Arrival Under the Palms
Karen Wheeler stepped off the shuttle and felt the heat wrap around her like a second skin. The resort rose before them in white stone and dark wood, palm fronds swaying against a sky so blue it almost hurt to look at. She adjusted the strap of her canvas bag and glanced at Ilya beside her, already grinning as he pulled their suitcases from the back.
"This is exactly what we needed," he said, voice carrying that easy confidence she had always admired and sometimes envied. "No lesson plans. No early alarms. Just us and a whole lot of nothing to do."
Karen smiled, though it felt smaller than his. "You say that now. Give it two days and you'll be dragging me to every beach volleyball game they offer."
Ilya laughed, the sound warm and unselfconscious. He leaned in and kissed her temple, his hand resting at the small of her back. "Only if you promise to cheer me on in that little sundress you packed."
She felt the familiar flicker of warmth at his touch, but also the quiet reminder that their days rarely aligned like this anymore. Teaching kept her up late with papers; his training studio ran until the evening crowd thinned. Vacations like this one were supposed to fix the gap, yet she wondered if one week could really do it.
The check-in desk sat beneath an open-air pavilion strung with fairy lights. A woman in a crisp linen uniform handed them keys and a map of the grounds. "Your villa is number twelve, just past the main pool. Welcome to Solara Resort, Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler."
Ilya thanked her with that bright, effortless charm that made strangers lean closer. Karen stayed a step behind, fingers tightening on the strap of her bag as she took in the wide lobby and the guests already mingling with cocktails in hand.
The villa itself was private, tucked behind flowering hedges. Inside, the air smelled of citrus and clean linen. A king bed dominated the bedroom, white sheets turned down in invitation. The bathroom held a deep soaking tub and a shower big enough for two. Karen set her bag on the bench and watched Ilya test the mattress with a bounce.
"Not bad," he said. "Think we can break it in properly later?"
She felt heat rise in her cheeks. "Let's see how the first night goes first."
His eyes softened. He crossed the room and pulled her into a loose embrace. "Hey. We're here to relax, remember? No pressure."
She nodded against his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of his cologne mixed with travel sweat. For a moment the tension in her shoulders eased. Then he released her and began unpacking with the same brisk energy he brought to every workout.
By late afternoon the welcome reception was in full swing near the central pool. Long tables held trays of fruit, grilled skewers, and chilled wine. Karen stood at Ilya's side while he chatted with another couple about the best snorkeling spots. She sipped her drink slowly, content to listen until her gaze drifted across the crowd.
A woman stood near the bar, laughing at something the bartender had said. Sun-kissed skin, wavy auburn hair that caught the light, and a green bikini top that left little to the imagination. She moved with an unhurried grace that drew eyes without seeming to try. Karen watched her accept a glass of wine and turn, scanning the gathering with an easy smile.
"Karen, you okay?" Ilya asked, following her line of sight for a second before returning to the conversation.
"I'm fine," she said, voice soft. "Just people-watching."
The woman, Elena the name tag at the bar had read, glanced their way once. Their eyes met for the briefest moment. Karen looked down at her glass, pulse unexpectedly quick.
Dinner was served on a lantern-lit terrace overlooking the water. Ilya ordered the grilled fish and talked animatedly about the fitness classes the resort offered. Karen picked at her salad and listened, offering small comments when he paused.
"You should try the yoga on the beach tomorrow," he said. "Might be nice to stretch out after the flight."
"Maybe," she answered. "Or I could just sit with a book. The villa has that little balcony that looks perfect for it."
Ilya reached across the table and took her hand. "We can do both. I want you to enjoy this trip as much as I do."
She squeezed his fingers, grateful for the reassurance even as the old worry stirred. Their life back home moved at different speeds. She wondered if this week would close the distance or simply highlight it.
Across the terrace, Elena sat with a small group, her laughter carrying on the breeze. Karen's eyes found her again without meaning to. The woman looked relaxed, confident in a way Karen had never quite managed. Ilya followed her glance once more and raised an eyebrow.
"Someone interesting?" he asked lightly.
"Just noticing the crowd," Karen said, and turned her attention back to her plate. The fish was perfectly cooked, the wine crisp, yet the simple normalcy of the evening already felt fragile.
Later, as they walked the lantern-lit path back to their villa, Ilya slipped an arm around her waist. "Tomorrow we hit the beach early," he said. "You and me and a whole day with nothing scheduled."
Karen leaned into him, letting the warmth of his body steady her. The resort hummed with distant music and the soft rush of waves. Somewhere in the dark, Elena's voice rose again in laughter. Karen didn't look. She kept her eyes on the path ahead, already wondering what the next day would bring and whether she was ready to meet it.
