet. She had won the trip through sheer performance, closing deals that others had called impossible, and she intended to use the time to review her latest projections. A wellness retreat sounded indulgent, but the isolation of the ranch felt excessive even for a prize.
The main house came into view at last, a sprawling two-story structure of weathered wood and stone that blended into the hills. A wide porch wrapped around the front, and a single vehicle sat parked near the entrance. Rebecca killed the engine, checked her reflection in the mirror, and smoothed her tailored blouse. She stepped out, heels crunching on gravel, and approached the door with her usual brisk stride.
A young woman in a simple uniform greeted her at the check-in desk inside the foyer. “Welcome to the Beeman Wellness Ranch, Ms. Kerr. We have your reservation. If you could just review and sign these forms, we can get you settled.”
Rebecca accepted the clipboard. The documents were thick, pages of dense legal language about liability, consent for treatments, and nondisclosure. She scanned them quickly, her accountant’s eye catching clauses about “proprietary hormonal protocols” and “temporary physical adjustments.” She signed with a firm stroke, her skepticism intact. “This seems thorough for a retreat,” she remarked.
“We take guest safety very seriously,” the attendant replied with a polite smile. “Your room is ready upstairs. Would you like a quick tour of the main house before your consultation?”
Rebecca nodded, following the woman through the spacious living areas. The interior was rustic yet comfortable, with heavy leather furniture, wide windows overlooking the pastures, and the faint scent of pine and clean linen. She noted the absence of other guests, which struck her as odd, but she attributed it to the exclusive nature of the prize. The tour ended in a bright office off the main hallway where a tall man waited behind a wooden desk.
Marv Beeman rose as she entered. He was exactly as the brochure had implied and more so: broad-shouldered, weathered features, dressed in a denim shirt rolled to the elbows and dark jeans. His presence filled the room without effort. “Ms. Kerr,” he said, voice low and steady with a drawl that rolled over the words. “I’m Marv Beeman, head handler here. Glad you made it in one piece.”
Rebecca extended her hand, meeting his firm grip. “Rebecca Kerr. Thank you for the arrangements. I’m looking forward to the program, though I do have some work to catch up on.”
Marv gestured to a chair. “We’ll keep things efficient. The first step is a simple serum to help with the rebalancing the retreat promises. It’s our proprietary blend. Most guests feel the benefits within hours.”
She sat, crossing her legs. “What exactly does it do?”
“Eases stress, improves sleep, supports natural hormonal balance,” he answered, already preparing a small vial and syringe on the desk. His movements were calm and practiced. “You’ll receive a series over your stay. This is the introductory dose.”
Rebecca watched him swab her upper arm. She had never been fond of needles, but she had signed the waivers. The sharp pinch came and went quickly. Marv pressed a cotton ball to the site and taped it down with efficient fingers. “There we go. Easy as that.”
A faint warmth spread from the injection site, but she dismissed it as the usual reaction to any shot. She stood, smoothing her skirt. “Thank you. I’d like to unpack and review my files before dinner.”
“Your room is the second on the left upstairs,” Marv said. “If you feel any unusual sensations, even minor ones, let any staff member know. We monitor closely.”
Rebecca offered a professional nod and turned to leave. As she climbed the stairs, a subtle tingling began beneath her blouse, centered on her breasts. It was light, almost like the brush of fabric against sensitive skin after a long day in the office. She paused on the landing, one hand resting lightly on the banister. Stress, she told herself. The drive had been long, the paperwork tedious. Nothing more.
She reached her room, a comfortable space with a large bed, writing desk, and view of the distant barns. Her suitcase waited on the luggage rack. Rebecca unpacked methodically, hanging her suits and setting her laptop on the desk. The tingling persisted, a low-level awareness that shifted when she moved. She unbuttoned the top of her blouse and glanced down. Her B-cup breasts looked unchanged, still contained neatly by her bra. She exhaled and buttoned up again.
Downstairs, the faint sound of voices drifted from the porch. Marv’s drawl carried through an open window, calm and instructive as he spoke with someone she couldn’t see. Rebecca closed the laptop lid for a moment and pressed her fingers to her temples. The day had been long. The tingling was nothing. She would rest, review her projections, and begin the retreat properly tomorrow. The serum was already doing its work, or so the paperwork claimed. She felt no different, aside from that persistent, ignorable warmth.
She sat at the desk and opened her files, determined to maintain her focus. The numbers on the screen blurred slightly at the edges before sharpening again. Rebecca blinked and kept typing. The ranch was quiet around her, the kind of quiet that invited surrender, but she had no intention of surrendering anything beyond the signed waivers. The tingling faded to a background hum. Stress, she repeated silently. Nothing more than stress from the journey.
